Abstract
Plant disease outbreaks are increasing in a world facing climate change and globalized markets, representing a serious threat to food security. Kiwifruit Bacterial Canker (KBC), caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), was selected as a case study for being an example of a pandemic disease that severely impacted crop production, leading to huge economic losses, and for the effort that has been made to control this disease. This review provides an in-depth and critical analysis on the scientific progress made for developing alternative tools for sustainable KBC management. Their status in terms of technological maturity is discussed and a set of opportunities and threats are also presented. The gradual replacement of susceptible kiwifruit cultivars, with more tolerant ones, significantly reduced KBC incidence and was a major milestone for Psa containment - which highlights the importance of plant breeding. Nonetheless, this is a very laborious process. Moreover, the potential threat of Psa evolving to more virulent biovars, or resistant lineages to existing control methods, strengthens the need of keep on exploring effective and more environmentally friendly tools for KBC management. Currently, plant elicitors and beneficial fungi and bacteria are already being used in the field with some degree of success. Precision agriculture technologies, for improving early disease detection and preventing pathogen dispersal, are also being developed and optimized. These include hyperspectral technologies and forecast models for Psa risk assessment, with the latter being slightly more advanced in terms of technological maturity. Additionally, plant protection products based on innovative formulations with molecules with antibacterial activity against Psa (e.g., essential oils, phages and antimicrobial peptides) have been validated primarily in laboratory trials and with few compounds already reaching field application. The lessons learned with this pandemic disease, and the acquired scientific and technological knowledge, can be of importance for sustainably managing other plant diseases and handling future pandemic outbreaks.

Abstract
Kiwifruit canker is caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and is one of the most destructive diseases of kiwifruit worldwide. Sulfur can improve the deposit of lignin in kiwifruit stems and induce disease resistance, but the action mechanism at the molecular level remains unclear. This omics-based study revealed that sulfur-induced S lignin synthesis contributes to disease resistance. Histological staining verified sulfur-enhanced total lignin deposition in kiwifruit stems. High-performance liquid chromatography and confocal Raman microscopy showed that sulfur-activated S lignin was mainly deposited in the cell corner. Metabolome and transcriptome analysis revealed that the levels of phenylpropanoid pathway S lignin precursors sinapic acid and sinapyl alcohol were significantly increased and 16 laccase genes were upregulated. Sulfur-induced resistance defense promoted elevated laccase activity by activating the laccase genes, participating in sinapic acid and sinapyl alcohol substance synthesis, and ultimately polymerizing S lignin at cell corner against kiwifruit canker disease.

Abstract
Kiwifruit canker disease, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is the main threat to kiwifruit production worldwide. Currently, there is no safe and effective disease prevention method; therefore, biological control technologies are being explored for Psa. In this study, Bacillus velezensis WL-23 was isolated from the leaf microbial community of kiwifruit and used to control kiwifruit cankers. Indoor confrontation experiments showed that both WL-23 and its aseptic filtrate had excellent inhibitory activity against the main fungal and bacterial pathogens of kiwifruit. Changes in OD600, relative conductivity, alkaline proteinase, and nucleic acid content were recorded during Psa growth after treatment with the aseptic filtrate, showing that Psa proliferation was inhibited and the integrity of the cell membrane was destroyed; this was further verified using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In vivo, WL-23 promoted plant growth, increased plant antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduced canker incidence. Therefore, WL-23 is expected to become a biological control agent due to its great potential to contribute to sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) are a category of chemical compounds widely used as additives in food industry. So far, the use of SO2 in fruit and vegetable industry has been indispensable although its safety concerns have been controversial. This article comprehensively reviews the chemical interactions of SO2 with the components of fruit and vegetable products, elaborates its mechanism of antimicrobial, anti-browning, and antioxidation, discusses its roles in regulation of sulfur metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS)/redox, resistance induction, and quality maintenance in fruits and vegetables, summarizes the application technology of SO2 and its safety in human (absorption, metabolism, toxicity, regulation), and emphasizes the intrinsic metabolism of SO2 and its consequences for the postharvest physiology and safety of fresh fruits and vegetables. In order to fully understand the benefits and risks of SO2, more research is needed to evaluate the molecular mechanisms of SO2 metabolism in the cells and tissues of fruits and vegetables, and to uncover the interaction mechanisms between SO2 and the components of fruits and vegetables as well as the efficacy and safety of bound SO2. This review has important guiding significance for adjusting an applicable definition of maximum residue limit of SO2 in food.

Abstract
Kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) is commonly covered by fruit hairs (trichomes) that affect kiwifruit popularity in the commercial market. However, it remains largely unknown which gene mediates trichome development in kiwifruit. In this study, we analyzed two kiwifruit species, A. eriantha (Ae) with long, straight, and bushy trichomes and A. latifolia (Al) with short, distorted, and spare trichomes, by second- and third-generation RNA sequencing. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the expression of the NAP1 gene, a positive regulator of trichome development, was suppressed in Al compared with that in Ae. Additionally, the alternative splicing of AlNAP1 produced two short transcripts (AlNAP1-AS1 and AlNAP1-AS2) lacking multiple exons, in addition to a full-length transcript of AlNAP1-FL. The defects of trichome development (short and distorted trichome) in Arabidopsis nap1 mutant were rescued by AlNAP1-FL but not by AlNAP1-AS1. AlNAP1-FL gene does not affect trichome density in nap1 mutant. The qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the alternative splicing further reduces the level of functional transcripts. These results indicated that the short and distorted trichomes in Al might be caused by the suppression and alternative splicing of AlNAP1. Together, we revealed that AlNAP1 mediates trichome development and is a good candidate target for genetic modification of trichome length in kiwifruit.

Abstract
Kiwifruit bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a severe global disease. However, effective biological control agents for controlling Psa are currently unavailable. This study aimed to screen potential biological control agents against Psa from the kiwifruit rhizosphere. In this study, a total of 722 isolates of bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of kiwifruit orchards in five regions of China. A total of 82 strains of rhizosphere bacteria showed antagonistic effects against Psa on plates. Based on amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), these antagonistic rhizosphere bacteria were grouped into 17 clusters. BLAST analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed 95.44%-100% sequence identity to recognized species. The isolated strains belonged to genus Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Flavobacterium, Glutamicibacter, Lysinibacillus, Lysobacter, Pseudomonas, Pseudarthrobacter, and Streptomyces, respectively. A total of four representative strains were selected to determine their extracellular metabolites and cell-free supernatant activity against Psa in vitro. They all produce protease and none of them produce glucanase. One strain of Pseudomonas sp. produces siderophore. Strains of Bacillus spp. and Flavobacteria sp. produce cellulase, and Flavobacteria sp. also produce chitinase. Our results suggested that the kiwifruit rhizosphere soils contain a variety of antagonistic bacteria that effectively inhibit the growth of Psa.

Abstract
Kiwifruit bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a major threat to kiwifruit worldwide, and effective control measures are still lacking. Sulfur, as a mineral, has been proved to improve plants' resistance to pathogens. It is of great significance to study the effect of sulfur on rhizosphere microorganisms in kiwifruit planting areas infected by Psa for controlling kiwifruit canker. In this study, the sulfur powder and organic fertilizer were mixed as base fertilizer to treat the soil in the area where kiwifruit bacterial canker occurs. We investigated the incidence of kiwifruit bacterial canker in 2018 and 2019 after sulfur application and the changes in microbial characteristics and community composition structure in the kiwifruit rhizosphere by using the plate-counting method and high-throughput sequencing technology. Fertilization treatments of kiwifruit roots with sulfur and organic fertilizer reduced kiwifruit bacterial canker severity. The diversity of soil microbial communities increased significantly after sulfur application in the range of 1.0~2.0 kg/m3. In particular, the bacterial genera level showed a high diversity after 2 years of sulfur application, reaching more than 516 genera. Furthermore, sulfur treatment resulted in a significant increase in specific microbial taxa, including members of the Acidothermus, norank_f__HSB_OF53-F07, and norank_f __Acidobacteriaceae__Subgroup_1. Moreover, the proportion of the dominant bacteria Acidothermus in the population showed an increasing trend. Altogether, the sulfur application is the key factor leading to microbial differences in kiwifruit rhizosphere soil. Appropriate sulfur can improve microbial structure characteristics of kiwifruit rhizosphere soil, increase bacterial diversity index, and change bacterial community composition structure.
