Quo Vadis Clozapine? A Bibliometric Study of 45 Years of Research in International Context

The status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research: A global bibliometric and visualized analysis

BACKGROUND

Mitochondria are remarkably dynamic organelles encapsulated by bilayer membranes. The dynamic properties of mitochondria are critical for energy production.

AIMS

The aim of our study is to investigate the global status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research and predict popular topics and directions in the field.

METHODS

Publications related to the studies of mitochondrial dynamics from 2002 to 2021 were retrieved from Web of Science database. A total of 4,576 publications were included. Bibliometric analysis was conducted by visualization of similarities viewer and GraphPadPrism 5 software.

RESULTS

There is an increasing trend of mitochondrial dynamics research during the last 20 years. The cumulative number of publications about mitochondrial dynamics research followed the logistic growth model [Formula: see text]. The USA made the highest contributions to the global research. The journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA)-Molecular Cell Research had the largest publication numbers. Case Western Reserve University is the most contributive institution. The main research orientation and funding agency were cell biology and HHS. All keywords related studies could be divided into three clusters: "Related disease research", "Mechanism research" and "Cell metabolism research".

CONCLUSIONS

Attention should be drawn to the latest popular research and more efforts will be put into mechanistic research, which may inspire new clinical treatments for the associated diseases.

Clozapine research from India: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Although clozapine is much researched in western literature, a review on Indian research on clozapine published in 2010 reported limited data and need for further research in this area.

AIM

We aimed to conduct a systematic review of research on clozapine from India from 2010 to mid-2022 and also compare the same with research output before 2010.

METHODOLOGY

A systematic various search engines, i.e., PUBMED, Medknow, Hinari and Google Scholar was done using the key words clozapine and India. Published articles with clozapine in the title and having an author from India, published during 2010 to July 2022 were included.

RESULTS

Initial Internet and hand searches yielded 280 articles, out of which 126 articles were excluded due to various reasons and 154 articles, were included for the review. This included 84 case reports, 49 original articles, 11 review articles and 10 letters to the editor as comments. We found an increase in the number of publications during the period of 2010-2022 compared to 1997-2009 in all types of publications. Over the years a significant proportion of the articles focused on various side effects of clozapine, factors associated with response and non-response to clozapine and evaluation of outcomes other than efficacy/effectiveness. However, all the studies were limited to a single centre with no multicentric studies on clozapine.

CONCLUSION

Over the last 12 years or so, there is increase in the number of publications on clozapine. However, there is lack of multicentric studies.

The Last Decade Publications on Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) is a usual complication of diabetes with a high incidence and mortality. Many diabetes-related studies have been published in various journals. However, bibliometrics and visual analyses in the domain of DPNP research are still lacking. The study aimed to offer a visual method to observe the systematic overview of global research in this field from 2011 to 2021.

Methods

The publications from the Science Citation Index Expanded in Web of Science (WOS) in the past 11 years (from 2011 to 2021) were collected and sorted out, and those related to DPNP were extracted and analyzed. The article language was limited in English. Then, CiteSpace V was used for the bibliometric analysis of the extracted literature.

Results

A total of 1,422 articles met the inclusion criteria. A continuous but unstable growth in the amounts of papers published on DPNP was observed over the last 11 years. The subject sort of the 1,422 papers mainly concentrates on Endocrinology Metabolism, Clinical neurology and Neurosciences from the WOS. According to the research contribution in the field of DPNP, the United States occupies a leading position, with the highest amounts of publications, citations, open access, and the H- index.

Conclusion

This study provides a visual analysis method for the trend of DPNP, and offers some hidden serviceable information that may define new directions for future research.

Psychosocial and Pharmacological Approaches for Improving Treatment Adherence and Outcomes in People With Severe Schizophrenia: A 10-Year Follow-up

The objective of this study was to understand the psychosocial and pharmacological approaches linked to better treatment adherence and outcomes (psychiatric hospitalizations, clinical severity, and suicide attempts) among patients with schizophrenia receiving the standard treatment in mental health units (MHUs) compared with patients in a community-based, case-managed program (CMP). An observational, prospective (10 y) study was conducted involving patients with severe schizophrenia (N=688). The treatment adherence of patients in the CMP was higher than among those in the MHUs (12.2% vs. 84.3% abandoning treatment; P<0.0001). Hospital admissions and suicide attempts were significantly lower among those treated in the CMP than among those receiving standard care in the MHUs (P<0.001). Scores on the clinical severity scale decreased significantly more in the group in the CMP than in the group in the MHUs (P<0.005). Treatment with long-acting injectable antipsychotic medication was closely linked with higher treatment retention (P<0.001) and fewer hospital admissions and suicide attempts compared with treatment with oral antipsychotics in both patient groups, with the effect greater in the group in the CMP (P<0.001). We highlight how patients with severe schizophrenia treated in a CMP with integrated treatment showed a higher retention rate, fewer psychiatric hospital admissions and suicide attempts, and less clinical severity compared with those receiving standard treatment in MHUs. Treatment with long-acting antipsychotics was also clearly related to these outcomes. A combination of intensive case-managed integrated treatment and treatment with long-acting antipsychotic medication facilitated the achievement of clinical and rehabilitation goals in patients with schizophrenia with severe symptoms and impairment compared with standard care and treatment with oral antipsychotics.

A Bibliometric and Mapping Analysis of Glaucoma Research between 1900 and 2019

PURPOSE

To explore the relevance of scientific production on glaucoma using bibliometric tools.

DESIGN

Bibliographic study.

PARTICIPANTS

Original articles published from 1900 through 2019.

METHODS

We performed a search in Web of Science for documents published between 1900 and 2019. We used bibliometric indicators to explore documents production, dispersion, distribution, time of duplication, and annual growth, as characterized by Price's law of scientific literature growth, Lotka's law, the transient index, and the Bradford model. We also calculated the participation index of different countries and institutions. Finally, we explored with bibliometric mapping the co-occurrence networks for the most frequently used terms in glaucoma research.

Bibliometric indicators for individuals, institutions, and countries.

RESULTS

A total of 33 631 original articles were collected from the timeframe 1900 through 2019. Price's law showed an exponential growth. Scientific production was adjusted better to exponential growth (r = 0.967) than linear growth (r = 0.755). Literature on glaucoma research increased its growth in the last 30 years at a rate of 5.1% per year with a production that doubled its size every 13.9 years. The transience index was 60.08%; this indicates that most of the scientific production is the output of very few authors. Bradford's law showed a high concentration of articles published in a small core of specialized journals. Lotka's law indicated that the distribution of authors is concentrated heavily in small producers. The United States and University of London demonstrated the highest production of original articles. Map network visualization showed the generated term map detailing clusters of closely related terms.

CONCLUSIONS

Glaucoma literature has grown exponentially. A very high rate of transience was found that indicates the presence of numerous authors who sporadically publish on this topic. No evidence of a saturation point in the glaucoma literature was observed.

Oral Versus Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotic Treatment for People With Severe Schizophrenia: A 5-Year Follow-up of Effectiveness

ABSTRACT

The objective here is to compare the effectiveness of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-APs) and oral ones (OAPs) in patients with severe (Global Clinical Impression-Severity ≥ 5) schizophrenia (N = 688). A 5-year follow-up study has been conducted in patients undergoing standard treatment in mental health units (MHUs) or on a severe mental illness program (SMIP). A total of 8.7% of the patients on the SMIP discontinued treatment, whereas 43.6% did so in MHUs (p < 0.0001). In both cases, treatment retention was significantly higher in patients on LAI-APs (p < 0.001). Also, hospital admissions were in both cases fewer among those on LAI-APs (p < 0.001). There was a significant link between suicide attempts and OAP treatment (p < 0.01). Given the relationship between the use of LAI-APs versus oral treatments in achieving higher adherence and less relapses and suicide attempts, the use of second-generation antipsychotics LAIs should be considered more suitable for people with severe schizophrenia.

Bibliometric analysis of publications on house dust mites during 1980-2018

BACKGROUND

The global prevalence of allergic diseases has increased dramatically in recent years and are now recognized as significant chronic diseases worldwide. One of the most important allergens that causes allergic diseases is house dust mites.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to present a bibliometric overview of research published on dust mites between 1980 and 2018.

METHODS

Articles published from 1980 to 2018 were analyzed using bibliometric methods. The keywords "Dust mite*," and "Dermatophagoides" were used in the Web of Science (WoS). Simple linear regression analysis was used to estimate the number of future publications on this subject.

RESULTS

A total of 4742 publications were found, 2552 (53.8%) of them were articles. Most of the articles were on subjects related to immunology (1274; 49.9%) and allergy (1229; 48.1%). Clinical and Experimental Allergy (222; 8.7%) was the journal with the most publications. The USA was the country that most contributed to the literature with 461 (18.1%) articles. The countries producing the most publications on this subject were developed countries. The most active author was W.R. Thomas (66; 2.5%). The most productive institution was the University of Western Australia (91; 3.6%). The most cited article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

CONCLUSION

According to the findings, developed countries were the most productive in publishing on house dust mites. By planning multinational research rather than regional studies, it may be suggested that researchers in underdeveloped or developing countries could also conduct more research on this subject.

Marine Geohazards: A Bibliometric-Based Review

Marine geohazard research has developed during recent decades, as human activities intensified towards deeper waters. Some recent disastrous events (e.g., the 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Japan tsunamis) highlighted geohazards socioeconomic impacts. Marine geohazards encompass an extensive list of features, processes, and events related to Marine Geology. In the scientific literature there are few systematic reviews concerning all of them. Using the search string ‘geohazard*’, this bibliometric-based review explored the scientific databases Web of Science and Scopus to analyze the evolution of peer-reviewed scientific publications and discuss trends and future challenges. The results revealed qualitative and quantitative aspects of 183 publications and indicated 12 categories of hazards, the categories more studied and the scientific advances. Interdisciplinary surveys focusing on the mapping and dating of past events, and the determination of triggers, frequencies, and current perspectives of occurrence (risk) are still scarce. Throughout the upcoming decade, the expansion and improvement of seafloor observatories’ networks, early warning systems, and mitigation plans are the main challenges. Hazardous marine geological events may occur at any time and the scientific community, marine industry, and governmental agencies must cooperate to better understand and monitor the processes involved in order to mitigate the resulting unpredictable damages.

Trends in the scientific literature on atypical antipsychotic drugs in the United Kingdom: a bibliometric study

OBJECTIVE

A bibliometric study was undertaken of peer-reviewed publications on atypical antipsychotic drugs (AADs) from the United Kingdom and the findings are presented herein.

METHODS

We selected the documents from the Scopus database. We applied several production and dispersion bibliometric indicators, including Price's law on the growth of the scientific literature, and Bradford's law. We also calculated a so-called 'participation index' across different countries. The bibliometric data were thereafter correlated with social and health data from the UK, including total per capita expenditure on health and gross domestic expenditure.

RESULTS

A total of 4156 original manuscripts were published within the timeframe 1967-2015. Our results are in accord with Price's law, with scientific output demonstrating exponential growth (r = 0.9227, as against an r = 0.8766 after adjustment). The drugs most widely evaluated were clozapine (465 documents), olanzapine (263) and risperidone (248). Stratification into Bradford zones produced a nucleus represented by the Journal of Psychopharmacology (168 articles) and British Journal of Psychiatry (159 articles). A total of 1250 different journals were evaluated.

CONCLUSIONS

Publications on AADs in the UK have shown exponential growth across the studied period, which is in line with the progressively burgeoning novel AAD releases. No evidence of a saturation point was observed.

Using Google Maps to display the pattern of coauthor collaborations on the topic of schizophrenia: A systematic review between 1937 and 2017

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting more than 21 million people worldwide. Scientific collaborations are required to research schizophrenia. However, there have been limited publications to date investigating scientific collaborations in schizophrenia research or reporting individual researchers' achievements(IRA) for authors. This study aimed to investigate the pattern of coauthor collaborations in schizophrenia research. We conducted a bibliometric study of international scientific publications on schizophrenia. About 57,964 abstracts were identified and downloaded from MEDLINE. All were examined using social network analysis (SNA) on February 20, 2018. The clusters of author nationalities, the authors, and the medical subject headings (MESH) terms were presented on Google Maps. A total of 36,934 articles met the inclusion criteria. The mean number of authors per article increased from 4.5 in 2008 to 6.4 in 2017. The proportion of published articles decreased in North America from 46.7% in 2008, to 32.3% in 2017. In contrast, the proportion of published articles in Asia increased from 14.5% in 1998 to 23.9% in 2017. Among the countries generating schizophrenia research the most prominent is China (corr. = 0.98), followed by India (corr. = 0.94), and France (corr. = 0.93). The representative of the biggest cluster is the author Michael F Green from the United States. The top three MESH terms are physiopathology, schizophrenic psychology, and complications. The scientific interest in schizophrenia remains significant. The application of bibliometric indicators of production is evident in the growth of scientific literature on the topic of schizophrenia.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Scientific Production on Second-Generation Anti-Psychotic Drugs in Malaysia

OBJECTIVE

We carried out a bibliometric study on the scientific papers related to second-generation antipsychotic drugs (SGAs) in Malaysia.

METHODS

With the SCOPUS database, we selected those documents made in Malaysia whose title included descriptors related to SGAs. We applied bibliometric indicators of production and dispersion, as Price's law and Bradford's law, respectively. We also calculated the participation index of the different countries. The bibliometric data were also been correlated with some social and health data from Malaysia (total per capita expenditure on health and gross domestic expenditure on R&D).

RESULTS

We found 105 original documents published between 2004 and 2016. Our results fulfilled Price's law, with scientific production on SGAs showing exponential growth (r = 0.401, vs. r = 0.260 after linear adjustment). The drugs most studied are olanzapine (9 documents), clozapine (7), and risperidone (7). Division into Bradford zones yields a nucleus occupied by the Medical Journal of Malaysia, Singapore Medical Journal, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, and Pharmacogenomics. Totally, 63 different journals were used, but only one in the top four journals had an impact factor being greater than 3.

CONCLUSION

The publications on SGAs in Malaysia have undergone exponential growth, without evidence a saturation point.

Trends in the Study of Motivation in Schizophrenia: A Bibliometric Analysis of Six Decades of Research (1956-2017)

Motivation in schizophrenia has been a key research aim for several decades. Motivation is a very complex process underlying negative symptoms that has been assessed and identified using very different instruments and terminologies. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the growing literature production and highlights an extensive set of variables to better understand the study of motivation. Electronic databases were searched in order to compile relevant studies of motivation in individuals with schizophrenia. The initial search identified 3,248 potentially interesting records, and of these, 161 articles published between 1956 and 2017 were finally included. Information such as year of publication, journal, country, and number of authors was codified. Variables related to sample characteristics, methodological aspects, and motivational terms were also extracted. The results revealed a significant growth trend in literature production, especially since the 2000s, with reward as the main term studied. In addition, questionnaires were identified as the preferred instrument to assess motivation in patients with schizophrenia. Other aspects such as country of publication, authors, journals of publication, and co-citation network analysis were also examined. The discussion offers recommendations for future research.
