Characterization of Ethylene-propylene Composites Filled with Perlite and Vermiculite Minerals: Mechanical, Barrier, and Flammability Properties

Influence of Talc on the Properties of Silicone Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives

The article describes new silicone self-adhesive adhesives modified with the addition of talc. The obtained self-adhesive materials were characterized to determine their adhesive properties (adhesion, cohesion, and adhesion) and functional properties (pot life of the composition, shrinkage, and thermal properties of adhesives). Novel materials exhibited high thermal resistance above 225 °C while maintaining or slightly reducing other values (adhesion, cohesion, shrinkage, and tack). Selected composition: T 0.1 was used to prepare self-adhesives in industrial-scale production. Moreover, conducted test results revealed that the addition of talc delayed the thermal decomposition of the adhesive and provided reduced intensity of smoke emissions during combustion as well as the flammability of the adhesive layer.

Natural bioactive formulations for biodegradable cotton eco-fabrics with antimicrobial and fire-shielding properties

In this study, eco-friendly cotton fabrics with antimicrobial and flame-retardant properties were produced using newly developed bioactive formulations. The new natural formulations combine the biocidal properties of the biopolymer (chitosan (CS)) and essential oil (thyme oil) (EO) with the flame-retardant properties of mineral fillers (silica (SiO₂), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO₂), and hydrotalcite (LDH)). The modified cotton eco-fabrics were analyzed in terms of morphology (optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), color (spectrophotometric measurements), thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)), biodegradability, flammability (micro-combustion calorimetry (MCC)), and antimicrobial characteristics. The antimicrobial activity of the designed eco-fabrics was determined against different kinds of microorganism (S. aureus, E. coli, P. fluorescens, B. subtilis, A. niger, C. albicans). The antibacterial effects and flammability of the materials were found to depend strongly on the compositions of the bioactive formulation. The best results were obtained for the samples of fabric coated with the formulations containing LDH and TiO₂ filler. These samples showed the highest decreases in flammability, with heat release rate (HRR) values of 168 (W/g) and 139 (W/g), respectively, compared to the reference (233 W/g). The samples also showed very good inhibition of growth against of all the studied bacteria.

Effect of 3-Mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane Modified Illite on the Reinforcement of SBR

To achieve the sustainable development of the rubber industry, the substitute of carbon black, the most widely used but non-renewable filler produced from petroleum, has been considered one of the most effective ways. The naturally occurring illite with higher aspect ratio can be easily obtained in large amounts at lower cost and with lower energy consumption. Therefore, the expansion of its application in advanced materials is of great significance. To explore their potential use as an additive for reinforcing rubber, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites with illites of different size with and without 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (KH580) modification were studied. It was found that the modification of illite by KH580 increases the K-illite/SBR interaction, and thus improves the dispersion of K-illite in the SBR matrix. The better dispersion of smaller size K-illite with stronger interfacial interaction improves the mechanical properties of SBR remarkably, by an increment of about nine times the tensile strength and more than ten times the modulus. These results demonstrate, except for the evident effect of particle size, the great importance of filler-rubber interaction on the performance of SBR composites. This may be of great significance for the potential wide use of the abundant naturally occurring illite as substitute filler for the rubber industry.

Advanced Ethylene-Propylene-Diene (EPDM) Rubber Composites Filled with Raw Silicon Carbide or Hybrid Systems with Different Conventional Fillers

We studied the effects of silicon carbide (SiC) and SiC hybrid systems with different conventional fillers (silica, carbon black, graphene, hydrotalcite, halloysite) on the rheometric measurements, crosslink density, mechanical performance, aging stability, morphology, thermal behaviour, and flammability of ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber composites. The hybrid filler systems showed technically promising synergetic effects on the performance of the EPDM composites. A pronounced reinforcing effect in EPDM composites filled with hybrid SiC filler systems was noted. Tensile strength increased in the systems with carbon black, silica, and graphene nanoplatelets, by 21%, 37%, and 68%, respectively, compared to the neat EPDM. Dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed a shift of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of EPDM composites towards higher values following the incorporation of hybrid SiC fillers, indicating that the mobility of the macromolecule chains was restricted by the presence of filler particles. Importantly, the application of SiC as a filler in EPDM rubber composites contributed to a considerable reduction in flammability, as demonstrated by microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC). The most promising results were obtained for HAL/SiC and LDH/SiC hybrid systems, which produced final composites with high flame retardancy and good mechanical performance. The study highlights the significant potential of SiC and SiC hybrid systems as effective fillers improving the properties of elastomer composites.

Influence of the Silica Specific Surface Area and Ionic Liquids on the Curing Characteristics and Performance of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Composites

In this work, we present the effect of silica’s specific surface area (180 m²·g⁻¹ and 380 m²·g⁻¹, respectively) on the crosslinking of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites, as well as their crosslink density and functional properties, such as thermal stability, damping behavior, resistance to thermo-oxidative aging, and tensile properties. Ionic liquids (ILs) with a bromide anion and different cations, i.e., 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmi), 1-butyl-3-methylpyrrolidinium (Bmpyr), and 1-butyl-3-methylpiperidinium (Bmpip), were used to enhance the cure characteristics of SBR compounds and the functional properties of SBR vulcanizates. It was proven that apart from the silica’s specific surface area, the filler–polymer and filler–filler physical interactions have a significant impact on the vulcanization kinetics of silica-filled SBR composites. Additionally, the performed studies have shown that ILs positively affected the dispersion of silica’s particles and reduced their ability to form agglomerates in the elastomer matrix, which enhanced the functional properties of the SBR vulcanizates.

Study on the Use of CTAB-Treated Illite as an Alternative Filler for Natural Rubber

Fillers are indispensable for rubber composites. Carbon black as an efficient reinforcing filler is most widely used in the rubber industry. However, the utilization of nonrenewable feedstock, energy consumption, and footprint for making carbon black lead to the seeking of alternative substitutes for carbon black, which is of great significance. Here in this work, the possibility of illite, a most common mineral in sedimentary rocks, as an alternative filler for natural rubber (NR) is determined. It is found that pristine illite slows the curing rate and decreases the cross-linking density of NR, which results in the inferior performance of NR. This is associated with the weak filler-rubber interaction, which is a vital factor in deciding the performance of rubber composites. Therefore, illite has been modified using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a commonly used cation surfactant, for improving the filler-rubber interaction. The thus obtained C-illite is confirmed to be efficient for (i) enhancing the illite-NR interaction, (ii) improving the dispersion of illite in the NR matrix, and (iii) accelerating the curing process of NR with increased cross-linking density. All of these lead to significantly improved mechanical properties and wear resistance of the C-illite/NR composites, e.g., a 71.88% increase of the modulus at 300% strain compared to the pure NR and a 23.79% reduction of the DIN abrasion volume compared to the NR filled with 40 phr pristine illite. This illustrates the high possibility of CTAB-modified illite with an optimal particle size as a promising alternative filler of carbon black for reinforcing rubbers.

Experimental Investigation of the Mechanical Properties and Fire Behavior of Epoxy Composites Reinforced by Fabrics and Powder Fillers

Different types of fabrics, such as aramid (A), carbon (C), basalt (B), glass (G), and flax (F), as well as powder fillers, were used to manufacture the epoxy-based hybrid composites by the hand-lay-up method. In this work, a few research methods, including hardness, flexural tests, puncture impact behavior, as well as cone calorimetry (CC) measurements, were applied to determine the impact of type fillers and order of fabrics on the performance and burning behavior of hybrid composites. The mechanical properties were evaluated to correlate with the microstructure and consider together with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data.

Effect of LDHs and Other Clays on Polymer Composite in Adsorptive Removal of Contaminants: A Review

Recently, the development of a unique class of layered silicate nanomaterials has attracted considerable interest for treatment of wastewater. Clean water is an essential commodity for healthier life, agriculture and a safe environment at large. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and other clay hybrids are emerging as potential nanostructured adsorbents for water purification. These LDH hybrids are referred to as hydrotalcite-based materials or anionic clays and promising multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. They are used in many applications including photocatalysis, energy storage, nanocomposites, adsorption, diffusion and water purification. The adsorption and diffusion capacities of various toxic contaminants heavy metal ions and dyes on different unmodified and modified LDH-samples are discussed comparatively with other types of nanoclays acting as adsorbents. This review focuses on the preparation methods, comparison of adsorption and diffusion capacities of LDH-hybrids and other nanoclay materials for the treatment of various contaminants such as heavy metal ions and dyes.

The Essential Role of 1-Butyl-3-Methylimidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids in the Development of Transparent Silica-Filled Elastomer Systems

In this paper, we present the design of reinforced silica-filled elastomer composites exhibiting a high transparency, high mechanical performance in static and dynamic conditions, and improved electrical conductivity. Two different imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) were used with increasing loads: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIMTFSI) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminate (BMIMAlCl4). The composites were prepared in a two-roll mill. The influence of the ILs on the dispersion of the silica in the nitrile rubber (NBR) matrix was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of ILs in the NBR/SiO2 systems improved the crosslink density and ionic conductivity of the composites. Their mechanical properties and aging stability remained almost unchanged, at a very satisfactory level. Greater crosslinking was observed for the NBR/SiO2 composites containing BMIMAlCl4, due to its catalytic effect on the efficiency of interface crosslinking reactions. We found the optimal formulation for obtaining transparent reinforced NBR/SiO2 composites. The application of 2.5 phr of BMIMAlCl4 resulted in a high transparency in the case of NBR composites filled with 30 phr of silica.
