Levels, Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Organochlorine Pesticides in Agricultural Soils from the Pearl River Delta of China

Isomer, enantiomer and compound-specific stable isotope evidences for the transformation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) in soils from three typical paddy fields in China

Chlorinated pollutants may follow distinct degradation pathways in anaerobic environments compared to aerobic settings. However, the understanding of the behaviors and fate of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) under anaerobic conditions remains limited. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a study on flooded soil samples collected from three typical paddy fields in China using an integrated approach of enantiomer-specific analysis and compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis. It is unexpected that the dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane /dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene ratios (DDD/DDE=(o,p'-DDD+p,p'-DDD)/(o,p'-DDE+p,p'-DDE)) were below 1 in over 90 % of the samples. This might be attributed to the higher recalcitrance of p,p'-DDE, which concentrations were found to be 36 times higher than p,p'-DDD on average. There were 71.7 % of the samples showing enantiomeric fractions (EFs) of o,p'-DDT below 0.5, indicating a preferential accumulation of the (-)-enantiomer. The δ13C values of the anaerobic metabolite o,p'-DDD (-24.76 ± 1.35 ‰ to -34.39 ± 0.20 ‰) all deviated negatively from the initial product, while those of the aerobic metabolite o,p'-DDE (-23.61 ± 0.48 ‰ to -38.95 ± 0.81 ‰) displayed either negative or positive deviations. This demonstrates that o,p'-DDD is the primary metabolite of o,p'-DDT under anaerobic conditions. However, no clear correlations were observed between the δ13C and EF of o,p'-DDT. This study underscores the importance of such an integrated methodology in unraveling the fate and behaviors of DDTs in complex environmental systems.

Analysis of nationwide soil pesticide pollution: Insights from China

China is a typical agricultural country that heavily relies on pesticides. Some pesticides can remain in the soil after application and thus pose a significant threat to human health. In order to characterize the status and hazards of nationwide soil contamination, this study extracted concentration data from published literature and analyzed them by a scoring approach, standard comparison and health risk assessment. For the soil pollution score, northern regions got the highest values, such as Henan (0.63), Liaoning (0.55), Heilongjiang (0.54) and Jilin (0.53), which implies high soil pesticide residues in these provinces. In contrast, Qinghai (-0.77), Guizhou (-0.64) and Tibet (-0.63) had lower scores. China's soil pesticide standards cover only 16 pesticides, and these pesticide concentrations were all below the corresponding standards. Direct exposure to soil pesticides in this study generally posed a negligible risk to children. Furthermore, pesticide dissipation and usage intensity in each province were analyzed as they were possible influences on pollution. The result showed that soil in the northern regions could accumulate more pesticides than those in the southern regions, and this geographic pattern was basically consistent with the distribution of soil pollution. However, the relationship between agricultural activities and soil pollution was less well characterized. It is recommended to establish a long-term monitoring database for pesticides and include more pesticides in regulatory frameworks. Additionally, efforts to accelerate pesticide degradation and shift the planting structure to reduce pesticide usage can help alleviate the pressure on soil from pesticides. This study can serve as a critical reference for policymakers and stakeholders in the field of agriculture.

Concentration and non-dietary human health risk assessment of pesticide residues in soil of farms in Golestan province, Iran

Detection of pesticide residues in soil samples was conducted using UHPLC-MS/MS. Non-dietary health risk assessment was conducted using calculate chronic daily intake (CDI) from ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact pathways and following non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in the adults and adolescent. The rank order of pesticide in soil based on their concentration was malathion (0.082 mg kg-1)> cyproconazole (0.019 mg kg-1)> propargite (0.018 mg kg-1)> butachlor (0.016 mg kg-1) > chlorpyrifos (0.0067 mg kg-1)> diazinon (0.0014 mg kg-1)> imidacloprid (0.0007 mg kg-1). Hazard index (HI) values obtained of exposure to pesticides in soil in adults and adolescent were 0.0012 and 0.0035, respectively. Hence, exposed population are at the acceptable range of non-carcinogenic risk (HI < 1). Cancer risk (CR) values due to propargite in soil via ingestion pathway in adults and adolescent were 2.03E-09 and 2.08E-09, respectively; therefore, carcinogenic risk due to the exposure to pesticide contaminated soil was safe range (CR < 1E-06).

2,4,6-TCP migrates and transforms in different cultivated soil in China: Kinetic analysis and mechanistic modeling

Organochlorine pesticides are widely used in agriculture, wood preservation, pulp bleaching and other fields, which increased the pollution risk of cultivated land. In this study, a typical organochlorine pesticides-2,4,6-TCP was conducted as the target pollutants to investigated the migration and transformation characteristics in different cultivated soils in China. The results indicated that the adsorption of 2,4,6-TCP in soil samples was in order: black soil＞laterite＞fluvo-aquic soil, and the maximum adsorption was 71.0870, 27.0575 and 6.1292 mg/kg, respectively. The dispersion coefficient of black soil, laterite and fluvo-aquic soil was 0.0329, 0.0501 and 0.0149, and the hysteretic factor R was 5.381, 1.455 and 2.238, respectively, indicating that the migration ability of 2,4,6-TCP in different cultivated soils samples was in order: black soil＞laterite＞fluvo-aquic soil. The fitting results of one-dimensional migration model indicated that the model well reflected the migration and transformation of 2,4,6-TCP in different cultivated soil samples. Meanwhile, the Two-dimensional migration model fitting results indicated that the maximum concentration of 2,4,6-TCP of different cultivated soil samples were found along the longitudinal flow direction, reaching 40% of the initial pollution concentration at 15 m, corresponding to the center of the pollutant plume.

Review of scientific literature on available methods of assessing organochlorine pesticides in the environment

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) widely used in agriculture and industry, causing serious health and ecological consequences upon exposure. This review offers a thorough overview of OCPs analysis emphasizing the necessity of ongoing work to enhance the identification and monitoring of these POPs in environmental and human samples. The benefits and drawbacks of the various OCPs analysis techniques including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are discussed. Challenges associated with validation and optimization criteria, including accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), must be met for a method to be regarded as accurate and reliable. Suitable quality control measures, such as method blanks and procedural blanks, are emphasized. The LOD and LOQ are critical quality control measure for efficient quantification of these compounds, and researchers have explored various techniques for their calculation. Matrix interference, solubility, volatility, and partition coefficient influence OCPs occurrences and are discussed in this review. Validation experiments, as stated by European Commission in document SANTE/11813/2017, showed that the acceptance criteria for method validation of OCP analytes include ≤20 % for high precision, and 70-120 % for recovery. This may ultimately be vital for determining the human health risk effects of exposure to OCP and for formulating sensible environmental and public health regulations.

Multiomics analyses reveal dose-dependent effects of dicofol exposure on host metabolic homeostasis and the gut microbiota in mice

BACKGROUND

Environmental exposure to dicofol (DCF), one of common organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) widely used for controlling agricultural pests, elicits a potential risk for human health due to its toxicity. However, potential physiological hazards of oral DCF exposure remain largely unknown.

METHODS

Mice were exposed to relatively chronic and subacute DCF at different doses (5, 20 and 100 mg/kg) by gavage for 2 weeks. 1H NMR-based metabolomics was used to explore alterations of metabolic profiling induced by DCF exposure. Targeted metabolomics was subsequently employed to investigate the dose-dependent effects of oral DCF exposure on lipid metabolism and the gut microbiota-derived metabolites of mice. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was further employed to evaluate the changes of gut community of mice exposed to DCF.

RESULTS

Oral exposure to DCF dose-dependently induced liver injury, manifested by hepatic lipogenesis, inflammation and liver dysfunction of mice. Typically, DCF exposure disrupted host fatty acids metabolism that were confirmed by marked alteration in the levels of related genes. DCF exposure also dose-dependently caused dysbiosis of the gut bacteria and its metabolites including altered microbial composition accompanied by inhibition of bacterial fermentation.

CONCLUSION

These results provide metabolic evidence that DCF exposure dose-dependently induces liver lipidosis and disruption of the gut microbiota in mice, which enrich our views of molecular mechanism of DCF hepatoxicity.

Combination of slurry-bioreactors and actinobacteria consortia as strategy to bioremediate chlordane-contaminated soils

Soil contamination caused by pesticides poses a significant environmental challenge, and addressing it requires effective solutions. Bioremediation, combining the utilization of slurry-bioreactors and microbial consortia, emerges as an appropiated strategy to tackle this issue. Therefore, this research evaluated the chlordane (CLD) removal efficiency by a Streptomyces consortium through bioaugmentation of polluted soils, and slurry-bioreactors. For that, a Streptomyces defined consortium with CLD removal abilities was inoculated in soil microcosms and soil-slurry bioreactors (SB), with (SB-TSB) and without stimulation (SB-water). In soil, CLD presence has no negative effect on consortium growth. This was supported by comparing its duplication time (7.48 ± 0.14 h) with the obtained in the biotic control (7.45 ± 0.04 h). Furthermore, 17% of pesticide removal by microbial action was detected in the treated microcosms. In SB, the microbial development was not affected by the pesticide presence. In SB-TSB, the microbial growth was higher than in SB-water. This was supported by its lesser duplication time (7.27 ± 0.17 h) with respect to the non-stimulated systems (10.88 ± 0.29 h). However, SB-water showed the highest CLD removal ability (34.8%), with a concomitant increase in the chloride ion release. In the phytotoxicity test, the vigor index showed that the bioremediation in SB-water did not exert adverse effects greater than those generated by the CLD. Indeed, the root length increased after the treatment. These findings demonstrate the versatility of the Streptomyces consortium to remediate solid and semi-solid matrices impacted with pesticides, and the advantage of using bioaugmented SB to enhance the pollutants removal and accelerating the clean-up time required.

Screening of pesticides in serum, urine and cerebrospinal fluid collected from an urban population in China

Human exposure to pesticides is a topic of public health concern for decades. Pesticide exposures have been assessed through the analysis of urine or blood matrices, but little is known on the accumulation of these chemicals in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF plays an important role in maintaining physical and chemical balance of the brain and central nervous system and any perturbation can have adverse effects on health. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of 222 pesticides in CSF from 91 individuals using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Measured pesticide concentrations in CSF were compared with those in 100 serum and urine specimens from individuals living in the same urban location. Twenty pesticides were found in CSF, serum and urine, at levels above the limit of detection. Three most frequently detected pesticides in CSF were biphenyl (100%), diphenylamine (75%), and hexachlorobenzene (63%). Median concentrations of biphenyl in CSF, serum and urine were 1.11, 10.6, and 1.10 ng/mL, respectively. Six triazole fungicides were found only in CSF, but not in other matrices. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report pesticide concentrations in CSF in a general urban population.

Quantification of insecticides in commercial seafood sold in East Asian markets: risk assessment for consumers

The extraction of 21 insecticides and 5 metabolites was performed using an optimized and validated QuEChERS protocol that was further used for the quantification (GC-MS/MS) in several seafood matrices (crustaceans, bivalves, and fish-mudskippers). Seven species, acquired from Hong Kong and Macao wet markets (a region so far poorly monitored), were selected based on their commercial importance in the Indo-Pacific region, market abundance, and affordable price. Among them, mussels from Hong Kong, together with mudskippers from Macao, presented the highest insecticide concentrations (median values of 30.33 and 23.90 ng/g WW, respectively). Residual levels of fenobucarb, DDTs, HCHs, and heptachlors were above the established threshold (10 ng/g WW) for human consumption according to the European and Chinese legislations: for example, in fish-mudskippers, DDTs, fenobucarb, and heptachlors (5-, 20- and tenfold, respectively), and in bivalves, HCHs (fourfold) had higher levels than the threshold. Risk assessment revealed potential human health effects (e.g., neurotoxicity), especially through fish and bivalve consumption (non-carcinogenic risk; ΣHQ_LT > 1), and a potential concern of lifetime cancer risk development through the consumption of fish, bivalves, and crustaceans collected from these markets (carcinogenic risk; ΣTCR > 10^-4). Since these results indicate polluted regions, where the seafood is collected/produced, a strict monitoring framework should be implemented in those areas to improve food quality and safety of seafood products.

Analysis of the Degradation of OCPs Contaminated Soil by the BC/nZVI Combined with Indigenous Microorganisms

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were typical persistent organic pollutants that posed great hazards and high risks in soil. In this study, a peanut shell biochar-loaded nano zero-valent iron (BC/nZVI) material was prepared in combination with soil indigenous microorganisms to enhance the degradation of α-hexachlorocyclohexane(α-HCH) and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane(γ-HCH) in water and soil. The effects of BC/nZVI on indigenous microorganisms in soil were investigated based on the changes in redox potential and dehydrogenase activity in the soil. The results showed as follows: (1) The specific surface area of peanut shell biochar loaded with nano-zero-valent iron was large, and the nano-zero-valent iron particles were evenly distributed on the peanut shell biochar; (2) peanut shell BC/nZVI had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in water, with degradation rates of 64.18% for α-HCH and 91.87% for γ-HCH in 24 h; (3) peanut shell BC/nZVI also had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in soil, and the degradation rates of α-HCH and γ-HCH in the 1% BC/nZVI reached 55.2% and 85.4%, second only to 1% zero-valent iron. The degradation rate was the fastest from 0 to 7 days, while the soil oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased sharply. (4) The addition of BC/nZVI to the soil resulted in a significant increase in dehydrogenase activity, which further promoted the degradation of HCHs; the amount of HCHs degradation was significantly negatively correlated with dehydrogenase activity. This study provides a remediation strategy for HCH-contaminated sites, reducing the human health risk of HCHs in the soil while helping to improve the soil and increase the activity of soil microorganisms.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Pollution Characteristics in Agricultural Soils of the Pearl River Delta Region, China

In order to investigate the pollution status of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the agricultural soil, 240 agricultural soil topsoil samples were collected from nine Pearl River Delta cities from June to September 2019. In addition, 72 samples were collected for vertical soil profiles, which soil profiles were excavated to a depth of 80 cm. After sample preparation, GC-MS was used for the separation of compounds on a HP-5MS quartz capillary column. ArcGIS software was used to map the spatial distribution. Health risk assessment was conducted using USEPA standard. The results showed that the total concentration of 16 PAHs ranged from 43.4 to 5630 ng/g, with an average of 219 ng/g. The spatial distribution showed that most of the seriously polluted areas were in the coastal area, near the port, and there was point source pollution in the Gaoming of Foshan. Vertically distributed display Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Shenzhen and Dongguan increased and then decreased from bottom to bottom, showing a low-high-low pattern, the concentration of PAHs in Zhongshan and Foshan decreased with the soil depth, while the concentration of PAHs in Guangzhou and Huizhou was enriched with human activities. The PAHs components in soil samples were mainly medium and high rings (4−6 rings). The analysis of the origin of PAH in soil samples showed that the mixture of incomplete combustion sources of fossil fuels such as coal and biomass and traffic emission sources were the main sources of soil PAHs. A small amount can be attributed to oil sources such as oil spills. The human health risk assessment showed no cancer risk for children, while for adults, may cause a potential risk of cancer, which needs to be noticed. Spearman correlation analysis showed that PAH content was significantly correlated with SOC (p < 0.01) and pH (p < 0.05). Port transport, road emissions and industrial production make the area a pollution hot topic, and supervision should be strengthened to protect the environment and food safety.
