Abstract
Docynia delavayi is an economically significant fruit species with a high market potential due to the special aroma of its fruit. Here, a 653.34 Mb high-quality genome of D. delavayi was first reported, of which 93.8 % of the sequences (612.98 Mb) could be anchored to 17 chromosomes, containing 48,325 protein-coding genes. Ks analysis proved that two whole genome duplication (WGD) events occurred in D. delavayi, resulting in the expansion of genes associated with terpene biosynthesis, which promoted its fruit-specific aroma production. Combined multi-omics analysis, α-farnesene was detected as the most abundant aroma substance emitted by D. delavayi fruit during storage, meanwhile one α-farnesene synthase gene (AFS) and 15 transcription factors (TFs) were identified as the candidate genes potentially involved in α-farnesene biosynthesis. Further studies for the regulation network of α-farnesene biosynthesis revealed that DdebHLH, DdeERF1 and DdeMYB could activate the transcription of DdeAFS. To our knowledge, it is the first report that MYB TF plays a regulatory role in α-farnesene biosynthesis, which will greatly facilitate future breeding programs for D. delavayi.

Abstract
Pepper is an economically important vegetable worldwide, containing various specialized metabolites crucial for its development and flavor. Capsaicinoids, especially, are genus-specialized metabolites that confer a spicy flavor to Capsicum fruits. In this work, two pepper cultivars, YB (Capsicum frutescens L.) and JC (Capsicum baccatum L.) pepper, showed distinct differences in the accumulation of capsaicin and flavonoid. However, the molecular mechanism underlying them was still unclear. Metabolome analysis showed that the JC pepper induced a more abundant accumulation of metabolites associated with alkaloids, flavonoids, and capsaicinoids in the red ripening stages, leading to a spicier flavor in the JC pepper. Transcriptome analysis confirmed that the increased expression of transcripts associated with phenylpropanoid and flavonoid metabolic pathways occurred in the JC pepper. Integrative analysis of metabolome and transcriptome suggested that four structural genes, 4CL7, 4CL6, CHS, and COMT, were responsible for the higher accumulation of metabolites relevant to capsaicin and flavonoids. Through weighted gene co-expression network analyses, modules related to flavonoid biosynthesis and potential regulators for candidate genes were identified. The promoter analysis of four candidate genes showed they contained several cis-elements that were bonded to MYB, bZIP, and WRKY transcription factors. Further RT-qPCR examination verified three transcription factors, MYB, bZIP53, and WRKY25, that exhibited increased expression in the red ripening stage of the JC pepper compared to YB, which potentially regulated their expression. Altogether, our findings provide comprehensive understanding and valuable information for pepper breeding programs in the future.

Abstract
Terpene aroma compounds are key quality attributes of postharvest Torreya grandis nuts, contributing to their commercial value. However, terpene biosynthesis and regulatory networks in different T. grandis cvs. are still poorly understood. Here, chief cvs. 'Xi Fei' and 'Xiangya Fei' were investigated for their differences in terpene biosynthesis and gene expression levels during postharvest ripening using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and transcriptomic datasets. A total of 28 and 22 aroma compounds were identified in 'Xi Fei' and 'Xiangya Fei', respectively. Interestingly, differences in aroma composition between the two cvs. were mostly attributed to D-limonene and α-pinene levels as key determinants in Torreya nuts' flavor. Further, transcriptome profiling, correlation analysis, and RT-qPCR annotated two novel genes, TgTPS1 in 'Xi Fei' and TgTPS2 in 'Xiangya Fei', involved in terpene biosynthesis. In addition, six transcription factors (TFs) with comparable expression patterns to TgTPS1 and four TFs to TgTPS2 were identified via correlation analysis of a volatile and transcriptome dataset to be involved in terpene biosynthesis. Our study provides novel insight into terpene biosynthesis and its regulation at the molecular level in T. grandis nut and presents a valuable reference for metabolic engineering and aroma improvement in this less explored nut.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cinnamomum cassia Presl, classified in the Lauraceae family, is widely used as a spice, but also in medicine, cosmetics, and food. Aroma is an important factor affecting the medicinal and flavoring properties of C. cassia, and is mainly determined by volatile organic compounds (VOCs); however, little is known about the composition of aromatic VOCs in C. cassia and their potential molecular regulatory mechanisms. Here, integrated transcriptomic and volatile metabolomic analyses were employed to provide insights into the formation regularity of aromatic VOCs in C. cassia bark at five different harvesting times. RESULTS The bark thickness and volatile oil content were significantly increased along with the development of the bark. A total of 724 differentially accumulated volatiles (DAVs) were identified in the bark samples, most of which were terpenoids. Venn analysis of the top 100 VOCs in each period showed that twenty-eight aromatic VOCs were significantly accumulated in different harvesting times. The most abundant VOC, cinnamaldehyde, peaked at 120 months after planting (MAP) and dominated the aroma qualities. Five terpenoids, α-copaene, β-bourbonene, α-cubebene, α-funebrene, and δ-cadinene, that peaked at 240 MAP could also be important in creating C. cassia's characteristic aroma. A list of 43,412 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in the biosynthetic pathways of aromatic VOCs were identified, including phenylpropanoids, mevalonic acid (MVA) and methylerythritol phosphate (MEP). A gene-metabolite regulatory network for terpenoid and phenylpropanoid metabolism was constructed to show the key candidate structural genes and transcription factors involved in the biosynthesis of terpenoids and phenylpropanoids. CONCLUSIONS The results of our research revealed the composition and changes of aromatic VOCs in C. cassia bark at different harvesting stages, differentiated the characteristic aroma components of cinnamon, and illuminated the molecular mechanism of aroma formation. These foundational results will provide technical guidance for the quality breeding of C. cassia.

Abstract
Introduction: Aroma is a key inherent quality attributes of pepper fruit, yet the underlying mechanisms of aroma compound biosynthesis remain unclear. Methods: In this study, the volatile profile of the QH (cultivated Capsicum chinense) and WH (cultivated Capsicum annuum) pepper varieties were putatively identified during fruit development using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results and discussion: The results identified 203 volatiles in pepper, and most of the esters, terpenes, aldehydes and alcohols were significantly down-regulated with fruit ripening. The comparison of volatile components between varieties revealed that aldehydes and alcohols were highly expressed in the WH fruit, while esters and terpenes with fruity or floral aroma were generally highly accumulated in the QH fruit, providing QH with a fruity odor. Transcriptome analysis demonstrated the close relationship between the synthesis of volatiles and the fatty acid and terpene metabolic pathways, and the high expression of the ADH, AAT and TPS genes was key in determining the accumulation of volatiles in pepper fruit. Furthermore, integrative metabolome and transcriptome analysis revealed that 208 differentially expressed genes were highly correlated with 114 volatiles, and the transcription factors of bHLH, MYB, ARF and IAA were identified as fundamental for the regulation of volatile synthesis in pepper fruit. Our results extend the understanding of the synthesis and accumulation of volatiles in pepper fruit.
