Graphene Oxide Based Magnetic Nanocomposites with Polymers as Effective Bisphenol-A Nanoadsorbents

The Selective Removal of Bisphenol A Using a Magnetic Adsorbent Fused with Bisphenol A-Binding Peptides

The potential of bisphenol A (BPA)-binding peptides fused to magnetic beads is demonstrated as novel adsorbents that are reusable and highly selective for BPA removal from aqueous environments, in which various interfering substances coexist. Magnetic beads harboring peptides (peptide beads) showed a higher BPA removal capacity (8.6 mg/g) than that of bare beads without peptides (2.0 mg/g). The BPA adsorption capacity of peptide beads increased with the number of peptides fused onto the beads, where monomeric, dimeric, or trimeric repeats of a BPA-binding peptide were fused to magnetic beads. The BPA-adsorbing beads were regenerated using a methanol-acetic acid mixture, and after six regeneration cycles, the adsorption capacity remained above 87% of its initial capacity. The selective removal of BPA was confirmed in the presence of BPA analogs with high structural similarity (bisphenol F and bisphenol S) or in synthetic wastewater. The present work is a pioneering study that investigates the selective affinity of peptides to remove specific organics with high selectivity from complex environmental matrices.

Thermal and bisphenol-A adsorption properties of a zinc ferrite/β-cyclodextrin polymer nanocomposite

The present study investigated the use of a nanocomposite, produced by reinforcing nanosize zinc ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄) in a porous β-CD based polymeric matrix (β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄), for the removal of Bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solutions via adsorption. The thermal stability of the β-CD-based polymer and β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite were investigated using simultaneous thermal analysis at four heating rates. Non-isothermal isoconversion methods were employed to study the thermal degradation kinetics of the β-CD based polymer before and after ZnFe₂O₄ nano-filling. The results showed that ZnFe₂O₄ nano-reinforcement increased the activation energy barrier for the thermal degradation of the β-CD-based polymeric matrix. Adsorption experiments showed that the β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite exhibited very high BPA adsorption within 5 minutes. Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic investigations revealed that the adsorption of BPA was via multilayer adsorption on a heterogeneous β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄ surface. The thermodynamic studies indicated that BPA adsorption on β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄ was spontaneous and exothermic. Overall, the β-CD-E-T/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite showed less thermal degradation and high efficiency for removing BPA from contaminated water, indicating its potential as a promising material for wastewater treatment applications.

Graphene-based materials for effective adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants: A critical and comprehensive review

Water scarcity has been felt in many countries and will become a critical issue in the coming years. The release of toxic organic and inorganic contaminants from different anthropogenic activities, like mining, agriculture, industries, and domestic households, enters the natural waterbody and pollutes them. Keeping this in view in combating the environmental crises, removing pollutants from wastewater is one of the ongoing environmental challenges. Adsorption technology is an economical, fast, and efficient physicochemical method for removing both organic and inorganic pollutants, even at low concentrations. In the last decade, graphene and its composite materials have become the center of attraction for numerous applications, including wastewater treatment, due to the large surface area, highly active surface, and exclusive physicochemical properties, which make them potential adsorbents with unique physicochemical properties, like low density, chemical strength, structural variability, and the possibility of large-scale fabrications. This review article provides a thorough summary/critical appraisal of the published literature on graphene-, GO-, and rGO-based adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater. The synthesis methods, experimental parameters, adsorption behaviors, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and the performance of the regeneration-desorption processes of these substances are scrutinized. Finally, the research challenges, limitations, and future research studies are also discussed. Certainly, this review article will benefit the research community by getting substantial information on suitable techniques for synthesizing such adsorbents and utilizing them in water treatment and designing water treatment systems.

Polystyrene-Fe3O4-MWCNTs Nanocomposites for Toluene Removal from Water

In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized by oxidation with strong acids HNO₃, H₂SO₄, and H₂O₂. Then, magnetite/MWCNTs nanocomposites were prepared and polystyrene was added to prepare polystyrene/MWCNTs/magnetite (PS:MWCNTs:Fe) nanocomposites. The magnetic property of the prepared nano-adsorbent PS:MWCNTs:Fe was successfully checked. For characterization, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and BET surface area were used to determine the structure, morphology, chemical nature, functional groups, and surface area with pore volume of the prepared nano-adsorbents. The adsorption procedures were carried out for fresh MWCNTs, oxidized MWCNTs, MWCNTs-Fe, and PS:MWCNTs:Fe nanocomposites in batch experiments. Toluene standard was used to develop the calibration curve. The results of toluene adsorption experiments exhibited that the PS:MWCNTs:Fe nonabsorbent achieved the highest removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of toluene removal. The optimum parameters for toluene removal from water were found to be 60 min, 2 mg nano-sorbent dose, pH of 5, solution temperature of 35 °C at 50 mL volume, toluene concentration of 50 mg/L, and shaking speed of 240 rpm. The adsorption kinetic study of toluene followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the best correlation (R²) value of 0.998, while the equilibrium adsorption study showed that the Langmuir isotherm was obeyed, which suggested that the adsorption is a monolayer and homogenous.

Polyethylenimine-Modified Magnetic Chitosan for the Uptake of Arsenic from Water

The removal of heavy metals from water has become a global environmental problem. Various materials have been applied as adsorbent to remove metals from water. In this field, nanomaterials have been gaining increasing interest due to their exceptional properties. In this work, we discuss the synthesis of a core-shell structure nanocomposite by the modification of magnetic chitosan (CS) (Fe3O4/CS) with polyethylenimine (PEI) to produce Fe3O4/CS/PEI composite for the adsorption of arsenic ions (As(V) and As(III)) from aqueous solution. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results indicated the successful combination of three components of the nanocomposite. The adsorption conditions were optimized by studying the effect of different parameters included pH, contact time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The optimum adsorption pH was found to be 6.7 while the optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 2.0 and 1.5 g/L for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The removal efficiency for the uptake of As(III) and As(V) ions over Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite at optimum conditions was found to be 99.5 and 99.7%, respectively. The experimental results were fitted using Freundlich’s and Langmuir’s isotherms. The data were more fitted to Langmuir isotherm providing a suggestion of monolayer adsorption with maximum adsorption capacity equal to 77.61 and 86.50 mg/g for the removal of As(III) and As(V), respectively. Moreover, linear regression coefficient (R2) indicated that the adsorption of arsenic ions over the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite obeyed pseudo 2nd order suggesting the chemisorption process. The reusability of the nanosorbent for arsenic uptake using sodium hydroxide as eluent was also assessed up to five cycles. Interestingly, Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite can be considered as a promising adsorbent for As ions’ removal from water and should be tested for the removal of other pollutants.

Ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water samples with a magnetic polyaniline modified graphene oxide nanocomposite

A novel magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite modified with polyaniline (Fe₃O₄@GO-PANI) was synthesized and applied for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (i.e. fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene) and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) (i.e. 2-nitrofluorene, 9-nitroanthracene, 1-nitropyrene and 3-nitrofluoranthene) prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The prepared nanomaterial was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The main experimental parameters affecting the extraction and desorption steps of the MSPE procedure were investigated and optimized. Under optimum conditions, coefficients of determination (r²) ranged between 0.9970 and 0.9995, limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) ranged between 0.04-0.05 ng mL^-1 for PAHs and 0.01-0.11 ng mL^-1 for N-PAHs, while the relative standard deviation for intra-day and inter-day repeatability were lower than 10.0% for PAHs and N-PAHs. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of tap, mineral and river water samples. Relative recoveries in spiked water samples ranged between from 91.6 to 114% and from 92.3 to 110% for PAHs and N-PAHs, respectively. The proposed method is simple, rapid, sensitive and the Fe₃O₄@GO-PANI sorbent can be reused for at least 15 times without significant decrease in extraction recovery.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of caffeine from surface water samples with a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe3O4 nanocomposite prior to its determination by GC-MS

A novel micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ (Bm) composite was synthesized from the active charcoal precursor BAX-1500 and used in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of caffeine prior to its determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main factors affecting the extraction and desorption steps of the MSPE procedure were investigated and optimized. These factors include extraction time, sorbent mass and salt addition for the adsorption step and type of eluent, desorption time and volume of desorption solution for the desorption step. Under optimum conditions, the absolute extraction recovery was found to be 91.1% and good linearity was observed in the investigated concentration range of 0.6–12.5 ng mL⁻¹ (R² = 0.9997). The limit of detection was 0.18 ng mL⁻¹ and the limit of quantification was 0.60 ng mL⁻¹. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of surface water samples. The proposed MSPE method is simple, rapid, sensitive and environmentally friendly.

A novel magnetic solid phase material based on a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite was used to extract caffeine from surface water samples. The method is efficient and rapid, and has minimum solvent consumption.

Sample Preparation Using Graphene-Oxide-Derived Nanomaterials for the Extraction of Metals

Graphene oxide is a compound with a form similar to graphene, composed of carbon atoms in a sp2 single-atom layer of a hybrid connection. Due to its significant surface area and its good mechanical and thermal stability, graphene oxide has a plethora of applications in various scientific fields including heterogenous catalysis, gas storage, environmental remediation, etc. In analytical chemistry, graphene oxide has been successfully employed for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds, metal ions, and proteins. Since graphene oxide sheets are negatively charged in aqueous solutions, the material and its derivatives are ideal sorbents to bind with metal ions. To date, various graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and evaluated for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from biological, environmental, agricultural, and food samples. In this review article, we aim to discuss the application of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites for the extraction of metal ions prior to their determination via an instrumental analytical technique. Applications of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the modification of graphene oxide and its functionalized derivatives are also discussed.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds Based on Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp²-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.
