Neuron Compatibility and Antioxidant Activity of Barium Titanate and Lithium Niobate Nanoparticles

Simultaneous Second Harmonic Generation and Multiphoton Excited Photoluminescence in Samarium-Doped BaTiO3 Nanoparticles Functionalized with Poly(ethylene glycol)

In this work, samarium-doped BaTiO3 (BT:Sm) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to investigate their optical characteristics and compatibility with biological systems. The structure, particle morphology, optical properties, and biological compatibility of the NPs were assessed. The results demonstrated the formation of BT:Sm and [(BT:Sm)-PEG]. The relative intensities and positions of peaks in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) are consistent with an average crystallite size of ∼75 nm. The Raman spectra showed that Sm doping produced the typical tetragonal peaks at around 306 and 715 cm-1, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the PEGylation process was effective. Also, our investigation demonstrates the potential of these NPs as very temperature-sensitive nanosensors with a resolution exceeding 0.5 °C, which is achievable through optical excitation. We also analyze their emission properties. Finally, we present a study related with the mitochondrial activity of naked and PEG-coated NPs. The results indicate that neither naked nor PEG-coated NPs exhibit changes in mitochondrial metabolism, as indicated by quantitative cell viability and morphological visualization. The PEG-coated NPs prevented the formation of aggregates in cell culture compared to naked NPs, demonstrating the significance of PEG as a stabilizing agent.

Effects of Calcination Temperature on the Synthesis of One-Pot Sol-Gelled Barium Titanate Powder and Its Performance as an Endodontic Radiopacifier

Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO), conventionally used for dielectric and ferroelectric applications, has been assessed for biomedical applications, such as its utilization as a radiopacifier in mineral trioxide aggregates (MTA) for endodontic treatment. In the present study, BTO powders were prepared using the sol-gel process, followed by calcination at 400-1100 °C. The X-ray diffraction technique was then used to examine the as-prepared powders to elucidate the effect of calcination on the phase composition and crystalline size of BTO. Calcined BTO powders were then used as radiopacifiers for MTA. MTA-like cements were investigated to determine the optimal calcination temperature based on the radiopacity and diametral tensile strength (DTS). The experimental results showed that the formation of BTO phase was observed after calcination at temperatures of 600 °C and above. The calcined powders were a mixture of BaTiO3 phase with residual BaCO3 and/or Ba2TiO4 phases. The performance of MTA-like cements with BTO addition increased with increasing calcination temperature up to 1000 °C. The radiopacity, however, decreased after 7 days of simulated oral environmental storage, whereas an increase in DTS was observed. Optimal MTA-like cement was obtained by adding 40 wt.% 1000 °C-calcined BTO powder, with its resulting radiopacity and DTS at 4.83 ± 0.61 mmAl and 2.86 ± 0.33 MPa, respectively. After 7 days, the radiopacity decreased slightly to 4.69 ± 0.51 mmAl, accompanied by an increase in DTS to 3.13 ± 0.70 MPa. The optimal cement was biocompatible and verified using MG 63 and L929 cell lines, which exhibited cell viability higher than 95%.

Biomimetic-inspired piezoelectric ovalbumin/BaTiO3 scaffolds synergizing with anisotropic topology for modulating Schwann cell and DRG behavior

The treatment of peripheral nerve injury is a clinical challenge that tremendously affected the patients' health and life. Anisotropic topographies and electric cues can simulate the regenerative microenvironment of nerve from physical and biological aspects, which show promising application in nerve regeneration. However, most studies just unilaterally emphasize the effect of sole topological- or electric- cue on nerve regeneration, while rarely considering the synergistic function of both cues simultaneously. In this study, a biomimetic-inspired piezoelectric topological ovalbumin/BaTiO3 scaffold that can provide non-invasive electrical stimulation in situ was constructed by combining piezoelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles and surface microtopography. The results showed that the incorporation of piezoelectric nanoparticles could improve the mechanical properties of the scaffolds, and the piezoelectric output of the scaffolds after polarization was significantly increased. Biological evaluation revealed that the piezoelectric topological scaffolds could regulate the orientation growth of SCs, promote axon elongation of DRG, and upregulate the genes expression referring to myelination and axon growth, thus rapidly integrated chemical-mechanical signals and transmitted them for effectively promoting neuronal myelination, which was closely related to peripheral neurogenesis. The study suggests that the anisotropic surface topology combined with non-invasive electronic stimulation of the ovalbumin/BaTiO3 scaffolds possess a promising application prospect in the repair and regeneration of peripheral nerve injury.

Review on electrically conductive smart nerve guide conduit for peripheral nerve regeneration

At present, peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are one of the leading causes of substantial impairment around the globe. Complete recovery of nerve function after an injury is challenging. Currently, autologous nerve grafts are being used as a treatment; however, this has several downsides, for example, donor site morbidity, shortage of donor sites, loss of sensation, inflammation, and neuroma development. The most promising alternative is the development of a nerve guide conduit (NGC) to direct the restoration and renewal of neuronal axons from the proximal to the distal end to facilitate nerve regeneration and maximize sensory and functional recovery. Alternatively, the response of nerve cells to electrical stimulation (ES) has a substantial regenerative effect. The incorporation of electrically conductive biomaterials in the fabrication of smart NGCs facilitates the function of ES throughout the active proliferation state. This article overviews the potency of the various categories of electroactive smart biomaterials, including conductive and piezoelectric nanomaterials, piezoelectric polymers, and organic conductive polymers that researchers have employed latterly to fabricate smart NGCs and their potentiality in future clinical application. It also summarizes a comprehensive analysis of the recent research and advancements in the application of ES in the field of NGC.

Reactive oxygen species for therapeutic application: Role of piezoelectric materials

This perspective article emphasizes the significant role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in in vivo remedial therapy of various diseases and complications, capitalizing on their potential reactivity. Among the various influencers, herein, piezoelectric materials driven ROS generation activity is primarily considered. Intrinsic non-centrosymmetry of piezoelectric materials makes them suitable for distinct dipole formation in the presence of external mechanical stimuli. Such characteristics prompt the positioning of opposite charged carriers to execute associated redox transformations that effectively participate to generate ROS in the aqueous media of the cell cytoplasm, organelles and nucleus. The immense reactivity of piezoelectric material driven ROS is fostered to terminate cellular toxicity or curtail tumor cell growth, due to their higher specificity. This perspective considers the conjugated performance of piezoelectric materials and ultrasound which can remotely generate electrical charges that promote ROS production for therapeutic application. In particular, a substantial synopsis is provided for the remedial activity of numerous piezocatalytic materials in tumor cell apoptosis, antibacterial treatment, dental care and neurological disorders. Subsequently, the report precisely demonstrates the methods involving various spectrophotometric approaches for the analysis of the ROS. Finally, the key challenges of piezoelectric material-based therapy are discussed and systematic future progress is outlined.

Bifunctional MXene-Augmented Retinal Progenitor Cell Transplantation for Retinal Degeneration

Retinal degeneration, characterized by the progressive loss of retinal neurons, is the leading cause of incurable visual impairment. Retinal progenitor cells (RPCs)-based transplantation can facilitate sight restoration, but the clinical efficacy of this process is compromised by the imprecise neurogenic differentiation of RPCs and undermining function of transplanted cells surrounded by severely oxidative retinal lesions. Here, it is shown that ultrathin niobium carbide (Nb2 C) MXene enables performance enhancement of RPCs for retinal regeneration. Nb2 C MXene with moderate photothermal effect markedly improves retinal neuronal differentiation of RPCs by activating intracellular signaling, in addition to the highly effective RPC protection by scavenging free radicals concurrently, which has been solidly evidenced by the comprehensive biomedical assessments and theoretical calculations. A dramatically increased neuronal differentiation is observed upon subretinal transplantation of MXene-assisted RPCs into the typical retinal degeneration 10 (rd10) mice, thereby contributing to the efficient restoration of retinal architecture and visual function. The dual-intrinsic function of MXene synergistically aids RPC transplantation, which represents an intriguing paradigm in vision-restoration research filed, and will broaden the multifunctionality horizon of nanomedicine.

Multifunctional Spirogyra-hyalina-Mediated Barium Oxide Nanoparticles (BaONPs): Synthesis and Applications

This research aims to biosynthesize Barium oxide nanoparticles (BaONPs) for biomedical applications, using Spirogyra hyalina as a stabilizing and reducing agent. UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to physiochemically characterize the barium oxide nanoparticles, while antibacterial, minimum inhibitory concentration, antifungal, free radicle scavenging, and anti-inflammatory assay were performed to assess the therapeutic potential of the synthesized BaONPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed bands at 615 and 692 cm-1 that corresponded to the formation of BaONPs. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the spherical and flower-shaped morphology of BaONPs having an average diameter of 64.01 ± 2.0 nm. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial growth was halted by the barium nanoparticles, demonstrating their efficacy up to 19.12 ± 0.31 mm against E. coli, 18.83 ± 0.44 mm against Klebsiella pneumoniae, 17.31 ± 0.59 mm against P. aeruginosa, 16.56 ± 0.37 mm against S. aureus, and 15.75 ± 0.38 mm against S. epidermidis, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 9.0, 6.3, 5.5, 4.5, and 2.0 µg/mL for S. aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, S. epidermidis, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli, respectively. BaONPs were not that effective against fungal strains such as Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium solani, and Fusarium proliferatum. The BaONPs exhibited potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity through inhibiting cyclooxygenases type 1 (43.12 ± 1.21%) and 2 (41.23 ± 1.56%), and DPPH free radicles up to 43.52 ± 0.29% at 400 µg/mL. In conclusion, the biomolecules derived from Spirogyra hyalina have demonstrated remarkable ability to generate stable nanoparticles, offering promising prospects for their utilization as therapeutic agents and coating materials in various biomedical applications.

A Comprehensive Review on Barium Titanate Nanoparticles as a Persuasive Piezoelectric Material for Biomedical Applications: Prospects and Challenges

Stimulation of cells with electrical cues is an imperative approach to interact with biological systems and has been exploited in clinical practices over a wide range of pathological ailments. This bioelectric interface has been extensively explored with the help of piezoelectric materials, leading to remarkable advancement in the past two decades. Among other members of this fraternity, colloidal perovskite barium titanate (BaTiO₃ ) has gained substantial interest due to its noteworthy properties which includes high dielectric constant and excellent ferroelectric properties along with acceptable biocompatibility. Significant progression is witnessed for BaTiO₃ nanoparticles (BaTiO₃ NPs) as potent candidates for biomedical applications and in wearable bioelectronics, making them a promising personal healthcare platform. The current review highlights the nanostructured piezoelectric bio interface of BaTiO₃ NPs in applications comprising drug delivery, tissue engineering, bioimaging, bioelectronics, and wearable devices. Particular attention has been dedicated toward the fabrication routes of BaTiO₃ NPs along with different approaches for its surface modifications. This review offers a comprehensive discussion on the utility of BaTiO₃ NPs as active devices rather than passive structural unit behaving as carriers for biomolecules. The employment of BaTiO₃ NPs presents new scenarios and opportunity in the vast field of nanomedicines for biomedical applications.

Multi-Parametric Exploration of a Selection of Piezoceramic Materials for Bone Graft Substitute Applications

This work was devoted to the first multi-parametric unitary comparative analysis of a selection of sintered piezoceramic materials synthesised by solid-state reactions, aiming to delineate the most promising biocompatible piezoelectric material, to be further implemented into macro-porous ceramic scaffolds fabricated by 3D printing technologies. The piezoceramics under scrutiny were: KNbO₃, LiNbO₃, LiTaO₃, BaTiO₃, Zr-doped BaTiO₃, and the (Ba_0.85Ca_0.15)(Ti_0.9Zr_0.1)O₃ solid solution (BCTZ). The XRD analysis revealed the high crystallinity of all sintered ceramics, while the best densification was achieved for the BaTiO₃-based materials via conventional sintering. Conjunctively, BCTZ yielded the best combination of functional properties-piezoelectric response (in terms of longitudinal piezoelectric constant and planar electromechanical coupling factor) and mechanical and in vitro osteoblast cell compatibility. The selected piezoceramic was further used as a base material for the robocasting fabrication of 3D macro-porous scaffolds (porosity of ~50%), which yielded a promising compressive strength of ~20 MPa (higher than that of trabecular bone), excellent cell colonization capability, and noteworthy cytocompatibility in osteoblast cell cultures, analogous to the biological control. Thereby, good prospects for the possible development of a new generation of synthetic bone graft substitutes endowed with the piezoelectric effect as a stimulus for the enhancement of osteogenic capacity were settled.

Nanomaterials for Inner Ear Diseases: Challenges, Limitations and Opportunities

The inner ear is located deep in the temporal bone and has a complex anatomy. It is difficult to observe and obtain pathological tissues directly. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of inner ear diseases have always been a major clinical problem. The onset of inner ear disease can be accompanied by symptoms such as hearing loss, dizziness and tinnitus, which seriously affect people’s lives. Nanoparticles have the characteristics of small size, high bioavailability and strong plasticity. With the development of related research on nanoparticles in inner ear diseases, nanoparticles have gradually become a research hotspot in inner ear diseases. This review briefly summarizes the research progress, opportunities and challenges of the application of nanoparticles in inner ear diseases.
