Functional Chitosan Derivative and Chitin as Decolorization Materials for Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange from Aqueous Solution

Removal of cationic dye pollutants from wastewater with HS loaded semi-IPN composites: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

In this study, methylene blue (MB) pollutant in water was removed using produced hazelnut shell loaded semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (HS loaded semi-IPN) adsorbent. The physical and chemical characterizations of the adsorbents were investigated using TGA, DSC, FT-IR, BET, FE-SEM, and EDX. Experimental parameters such as temperature, swelling, dye concentration, contact time, pH solution, and adsorbent dosage for MB adsorption were thoroughly investigated. It was determined that the HS loaded semi-IPN adsorbent removed 92.1% of MB dye. Subsequently, the adsorption properties between the adsorbent and dye were investigated in detail using several different kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic models. As a result of the obtained data, the interaction between adsorbent and dye molecules is discussed. Moreover, studies on the industrial usability of the adsorbent have been carried out, and it has been observed that the adsorbent can be employed even after four cycles.

Optimization, Kinetics, and Isotherm Studies of Methyl Thioninium Chloride Removal from Simulated Solutions Using Chitosan Derivatives

Methylene blue (MB) dye or methyl thioninium chloride is one of the hazardous cationic dyes that are discharged into the textile effluent causing a highly negative environmental impact. The present work targets the investigation of the adsorption performance of some chitosan-modified products toward the MB dye from simulated solutions. The claimed chitosan derivatives were prepared, characterized, and applied for the removal of lead and copper cations from an aqueous medium in a previous work. These include: N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (N,O-CM/Cs), chitosan grafted with glutaraldehyde (Cs/GA), chitosan cross-linked with GA/epichlorohydrin (Cs/GA/ECH), and chitosan cross-linked with glutaraldehyde/methylene bis(acrylamide) (Cs/GA/MBA). The modified chitosan derivatives in this study displayed outstanding mechanical qualities, exceptional reusability, and a significant amount of adsorption capacity. The ability of prepared Cs derivatives to eradicate MB was as follows: N,O-CM/Cs (95.1 mg/g) < Cs/GA (120.1 mg/g) < Cs/GA/ECH (220.1 mg/g) < Cs/GA/MBA (270.0 mg/g). The swelling performance of the prepared sorbents was verified under different experimental conditions, and the data revealed that the maximum swelling was attained at pH = 9, temperature 55 °C, and after 24 h. The produced Cs derivatives showed exceptional reusability by maintaining higher adsorption effectiveness throughout five cycles. The MB dye was adsorbed onto the modified derivatives according to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. Moreover, the adsorption process was monitored via atomic force microscopy to verify the differences between the dye-free and dye-loaded adsorbents.

Chitin-Based Magnesium Oxide Biocomposite for the Removal of Methyl Orange from Water

In this work, a cost-effective chitin-based magnesium oxide (CHt@MgO) biocomposite with excellent anionic methyl orange (MO) dye removal efficiency from water was developed. The CHt@MgO biocomposite was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and TGA/DTG. Results proved the successful synthesis of CHt@MgO biocomposite. Adsorption of MO on the CHt@MgO biocomposite was optimized by varying experimental conditions such as pH, amount of adsorbent (m), contact time (t), temperature (T), and initial MO concentration (C_o). The optimized parameters for MO removal by CHt@MgO biocomposite were as follows: pH, 6; m, 2 g/L; t, 120 min. Two common isotherm models (Langmuir and Freundlich) and three kinetic models (pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and intraparticle diffusion (IPD)) were tested for experimental data fitting. Results showed that Langmuir and PFO were the most suitable to respectively describe equilibrium and kinetic results on the adsorption of MO adsorption on CHt@MgO biocomposite. The maximum Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity (q_m) on CHt@MgO biocomposite toward MO dye was 252 mg/g at 60 °C. The reusability tests revealed that CHt@MgO biocomposite possessed high (90.7%) removal efficiency after the fifth regeneration cycle.

Double Valorization for a Discard-α-Chitin and Calcium Lactate Production from the Crab Polybius henslowii Using a Deep Eutectic Solvent Approach

Polybius henslowii, an abundant yet unexploited species of swimming crab, was investigated as a potential source of α-chitin and calcium lactate using deep eutectic solvents (DES) as extracting solvents. Choline chloride-malonic acid (CCMA) and choline chloride-lactic acid (CCLA) were used to obtain high purity α-chitin from ball-milled P. henslowii exoskeleton in 2 h at 120 °C, with yields of 12.05 ± 2.54% and 12.8 ± 1.54%, respectively. The physical and chemical characteristics of the obtained chitins were assessed using CHN elemental analysis, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the CCLA solvent was reusable three times with little effect on the extract purity, and calcium lactate was produced at the end of the recycling cycles. The ensuing calcium lactate was also characterized in terms of chemical and physical properties. The obtained chitin is a promising raw material for downstream processing and the double valorization pathway with the obtention of calcium salts may increase the viability of a DES-based approach for the processing of mineralized substrates.

Preparation of chitosan/tannin and montmorillonite films as adsorbents for Methyl Orange dye removal

A series of novel chitosan/tannin/montmorillonite (Cs/Tn/MMT) films were synthesised by loading different (from 0.2 to 0.5 wt%) and MMT (from 0.5 to 1.5 wt%) ratios, to be used as promising low-cost biosorbents for methyl orange (MO) removal from aqueous media. The prepared films were characterised using different techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, optical properties, colourimetric measurement, porosity, swelling and thickness. The effects of various parameters, i.e. initial MO concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature, were studied. The Cs/Tn0.2/MMT1 film showed a high removal efficiency of 95.62% and maximum adsorption capacity of 57.37 mg/g under the optimum adsorption conditions (initial methyl orange concentration 60 mg/L, pH 7 and 25 °C). The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo second order kinetic model and the experimental data were a good fit for the Langmuir isotherm indicating a homogeneous and monolayer adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters suggested physical adsorption and exothermic behaviour. Consequently, Cs/Tn/MMT films showed effective potential for the uptake of anionic dyes.

Applications of chitin and chitosan based biomaterials for the adsorptive removal of textile dyes from water - A comprehensive review

The presence of pollutants in the water bodies deteriorate the water quality and make it unfit for use. From an environmental perspective, it is essential to develop new technologies for the wastewater treatment and recycling of dye contaminated water. The surface modified chitin and chitosan biopolymeric composites based adsorbents, have an important role in the toxic organic dyes from removal wastewater. The surface modification of biopolymers with various organics and inorganics produces more active sites at the surface of the adsorbent, which enhances dye and adsorbent interaction more reliable. Herein, the work brought in the thought of the application of various chitin and chitosan composites in wastewater remediation and suggested the versatility in composites for the development of rapid, selective and effective removal processes for the detoxification of a variety of organic dyes. It further emphasizes the existing obstruction and impending prediction for the deprivation of dyes via adsorption techniques.

Adsorption Behavior of Methylene Blue Dye by Novel CrossLinked O-CM-Chitosan Hydrogel in Aqueous Solution: Kinetics, Isotherm and Thermodynamics

The chemical cross-linking of carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CM-chitosan), as a method for its modification, was performed using trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate to obtain novel cross-linked O-CM-chitosan hydrogel. Its structure was proven using FTIR, XRD and SEM. Its adsorption capacity for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution was studied. The effects of different factors on the adsorption process, such as the pH, temperature and concentration of the dye, in addition to applications of the kinetic studies of the adsorption process, adsorption isotherm and thermodynamic parameters, were studied. It was found that the amount of adsorbed MB dye increases with increasing temperature. A significant increase was obtained in the adsorption capacities and removal percentage of MB dye with increasing pH values. An increase in the initial dye concentration increases the adsorption capacities, and decreases the removal percentage. It was found that the pseudo-second-order mechanism is predominant, and the overall rate of the dye adsorption process appears to be controlled by more than one step. The Langmuir model showed high applicability for the adsorption of MB dye onto O-CM-chitosan hydrogel. The value of the activation energy (E_a) is 27.15 kJ mol⁻¹ and the thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. The regeneration and reuse of the investigated adsorbent was investigated.

Enhanced adsorption of acid Blue-25 dye onto chitosan/porous carbon composite modified in 1-allyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide ionic liquid

In this study, chitosan/porous carbon composite (C-PC) modified in 1-Allyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide [AMIM][Br] under airtight condition was prepared for the removal of Acid Blue-25 dye (AB-25) from aqueous medium. For comparison of adsorption efficiency of C-PC, chitosan-activated carbon composite (C-AC) was also prepared in 1% acetic acid. The adsorbents were characterised using SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, TGA and FTIR. The micrograph of C-PC revealed cavities and slightly rough surfaces dominated with similar sized and irregular shaped stone-like materials which differ from the precursors' micrograph. BET analysis revealed the domination of mesopores on the C-PC and C-AC surfaces, as the hydroxyl and amino group on C-PC are the main active sites for AB-25 dye uptake. The dye was better adsorbed onto C-PC at pH 2 and C-AC at pH 4. The adsorption capacity obtained for C-PC, C-AC, activated carbon (AC) and chitosan (CH) using Langmuir isotherm model are 3333.33 mg/g, 909.90 mg/g, 909.09 mg/g and 833.33 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data are well described by Langmuir and Fruendlich isotherms for adsorption of the dye onto C-PC, AC and CH. C-AC fitted into Langmuir isotherm only. The kinetics of the adsorption fitted into pseudo-second order indicating the possibility of chemical interactions in the adsorption process.

Chitosan modifications for adsorption of pollutants - A review

In recent times, research interest into the development of biodegradable, cost-effective and environmental friendly adsorbents with favourable properties for adsorption of pollutants is a challenge. Modification of chitosan via different physical and chemical methods have gained attention as a promising approach for removing organic (such as dyes and pharmaceuticals) and inorganic (such as metal/metal ions) pollutants from aqueous medium. In this regard, researchers have reported grafting and cross-linking approach among others as a potentially useful method for chitosan's modification for improved adsorption efficiency with respect to pollutant uptake. This article reviews the trend in chitosan modification, with regards to the summary of some recently published works on modification of chitosan and their adsorption application in pollutants (metal ion, dyes and pharmaceuticals) removal from aqueous medium. The review uniquely highlights some common cross-linkers and grafting procedures for chitosan modification, their influence on structure and adsorption capacity of modified-chitosan with respect to pollutants removal. Findings revealed that the performance of modified chitosan for adsorption of pollutants depends largely on the modification method adopted, materials used for the modification and adsorption experimental conditions. Cross-linking is commonly utilized for improving the chemical and mechanical stabilities of chitosan but usually decreases adsorption capacity of chitosan/modified-chitosan for adsorption of pollutants. However, literature survey revealed that adsorption capacity of cross-linked chitosan based materials have been enhanced in recently published works either by grafting, incorporation of solid adsorbents (e.g metals, clays and activated carbon) or combination of both prior to cross-linking.

Methyl Orange Photo-Degradation by TiO2 in a Pilot Unit under Different Chemical, Physical, and Hydraulic Conditions

The photo-catalytic degradation of a textile azo-dye as Methyl Orange was studied in an innovative unit constituted by a channel over which a layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyst in anatase form was deposited and activated by UVB irradiation. The degradation kinetics were followed after variation of the chemical, physical, and hydraulic/hydrodynamic parameters of the system. For this purpose, the influence of the TiO2 dosage (g/cm3), dye concentration (mg/L), pH of the solution, flow-rate (L/s), hydraulic load (cm), and irradiation power (W) were evaluated on the degradation rates. It was observed that the maximum dosage of TiO2 was 0.79 g/cm3 while for higher dosage a reduction of homogeneity of the cement conglomerate occurred. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) kinetic model was followed up to a dye concentration around 1 mg/L. It was observed that with the increase of the flow rate, an increase of the degradation kinetics was obtained, while the further increase of the flow-rate associated with the modification of the hydraulic load determined a decrease of the kinetic rates. The results also evidenced an increase of the kinetic rates with the increase of the UVB intensity. A final comparison with other dyes such as Methyl Red and Methylene Blue was carried out in consideration of the pH of the solution, which sensibly affected the removal efficiencies.

Microbial Conversion of Shrimp Heads to Proteases and Chitin as an Effective Dye Adsorbent

As a green and effective technique in the production of a large number of valuable products, the microbial conversion of chitinous fishery wastes is receiving much attention. In this study, protease production using the Paenibacillus mucilaginosus TKU032 strain was conducted on culture media containing several common types of chitinous fishery by-products serving as the carbon and nitrogen (C/N) nutrition source. Among the chitinous wastes, 1.5% (w/v) shrimp head powder (SHP) was found to be the most appropriate nutritional source for protease production when a maximal enzyme activity of 3.14 ± 0.1 U/mL was observed on the 3rd day of the culture period. The molecular mass of P. mucilaginosus TKU032 protease was estimated to be nearly 32 kDa by the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis method. The residual SHP obtained from the culture medium was also considered to be utilized for chitin extraction. The deproteinization rate of the fermentation was estimated to be 45%, and the chitin obtained from fermented SHP (fSHP) displayed a similar characteristic Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) profile as that from SHP. In addition, SHP, fSHP, and chitins obtained from SHP and fSHP were investigated for their adsorptive capacity of nine types of dyes, and chitin obtained from fSHP displayed a good adsorption rate on Congo Red and Red No. 7, at 99% and 97%, respectively. In short, the results provide potential support for the utilization of SHP in the production of P. mucilaginosus TKU032 protease via the fermentation as well as the preparation of chitin from fSHP as an effective dye adsorbent.

Marine-Derived Polymeric Materials and Biomimetics: An Overview

The review covers recent literature on the ocean as both a source of biotechnological tools and as a source of bio-inspired materials. The emphasis is on marine biomacromolecules namely hyaluronic acid, chitin and chitosan, peptides, collagen, enzymes, polysaccharides from algae, and secondary metabolites like mycosporines. Their specific biological, physicochemical and structural properties together with relevant applications in biocomposite materials have been included. Additionally, it refers to the marine organisms as source of inspiration for the design and development of sustainable and functional (bio)materials. Marine biological functions that mimic reef fish mucus, marine adhesives and structural colouration are explained.
