Photodegradation of Antibiotics by Noncovalent Porphyrin-Functionalized TiO2 in Water for the Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance Risk Management

Integrative analysis of multi machine learning models for tetracycline photocatalytic degradation with MOFs in wastewater treatment

This study focuses on the utilization of connectionist models, specifically Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Genetic Algorithm-Particle Swarm Optimization (GAPSO) integrated with a least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) to forecast the degradation of tetracycline (TC) through photocatalysis using Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the viability and precision of these connectionist models in estimating the efficiency of TC degradation, particularly within the context of wastewater treatment. The input parameters for these models cover essential MOF characteristics, such as pore size and surface area, along with critical operational factors, such as pH, TC concentration, catalyst dosage, and illumination duration, all of which are linked to the photocatalytic performance of MOFs. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the illumination duration is the primary influencer of TC photodegradation with MOF photocatalysts, while the MOFs' surface area is the second crucial parameter shaping the efficiency and dynamics of the TC-MOF photocatalytic system. The developed LSSVM models display impressive predictive capabilities, effectively forecasting the experimental degradation of TC with high accuracy. Among these models, the GAPSO-LSSVM model excels as the top performer, achieving notable evaluation metrics, including STD, RMSE, MSE, MRE, and R2 at values of 3.09, 3.42, 11.71, 5.95, and 0.986, respectively. In comparison, the PSO-LSSVM, ICA-LSSVM, and GA-LSSVM models yield mean relative errors of 6.18%, 7.57%, and 11.37%, respectively. These outcomes highlight the exceptional predictive capabilities of the GAPSO-LSSVM model, solidifying its position as the most accurate and dependable model for predicting TC photodegradation in this study. This study contributes to advancing photocatalytic research and effectively reinforces the importance of leveraging machine learning methodologies for tackling environmental challenges.

Enantiomeric Resolution and Enantiomer Isolation of H2 TPPS4 J-Aggregate from Aqueous Solution Is Enabled by Vortexes

Protonated achiral H₂ TPPS4 spontaneously self-arranges at acids pH and high ionic strength to build mesoscopic J-aggregates that are intrinsically chiral. According to the symmetry rule aggregation leads to a racemate that, however, can be unbalanced by chemical (chiral pollutants) or physical stimuli (as vortexing the solution). Vortexing the title racemate, in principle, might either induce chiral separation or chiral enrichment. Indeed, herein it is shown that vortices enable the resolution of this racemic solution exploiting the tendency to deposit, onto the quartz cuvette walls, of the enantiomer favored by the stirring sense. Simultaneously, over time, it was found that the opposite chiral conformation becomes prevalent in solution realizing a significant enantiomeric resolution. Therefore, after removing all stirring-favored chiral J-aggregate from the solution, the recovering and isolating of the desired enantiomers from the cuvette walls was successfully obtained without complex procedures. In this sense, it has been demonstrated that the stirring forces are executively able to fulfil the chiral separation in H₂ TPPS4 J-aggregates, employed as model of a self-assembled system in aqueous solution.

Spectroscopic Investigations of Porphyrin-TiO2 Nanoparticles Complexes

This study presents the spectral characterization of TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with three porphyrin derivatives: 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-aminophenyl) porphyrin (TAPP), 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (TMPP), and 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP). UV-Vis absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopic studies of these porphyrins and their complexes with TiO₂ NPs were performed. In addition, the efficiency of singlet oxygen generation, the key species in photodynamic therapy, was investigated. UV-Vis absorption spectra of the NPs complexes showed the characteristic bands of porphyrins. These allowed us to determine the loaded porphyrins on TiO₂ NPs functionalized with porphyrins. FTIR-ATR revealed the formation of porphyrin-TiO₂ complexes, suggesting that porphyrin adsorption on TiO₂ may involve the pyrroles in the porphyrin ring, or the radicals of the porphyrin derivative. The quantum yield for singlet oxygen generation by the studied porphyrin complexes with TiO₂ was higher compared to bare porphyrins for TAPP and TMPP, while for the TCPP-TiO₂ NPs complex, a decrease was observed, but still maintained a good efficiency. The TiO₂ NPs conjugates can be promising candidates to be tested in photodynamic therapy in vitro assays.

Photodegradation of oxolinic acid in aquaculture effluents under solar irradiation: is it possible to enhance efficiency by the use of TiO2/carbon quantum dots composites?

Antibiotics, such as oxolinic acid (OXA), in aquaculture effluents contribute to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance, which makes it urgent to develop efficient and sustainable processes for their removal. Aiming a photocatalytic degradation under solar radiation, different carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were produced in this work through a bottom-up hydrothermal methodology and incorporated into TiO₂ by a simple calcination method. A total of thirteen materials were synthesized and tested for OXA photocatalytic removal from synthetic and real matrices. Among them, CQDs produced with citric acid and incorporated into TiO₂ at 4% (w/w) (TiO₂/CQDs-CA 4% (w/w)) were the most efficient photocatalysts, providing an OXA half-life time (t_1/2) decrease of 91%, 79% and 85% in phosphate buffer solution (PBS), synthetic sea salts (SSS) and brackish aquaculture effluent (BAE), respectively. Therefore, the herein synthesized TiO₂/CQDs-CA 4% (w/w) composites have shown to be promising materials for a sustainable solar-driven removal of antibiotics from aquaculture effluents.

Applications of Heterogeneous Photocatalysis to the Degradation of Oxytetracycline in Water: A Review

Photocatalytic processes are being studied extensively as potential advanced wastewater treatments for the removal of pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other recalcitrant micropollutants from the effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widespread antibiotic which is frequently detected in surface water bodies as a recalcitrant and persistent micropollutant. This review provides an update on advances in heterogeneous photocatalysis for the degradation of OTC in water under UV light, sunlight and visible-light irradiation. Photocatalysts based on pure semiconducting oxides are rarely used, due to the problem of rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs. To overcome this issue, a good strategy could be the coupling of two different semiconducting compounds with different conduction and valence bands. Several methods are described to enhance the performances of catalysts, such as doping of the oxide with metal and/or non-metal elements, surface functionalization, composites and nano-heterojunction. Furthermore, a discussion on non-oxidic photocatalysts is briefly provided, focusing on the application of graphene-based nanocomposites for the effective treatment of OTC.

An insight into tetracycline photocatalytic degradation by MOFs using the artificial intelligence technique

Tetracyclines (TCs) have been extensively used for humans and animal diseases treatment and livestock growth promotion. The consumption of such antibiotics has been ever-growing nowadays due to various bacterial infections and other pathologic conditions, resulting in more discharge into the aquatic environments. This brings threats to ecosystems and human bodies. Up to now, several attempts have been made to reduce TC amounts in the wastewater, among which photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process, is known as an eco-friendly and efficient technology. In this regard, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been known as the promising materials as photocatalysts. Thus, studying TC photocatalytic degradation by MOFs would help scientists and engineers optimize the process in terms of effective parameters. Nevertheless, the costly and time-consuming experimental methods, having instrumental errors, encouraged the authors to use the computational method for a more comprehensive assessment. In doing so, a wide-ranging databank including 374 experimental data points was gathered from the literature. A powerful machine learning method of Gaussian process regression (GPR) model with four kernel functions was proposed to estimate the TC degradation in terms of MOFs features (surface area and pore volume) and operational parameters (illumination time, catalyst dosage, TC concentration, pH). The GPR models performed quite well, among which GPR-Matern model shows the most accurate performance with R², MRE, MSE, RMSE, and STD of 0.981, 12.29, 18.03, 4.25, and 3.33, respectively. In addition, an analysis of sensitivity was carried out to assess the effect of the inputs on the TC photodegradation by MOFs. It revealed that the illumination time and the surface area play a significant role in the decomposition activity.

Supramolecular Chirality in Porphyrin Self-assembly Systems in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:

The self-assembly process appears as a powerful and attractive strategy for constructing complex supramolecules by the spontaneous organization of appropriate building blocks. In this scenario, water-soluble porphyrinoids lend themselves as ideal paradigms to disclose the self-assembly phenomenon by exploiting their well-known tendency to build aggregates in aqueous media via weak non-covalent forces. Nevertheless, the spontaneous organization of achiral porphyrins can result in a final chiral superstructure moving away from single-molecule behaviour to supramolecular chirality. Therefore, over the years numerous attempts have been implemented to investigate how a porphyrin aggregate, made up of achiral monomers, becomes not-symmetric and which processes govern the bias for a certain enantiomeric assembly rather than another. Thus, in this mini-review, we exclusively discuss the main strategies for designing and building chiral aggregates in water from achiral porphyrin monomers, with particular regard to their chiroptical features.

Photosensitized Thermoplastic Nano-Photocatalysts Active in the Visible Light Range for Potential Applications Inside Extraterrestrial Facilities

Among different depollution methods, photocatalysis activated by solar light is promising for terrestrial outdoor applications. However, its use in underground structures and/or microgravity environments (e.g., extraterrestrial structures) is forbidden. In these cases, there are issues related to the energy emitted from the indoor lighting system because it is not high enough to promote the photocatalytic mechanism. Moreover, microgravity does not allow the recovery of the photocatalytic slurry from the depolluted solution. In this work, the synthesis of a filmable nanocomposite based on semiconductor nanoparticles supported by photosensitized copolyacrylates was performed through a bulk in situ radical copolymerization involving a photosensitizer macromonomer. The macromonomer and the nanocomposites were characterized through UV-Vis, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopies, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the sensitized nanocomposites was studied through photodegradation tests of common dyes and recalcitrant xenobiotic pollutants, employing UV-Vis and visible range (λ > 390 nm) light radiations. The sensitized nanocomposite photocatalytic performances increased about two times that of the unsensitized nanocomposite and that of visible range light radiation alone (>390 nm). The experimental data have shown that these new systems, applied as thin films, have the potential for use in indoor deep underground and extraterrestrial structures.

Norfloxacin and gentamicin degradation catalyzed by manganese porphyrins under mild conditions: the importance of toxicity assessment

The current work assessed the degradation degree and the degradation products derived from norfloxacin (NOR) and gentamicin (GEN) using iodosylbenzene and iodobenzene diacetate, in the presence of manganese porphyrin as catalysts. Better results for NOR degradation (> 80%) were obtained when more hydrophobic porphyrins were employed. β-brominated manganese porphyrins showed a lower GEN degradation (~ 25%) than the non-brominated ones (~ 35%), probably due to their steric hindrance. In any case, complete mineralization was achieved neither for NOR nor for GEN, and the assignment of the generated products, complemented by the study of their toxicity, was an important step performed. From the obtained results, no correlation was found between the number of identified products and the reported toxicity value (r_Spearman,NOR = 0.006; p value = 0.986 and r_Spearman,GEN =  - 0,198; p value = 0.583), which reinforces the idea of synergism and antagonistic phenomena. The higher degradation degree could have led to products of lower steric hindrance and easier penetration into the A. fischeri cells, which subsequently led to an increase in toxicity for these experiments. In most cases, the products presented higher toxicity than the original compound, which raises a concern about their occurrence in environmental matrices.

Advanced oxidation technologies and constructed wetlands in aquaculture farms: What do we know so far about micropollutant removal?

Aquaculture is the fastest growing animal food-producing sector. Water is the central resource for aquaculture, and it is essential that its quality be preserved. Micropollutants (MPs) can reach aquaculture through anthropogenic addition or inlet water, and may cause harmful effects such as endocrine disruption and antibiotic resistance, adversely affecting the fish species being farmed. Furthermore, the discharge of aquaculture effluents into the environment may contribute to the deterioration of water courses. In this sense, the implementation of environmentally responsible measures in aquaculture farms is imperative for the protection of ecosystems and human health. The European Commission (EC) has recently launched a guiding document promoting ecological aquaculture practices; however, options for water treatment are still lacking. Conventional processes are not designed to deal with MPs; this review article consolidates relevant information on the application of advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) and constructed wetlands (CWs) as potential strategies in this regard. Although 161 studies on the application of AOTs or CWs in aquaculture have already been published, only 34 focused on MPs (28 on AOTs and 6 on CWs), whereas the others reported the removal of contaminants such as bacteria, organic matter, solids and inorganic ions. No study coupling both treatments has been reported to date for the removal of MPs from aquaculture waters. AOTs and CWs are prospective alternatives for the treatment of aquacultural aqueous matrices. However, the type of aquaculture activity and the specifications of these available technologies should be considered while selecting the most suitable treatment option.

Oxidative Degradation of Pharmaceuticals: The Role of Tetrapyrrole-Based Catalysts

Nowadays, society’s widespread consumption of pharmaceutical drugs and the consequent accumulation of such compounds or their metabolites in effluents requires the development of efficient strategies and systems that lead to their effective degradation. This can be done through oxidative processes, in which tetrapyrrolic macrocycles (porphyrins, phthalocyanines) deserve special attention since they are among the most promising degradation catalysts. This paper presents a review of the literature over the past ten years on the major advances made in the development of oxidation processes of pharmaceuticals in aqueous solutions using tetrapyrrole-based catalysts. The review presents a brief discussion of the mechanisms involved in these oxidative processes and is organized by the degradation of families of pharmaceutical compounds, namely antibiotics, analgesics and neurological drugs, among others. For each family, a critical analysis and discussion of the fundamental roles of tetrapyrrolic macrocycles are presented, regarding both photochemical degradative processes and direct oxidative chemical degradation.

Biochar-TiO2 magnetic nanocomposites for photocatalytic solar-driven removal of antibiotics from aquaculture effluents

Contamination of surrounding waters with antibiotics by aquaculture effluents can be problematic due to the possible increase of bacterial resistance, making it crucial the efficient treatment of those effluents before their release into the environment. In this work, the application of waste-based magnetic biochar/titanium dioxide (BC/TiO₂) composite materials on the photodegradation of two antibiotics widely used in aquaculture (sulfadiazine (SDZ) and oxolinic acid (OXA)) was assessed. Four materials were synthesized: BCMag (magnetized BC), BCMag_TiO₂ (BCMag functionalized with TiO₂), BC_TiO₂_MagIn and BC_TiO₂_MagEx (BC functionalized with TiO₂ and afterwards magnetized by in-situ and ex-situ approaches, respectively). SDZ half-life time (t_1/2) noticeably decreased 3.9 and 3.4 times in presence of BCMag_TiO₂ and BC_TiO₂_MagEx, respectively. In the case of OXA, even though differences were not so substantial, the produced photocatalysts also allowed for a decrease in t_1/2 (2.6 and 1.7 times, in presence of BCMag_TiO₂ and BC_TiO₂_MagEx, respectively). Overall, the here synthesized BC/TiO₂ magnetic nanocomposites through a circular economy process are promising photocatalysts for a sustainable solar-driven removal of antibiotics from aquaculture effluents.

Heteroaryl-Ethylenes as New Lead Compounds in the Fight against High Priority Bacterial Strains

The widespread use of antibiotics has led to a gradual increase in drug-resistant bacterial infections, which severely weakens the clinical efficacy of antibacterial therapies. In recent decades, stilbenes aroused great interest because of their high bioavailability, as well as their manifold biological activity. Our research efforts are focused on synthetic heteroaromatic stilbene derivatives as they represent a potentially new type of antibiotic with a wide antibacterial spectrum. Herein, a preliminary molecular modeling study and a versatile synthetic scheme allowed us to define eight heteroaromatic stilbene derivatives with potential antimicrobial activity. In order to evaluate our compound’s activity spectrum and antibacterial ability, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests have been performed on Gram-positive and Gram-negative ATCC strains. Compounds PB4, PB5, PB7, and PB8 showed the best values in terms of MIC and were also evaluated for MBC, which was found to be greater than MIC, confirming a bacteriostatic activity. For all compounds, we evaluated toxicity on colon-rectal adenocarcinoma cells tumor cells (CaCo2), once it was established that the whole selected set was more active than 5-Fluorouracil in reducing CaCo-2 cells viability. To the best of our knowledge, the biological assays have shown for these derivatives an excellent bacteriostatic activity, compared to similar molecular structures previously reported, thus paving the way for a new class of antibiotic compounds.

Antibiotics in Aquaculture Wastewater: Is It Feasible to Use a Photodegradation-Based Treatment for Their Removal?

Aquacultures are a sector facing a huge development: farmers usually applying antibiotics to treat and/or prevent diseases. Consequently, effluents from aquaculture represent a source of antibiotics for receiving waters, where they pose a potential threat due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) induction. This has recently become a major concern and it is expectable that regulations on antibiotics’ discharge will be established in the near future. Therefore, it is urgent to develop treatments for their removal from wastewater. Among the different possibilities, photodegradation under solar radiation may be a sustainable option. Thus, this review aims at providing a survey on photolysis and photocatalysis in view of their application for the degradation of antibiotics from aquaculture wastewater. Experimental facts, factors affecting antibiotics’ removal and employed photocatalysts were hereby addressed. Moreover, gaps in this research area, as well as future challenges, were identified.

Data mining for pesticide decontamination using heterogeneous photocatalytic processes

Pesticides are chemical compounds used to kill pests and weeds. Due to their nature, pesticides are potentially toxic to many organisms, including humans. Among the various methods used to decontaminate pesticides from the environment, the heterogeneous photocatalytic process is one of the most effective approaches. This study focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques used to generate optimum predictive models for pesticide decontamination processes using heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. In the present study, 537 valid cases from 45 articles from January 2000 to April 2020 were filtered based on their content collected and analyzed. Based on cross-industry standard process (CRISP) methodology, a set of four classifiers were applied: Decision Trees (DT), Bayesian Network (BN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Feed Forward Multilayer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLP). To compare the accuracy of the selected algorithms, accuracy, and sensitivity criteria were applied. After the final analysis, the DT classification algorithm with seven factors of prediction, the accuracy of 91.06%, and sensitivity of 80.32% was selected as the optimal predictor model.
