Study of Hyperbranched Poly(ethyleneimine) Polymers of Different Molecular Weight and Their Interaction with Epoxy Resin

Direct synthesis of partially ethoxylated branched polyethylenimine from ethanolamine

We report here a method to make a branched and partially ethoxylated polyethyleneimine derivative directly from ethanolamine. The polymerization reaction is catalysed by a pincer complex of Earth-abundant metal, manganese, and produces water as the only byproduct. Industrial processes to produce polyethyleneimines involve the transformation of ethanolamine to a highly toxic chemical, aziridine, by an energy-intensive/waste-generating process followed by the ring-opening polymerization of aziridine. The reported method bypasses the need to produce a highly toxic intermediate and presents advantages over the current state-of-the-art. We propose that the polymerization process follows a hydrogen borrowing pathway that involves (a) dehydrogenation of ethanolamine to form 2-aminoacetaldehyde, (b) dehydrative coupling of 2-aminoacetaldehyde with ethanolamine to form an imine derivative, and (c) subsequent hydrogenation of imine derivative to form alkylated amines.

Dielectric Analysis of Blended Polysulfone/Polyethylenimine Membrane Contactors for CO2 Capture

Polysulfone membranes, used as contactors for CO2 capture, are blended with two different hyperbranched polyethyleneimines modified with benzoyl chloride (Additive 1) and phenyl isocyanate (Additive 2) in different percentages. Fourier-transformed infrared spectra evidence the presence of urea and amide groups, whereas the field emission scanning electron microscopy images show differences in the microstructure of the blended membranes. Dielectric spectra determine the motions of the side and backbone chains, which can facilitate the diffusion of CO2 . The spectra consist of six dielectric processes; three of them are due to the polysulfone (γPSf , βPSf , and αPSf ), whereas the rest are characteristic of the additive (γHPEI , βHPEI , and αHPEI ). The benzoyl chloride and phenyl isocyanate functional groups introduce variations in molecular mobility and modify the relaxations associated with the hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI). The additives also increase the conductivity of the blended membranes, which can compromise the performance of the membranes, specifically in the case of Additive 1. Ion hopping is found to be the prevailing charge transport mechanism while both relaxations, αHPEI and αPSf , are actives. These results, together with the final morphology of the membranes, may explain the greater absorption capacity of the membranes prepared with the hyperbranched polyethyleneimine modified with Additive 2.

Hydroxyapatite-Based Coatings on Silicon Wafers and Printed Zirconia

Dental surgery needs a biocompatible implant design that can ensure both osseointegration and soft tissue integration. This study aims to investigate the behavior of a hydroxyapatite-based coating, specifically designed to be deposited onto a zirconia substrate that was intentionally made porous through additive manufacturing for the purpose of reducing the cost of material. Layers were made via sol-gel dip coating by immersing the porous substrates into solutions of hydroxyapatite that were mixed with polyethyleneimine to improve the adhesion of hydroxyapatite to the substrate. The microstructure was determined by using X-ray diffraction, which showed the adhesion of hydroxyapatite; and atomic force microscopy was used to highlight the homogeneity of the coating repartition. Thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed successful, selective removal of the polymer and a preserved hydroxyapatite coating. Finally, scanning electron microscopy pictures of the printed zirconia ceramics, which were obtained through the digital light processing additive manufacturing method, revealed that the mixed coating leads to a thicker, more uniform layer in comparison with a pure hydroxyapatite coating. Therefore, homogeneous coatings can be added to porous zirconia by combining polyethyleneimine with hydroxyapatite. This result has implications for improving global access to dental care.

Multilayer gold nanoparticles as non-viral vectors for targeting MCF-7 cancer cells

Cargocomplexes play a vital role in non-viral delivery methods due to their capacity to target certain cells (or cells through the cell-division cycle) and inject their (macro)molecular "cargo" into them. The development of gene carriers that can efficiently transport and deliver genetic material into human-targeted cells with minimal toxicity is an important challenge in the field. The present study reports the straightforward preparation and testing of a modular non-viral gene carrier based on AuNPs. The design, synthesis, and in vitro evaluation of multilayer gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as non-viral gene carriers with high transfection efficiency, reduced cytotoxicity for targeted therapeutic delivery of nucleic acids to MCF-7 cancer cells are presented. The developed non-viral vector is based on supramolecular "host-guest" inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin, positioned on the AuNPs surface over a layer of polyethyleneimine, and adamantyl moiety from polyethylene glycol conjugated decapeptide (WXEAAYQRFL). First, the β-CD functionalized PEI was utilized as the template for the synthesis of AuNPs of controlled sizes. The reaction produced small AuNPs with a cationic layer which is known for efficient condensation of genetic material and β-CD suitable for the decoration of the carrier with targeting moieties using "host-guest" inclusion complexation. Subsequently, adamantine-polyethylene glycol conjugated decapeptide was attached to the AuNPs. The in vitro results have validated the ability of the proposed systems to selectively target tumor cells with high efficacy and low toxicity due to the unique affinity of the aptamer-functionalized nanoparticles toward breast cancer cells. The findings of this work demonstrated that the proposed modular system may represent a very promising platform for the AuNP-based non-viral vectors mainly due to the versatility of the system, which allows for the facile exchange of several types of ligands for improving the targeting properties and transfection efficiency, or for providing better protection from the endocytotic systems.

Direct Comparison of Three Buckling-Based Methods to Measure the Elastic Modulus of Nanobiocomposite Thin Films

To engineer tunable thin-film materials, the accurate measurement of their mechanical properties is crucial. However, characterizing the elastic modulus with current methods is particularly challenging for sub-micrometer thick films and hygroscopic materials because they are highly sensitive to environmental conditions and most methods require free-standing films which are difficult to prepare. In this work, we directly compared three buckling-based methods to determine the elastic moduli of supported thin films: (1) biaxial thermal shrinking, (2) uniaxial thermal shrinking, and (3) the mechanically compressed, strain-induced elastic buckling instability for mechanical measurements (SIEBIMM) method. Nanobiocomposite model films composed of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were assembled using layer-by-layer deposition to control composition and thickness. The three buckling-based methods yielded the same trends and comparable values for the elastic moduli of each CNC-PEI film composition (ranging from 15 to 44 GPa, depending on film composition). This suggests that the methods are similarly effective for the quantification of thin-film mechanical properties. Increasing the CNC content in the films statistically increased the modulus; however, increasing the PEI content did not lead to significant changes. For the CNC-PEI system, the standard deviation of elastic moduli determined from SIEBIMM was 2-4 times larger than that for thermal shrinking, likely due to extensive cracking due to the different stress applied to the film when subjected to compression of a relaxed substrate versus the shrinking of a pre-strained substrate. These results show that biaxial thermal shrinking is a reliable method for the determination of the mechanical properties of thin films with a simple implementation and analysis and low sensitivity to small deviations in the input parameter values, such as film thickness or substrate modulus.

Irgacure 2959-functionalized poly(ethyleneimine)s as improved photoinitiators: enhanced water solubility, migration stability and visible-light operation

I2959-functionalized PEI based PPIs with 7–9 times higher water solubility than I2959, visible light activation, dual-curing properties and migration stability were synthesized.

Hyperbranched polymeric nanomaterials impair the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna

Hyperbranched polymers are nanomaterials belonging to the class of dendritic architectures with increasing applications in many diverse fields. We studied the toxicity of two hyperbranched polymers to the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna. A hyperbranched hydroxyl-terminated polyester and a commercial hyperbranched polyamidoamine, Helux-3316 were tested for the acute immobilization of daphnids, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species and the activity of the antioxidant enzymes catalase and glutathione S-transferase. The effect for D. magna immobilization was higher for the hyperbranched polyamidoamine Helux-3316, which was attributed to the presence of primary amino groups on its surface. Following exposure to both hyperbranched polymers, a clear overproduction of reactive oxygen species took place accompanied by concentration-dependent enzymatic antioxidant response. Our results showed that the overproduction of reactive oxygen species activated antioxidant defence mechanisms and was responsible for the immobilization of daphnids exposed to both hyperbranched polymers. We showed evidence of the uptake of fluorescently labelled Helux-3316 that accumulated into the gastrointestinal tract of D. magna, and its removal via excretion within fecal pellets. This is the first work reporting the internalization of hyperbranched polymers in aquatic organisms.
