Abstract
We aimed to investigate the differential diagnosis of depressive episodes in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) using peripheral blood cytokine expression levels. The levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, IL4, and IL-12; interferon (IFN)-γ; and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were measured in patients with MDD and BD presenting acute episodes in an inpatient psychiatric setting. The expression levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, and IFN-γ in the MDD and BD groups were higher than those in the control group (P < .05), but there was no significant difference between the patient groups and control group. Only the expression levels of TNF-α and IL-4 were higher in both groups than in the control group, and the BD group had higher levels than the MDD group (P < .05). The expression levels of IL-17, IFN-γ, IL-10, and IL-4 were significantly higher in BD-related manic episodes than in BD-related depressive episodes (P < .05). IL-6, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-4 levels were higher in BD-related depressive episodes than in MDD-related depressive episodes (P < .05). The receiver operating characteristic curve test for MDD and BD and the area under the curve for IL-4 revealed good clinical predictability. Patients with MDD and BD exhibited different cytokine profiles when experiencing acute episodes; patients with BD exhibited a more severe immune-inflammatory response system-compensatory immunoregulatory response system (CIRS) imbalance. IL-4 was found to have diagnostic value in differentiating between active depressive episodes in MDD and BD.

Abstract
Mood disorders can be considered among the most common and debilitating mental disorders. Major depression, as an example of mood disorders, is known to severely reduce the quality of life as well as psychosocial functioning of those affected. Its impact on the burden of disease worldwide has been enormous, with the World Health Organisation projecting depression to be the leading cause of mental illness by 2030. Despite several studies on the subject, little has been done to contextualise the condition in Africa, coupled with the fact that there is still much to be understood on the subject. This review attempts to shed more light on the prevalence of depression in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), its pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnosis and the experimental models available to study depression within the sub-region. It also evaluates the contribution of the sub-region to the global research output of depression as well as bottlenecks associated with full exploitation of the sub region's resources to manage the disorder.

Abstract
Many patients under treatment for mood disorders, in particular patients with bipolar mood disorders, experience episodes of mood switching from one state to another. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism of mood switching, spontaneously or induced by drug treatment. Animal models have also been used to test the role of psychotropic drugs in the switching of mood states. We examine the possible relationship between the pharmacology of psychotropic drugs and their reported incidents of induced mood switching, with reference to the various hypotheses of mechanisms of mood switching.

Abstract
Lipidomics has been established as a potential tool for the investigation of mental diseases. However, the composition analysis and the comparison of the peripheral lipids regarding adult women with major depressive depression (MDD) or bipolar depression (BPD) has been poorly addressed. In the present study, age-matched female individuals with MDD (n = 28), BPD (n = 22) and healthy controls (HC, n = 25) were enrolled. Clinical symptoms were assessed and the plasma samples were analyzed by comprehensive lipid profiling based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). We found that the composition of lipids was remarkably changed in the patients with MDD and BPD when compared to HC or compared to each other. Moreover, we identified diagnostic potential biomarkers comprising 20 lipids that can distinguish MDD from HC (area under the curve, AUC = 0.897) and 8 lipids that can distinguish BPD from HC (AUC = 0.784), as well as 13 lipids were identified to distinguish MDD from BPD with moderate reliability (AUC = 0.860). This study provides further understanding of abnormal lipid metabolism in adult women with MDD and BPD and may develop lipid classifiers able to effectively discriminate MDD from BPD and HC.

Abstract
Pharmacogenomics can identify polymorphisms in genes involved in drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics determining differences in efficacy and safety and causing inter-individual variability in drug response. Therefore, pharmacogenomics can help clinicians in optimizing therapy based on patient's genotype, also in psychiatric and neurological settings. However, pharmacogenetic screenings for psychotropic drugs are not routinely employed in diagnosis and monitoring of patients treated with mood stabilizers, such as carbamazepine and valproate, because their benefit in clinical practice is still controversial. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on pharmacogenetic biomarkers of these anticonvulsant drugs.

Abstract
Efforts to improve the prognosis of subjects with anorexia nervosa [AN] through the development of specific therapeutic interventions have yielded unsatisfactory results. AN can be perceived as a mental disorder that is clinically composed of disturbed psychopathological dimensions found in major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and delusional disorder somatic type. Future treatment strategies of patients with AN might target these multiple psychopathological dimensions. Considering that each of these dimensions is known to be best treated with psychopharmacologic drugs such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotic drugs, AN treatment guidelines may need to consider prescribing them to patients.

Abstract
Mixed features of the opposite nominal mood-polarity are increasingly recognized in both depressive and [hypo]manic phases of major affective disorders. They are associated with major increases of risk of suicidal behaviors. The authors reviewed the association of suicidal behavior with mixed features in both major depressive and bipolar disorders, as well as potentially relevant adverse effects of antidepressant treatment and use of alternative treatments aimed at minimizing agitation and suicidal risk.

Abstract
Despite the impressive advancements in the neuropathology of mood disorders, patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are often misdiagnosed on the initial presentation with major depressive disorder (MDD). With supporting evidence from neuroimaging studies, the abnormal functional connectivity (FC) of the hippocampus has been associated with various mood disorders, including BD and MDD. However, the features of the hippocampal FC underlying MDD and BD have not been directly compared. This study aims to investigate the hippocampal resting-state FC (rsFC) analyses to distinguish these two clinical conditions. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data was collected from a sample group of 30 patients with BD, 29 patients with MDD and 30 healthy controls (HCs). One-way ANOVA was employed to assess the potential differences of the hippocampus FC across all subjects. BD patients exhibited increased FC of the bilateral anterior/posterior hippocampus with lingual gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) relative to patients MDD patients. In comparison with HCs, patients with BD and MDD had an increased FC between the right anterior hippocampus and lingual gyrus and a decreased FC between the right posterior hippocampus and right IFG. The results revealed a distinct hippocampal FC in MDD patients compared with that observed in BD patients. These findings may assist investigators in attempting to distinguish mood disorders by using fMRI data.
