Experimental and Numerical Study on Withdrawal Strength of Different Types of Auxetic Dowels for Furniture Joints

Physicochemical characteristics of airborne microplastics of a typical coastal city in the Yangtze River Delta Region, China

Airborne microplastics (MPs) are important pollutants that have been present in the environment for many years and are characterized by their universality, persistence, and potential toxicity. This study investigated the effects of terrestrial and marine transport of MPs in the atmosphere of a coastal city and compared the difference between daytime and nighttime. Laser direct infrared imaging (LDIR) and polarized light microscopy were used to characterize the physical and chemical properties of MPs, including number concentration, chemical types, shape, and size. Backward trajectories were used to distinguish the air masses from marine and terrestrial transport. Twenty chemical types were detected by LDIR, with rubber (16.7%) and phenol-formaldehyde resin (PFR; 14.8%) being major components. Three main morphological types of MPs were identified, and fragments (78.1%) are the dominant type. MPs in the atmosphere were concentrated in the small particle size segment (20-50 µm). The concentration of MPs in the air mass from marine transport was 14.7 items/m3 - lower than that from terrestrial transport (32.0 items/m3). The number concentration of airborne MPs was negatively correlated with relative humidity. MPs from terrestrial transport were mainly rubber (20.2%), while those from marine transport were mainly PFR (18%). MPs in the marine transport air mass were more aged and had a lower number concentration than those in the terrestrial transport air mass. The number concentration of airborne MPs is higher during the day than at night. These findings could contribute to the development of targeted control measures and methods to reduce MP pollution.

Analyses of L-Type Corner Joints Connected with Auxetic Dowels for Case Furniture

Tests were carried out to develop and manufacture various types of auxetic dowels using 3D printing technology. These dowels were then used to connect L-type corner joint specimens for case furniture, and their strength and stiffness were analyzed through experimental, theoretical, and numerical means. In the scope of the study, eight different types of auxetic dowels including two inclusion types, two inclusion sizes, and two dowel hole diameters, as well as a reference non-auxetic dowel, were designed. Accordingly, a total of 180 specimens that included 10 replications for each group were tested; 90 were tested under tension and the remaining 90 were tested under compression. The results demonstrated that the assembly force required for the corner joints connected with auxetic dowels was significantly lower compared to non-auxetic dowels. Furthermore, the numerical and theoretical analyses yielded similar outcomes in this study. Both analyses revealed that the dowels used to connect the corner joints experienced substantial stresses during mounting and bending, ultimately leading to their failure. Upon concluding the test results, it was observed that the corner joints connected with dowels featuring rectangular inclusions exhibited superior performance when compared to those with triangular inclusions. In light of these findings, it can be concluded that further enhancements are necessary for auxetic dowels with rectangular inclusions before they can be utilized as alternative fasteners for traditional dowels.

Optimization of the Cross-Sectional Geometry of Auxetic Dowels for Furniture Joints

In this study, the aim was to optimize the cross-sectional geometry of auxetic dowels for furniture joints. For this purpose, two different sizes of auxetic dowels were chosen, one for frame- and the other for panel-type furniture joints for designing the cross-sectional geometry. Auxetic patterns that are created on the cross-sectional area cause deficiency of the materials, and this phenomenon decreases the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and increases the member stress. Accordingly, maximum MOE values and minimum Poisson's ratio levels were determined for the optimum strength-auxetic behavior relation by means of a Monte Carlo method. Furthermore, Poisson's ratio of the optimized dowel's cross-section was confirmed with experimental tests, numerical analyses and analytical calculations. As a result, Poisson's ratio values were obtained as negative values and confirmed, which means the dowels designed in this study had auxetic behavior. In conclusion, it could be said that studies should be conducted on the performance of auxetic dowels in both frame and panel furniture joints.

Microplastic atmospheric dustfall pollution in urban environment: Evidence from the types, distribution, and probable sources in Beijing, China

Airborne microplastics (MPs) pollution is an environmental problem of increasing concern, due to the ubiquity, persistence and potential toxicity of plastics in the atmosphere. In recent years, most studies on MPs have focused on aquatic and sedimentary environments, but little research has been done on MPs in the urban atmosphere. In this study, a total of ten dustfall samples were collected in a transect from north to south across urban Beijing. The compositions, morphologies, and sizes of the MPs in these dustfall samples were determined by means of Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) imaging and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The number concentrations of MPs in the Beijing dustfall samples show an average of 123.6 items/g. The MPs concentrations show different patterns in the central, southern, and northern zones of Beijing. The number concentration of MPs was the highest in the central zone (224.76 items/g), as compared with the southern zone (170.55 items/g), and the northern zone (24.42 items/g). The LDIR analysis revealed nine compositional types of MPs, including Polypropylene (PP), Polyamide (PA), Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Silicone, Polycarbonate (PC), Polyurethane (PU) and Polyvinylchloride (PVC), among which PP was overall dominant. The PP dominates the MPs in the central zone (76.3%), and the PA dominates the MPs in the southern zone (55.86%), while the northern zone had a diverse combination of MPs types. The morphological types of the individual MPs particle include fragments, pellets, and fibers, among which fragments are dominant (70.9%). FESEM images show the presence of aged MPs in the Beijing atmosphere, which could pose a yet unquantified health risk to Beijing's residents. The average size of the MPs in the Beijing samples is 66.62 μm. Our study revealed that the numbers of fibrous MPs increase with the decrease in size. This pollution therefore needs to be carefully monitored, and methods of decreasing the sources and mitigations developed.

Effects of Braid Angle and Material Modulus on the Negative Poisson’s Ratio of Braided Auxetic Yarns

Fibers and textiles are ubiquitous in our daily lives, with mechanical properties that match the design specifications for the task for which they are intended; the development of yarns with a negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) is a hot topic of current research, owing to their potential for use in high-performance textiles (e.g., military, sports, etc.). This study described a simple approach to constructing braided, helically interlaced yarns. When a torque is applied, the yarns prevent the wrapped component from dislodging from the core. The geometry and auxetic behavior of the braided helical structure was analyzed for two different combinations of core materials with similar wrap materials and different braiding angles. Two elastomeric materials (polyurethane (PU) and polyester) served as monofilament cores, while two stiffer multifilament wrap yarns (ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) served as wrap yarns. In addition, the behavior of yarns braided at seven different angles was investigated to determine the materials’ response to the applied braided configuration’s NPR. The NPR was influenced by the core and wrap materials used and the braiding angle. The NPR value was greater for a core comprising more excellent elasticity (e.g., PU versus polyester); a smaller wrap angle and a slower braiding speed also led to a higher NPR value. The maximum NPR value of −1.70 was obtained using a PU core wrapped at a 9° angle and a strain value of 0.5.

3D Printing Application in Wood Furniture Components Assembling

Additive manufacturing (AM) is used in many fields and is a method used to replace wood components or wood-jointed furniture components in the furniture industry. Replacing wood joints by 3D printed connectors would be an advantage, considering the fact that during the process of assembling furniture, the execution technology of the joints is difficult, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Advanced technology of AM applied in furniture manufacturing helps the designers to create new concepts of product design, with no limits of shape, number of joints, color, or size. The diversity of 3D printers and AM technologies provides the selection of materials in relation with the applicability of the 3D printed object. In this respect, the objective of the present research is to design a 3D printed connector to be used for jointing three chair components, namely the leg and two stretchers made from larch (Larix decidua Mill.) wood, and to use reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) fiberglass (20 wt. %) filament for 3D printing this connector using AM with fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology. The design of the connector, the possibility of using this type of material, and the deposition method of filament were investigated in this research. For this purpose, several evaluation methods were applied: microscopic investigation with 50×, 100×, and 200× magnifications, both of the filament and of the 3D printed connector; mechanical testing of corner joint formed with the help of connector between chair leg and the two stretchers; and a microscopic investigation of the connectors’ defects that occurred after applying the compression and tensile loads on the diagonal direction of the L-type joint. The microscopic investigation of the composite filament revealed the agglomerations of glass fibers into the core matrix and areas where the distribution of the reinforcements was poor. The heterogeneous structure of the filament and the defects highlighted in the 3D printed connectors by the microscopic investigation contributed to the mechanical behavior of L-type connecting joints. The bending moments resulting from compression and tensile tests of the 3D printed connectors were compared to the results recorded after testing, under the same conditions, the normal mortise–tenon joint used to assemble the abovementioned chair components. The larch wood strength influenced the mechanical results and the conclusions of the microscopic investigations, as well as the analysis of the broken connectors after testing recommended the change of connector design and filament deposition direction.

On the application of additive manufacturing methods for auxetic structures: a review

Auxetic structures are a special class of structural components that exhibit a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) because of their constituent materials, internal microstructure, or structural geometry. To realize such structures, specialized manufacturing processes are required to achieve a dimensional accuracy, reduction of material wastage, and a quicker fabrication. Hence, additive manufacturing (AM) techniques play a pivotal role in this context. AM is a layer-wise manufacturing process and builds the structure as per the designed geometry with appreciable precision and accuracy. Hence, it is extremely beneficial to fabricate auxetic structures using AM, which is otherwise a tedious and expensive task. In this study, a detailed discussion of the various AM techniques used in the fabrication of auxetic structures is presented. The advancements and advantages put forward by the AM domain have offered a plethora of opportunities for the fabrication and development of unconventional structures. Therefore, the authors have attempted to provide a meaningful encapsulation and a detailed discussion of the most recent of such advancements pertaining to auxetic structures. The article opens with a brief history of the growth of auxetic materials and later auxetic structures. Subsequently, discussions centering on the different AM techniques employed for the realization of auxetic structures are conducted. The basic principle, advantages, and disadvantages of these processes are discussed to provide an in-depth understanding of the current level of research. Furthermore, the performance of some of the prominent auxetic structures realized through these methods is discussed to compare their benefits and shortcomings. In addition, the influences of geometric and process parameters on such structures are evaluated through a comprehensive review to assess their feasibility for the later-mentioned applications. Finally, valuable insights into the applications, limitations, and prospects of AM for auxetic structures are provided to enable the readers to gauge the vitality of such manufacturing as a production method.
