Study on Physical Properties of Mortar for Section Restoration Using Calcium Nitrite and CO2 Nano-Bubble Water

Effects of Nitrite/Nitrate-Based Accelerators on Strength and Deformation of Cementitious Repair Materials under Low-Temperature Conditions

This study aimed to develop a cementitious repair material that can be constructed in cold weather conditions. The addition of nitrite/nitrate-based antifreezing agents has been shown to increase the initial strength of cementitious repair materials in cold weather. However, increasing the amount of these agents may lead to an increase in deformation behavior and shrinkage cracking. In this study, the effects of different types and amounts of nitrite/nitrate-based antifreezing agents on the strength development and deformation behavior of cementitious repair materials under low-temperature conditions were evaluated. As a result, it was found that the addition of a large amount of calcium nitrite can promote hydration and improve the initial strength of the repair material, irrespective of the type of antifreezing agent. However, this also leads to an increase in shrinkage and the concern of shrinkage cracking. Therefore, a repair material that is repairable in winter was developed by balancing the initial strength and deformation behavior through the appropriate selection of antifreezing agents. The developed repair material can be used to repair structures in cold weather conditions, which is of great significance for the construction industry in Hokkaido, Japan.

Nanobubble size distribution measurement by interactive force apparatus under an electric field

Nanobubbles have been applied in many fields, such as environmental cleaning, material production, agriculture, and medicine. However, the measured nanobubble sizes differed among the measurement methods, such as dynamic light scattering, particle trajectory, and resonance mass methods. Additionally, the measurement methods were limited with respect to the bubble concentration, refractive index of liquid, and liquid color. Here, a novel interactive force measurement method for bulk nanobubble size measurement was developed by measuring the force between two electrodes filled with bulk nanobubble-containing liquid under an electric field when the electrode distance was changed in the nm scale with piezoelectric equipment. The nanobubble size was measured with a bubble gas diameter and also an effective water thin film layer covered with a gas bubble that was estimated to be approximately 10 nm based on the difference between the median diameter of the particle trajectory method and this method. This method could also be applied to the solid particle size distribution measurement in a solution.

Physical Properties and Durability of Lime-Cement Mortars Prepared with Water Containing Micro-Nano Bubbles of Various Gases

The paper presents the experimental studies on the effect of the water containing micro-nano bubbles of various gases on the physico-mechanical properties of lime-cement mortars. In total, 7 types of mortars were prepared: with water containing the micro-nano bubbles of O₂, O₃ or CO₂ as 50% or 100% substitute of ordinary mixing water (tap water) and the reference mortar prepared using tap water. In order to determine the influence of water with micro-nano bubbles of gases, the consistency of fresh mortar and the physical properties of hardened mortar, i.e., specific and apparent density, total porosity, water absorption by weight and capillary absorption, were established. The mechanical strength of the considered mortars was studied as well by conducting the tests for flexural and compressive strengths following 14, 28 and 56 days. Reduced workability and capillary absorption were observed in the modified mortars within the range of 0.9-8.5%. The mortars indicated an increase in the flexural strength after 28 days ranging from 3.4% to 23.5% and improved compressive strength in 1.2-31%, in comparison to the reference mortar. The conducted studies indicated increased flexural and compressive strengths along with the share of micro-nano bubbles of gases in the mixing water.

Long-Term Stability of Different Kinds of Gas Nanobubbles in Deionized and Salt Water

Nanobubbles have many potential applications depending on their types. The long-term stability of different gas nanobubbles is necessary to be studied considering their applications. In the present study, five kinds of nanobubbles (N₂, O₂, Ar + 8%H₂, air and CO₂) in deionized water and a salt aqueous solution were prepared by the hydrodynamic cavitation method. The mean size and zeta potential of the nanobubbles were measured by a light scattering system, while the pH and Eh of the nanobubble suspensions were measured as a function of time. The nanobubble stability was predicted and discussed by the total potential energies between two bubbles by the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The nanobubbles, except CO₂, in deionized water showed a long-term stability for 60 days, while they were not stable in the 1 mM (milli mol/L) salt aqueous solution. During the 60 days, the bubble size gradually increased and decreased in deionized water. This size change was discussed by the Ostwald ripening effect coupled with the bubble interaction evaluated by the extended DLVO theory. On the other hand, CO₂ nanobubbles in deionized water were not stable and disappeared after 5 days, while the CO₂ nanobubbles in 1 mM of NaCl and CaCl₂ aqueous solution became stable for 2 weeks. The floating and disappearing phenomena of nanobubbles were estimated and discussed by calculating the relationship between the terminal velocity of the floating bubble and bubble size.
