Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiorespiratory function is one of the key health indicators that promote good health. Knowing the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and cardiorespiratory functioning might assist in the creation of evidence-based therapies that focus on addressing difficulties associated with obesity. OBJECTIVE To assess the correlation between BMI and cardiorespiratory functions among medical students at Northern Border University. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students at Northern Border University, Saudi Arabia. The blood pressure (BP), respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), and BMI of the students were measured. RESULTS The mean age of the students was 17.1 ± 1.9 years. Nearly 40% of students were overweight or obese. Our study revealed a significant positive correlation between BMI and BP, RR, tidal volume (TV), and MAP. CONCLUSIONS The correlation analysis of our study revealed a significant positive correlation of BMI with BP, RR, TV, and MAP.

Abstract
Obesity and arterial stiffness are important risk factors for disease development. However, the relationship between obesity and arterial stiffness remains unclear. We examined the relationship of visceral fat area (VFA) and anthropometric obesity indices with arterial stiffness. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 2 789 participants (50% women) who underwent both VFA and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measurements during health checkups. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), and body roundness index (BRI) were assessed. Visceral fat area was quantified using abdominal computed tomography. In women, VFA and all anthropometric indices positively correlated with age. In men, VFA, WHtR, ABSI, and BRI positively correlated with age; BMI inversely correlated with age; and WC did not correlate with age. Visceral fat area significantly correlated with anthropometric indices, but its correlation with ABSI was modest. In women, baPWV showed modest correlations with VFA and anthropometric indices and little correlations with BMI. In men, baPWV modestly correlated with VFA, WHtR, ABSI, and BRI, but inversely correlated with BMI and did not significantly correlate with WC. The multivariable-adjusted model showed that VFA and anthropometric indices, except ABSI, were inversely associated with baPWV; however, they were positively associated with metabolic syndrome components, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia. A body-shaped index weakly associated positively with baPWV, but misclassified individuals at risk for metabolic syndrome components. Visceral fat area and most anthropometric obesity indices were positively associated with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, but inversely associated with baPWV. Visceral fat area and anthropometric indices, except a body-shaped index, were inversely associated with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity but positively associated with metabolic syndrome components, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to analyze associations between body mass index (BMI) and vascular measurements (brachial ankle pulse wave velocity [baPWV] and ankle-brachial index [ABI]), whether blood pressure (BP) was involved in the relationship, and implications for nursing. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 1,894 middle-aged and older adults who underwent routine health screening at a community medical center in the Zhangjiang community in Shanghai, China. Participants were divided into three groups based on BMI: normal weight (n = 1,202), overweight (n = 480), and obese (n = 212). Multivariate linear regression models and smooth curve fittings were used to evaluate the associations between BMI and indices of vascular stiffness. Mediation analysis examined whether blood pressure mediate the association between BMI and vascular stiffness. Results Multiple linear regression analysis showed that BMI to be significantly and negatively associated with baPWV (β = -0.06 [-0.10, -0.03]) and ABI (β = -0.004 [-0.005, -0.003]), respectively. The interaction test results of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the relationship between BMI and baPWV were significant (P for interaction = 0.01). After adjusting for age and sex, mediation analyses showed that BMI and baPWV were correlated (β = 0.090, P < 0.001) and mediated by SBP (β = 0.533, P < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (β = 0.338, P < 0.001). A negative association was found between BMI and ABI (β = -0.135, P < 0.001), which appeared to be partially mediated by SBP (β = 0.124, P < 0.001) and DBP (β = 0.053, P < 0.001). Additional subgroup analysis based on blood pressure levels did not revealed statistically significant mediating effects. Conclusions Our findings showed conflicting associations between BMI and non-invasive vascular measurements of arterial stiffness. BP may have a biological interaction in the relationship between BMI and baPWV. Managing blood pressure and weight through comprehensive clinical care is crucial for preventing stiffness or blockage of vessels in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
Obesity and overweight are closely related to cardiovascular mortality. Arterial stiffness is one of the important risks for cardiovascular diseases and is strongly related with the cardiovascular mortality. However, the relationship between obesity and arterial stiffness is still controversial. A cross-sectional study was performed to examine the relationship of body fat percentage (BFP), an indicator of obesity, with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) in 2603 subjects (aged 58.62 ± 11.27 years, male 71.07%, hypertension 64.89%). All participants were divided into four groups according to the gender and the presence of arterial stiffening based on a value ≥10 m/s of cfPWV(group1 : male with cfPWV <10 m/s, group2 : male with cfPWV ≥10 m/s, group3 : female with cfPWV <10 m/s, group4 : female with cfPWV ≥10 m/s). Body weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure were measured and clinical biochemical tests were recorded. cfPWV was measured using a non-invasive automatic device (Complior Analysis, France). BFP were calculated by CUN-BAE equation. The level of cfPWV was significantly increased with the increasing trend of BFP in both males and females. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that SBP, DBP, HR, Hcy, BFP, FPG were independent associated with cfPWV in females and SBP, eGFR, FPG, BFP, DBP were independent associated with cfPWV in males. In the subgroups stratified by age, BFP was correlated with cfPWV only in females over 60 years old, but not in female those aged under 60 years old and males. In addition to the age and blood pressure, BFP was one of important predictor of arterial stiffening special in females aged over 60 years old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim is to observe whether body composition in patients with high-risk obesity (body mass index >35 or between 30 and 34.9kg/m2 with a waist circumference greater than 102cm in men or greater than 88cm in women) is related with vascular disease. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of patients with high-risk obesity. Their fat mass was measured through bioimpedance and arterial stiffness through pulse wave velocity (PWV). Tertiles of patients were analyzed according to PWV distribution. RESULTS A total of 59 patients were analyzed. As PWV increased, BMI (p=0.02) and fat mass content (p<0.00) increased. There was also a significant increase in inflammation indicators. CONCLUSIONS In patients with high-risk obesity, there were differences in their body composition which were associated with changes in arterial stiffness and inflammatory burden.

Abstract
Background Metabolic dysfunction is known to be associated with arterial stiffness. However, the risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes due to arterial stiffness and the potential mechanism remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of arterial stiffness with the risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and determine whether this association is mediated by liver fat. Methods A prospective study was conducted with 4,139 Chinese adults who were metabolically healthy at baseline. Arterial stiffness was measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Obesity was defined as body mass index ≥25 kg/m2. The primary outcomes were incident metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Results During a median follow-up of 4.4 years, 1,022 (24.7%) and 354 (9.5%) participants developed metabolic syndrome and diabetes, respectively. Compared with those in the lowest quartile of baPWV, participants in the highest quartile had 85 and 91% higher risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes [risk ratio (RR) 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.41, 2.42 for metabolic syndrome; RR 1.91, 95% CI 1.16, 3.15 for diabetes]. Mediation analyses indicated that fatty liver significantly mediated the association of arterial stiffness with metabolic syndrome and diabetes risk. Specifically, 18.4% of metabolic syndrome and 12.6% of diabetes risk due to arterial stiffness were mediated through fatty liver. Conclusions Arterial stiffness was associated with higher risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in individuals with obesity. This association may be partially mediated by fatty liver.
