In-Situ Deposition of Graphene Oxide Catalyst for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Using Atmospheric Plasma

Enhanced Osteogenesis in 2D and 3D Culture Systems Using RGD Peptide and α-TCP Phase Transition within Alginate-Based Hydrogel

Cell-laden hydrogels have been extensively investigated in various tissue engineering fields by their potential capacity to deposit numerous types of cells in a specific area. They are largely used in soft-tissue engineering applications because of their low mechanical strength. In addition, sodium alginate is well-known for its encapsulation, loading capacity and for being easily controllable; however, it lacks cell-binding ligands and hence the ability to adhere cells. In this study, it is aimed to enhance osteogenesis in cells encapsulated in alginate and improve its mechanical properties by introducing a synthetic peptide and calcium phosphate phase transition. To increase cell-hydrogel interactions and increasing cell viability, an RGD peptide is added to a photocrosslinkable methacrylate-modified alginate, and alpha-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is added to the hydrogel to increase its mechanical strength via phase transition. Cell proliferation, growth, and differentiation are assessed in both 2D and 3D cell cultures. The addition of α-TCP significantly improved the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Moreover, the RGD peptide and α-TCP showed a synergistic effect with significantly improved cell adhesion and osteogenesis in both 2D and 3D cell cultures. Therefore, the functional hydrogel developed in this study can potentially be used for bone tissue regeneration.

Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution of Immobilized Copper Complex on Carbonaceous Materials: From Neutral Water to Seawater

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an appealing strategy to utilize renewable electricity to produce green H2. Moreover, use of neutral-pH electrolyte such as water and seawater for the HER has long been desired for eco-friendly energy production that aligns with net zero emission goal. Herein, new heterogeneous catalysts were developed by dispersing an HER-active copper complex containing N4-Schiff base macrocycle (CuL) on carbonaceous materials, i. e. multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene oxide (GO), via non-covalent interaction and investigated their HER performance. It was found that CuL/GO exhibited higher HER activity than CuL/CNT, possibly due to its significantly larger amount of CuL immobilized onto GO. In addition, CuL/GO showed satisfactory HER performance in a neutral (pH 7) NaCl electrolyte solution. Notably, the performances of CuL/GO were boosted up when performed in natural seawater sample with the faradaic efficiency of 70 % and 3 times higher amount of H2 at -0.6 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), in comparison to the HER in a NaCl electrolyte. Furthermore, it possessed a low overpotential of 139 mV at -10 mA/cm2. This demonstrated the potential use of CuL/GO as an effective HER catalyst in seawater for further sustainable development.

Enhancement of properties of a cell-laden GelMA hydrogel-based bioink via calcium phosphate phase transition

To improve the properties of the hydrogel-based bioinks, a calcium phosphate phase transition was applied, and the products were examined. We successfully enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogels by adding small amounts (< 0.5 wt%) of alpha-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) to photo-crosslinkable gelatin methacrylate (GelMA). As a result of the hydrolyzing calcium phosphate phase transition involvingα-TCP, which proceeded for 36 h in the cell culture medium, calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite was produced. Approximately 18 times the compressive modulus was achieved for GelMA with 0.5 wt%α-TCP (20.96 kPa) compared with pure GelMA (1.18 kPa). Although cell proliferation decreased during the early stages of cultivation, both osteogenic differentiation and mineralization activities increased dramatically when the calcium phosphate phase transition was performed with 0.25 wt%α-TCP. The addition ofα-TCP improved the printability and fidelity of GelMA, as well as the structural stability and compressive modulus (approximately six times higher) after three weeks of culturing. Therefore, we anticipate that the application of calcium phosphate phase transition to hydrogels may have the potential for hard tissue regeneration.

Construction of thickness-controllable bimetallic sulfides/reduced graphene oxide as a binder-free positive electrode for hybrid supercapacitors

Devices for electrochemical energy storage with exceptional capacitance and rate performance, outstanding energy density, simple fabrication, long-term stability, and remarkable reversibility have always been in high demand. Herein, a high-performance binder-free electrode (3D NiCuS/rGO) was fabricated as a supercapacitor by a simple electrodeposition process on a Ni foam (NF) surface. The thickness of the deposited materials on the NF surface was adjusted by applying a low cycle number of cyclic voltammetry (5 cycles) which produced a thin layer and thus enabled the easier penetration of electrolytes to promote electron and charge transfer. The NiCuS was anchored by graphene layers producing nicely integrated materials leading to a higher electroconductivity and a larger surface area electrode. The as-fabricated electrode displayed a high specific capacitance (2211.029 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1). The NiCuS/rGO/NF//active carbon device can achieve a stable voltage window of 1.5 V with a highly specific capacitance of 84.3 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. At a power density of 749 W kg-1, a satisfactory energy density of 26.3 W h kg-1 was achieved, with outstanding coulombic efficiency of 100% and an admirable life span of 96.2% after 10 000 GCD cycles suggesting the significant potential of the as-prepared materials for practical supercapacitors.

Strategies for Improving the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of Carbon Nitride-Based Catalysts

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and their-related environmental issues, sustainable, clean, and renewable energy is urgently needed to replace fossil fuel as the primary energy resource. Hydrogen is considered as one of the cleanest energies. Among the approaches to hydrogen production, photocatalysis is the most sustainable and renewable solar energy technique. Considering the low cost of fabrication, earth abundance, appropriate bandgap, and high performance, carbon nitride has attracted extensive attention as the catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production in the last two decades. In this review, the carbon nitride-based photocatalytic hydrogen production system, including the catalytic mechanism and the strategies for improving the photocatalytic performance is discussed. According to the photocatalytic processes, the strengthened mechanism of carbon nitride-based catalysts is particularly described in terms of boosting the excitation of electrons and holes, suppressing carriers recombination, and enhancing the utilization efficiency of photon-excited electron-hole. Finally, the current trends related to the screening design of superior photocatalytic hydrogen production systems are outlined, and the development direction of carbon nitride for hydrogen production is clarified.

Terahertz Optical Properties and Carrier Behaviors of Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot and Reduced Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot via Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with a band gap have been widely applied in many fields owing to their unique optical properties. To better utilize the optical advantages of GQDs, it is important to understand their optical characteristics. Our study demonstrates the optical properties and carrier behaviors of synthesized graphene oxide quantum dot (GOQD) and reduced graphene oxide quantum dot (rGOQD) pellets via Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The complex permittivity and optical conductivity are obtained in the terahertz region, indicating that the optical conductivity of the GOQD is higher than that of the rGOQD. Although rGOQD has a higher carrier density, approximately 1.5-times than that of GOQD, the lower charge carrier mobility of the rGOQD, which is obtained using Drude-Lorentz oscillator model fitting contributes to a decrease in optical conductivity. This lower mobility can be attributed to the more significant number of defect states within the rGOQD compared to GOQD. To the best of our knowledge, our study initially demonstrates the optical property and carrier behaviors of GOQD and rGOQD in the THz region. Moreover, this study provides important information on factors influencing carrier behavior to various fields in which carrier behavior plays an important role.

Optimized silk fibroin nanoparticle functionalization with anti-CEA nanobody enhancing active targeting of colorectal cancer cells

This work aimed to establish a simple and feasible method to obtain silk fibroin nanoparticles (SFNPs) with uniform particles size, and then modify the SFNPs with nanobody (Nb) 11C12 targeting the proximal membrane end of carcinoembryonic antigen on the surface of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. The regenerated silk fibroin (SF) was isolated using ultrafiltration tubes with a 50 kDa molecular weight cut-off, and the retention fraction (named as SF > 50 kDa) was further self-assembled into SFNPs by ethanol induction. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscop showed that the SFNPs with uniform particles size were formed. Due to electrostatic adsorption and pH responsiveness, SFNPs have been proved to effectively load and release the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) (DOX@SFNPs). Further, targeting molecule Nb 11C12 was used to modify these nanoparticles, constituting the targeted outer layer of the drug delivery system (DOX@SFNPs-11C12), achieving precise localization to cancer cells. The release amount of DOX observed fromin vitrodrug release profiles increased as follows: pH 7.4 < pH 6.8 < pH 5.4, demonstrating that the DOX release could be accelerated in a weakly acidic environment.In vitrocytotoxicity experiments displayed that SFNPs-11C12 nanoparticles exhibited good safety and biocompatibility. Drug-loaded nanoparticles, DOX@SFNPs-11C12, led to higher LoVo cells apoptosis compared to DOX@SFNPs. Fluorescence spectrophotometer characterization and confocal laser scanning microscopy further showed that the internalization of DOX was highest in the DOX@SFNPs-11C12, certifying that the introduced targeting molecule enhanced the uptake of drug delivery system by LoVo cells. This study provides a simple and operational approach to developing an optimized SFNPs drug delivery system modified by targeting Nb, which can be a good candidate for CRC therapy.

Manipulating wettability of catalytic surface for improving ammonia production from electrochemical nitrogen reduction

An electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is considered a promising alternative for the traditional Haber-Bosch process. In this study, we present a method for improving the ENRR by controlling the wettability of the catalyst surface, suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) while facilitating N₂ adsorption. Reduced-graphene oxide (rGO) with a hydrophobic surface property and a contact angle (C.A.) of 59° was synthesized through a high-density atmospheric plasma deposition. Two other hydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces with a C.A. of 15° and 150° were developed through additional argon plasma and heat treatment of as-deposited rGO, respectively. The ENRR results showed that the ammonia yield and Faradaic efficiency tended to increase with increasing hydrophobicity. Electrochemical measurements reveal that superhydrophobic rGO achieves a higher Faradaic efficiency (5.73 %) at -0.1 V (vs RHE) and a higher NH₃ yield (9.77 μg h^-1 cm^-2) at -0.4 V (vs RHE) in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the computational fluid dynamics simulation confirmed that the amount of time the N₂ gas remains on the surface could increase by improving the hydrophobicity of the catalytic surface. This study inspires the development of the rGO electrocatalyst through surface wettability modification for boosting ammonia electrosynthesis.

Thermal Treatment of Polyvinyl Alcohol for Coupling MoS2 and TiO2 Nanotube Arrays toward Enhancing Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, using semiconductor photoelectrodes, is considered a promising renewable energy source and solution for environmental sustainability. Herein, we report polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder material for combining MoS2 and TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) to improve PEC water splitting ability. By a thermal treatment process, the formation of the π conjunction in the PVA structure enhanced the PEC performance of MoS2/TNAs, exhibiting linear sweeps in an anodic direction with the current density over 65 μA/cm2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Besides, the photoresponse ability of MoS2/TNAs is approximately 6-fold more significant than that of individual TNAs. Moreover, a Tafel slope of 140.6 mV/decade has been obtained for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of MoS2/TNAs materials.

Facile deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles on porous alumina discs, an efficient antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and antifouling strategy for functional contact surfaces

Surface modification is an emerging strategy for the design of contact materials. Fabricated alumina discs were functionalized by deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles. The surfaces were characterized for physico-chemical, antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against microbial pathogens. The surface demonstrated improved hydrophobicity and a surface silver nanoparticle content of 6.4 w%. A reduction of more than 99.9% in CFU mL^-i was observed against the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria tested, with >90% reduction of the fungal isolate. After 4 h, microbial adhesion was reduced by >99.9 and 90% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Scanning electron micrographs further revealed a biofilm reduction. Cell viability tests indicated a bioincompatibility higher than 80% with Caco-2 and HaCaT cell lines after 48 h contact. The results suggest that deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles on the surface of contact materials could be employed as a strategy to prevent biofilm formation.

Challenges and prospects about the graphene role in the design of photoelectrodes for sunlight-driven water splitting

Graphene and its derivatives have emerged as potential materials for several technological applications including sunlight-driven water splitting reactions. This review critically addresses the latest achievements concerning the use of graphene as a player in the design of hybrid-photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical cells. Insights about the charge carrier dynamics of graphene-based photocatalysts which include metal oxides and non-metal oxide semiconductors are also discussed. The concepts underpinning the continued progress in the field of graphene/photoelectrodes, including different graphene structures, architecture as well as the possible mechanisms for hydrogen and oxygen reactions are also presented. Despite several reports having demonstrated the potential of graphene-based photocatalysts, the achieved performance remains far from the targeted benchmark efficiency for commercial application. This review also highlights the challenges and opportunities related to graphene application in photoelectrochemical cells for future directions in the field.

Physicochemical properties and performance of graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile composite fibers as supercapacitor electrode materials

Graphene oxide derived from palm kernel shells (rGOPKS) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were electrospun into composite fiber mats and evaluated as supercapacitor electrode materials. Their morphologies and crystalline properties were examined, and chemical interactions between rGOPKS and PAN were investigated. The diameters of individual fibers in the rGOPKS/PAN composite mats ranged from 1.351 to 1506 μm and increased with increasing rGOPKS content. A broad peak centered near 23° in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of rGOPKS corresponded to the (002) planes in graphitic carbon. Characteristic rGOPKS and PAN peaks were observed in the XRD patterns of all the composite fibers, and their Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated hydrogen bond formation between rGOPKS and PAN. The composite fiber mats had smooth and homogeneous surfaces, and they exhibited excellent flexibility and durability. Their electrochemical performance as electrodes was assessed, and a maximum specific capacitance of 203 F g-1 was achieved. The cycling stability of this electrode was excellent, and it retained over 90% of its capacitance after 5000 cycles. The electrode had an energy density of 17 W h kg-1 at a power density of 3000 W kg-1. Dielectric results showed a nanofiber composite dielectric constant of 72.3 with minor leakage current (tan δ) i.e., 0.33 at 51 Hz. These results indicate that the rGOPKS/PAN composite fibers have great promise as supercapacitor electrode materials.

Synthesis of Graphene Oxide Using Atmospheric Plasma for Prospective Biological Applications

INTRODUCTION

This paper presents a novel technique for the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) with various surface features using high-density atmospheric plasma deposition. Furthermore, to investigate the use of hydrophobic, super-hydrophobic, and hydrophilic graphene in biological applications, we synthesized hydrophobic, super-hydrophobic, and hydrophilic graphene oxides by additional heat treatment and argon plasma treatment, respectively. In contrast to conventional fabrication procedures, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) formed under low pressure and high-temperature environment using a new synthesis method-developed and described in this study-offers a convenient deposition method on any kind surface with controlled wettability.

METHODS

High density at atmospheric plasma is used for the synthesis of rGO and GO and its biocompatibility based on various wetting properties was evaluated using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, and the viability of cells in response to rGO and GO with various surface features was investigated. Structural integrity was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, FESEM and FE-TEM. Wettability was measured via contact angle method and confirmed with XPS analysis.

RESULTS

We found that GO coating with a hydrophilic feature is more biocompatible than other surfaces as observed in case of fibroblast cells. We have shown that wettability-controlled by GO deposition-influences biocompatibilities and antibacterial effect of biomaterial surfaces.

DISCUSSION

Measuring the contact angle, it is found that contact angle for hydrophobic is increased to 150.590 and reduced to 11.580 by heat and argon plasma treatment, respectively, from 75.880 that was initially in the case of hydrophobic surface. XPS analysis confirmed various oxygen-containing functional groups transforming as deposited hydrophobic surface into superhydrophobic and hydrophilic surface. Thus, we have proposed a new, direct, cost-effective, and highly productive method for the synthesis of rGO and GO-with various surface properties-for biological applications. Similarly, for the dental implant application, the Streptococcus mutans was used as an antibacterial effect and found that S. mutans grows slowly on hydrophilic surface. Thus, antibacterial effect was prominent on GO with hydrophilic surface.

Novel Materials for Sustainable Energy Conversion and Storage

Sustainability is highly desired for human beings due to a rapidly changing global climate and numerous environmental issues. In past decades, state-of-the-art studies have been extensively conducted to achieve sustainable energy conversion and storage. However, the remaining challenges in the commercialization of energy conversion and storage devices are to develop novel materials and advanced manufacturing processes. Furthermore, the engineering of nanostructures and device-architectures is of great importance for the energy conversion and storage flat forms. This Special Issue “Novel Materials for Sustainable Energy Conversion and Storage” aims the state-of-the-art research reports of novel nanomaterials and the engineering of device architectures for divergent energy conversion and storage applications with high sustainability involving solar energy systems, electrochemical cells, artificial photosynthesis or secondary (rechargeable) batteries, as highlighted in this editorial.

The Influence of Deposition Time on the Structural, Morphological, Optical and Electrical Properties of ZnO-rGO Nanocomposite Thin Films Grown in a Single Step by USP

Thin films of nanocomposite of zinc oxide–reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) deposited on soda-lime glass substrates were prepared using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at 460 °C. The preparation process does not use harsh acids and is environmentally friendly. The deposition period of 2, 3.5 and 5 min resulted in compact, uniform samples with thicknesses of 148, 250 and 365 nm, respectively. After performing structural, morphological, optical and electrical characterization of the prepared nanocomposite, an influence of the deposition time on the physical properties of the obtained films was determined. TEM analyses indicate that the ZnO-rGO nanocomposite presents ZnO nanoparticles anchored on graphene sheets, while XRD, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman results show the presence of a ZnO phase in the ZnO-rGO films. HR-SEM studies showed changes of the ZnO-rGO thin films morphology due to the incorporation of graphene into the ZnO films. Here, the particles of ZnO are similar to small grains of rice and graphene films have the appearance of a little “rose”. As the thickness of the film increases with deposition time, it reduces the structure of resistance of the nanocomposite thin films to 135 Ω. In addition, the optical transmission of the thin films in the visible region resulted affected. Here, we report a simple methodology for the preparation of ZnO-rGO nanocomposite thin films.
