Textural and Thermal Properties of the Novel Fucoidan/Nano-Oxides Hybrid Materials with Cosmetic, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Potential

A Novel Method for the Preparation of Casein-Fucoidan Composite Nanostructures

The aim of the study was to develop casein-fucoidan composite nanostructures through the method of polyelectrolyte complexation and subsequent spray drying. To determine the optimal parameters for the preparation of the composite structures and to investigate the influence of the production and technological parameters on the main structural and morphological characteristics of the obtained structures, 3(k-p) fractional factorial design was applied. The independent variables (casein to fucoidan ratio, glutaraldehyde concentration, and spray intensity) were varied at three levels (low, medium, and high) and their effect on the yield, the average particle size, and the zeta potential were evaluated statistically. Based on the obtained results, models C1F1G1Sp.30, C1F1G2Sp.40, and C1F1G3Sp.50, which have an average particle size ranging from (0.265 ± 0.03) µm to (0.357 ± 0.02) µm, a production yield in the range (48.9 ± 2.9) % to (66.4 ± 2.2) %, and a zeta potential varying from (-20.12 ± 0.9) mV to (-25.71 ± 1.0) mV, were selected as optimal for further use as drug delivery systems.

Development of a Binderless Particleboard from Brown Seaweed Sargassum spp

Since 2010, huge quantities of Sargassum spp. algae have been proliferating in the Atlantic Ocean and stranding on Caribbean beaches, causing major economic, environmental, and health problems. In this study, an innovative high-density binderless particleboard was developed using uniaxial thermo-compression coupled with a cooling system. The raw material consisted of ground Sargassum seaweeds pre-treated by twin-screw extrusion with water to remove sea salt. The raw material and the particleboards were produced by using various analytical techniques such as Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), or Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The experimental conditions for thermo-compression (temperature, pressure, time) were evaluated. The best thermo-compression conditions tested were 200 °C, 40 MPa pressure for 7.5 min. This resulted in a particleboard with high density (up to 1.63 ± 0.02 g/cm3) and high flexural strength/modulus (up to 32.3 ± 1.8 MPa/6.8 ± 0.2 GPa, respectively), but a low water contact angle of 38.9° ± 3.5°. Thermal analyses revealed the effect of alginates on the mechanical properties of particleboards. This work opens the door to a new way of adding value to Sargassum seaweed, using the whole algae with minimal pre-treatment.

Colloidal and Thermal Stability of Three-Component Hybrid Materials Containing Clay Mineral, Polysaccharide and Surfactant

The paper presents the colloidal and thermal stability of the three-component hybrid materials containing halloysite, polysaccharides (alginic acid, cationic cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose) and Tritons. TX-100, TX-165 and TX-405 were used as non-ionic surfactants. Stability and other properties of the hybrid materials were tested by the following methods: UV-Vis, TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), CHN (elemental analysis), SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and tensiometry. According to the results with the increasing polymer concentration the colloidal stability of the tested systems also increases. Moreover, the addition of the surfactants causes the increase of polysaccharide adsorption but the colloidal stability of the tested systems decreases due to large weights of formed aggregates. As follows from the thermal analysis, the comparison of the TG/DTG-DSC curves obtained for the investigated polymers confirms that their thermal decomposition courses have some common features. The obtained results have the application potential in the formation of the materials for the pollutants removal from water and sewages.

Physicochemical and functional characterization of gelatin edible film incorporated with fucoidan isolated from Sargassum tenerrimum

Biodegradable films were created with fish gelatin and fucoidan extracted from Sargassum tenerrimum using 30% glycerol as a plasticizer. The gelatin films were incorporated with fucoidan (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%), respectively. Results presented that the average thickness of films ranged from 0.12 to 0.147 mm. Tensile strength (TS) was decreased from 29.27 to 3.46 MPa by adding the fucoidan except for the gelatin/fucoidan 10% (5.35 MPa) sample. The results showed that the physical characteristics (the contact angle (Ɵ), water solubility, opacity, and moisture content) of the films significantly changed depending on different fucoidan concentrations. FTIR and SEM analysis confirmed the interaction of fucoidan with gelatin in the composite film. Furthermore, adding 10% fucoidan showed high DPPH radical scavenging activity (65%) than other treatments. Therefore, incorporation of fucoidan extracted from brown algae (Sargassum tenerrimum) with fish gelatin films improved thermal stability, anti-oxidative, and antibacterial characteristics in addition to enhanced mechanical and protective properties, to be used as a bioactive edible film in the food packaging industry.

Fucoidan-based nanoparticles: Preparations and applications

Nanoparticle-based therapy has gained much attention in the pharmaceutical industry. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide naturally derived from marine brown algae and is widely used for medical applications. We explore preparation of fucoidan-based nanoparticles and their biomedical applications in the current review. The fucoidan-based nanoparticles have been synthesized using microwave, emulsion, solvent evaporation, green synthesis, polyelectrolyte self-assembly, precipitation, and ultrasonication methods. The synthesized nanoparticles have particle sizes ranging from 100 to 400 nm. Therefore, fucoidan-based nanoparticles have a variety of potential therapeutic applications, including drug delivery, cancer therapies, tissue engineering, antimicrobial applications, magnetic resonance imaging contrast, and atherothrombosis imaging. For example, fucoidan nanoparticles have been used to deliver curcumin, dextran, gentamicin, epigallocatechin gallate, and cisplatin for cancer therapies. Furthermore, fucoidan nanoparticles coupled with metal nanoparticles have been used to target and recognize clinical conditions for diagnostic purposes. Hence, fucoidan-based nanoparticles have been helpful for biomedical applications.
