Biomass-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Aerogel Counter Electrodes for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

Recent progress in organic waste recycling materials for solar cell applications

Organic waste-derived solar cells (OWSC) are a classification of third-generation photovoltaic cells in which one or more constituents are fabricated from organic waste material. They are an inspirational complement to the conventional third-generation solar cell with the potential of revolutionizing our future approach to solar cell manufacture. This article provides a study and summary of solar cells that fall under the category of OWSC. OWSC own their merit to low cost of manufacturing and environmental friendliness. This review article reveals different organic waste raw materials, preparation-to-assembly methodologies, and novel approaches to solar cell manufacturing. Ideas for the optimization of the performance of OWSC are presented. The assembly configurations and photovoltaic parameters of reported OWSC are compared in detail. An overview of the trends in the research regarding OWSC in the past decade is given. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of the different solar cell technologies are discussed, and possible trends are proposed. Industrial organic waste raw materials such as paper, coal, and plastics are among the least explored and yet most attractive for solar cell fabrication. The power conversion efficiencies for the cited works are mentioned while emphasizing the products and functions of the organic waste raw materials used.

Sodium Alginate-Based Carbon Aerogel-Supported ZIF-8-Derived Porous Carbon as an Effective Adsorbent for Methane Gas

Adsorption natural gas (ANG) is a technology in which natural gas is stored on the surface of porous materials at relatively low pressures, which are promising candidates for adsorption of natural gas. Adsorbent materials with a large surface area and porous structure plays a significant role in the ANG technology, which holds promise in increasing the storage density for natural gas while decreasing the operating pressure. Here, we demonstrate a facile synthetic method for rational construction of a sodium alginate (SA)/ZIF-8 composite carbon aerogel (AZSCA) by incorporating ZIF-8 particles into SA aerogel through a directional freeze-drying method followed by the carbonization process. The structure characterization shows that AZSCA has a hierarchical porous structure, in which the micropores originated from MOF while the mesopores are derived from the three-dimensional network of the aerogel. The experimental results show that AZSCA achieved high methane adsorption of 181 cm³·g^-1 at 65 bar and 298 K, along with higher isosteric heat of adsorption (Q_st) throughout the adsorption range. Thus, the combination of MOF powders with aerogel can find potential applications in other gas adsorption.

Natural resources for dye-sensitized solar cells

While the development of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been ongoing for more than 30 years, the currently obtained efficiency is unsatisfactory. However, the study of DSSC development has produced a fundamental understanding of cell performance and inspired other devices, such as perovskite cell solar cells. DSSCs consist of a dye-sensitized photoanode, a counter electrode, and a redox couple in the electrolyte system. Each of the components has an important role and cofunctions with each other to obtain a high power conversion efficiency. Various modifications to each DSSC component have been applied to improve their performance. Additionally, to generate improvements, the effort to reduce production costs has been crucial. The utilization of natural sources for DSSC components is a possible solution to this issue. The utilization of natural resources also aims to increase the value of the natural resource itself. In this review, the applications of various natural sources for DSSC components are described, as well as the modification efforts that have been made to enhance their performance. The discussion covers the utilization of natural dye for sensitizer dyes in liquid DSSC applications: (1) utilization of biopolymers for quasi-solid DSSC electrolytes, (2) green synthesis methods for photoanode semiconductors, and (3) development of natural carbon counter electrodes. The detailed factors that influence improvements in cell performance are also addressed.

Advances and Challenges of Fluorescent Nanomaterials for Synthesis and Biomedical Applications

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, new types of fluorescent nanomaterials (FNMs) have been springing up in the past two decades. The nanometer scale endows FNMs with unique optical properties which play a critical role in their applications in bioimaging and fluorescence-dependent detections. However, since low selectivity as well as low photoluminescence efficiency of fluorescent nanomaterials hinders their applications in imaging and detection to some extent, scientists are still in search of synthesizing new FNMs with better properties. In this review, a variety of fluorescent nanoparticles are summarized including semiconductor quantum dots, carbon dots, carbon nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene-based nanomaterials, noble metal nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles, phosphors and organic frameworks. We highlight the recent advances of the latest developments in the synthesis of FNMs and their applications in the biomedical field in recent years. Furthermore, the main theories, methods, and limitations of the synthesis and applications of FNMs have been reviewed and discussed. In addition, challenges in synthesis and biomedical applications are systematically summarized as well. The future directions and perspectives of FNMs in clinical applications are also presented.

Energy Harvesting/Storage and Environmental Remediation via Hot Drinks Wastes

Providing energy and materials are considered one most important issue in the world. Produce and storage energy and also, prepare chemical substances from disposable biomass materials have been widely developed in recent decades to decrease environmental pollutions and production costs. The waste of hot drinks including coffee wastes and tea wastes have considerable potentials to provide energy and different chemical substances. Also, hazardous materials (especially aqueous ions) can be absorbed via hot drinks wastes to protect the environment against perilous pollutants. The low-cost and benign hot drinks wastes including tea wastes and coffee grounds and also the pyrolyzed of them as the hot drinks waste biochar materials have been widely used to produce and store green energies and also, absorb hazardous materials. Production and storage energy and environmental remediation in these sustainable procedures not only reduce the cost of energy but also protect the environment.

The Eco-Friendly Biochar and Valuable Bio-Oil from Caragana korshinskii: Pyrolysis Preparation, Characterization, and Adsorption Applications

Carbonization of biomass can prepare carbon materials with excellent properties. In order to explore the comprehensive utilization and recycling of Caragana korshinskii biomass, 15 kinds of Caragana korshinskii biochar (CB) were prepared by controlling the oxygen-limited pyrolysis process. Moreover, we pay attention to the dynamic changes of microstructure of CB and the by-products. The physicochemical properties of CB were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), BET-specific surface area (BET-SSA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimal preparation technology was evaluated by batch adsorption application experiment of NO3-, and the pyrolysis mechanism was explored. The results showed that the pyrolysis temperature is the most important factor in the properties of CB. With the increase of temperature, the content of C, pH, mesoporous structure, BET-SSA of CB increased, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) decreased and then increased, but the yield and the content of O and N decreased. The CEC, pH, and BET-SSA of CB under each pyrolysis process were 16.64-81.4 cmol·kg-1, 6.65-8.99, and 13.52-133.49 m2·g-1, respectively. CB contains abundant functional groups and mesoporous structure. As the pyrolysis temperature and time increases, the bond valence structure of C 1s, Ca 2p, and O 1s is more stable, and the phase structure of CaCO3 is more obvious, where the aromaticity increases, and the polarity decreases. The CB prepared at 650 °C for 3 h presented the best adsorption performance, and the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity for NO3- reached 120.65 mg·g-1. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model can well describe the isothermal and kinetics adsorption process of NO3-, respectively. Compared with other cellulose and lignin-based biomass materials, CB showed efficient adsorption performance of NO3- without complicated modification condition. The by-products contain bio-soil and tail gas, which are potential source of liquid fuel and chemical raw materials. Especially, the bio-oil of CB contains α-d-glucopyranose, which can be used in medical tests and medicines.

Effect of An Image Resolution Change on the Effective Transport Coefficient of Heterogeneous Materials

Electrochemical electrodes comprise multiple phenomena at different scales. Several works have tried to model such phenomena using statistical techniques. This paper proposes a novel process to work with reduced size images to reconstruct microstructures with the Simulated Annealing method. Later, using the Finite Volume Method, it is verified the effect of the image resolution on the effective transport coefficient (ETC). The method can be applied to synthetic images or images from the Scanning Electron Microscope. The first stage consists of obtaining the image of minimum size, which contains at least 98% of the statistical information of the original image, allowing an equivalent statistical study. The image size reduction was made by applying an iterative decimation over the image using the normalized coarseness to compare the amount of information contained at each step. Representative improvements, especially in processing time, are achieved by reducing the size of the reconstructed microstructures without affecting their statistical behavior. The process ends computing the conduction efficiency from the microstructures. The simulation results, obtained from two kinds of images from different materials, demonstrate the effectivity of the proposed approach. It is important to remark that the controlled decimation allows a reduction of the processor and memory use during the reconstruction and ETC computation of electrodes.
