Cubic Silver Nanoparticles Fixed on TiO2 Nanotubes as Simple and Efficient Substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Structural and Electromagnetic Signatures of Anatase and Rutile NTs and Sheets in Three Different Water Models under Different Temperature Conditions

Experimental studies of TiO2 nanotubes have been conducted for nearly three decades and have revealed the remarkable advantages of this material. Research based on computer simulations is much rarer, with research using density functional theory (DFT) being the most significant in this field. It should be noted, however, that this approach has significant limitations when studying the macroscopic properties of nanostructures such as nanosheets and nanotubes. An alternative with great potential has emerged: classical molecular dynamics simulations (MD). MD Simulations offer the possibility to study macroscopic properties such as the density of phonon states (PDOS), power spectra, infrared spectrum, water absorption and others. From this point of view, the present study focuses on the distinction between the phases of anatase and rutile TiO2. The LAMMPS package is used to study both the structural properties by applying the radial distribution function (RDF) and the electromagnetic properties of these phases. Our efforts are focused on exploring the effect of temperature on the vibrational properties of TiO2 anatase nanotubes and an in-depth analysis of how the phononic softening phenomenon affects TiO2 nanostructures to improve the fundamental understanding in different dimensions and morphological configurations. A careful evaluation of the stability of TiO2 nanolamines and nanotubes at different temperatures is performed, as well as the adsorption of water on the nanosurface of TiO2, using three different water models.

Experimental Studies on TiO2 NT with Metal Dopants through Co-Precipitation, Sol-Gel, Hydrothermal Scheme and Corresponding Computational Molecular Evaluations

In the last decade, TiO₂ nanotubes have attracted the attention of the scientific community and industry due to their exceptional photocatalytic properties, opening a wide range of additional applications in the fields of renewable energy, sensors, supercapacitors, and the pharmaceutical industry. However, their use is limited because their band gap is tied to the visible light spectrum. Therefore, it is essential to dope them with metals to extend their physicochemical advantages. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the preparation of metal-doped TiO₂ nanotubes. We address hydrothermal and alteration methods that have been used to study the effects of different metal dopants on the structural, morphological, and optoelectrical properties of anatase and rutile nanotubes. The progress of DFT studies on the metal doping of TiO₂ nanoparticles is discussed. In addition, the traditional models and their confirmation of the results of the experiment with TiO₂ nanotubes are reviewed, as well as the use of TNT in various applications and the future prospects for its development in other fields. We focus on the comprehensive analysis and practical significance of the development of TiO₂ hybrid materials and the need for a better understanding of the structural-chemical properties of anatase TiO₂ nanotubes with metal doping for ion storage devices such as batteries.

WO3 Nanopores Array Modified by Au Trisoctahedral NPs: Formation, Characterization and SERS Application

The WO₃ nanopores array was obtained by an anodization method in aqueous solution with addition of F^- ions. Several factors affecting the final morphology of the samples were tested such as potential, time, and F^- concentrations. The morphology of the formed nanopores arrays was examined by SEM microscopy. It was found that the optimal time of anodization process is in the range of 0.5-1 h. The nanopores size increased with the increasing potential. The XPS measurements do not show any contamination by F^- on the surface, which is common for WO_x samples formed by an anodization method. Such a layer was successfully modified by anisotropic gold trisoctahedral NPs of various sizes. The Au NPs were obtained by seed-mediated growth method. The shape and size of Au NPs was analysed by TEM microscopy and optical properties by UV-VIS spectroscopy. It was found that the WO₃-Au platform has excellent SERS activity. The R6G molecules could be detected even in the range of 10^-9 M.

Reduced graphene oxide on silver nanoparticle layers-decorated titanium dioxide nanotube arrays as SERS-based sensor for glyphosate direct detection in environmental water and soil

When glyphosate, a widely used organophosphate herbicide in agricultural applications, contaminates the environment, it could lead to chronic harm to human health. Herein, an efficient, air-stable and reusable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was designed to be an analytical tool for direct determination of glyphosate. A vertical heterostructure of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-wrapped dual-layers silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on titania nanotube (TiO2 NTs) arrays was constructed as a SERS substrate. The TiO2 NTs/AgNPs-rGO exhibited high SERS performance for methylene blue detection, offering an analytical enhancement factor (AEF) as large as 7.1 × 108 and the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 10-14 M with repeatability of 4.4 % relative standard deviation (RSD) and reproducibility of 2.0 % RSD. The sensor was stable in ambient and was reusable after photo-degradation. The designed sensor was successfully applied for glyphosate detection with a LOD of 3 µg/L, which is below the maximum contaminant level of glyphosate in environmental water, as recommended by the U.S. EPA and the European Union. A uniqueness of this study is that there is no significant difference between the real-world applications of the SERS sensor on direct glyphosate analysis in environmental samples compared to an analysis using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography.

Detection of L-Aspartic Acid with Ag-Doped ZnO Nanosheets Using Differential Pulse Voltammetry

Here, a sensitive voltametric electrochemical sensor probe was fabricated to reliably trace the detection of L-aspartic acid in phosphate-buffered medium using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) layered with a film of wet-chemically prepared Ag2O-doped ZnO nanosheets (NSs). EDS, FESEM, XPS, and X-ray diffraction analyses were implemented as characterizing tools of prepared NSs to confirm the structural and compositional morphology, binding energies of existing atoms, and the crystallinity of synthesized NSs. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was applied to the trace detection of L-aspartic acid, and exhibited a wide detection range of 15.0~105.0 µM, a limit of detection (3.5 ± 0.15 µM), and good sensitivity (0.2689 µA µM-1 cm-2). Besides these the precious reproducibility, stability, and efficient responses were perceived from the voltametric analysis of aspartic acid. Moreover, the proposed aspartic acid was subjected to experiments to potentially detect aspartic acid in real biological samples. Therefore, the development of an enzyme-free sensor by applying this method will be a smart technical approach in the near future.

Nanofunctionalization of Additively Manufactured Titanium Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Measurements

Powder bed fusion using a laser beam (PBF-LB) is a commonly used additive manufacturing (3D printing) process for the fabrication of various parts from pure metals and their alloys. This work shows for the first time the possibility of using PBF-LB technology for the production of 3D titanium substrates (Ti 3D) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements. Thanks to the specific development of the 3D titanium surface and its nanoscale modification by the formation of TiO2 nanotubes with a diameter of ~80 nm by the anodic oxidation process, very efficient SERS substrates were obtained after deposition of silver nanoparticles (0.02 mg/cm2, magnetron sputtering). The average SERS enhancement factor equal to 1.26 × 106 was determined for pyridine (0.05 M + 0.1 M KCl), as a model adsorbate. The estimated enhancement factor is comparable with the data in the literature, and the substrate produced in this way is characterized by the high stability and repeatability of SERS measurements. The combination of the use of a printed metal substrate with nanofunctionalization opens a new path in the design of SERS substrates for applications in analytical chemistry. Methods such as SEM scanning microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to determine the morphology, structure and chemical composition of the fabricated materials.

Plasmonic Spherical Nanoparticles Coupled with Titania Nanotube Arrays Prepared by Anodization as Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Applications: A Review

As surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) continues developing to be a powerful analytical tool for several probes, four important aspects to make it more accessible have to be addressed: low-cost, reproducibility, high sensibility, and recyclability. Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs) prepared by anodization have attracted interest in this field because they can be used as safe solid supports to deposit metal nanoparticles to build SERS substrate nanoplatforms that meet these four desired aspects. TiO₂ NTs can be easily prepared and, by varying different synthesis parameters, their dimensions and specific features of their morphology can be tuned allowing them to support metal nanoparticles of different sizes that can achieve a regular dispersion on their surface promoting high enhancement factors (EF) and reproducibility. Besides, the TiO₂ photocatalytic properties enable the substrate's self-cleaning property for recyclability. In this review, we discuss the different methodological strategies that have been tested to achieve a high performance of the SERS substrates based on TiO₂ NTs as solid support for the three main noble metal nanoparticles mainly studied for this purpose: Ag, Au, and Pt.

Silver nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanotube array for solid-phase microextraction and SERS detection of antibiotic residue in milk

The excessive use or abuse of antibiotics on dairy cows leads to residues in milk, which can represent a public health risk. However, in recent years the β-Lactamase was illegally used to degrade residual antibiotics in milk, which makes the traditional antibiotic detection methods ineffective. Therefore, there is an extremely urgent need for multi-analyte analysis techniques for the detection of antibiotic residues. Herein, we reported an ultra-fast, facile, and sensitive solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform for the detection of degraded antibiotics-2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MMT). The results showed that the log-log plot of SERS intensity to MMT concentration exhibits a superior linear relationship (R² = 0.992) in the concentration range of 0.5-1000 μM, with a detection limit of 0.11 μM. The silver nanoparticle-decorated TiO₂ nanotube array was successfully used as an all-in-one SPME-SERS substrate in the extraction and identification of the antibiotic degradation products in real milk. Due to the rapid pre-treatment, good reproducibility, and self-cleaning, the proposed SPME-SERS method has a great promise to be applied as a powerful tool for on-site detection in the field of food safety.

Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Formed on Nanostructured Non-Metallic Materials: Preparation and Characterization

The efficiency of the generation of Raman spectra by molecules adsorbed on some substrates (or placed at a very close distance to some substrates) may be many orders of magnitude larger than the efficiency of the generation of Raman spectra by molecules that are not adsorbed. This effect is called surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In the first SERS experiments, nanostructured plasmonic metals have been used as SERS-active materials. Later, other types of SERS-active materials have also been developed. In this review article, various SERS substrates formed on nanostructured non-metallic materials, including non-metallic nanostructured thin films or non-metallic nanoparticles covered by plasmonic metals and SERS-active nanomaterials that do not contain plasmonic metals, are described. Significant advances for many important applications of SERS spectroscopy of substrates based on nanostructured non-metallic materials allow us to predict a large increase in the significance of such nanomaterials in the near future. Some future perspectives on the application of SERS substrates utilizing nanostructured non-metallic materials are also presented.

Nanostructured Anodic Copper Oxides as Catalysts in Electrochemical and Photoelectrochemical Reactions

Recently, nanostructured copper oxides formed via anodizing have been intensively researched due to their potential catalytic applications in emerging issues. The anodic Cu2O and CuO nanowires or nanoneedles are attractive photo- and electrocatalysts since they show wide array of desired electronic and morphological features, such as highly-developed surface area. In CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2RR) copper and copper-based nanostructures indicate unique adsorption properties to crucial reaction intermediates. Furthermore, anodized copper-based materials enable formation of C2+ hydrocarbons and alcohols with enhanced selectivity. Moreover, anodic copper oxides provide outstanding turnover frequencies in electrochemical methanol oxidation at lowered overpotentials. Therefore, they can be considered as precious metals electrodes substituents in direct methanol fuel cells. Additionally, due to the presence of Cu(III)/Cu(II) redox couple, these materials find application as electrodes for non-enzymatic glucose sensors. In photoelectrochemistry, Cu2O-CuO heterostructures of anodic copper oxides with highly-developed surface area are attractive for water splitting. All the above-mentioned aspects of anodic copper oxides derived catalysts with state-of-the-art background have been reviewed within this paper.

Plasma-Enabled Amorphous TiO2 Nanotubes as Hydrophobic Support for Molecular Sensing by SERS

We devise a unique heteronanostructure array to overcome a persistent issue of simultaneously utilizing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering, inexpensive, Earth-abundant materials, large surface areas, and multifunctionality to demonstrate near single-molecule detection. Room-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and thermal evaporation provide high-density arrays of vertical TiO₂ nanotubes decorated with Ag nanoparticles. The role of the TiO₂ nanotubes is 3-fold: (i) providing a high surface area for the homogeneous distribution of supported Ag nanoparticles, (ii) increasing the water contact angle to achieve superhydrophobic limits, and (iii) enhancing the Raman signal by synergizing the localized electromagnetic field enhancement (Ag plasmons) and charge transfer chemical enhancement mechanisms (amorphous TiO₂) and by increasing the light scattering because of the formation of vertically aligned nanoarchitectures. As a result, we reach a Raman enhancement factor of up to 9.4 × 10⁷, satisfying the key practical device requirements. The enhancement mechanism is optimized through the interplay of the optimum microstructure, nanotube/shell thickness, Ag nanoparticles size distribution, and density. Vertically aligned amorphous TiO₂ nanotubes decorated with Ag nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 10-12 nm provide enough sensitivity for near-instant concentration analysis with an ultralow few-molecule detection limit of 10^-12 M (Rh6G in water) and the possibility to scale up device fabrication.

Effect of Annealing on the Microstructure and SERS Performance of Mo-48.2% Ag Films

Mo-48.2% Ag films were fabricated by direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering and annealed in an argon atmosphere. The effects of annealing on the surface morphology, resistivity and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of Mo-48.2% Ag films were investigated. Results show a mass of polyhedral Ag particles grown on the annealed Mo-48.2% Ag films' surface, which are different from that of as-deposited Mo-Ag film. Moreover, the thickness and the resistivity of Mo-48.2% Ag films gradually decrease as the annealing temperature increases. Furthermore, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations proved that the re-deposition Ag layer increases the "hot spots" between adjacent Ag nanoparticles, thereby greatly enhancing the local electromagnetic (EM) field. The Ag layer/annealed Mo-48.2% Ag films can identify crystal violet (CV) with concentration lower than 5 × 10-10 M (1 mol/L = 1 M), which indicated that this novel type of particles/films can be applied as ultrasensitive SERS substrates.

Immobilization of Cubic Silver Plasmonic Nanoparticles on TiO2 Nanotubes, Reducing the Coffee Ring Effect in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates prepared by immobilizing silver cubic nanoparticles (Ag CNPs) on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs) were used for investigations of the "coffee ring" (CR) effect and its impact on spatial reproducibility of measured Raman signals in comparison with flat surfaces (Ti and Si) where the CR effect is usually significant. The immobilization of nanoparticles from drops, which is a very simple technique, usually does not permit a homogeneous distribution of deposited NPs because there is significant accumulation of the material at the boundary of the drying area. Our proposed SERS substrates effectively reduced the CR effect through the use of well-ordered nanostructures where a smaller number of Ag CNPs were transferred to the boundary region. It was not only the surface morphology that was important but also the physicochemical properties of TiO₂ NTs, such as wettability. The wettability of the prepared samples was determined by measuring the static water contact angle (WCA), and the chemical composition near the boundary of the drying area was studied using Auger electron spectroscopy. The morphology of the substrates obtained was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Our studies showed that reducing the coffee ring effect increased the spatial reproducibility of the measured SERS signal in the area of the deposited CNPs. Therefore, the platforms obtained may be very useful in commercial SERS applications.
