Factors Associated with Insomnia and Aggression among Healthcare Workers during COVID-19 Pandemic

Psychopathology symptoms of frontline nurses under sudden public health crisis: A network analysis

Public health crises can significantly impact the emotional well-being of healthcare workers. Network analysis is a novel approach to exploring interactions between mental disorders at the symptom level. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and insomnia symptoms network among frontline nurses under sudden public health crisis. A cross-sectional survey was conducted online among 556 frontline nurses through convenience sampling in Hubei Province, China, from 21 February 2020, to 10 March 2020. Symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and insomnia were assessed by the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5), Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Insomnia Severity Index, respectively. Central symptoms (the most important symptoms, activation has the strongest influence the other nodes) and bridge symptoms (nodes where deactivation can prevent activation from spreading from one disorder to another) were identified via centrality and bridge centrality indices, respectively. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure. We found that the correlation between PHQ-9 item 9 'suicidal thoughts' and PCL-5 item 16 'reckless or self-destructive behaviour' was the strongest. Moreover, 'reckless or self-destructive behaviour' was the strongest central symptom, and PHQ-9 item 3 'sleep problems' was the most important bridge symptom. Other major symptoms included GAD-7 item 6 'uncontrollable anxiety' and PHQ-9 item 2 'depressed or sad mood'. Timely, systemic targeting interventions on central symptoms and bridge symptoms may effectively alleviate co-occurring experiences of psychopathological symptoms among frontline nurses.

Lessons learned from behaviors of the employees in Iranian banks during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis: A phenomenological study

The aim of this research is to analyze the experiences of employees during the Covid-19 pandemic cri-sis and conceptualize the lessons learned to deal with similar crises in the future. To achieve this, a qualitative approach with a phenomenological strategy was conducted through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 16 front-line employees of Bank Melli, the largest state bank in Iran. The study found that employee behavior plays a critical role in crisis management, with functional behaviors such as preventive measures, stress management, and sharing valid information being essential. Dysfunctional behaviors such as resistance to change and inconsistent behaviors were also identified. The prevention of infection and stress management were identified as key behaviors to cope with the crisis, while media literacy and acceptance of change were crucial for correct information analysis and crisis management. Overall, the study highlights the challenges faced by employees during the Covid-19 crisis and provides valuable lessons from a behavioral perspective for managers in the banking industry to manage disruptions caused by current and future pandemics. The study emphasizes the importance of learning from the lessons of the Covid-19 crisis to reduce negative effects on physical and mental health.

Anger and Aggression in Relation to Psychological Resilience and Alcohol Abuse among Health Professionals during the First Pandemic Wave

Mental health problems, behavior changes, and addictive issues have been consistently documented among healthcare workers during the pandemic. The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of anger and aggression in relation to psychological resilience and alcohol abuse among healthcare workers during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 120 physicians and 123 nurses completed an online survey of the Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5 (DAR-5), the Brief Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and the Alcohol Screening questionnaire CAGE which is an acronym for the focus of the questions (Cutting down, Annoyance by criticism, Guilty feeling, and Eye-openers). Demographic and professional data were also recorded. A total of 53 men and 190 women participated in the study. Almost one-third of the participants had a positive score on the DAR-5 scale and one out of ten respondents presented with current problematic alcohol use. Male participants demonstrated lower scores on the DAR-5 scale compared to females. Individuals with current problematic alcohol use displayed higher scores on the BAQ compared to those without alcohol use disorders. Regression analysis revealed that 16.4% of the variance in the BAQ scores can be attributed to scores on the DAR-5, 5.9% to the BRS scores, 2.1% to the CAGE scores, 1.7% to gender, and 1.2% to years of work experience. Mediation analysis highlighted the role of psychological resilience as a negative mediator in the DAR-5 and BAQ relationship. Professional experience and alcohol abuse emerged as positive and negative risk factors contributing to aggression and psychological resilience. The findings hold practical implications for implementing interventions to strengthen resilience in order to compensate for aggressive tendencies and discourage addictive issues.

Sleep Quality Aspects in Post-COVID-19 Patients

In this observational cohort study, sleep quality in post-COVID-19 patients was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. This study aimed to examine aspects of sleep quality in patients who have undergone SARS-CoV-2 infection and if there is a pattern of progression or regression over time (6 months). We also observed and analyzed the results in order to identify any possible links between the severity of COVID-19 and sleep quality as measured by the PSQI questionnaire. The study group consisted of 65 adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who were referred to a pulmonologist for evaluation. Sleep quality was impacted at a high rate in post-COVID-19 patients, quantified by a PSQI score ≥5. Out of 65 patients, 51% of them had scores greater than or equal to 5. Sleep was subjectively reported as unsatisfactory predominantly in mild and moderate COVID-19 patients. According to the PSQI score and a 6-month follow-up, many patients presented persistency in poor sleep quality. Investigation and individualized treatment of sleep disorders in post-COVID-19 patients should be part of the routine pneumological control, as improvement in sleep quality has an impact not only on the health but also on the psychological state of patients. Educating patients about the importance of sleep and sleep quality impairment should be a primary concern.
