Abstract
BACKGROUND As the derivatives of cyclodextrin (CD), cyclodextrin polymers (CDPs) effectively increase the concentration of CD units and construct supramolecular structures with unique stereoselectivity by the structure design. CDPs have shown significant potential in chiral separation, however, the process of stereoselective interactions on chiral stationary phases (CSPs) and the specific contribution of intermolecular forces are still a challenge issue. A comprehensive understanding of the chiral recognition mechanism of CDPs will help to optimize chiral separation conditions and design new CSPs. RESULTS The star CDP with a supermolecular structure was synthesized by grafting β-CD onto the external 6-position hydroxyl groups using β-CD as the parent nucleus. The enhanced host-guest recognition ability of CD supramolecular polymer structure provided better inclusion interaction and increased chiral recognition of the isomers. The Star-CD CSP with star CDP as a chiral ligand performed satisfactory stereoisomer separation ability with the separation factor (α) up to 2.0 for various quinoline alkaloid isomers and 1.89 for catechins. To elucidate its chiral separation mechanism, molecular docking was used to construct the three-dimensional visual models of the binding sites and the contribution of non-covalent interactions between Star-CD CSP and quinoline alkaloid isomers. In addition, the formation sites of non-covalent interactions on the CD monomers of the polymer side chains were confirmed from the actual geometric structure by analyzing the NMR chemical shift changes before and after the formation of complexes between Star-CD polymers and isomers. Combined with the mutual evidence of molecular simulation and chiral NMR, the specific recognition mechanism of selector-selectand complexes was comprehensively expounded. SIGNIFICANCE The multi-mode CSP based on cyclodextrin supramolecular structure provides new ideas for the stereoisomeric separation of complex chiral components with multiple chiral centers in natural products. Not limited to the macroscopic performance of the chromatographic separation, molecular docking explored the theoretical model of chiral recognition from the molecular level. The chiral NMR analysis confirmed the credibility of the model from the geometry structure, and then the recognition mechanism of multi-mode CSP was fully elaborated combining the above three aspects.

Abstract
Enantioseparation of three β-blockers, i.e., atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol, was studied on amylose tris(3-chloro-5-methylphenylcarbamate) immobilized chiral stationary phase using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The effect of organic modifiers (methanol, isopropanol and their mixture), column temperature and back pressure on chiral separation of β-blockers was evaluated. Optimum chromatographic separation with respect to resolution, retention, and analysis time was achieved using a mixture of CO2 and 0.1% isopropyl amine in isopropanol: methanol (50:50, V/V), in 75:25 (V/V) ratio. Under the optimized conditions, the resolution factors (Rs) and separation factors (α) were greater than 3.0 and 1.5, respectively. Further, with increase in temperature (25–45 °C) and pressure (100–150 bars) there was corresponding decrease in retention factors (k), α and Rs. However, a reverse trend (α and Rs) was observed for atenolol with increase in temperature. The thermodynamic data from van't Hoff plots revealed that the enantioseparation was enthalpy driven for metoprolol and propranolol while entropy driven for atenolol. To understand the mechanism of chiral recognition and the elution behavior of the enantiomers, molecular docking studies were performed. The binding energies obtained from simulation studies were in good agreement with the elution order found experimentally and also with the free energy values. The method was validated in the concentration range of 0.5–10 μg/mL for all the enantiomers. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation ranged from 0.126 to 0.137 μg/mL and 0.376–0.414 μg/mL, respectively. The method was used successfully to analyze these drugs in pharmaceutical preparations. Simultaneous enantioseparation of three β-blockers in a single analysis using chiral SFC Separation efficiency was mainly dependent on the nature and composition of mobile phase van't Hoff plots revealed enthalpy driven process for metoprolol and propranolol and entropy driven for atenolol Binding energies from molecular docking study were in good agreement with the elution order The results suggested hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, as the dominant interaction modes.

Abstract
A novel β-cyclodextrin derivative chemically bonded chiral stationary phase (EDACD) was synthesized by the reaction of mono-6-ethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin with the active alkyl isocyanate, anchoring to silica gel. After the successful analysis and characterization using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques, the enantioselective performance of the as-prepared EDACD column was evaluated by non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs and flavonoids under the reversed-phase HPLC condition. The factors that affected enantioseparation including mobile phase compositions and buffers were investigated in more detail. As a result, EDACD showed a satisfactory enantioselectivity for the tested drugs. With the mobile phase of acetonitrile and 20-mM ammonium formate adjusted to pH 4.0 using formic acid (85:15, v/v) at the flow rate of 0.6 mL min-1, the enantiomers of ibuprofen, carprofen, naproxen, indoprofen, ketoprofen, eriocitrin, naringin, and narirutin were separated with the best resolutions of 1.53, 1.64, 3.72, 2.40, 0.50, 0.61, 0.58, and 0.52. To adjust the proportion of acetonitrile to 80% (by volume), the enantiomers of pranoprofen and flurbiprofen were completely resolved with the best resolutions of 1.60 and 1.59. Additionally, by the study of the molecular docking, hydrogen bonding and inclusion complexation were believed to play an important role in chiral recognition. As a new material, EDACD will have a wider application in the analysis of chiral compounds.

Abstract
Nowadays, ionic liquids (ILs) functionalized cyclodextrins (CDs) have drawn increasing attention in chiral separation. Herein, a novel β-CD derivative functionalized by L-histidinium IL, mono-6-deoxy-6-L-histidinium-β-cyclodextrin chloride (L-HMCDCl), was synthesized for the first time and utilized for enantioseparation of nefopam and chlorphenamine in capillary electrophoresis. The L-HMCDCl exhibited superior enantioselectivity compared with native β-CD. The effect of some key parameters such as chiral selector concentration, buffer pH and applied voltage on the enantioseparation was investigated in detail. In the interest of the chiral discrimination mechanism and the enhanced enantioselectivity of L-HMCDCl, molecular modeling with AutoDock was employed to study the interaction, which was in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfate A was covalently immobilized onto a monolithic silica epoxy column involving a Schiff base formation in the presence of ethylenediamine as a spacer and evaluated in terms of its selectivity in enantioseparation. The obtained column was utilized as a chiral stationary phase in enantioseparation of amlodipine and verapamil using a mobile phase consisting of 50 mM phosphate buffer pH 3.5 and UV detection. Sample dilution by organic solvents (preferably 25% v/v acetonitrile-aqueous solution) was applied to achieve baseline enantioresolution (Rs > 3.0) of the individual drug models within 7 min, an excellent linearity (R2 = 0.999) and an interday repeatability of 1.1% to 1.8% RSD. The performance of the immobilized column for quantification of racemate in commercial tablets showed a recovery of 86–98% from tablet matrices. Computational modeling by molecular docking was employed to investigate the feasible complexes between enantiomers and the chiral selector.

Abstract
Enantiomeric separation of six β-adrenergic blockers was systematically studied for the first time on a polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phase, i.e. Chiralpak IB, under the normal-phase mode. The effect of alcohol modifiers, alcohol content and basic additive on enantiomeric separation was evaluated and optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the enantiomers of atenolol, bevantolol, cartelol, esmolol, metoprolol and propranolol were all baseline resolved with resolutions of 1.50, 8.56, 2.05, 2.11, 3.56 and 4.02, respectively. Additionally, molecular docking was tested to explain chiral recognition mechanisms of this set of the drug enantiomers on Chiralpak IB. The details of the various interactions affecting enantiomeric separation were confirmed from the molecular level and the modeling data were in agreement with the chromatographic results concerning the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
In order to have deep insights into the mechanisms of enantiomer affinity pattern in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems, an approach combining capillary electrophoresis and molecular modeling was undertaken. A chiral β-blocker; acebutolol, was enantioseparated in aqueous capillary electrophoresis and non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis using two anionic β-cyclodextrin derivatives. The enantiomer affinity pattern of acebutolol was found to be opposite when an aqueous background electrolyte was replaced with non-aqueous background electrolyte in the presence of heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin but remained the same in the presence of heptakis(2,3-di-O-methyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin. Molecular docking of acebutolol into two β-cyclodextrin derivatives indicated two distinct binding modes called 'up' and 'down' conformations. After structure optimization by molecular dynamics and energy minimization, both enantiomers of acebutolol were preferred to the 'up' conformation with heptakis(2,3-di-O-methyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin while 'down' conformation with heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin. The further calculation of the complex energy with solvent effect indicated that heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin had higher affinity to S-acebutolol than R-acebutolol in non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis while it showed better binding to R-acebutolol in aqueous capillary electrophoresis. However, the heptakis(2,3-di-O-methyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin bound better to R-acebutolol in both aqueous and non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis, implying that the binding mode played more important role in chiral separation of heptakis(2,3-di-O-methyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin while the solvent effect had prevailing impact on heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin.

Abstract
Several chiral reagents including cyclodextrins (CDs) and derivatives, crown ethers, proteins, chiral surfactants, and polymers have been involved in dual-selector systems for enantioseparation of a series of compounds by capillary electrophoresis (CE). In this paper, chondroitin sulfate D-based dual-selector system (CSD/CM-β-CD) was firstly established and investigated for the enantioseparation of six basic racemic drugs in capillary electrophoresis. Compared to the single-selector systems, synergistic effect and significantly improved separations for all tested analytes were observed in CSD/CM-β-CD system. The effect of several parameters, such as buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and applied voltage, was systematically optimized. Meanwhile, to investigate the possible chiral recognition mechanisms in CSD/CM-β-CD synergistic system, we tried to apply the molecular docking method to simulate the host-guest binding procedures of the polysaccharide-based dual system for the first time. The difference in binding free energy was found to correspond to the chiral selectivity factor. The existence of CSD-CM-β-CD complex may give rise to a higher discriminatory ability against the enantiomers, indicating the synergistic effect in CSD/CM-β-CD system. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Abstract
Discovering more superior performance of ionic liquids for the separation science has triggered increasing interest. In this work, two new Hydroxy acid-based chiral ionic liquids (CILs) (tertramethylammonium-d-pantothenate (TMA-d-PAN), tertramethylammonium-d-quinate (TMA-d-QUI)) were designed and first used as additives to establish the maltodextrin-based synergistic systems for enantioseparation in capillary electrophoresis (CE). Compared to traditional single maltodextrin chiral separation system, significantly improved separations of all tested drugs in the CIL/Maltodextrin synergistic systems were obtained. Some parameters (CIL concentration, maltodextrin concentration, buffer pH, and applied voltage) in the TMA-d-PAN/Maltodextrin synergistic system have been examined and optimized for analytes. The molecular docking software AutoDock was applied to simulate the recognition process and surmise feasible resolution mechanism in the Maltodextrin/CILs synergistic systems, which has certain guiding value.

Abstract
Aim: β-blockers are compounds that bind with adrenoreceptors hindering their interaction with adrenalin and noradrenalin. They are clinically relevant and they are also used in some sport as doping agents. Results: A new method based on the combination of dispersive micro-solid phase extraction and LC–MS/MS has been developed to determine propranolol and carvedilol in urine samples. For this purpose a magnetic-polyamide composite is synthesized and used as sorbent. Working under the optimum conditions, the method provides limits of detection and quantification in the range of 0.1–0.15 μg/l and 0.3–0.5 μg/l, for carvedilol and propranolol, respectively. The precision, expressed as RSD, was better than 9.6% and the relative recoveries varied between 73.7 and 81.3%. Conclusion: The methodology is appropriate for the determination of β-blockers in urine samples at the low microgram per liter range for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
This review deals with the applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to understand the mechanisms of chiral separation in capillary electrophoresis (CE). It is accepted that changes observed in the separation process, including the reversal of enantiomer migration order (EMO), can be caused by subtle modifications in the molecular recognition mechanisms between enantiomer and chiral selector. These modifications may imply minor structural differences in those selector-selectand complexes that arise from the above mentioned interactions. Therefore, it is mandatory to understand the fine intermolecular interactions between analytes and chiral selectors. In other words, it is necessary to know in detail the structures of the complexes formed by the enantiomer (selectand) and the selector. Any differences in the structures of these complexes arising from either enantiomer should be detected, so that enantiomeric bias in the separation process could be explained. As to the nature of these interactions, those have been extensively reviewed, and it is not intended to be discussed here. These interactions contemplate ionic, ion-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, steric and hydrophobic interactions. The main subject of this review is to describe how NMR spectroscopy helps to gain insight into the non-covalent intermolecular interactions between selector and selectand that lead to enantiomer separation by CE. Examples in which diastereomeric species are created by covalent (irreversible) derivatization will not be considered here. This review is structured upon the different structural classes of chiral selectors employed in CE, in which NMR spectroscopy has made substantial contributions to rationalize the observed enantioseparations. Cases in which other techniques complement NMR spectroscopic data are also mentioned.

Abstract
Stereospecific recognition of chiral molecules is an important issue in various aspects of life sciences and chemistry including analytical separation sciences. The basis of analytical enantioseparations is the formation of transient diastereomeric complexes driven by hydrogen bonds or ionic, ion-dipole, dipole-dipole, van der Waals as well as π-π interactions. Recently, halogen bonding was also described to contribute to selector-selectand complexation. Besides structure-separation relationships, spectroscopic techniques, especially NMR spectroscopy, as well as X-ray crystallography have contributed to the understanding of the structure of the diastereomeric complexes. Molecular modeling has provided the tool for the visualization of the structures. The present review highlights recent contributions to the understanding of the binding mechanism between chiral selectors and selectands in analytical enantioseparations dating between 2012 and early 2016 including polysaccharide derivatives, cyclodextrins, cyclofructans, macrocyclic glycopeptides, proteins, brush-type selectors, ion-exchangers, polymers, crown ethers, ligand-exchangers, molecular micelles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks and nucleotide-derived selectors. A systematic compilation of all published literature on the various chiral selectors has not been attempted.

Abstract
Worldwide, contamination of aquatic systems with micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, is one of the challenges for sustainable management of water resources. Although micropollutants are present at low concentrations, many of them raise considerable toxicological concerns, particularly when present as components of complex mixtures. Recent research has shown that this problem cannot be sustainably solved with advanced effluent treatment. Therefore, an alternative that might overcome these environmental problems is the design of new pharmaceutical molecules or the redesign of existing pharmaceutical molecules that present the functionality needed for their application and have improved environmental biodegradability. Such redesigning can be performed by small molecular changes in the drug molecule with intact drug moiety which could incorporate the additional attribute such as biodegradability while retaining its pharmacological potency. This proof of concept study provides an approach for the rational redesign of a given pharmaceutical (Propranolol as an example). New derivatives with small molecular changes as compared to propranolol molecule were generated by a nontargeted photolysis process. Generated derivatives with intact drug moieties (an aromatic ring and a β-ethanolamine moiety) were further screened for aerobic biodegradability and pharmacological potency. The feasibility of the approach of redesigning an existing pharmaceutical through nontargeted generation of new derivatives with intact drug moiety and through subsequent screening was demonstrated in this study. Application of such approaches in turn might contribute to the protection of water resources in a truly sustainable manner.

Abstract
The presences of micro-pollutants (active pharmaceutical ingredients, APIs) are increasingly seen as a challenge of the sustainable management of water resources worldwide due to ineffective effluent treatment and other measures for their input prevention. Therefore, novel approaches are needed like designing greener pharmaceuticals, i.e. better biodegradability in the environment. This study addresses a tiered approach of implementing green and sustainable chemistry principles for theoretically designing better biodegradable and pharmacologically improved pharmaceuticals. Photodegradation process coupled with LC-MS(n) analysis and in silico tools such as quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) analysis and molecular docking proved to be a very significant approach for the preliminary stages of designing chemical structures that would fit into the "benign by design" concept in the direction of green and sustainable pharmacy. Metoprolol (MTL) was used as an example, which itself is not readily biodegradable under conditions found in sewage treatment and the aquatic environment. The study provides the theoretical design of new derivatives of MTL which might have the same or improved pharmacological activity and are more degradable in the environment than MTL. However, the in silico toxicity prediction by QSAR of those photo-TPs indicated few of them might be possibly mutagenic and require further testing. This novel approach of theoretically designing 'green' pharmaceuticals can be considered as a step forward towards the green and sustainable pharmacy field. However, more knowledge and further experience have to be collected on the full scope, opportunities and limitations of this approach.

Abstract
A chiral selector of cellulose-2,3-bis(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (CBDMPC) was synthesized by reacting 3,5-dimethylphenyl isocyanate with microcrystalline cellulose dissolved in an ionic liquid of 1-allyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (AMIMCl). The obtained chiral selector was effectively characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and 1H NMR. The selector was reacted with 3-aminopropylsilanized silica gel and the CBDMPC bonded chiral stationary phase (CSP) was obtained. Chromatographic evaluation of the prepared CSPs was conducted by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) and baseline separation of three typical fungicides including hexaconazole, metalaxyl and myclobutanil was achieved using n-hexane/isopropanol as the mobile phase with a flow rate 1.0 mL/min. Experimental results also showed that AMIMCl could be recycled easily and reused in the preparation of CSPs as an effective reaction media.
