Synthesis and Application of Cellulose-Polyethyleneimine Composites and Nanocomposites: A Concise Review

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment Potential of Stearic Acid Nanoparticles of Quercetin in Rats

This study aims to assess the anti-inflammatory potential of stearic acid nanoparticles of quercetin in an arthritic rat model. This article describes the fabrication of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) using the hot melt encapsulation method, followed by the anti-inflammatory study of SLNs and other characterizations such as FTIR, XRD, and SEM. Thirty male healthy albino rats were taken and treated with FCA to induce rheumatoid arthritis. Quercetin loading of quercetin to stearic acid was confirmed by FTIR. The efficacy of quercetin-loaded SLNs to reduce inflammation was evaluated with the help of inflammatory biomarker levels. Quercetin-loaded stearic acid nanoparticles were successfully prepared by using a hot melt encapsulation method. Their average size and zeta potential were 100 nm and -25 mV, respectively. Rheumatoid arthritis was significantly (p < 0.001) reduced in the quercetin-loaded SLN group, as indicated by finding out the reduced levels of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and rheumatoid factor. Quercetin-loaded stearic acid nanoparticles were found to be potentially effective in treating RA.

Bio-Based Aerogels for the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Oils from Water: Novel Solutions for Environmental Remediation

Contamination of the aqueous environment caused by the presence of heavy metal ions and oils is a growing concern that must be addressed to reduce their detrimental impact on living organisms and safeguard the environment. Recent efficient and environmentally friendly remediation methods for the treatment of water are based on third-generation bioaerogels as emerging applications for the removal of heavy metal ions and oils from aqueous systems. The peculiarities of these materials are various, considering their high specific surface area and low density, together with a highly porous three-dimensional structure and tunable surface chemistry. This review illustrates the recent progress in aerogels developed from cellulose and chitosan as emerging materials in water treatment. The potential of aerogel-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is reported in terms of adsorption efficacy and reusability. Despite various gaps affecting the manufacturing and production costs of aerogels that actually limit their successful implementation in the market, the research progress suggests that bio-based aerogels are ready to be used in water-treatment applications in the near future.

Comparing the separation performance of poly(ethyleneimine) embedded butyric and octanoic acid based chromatographic stationary phases

Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) modified silica spheres were used to graft butyric acid and octanoic acid onto their surfaces, forming two stationary phases named Sil-PEI-BAD and Sil-PEI-CAD, respectively. Characterized methods including fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were utilized to determine the successful synthesis of these two stationary phase materials. The chromatographic performance of these two stationary phases was analyzed with hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds as analytes. Compared with Sil-PEI-CAD column, Sil-PEI-BAD column was more effective in separating hydrophilic compounds including nucleosides, alkaloids and vitamins. Hydrophobic substances including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkylbenzenes obtained excellent separation results on Sil-PEI-CAD column than Sil-PEI-BAD column. Additionally, according to the separation of phenols, Sil-PEI-CAD column can be used in HILIC/RPLC mixed-mode. The results showed that the properties and retention mechanisms of the prepared stationary phases depended on the length of the alkyl chains bonded on the silica surface.

Polymeric Wet-Strength Agents in the Paper Industry: An Overview of Mechanisms and Current Challenges

Polymeric wet-strength agents are important additives used in the paper industry to improve the mechanical properties of paper products, especially when they come into contact with water. These agents play a crucial role in enhancing the durability, strength, and dimensional stability of paper products. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the different types of wet-strength agents available and their mechanisms of action. We will also discuss the challenges associated with the use of wet-strength agents and the recent advances in the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly agents. As the demand for more sustainable and durable paper products continues to grow, the use of wet-strength agents is expected to increase in the coming years.

Comparison between nanocellulose-polyethylenimine composites synthesis methods towards multiple water pollutants removal: A review

Nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites have attracted growing attention due to their versatility as new materials for application in different fields. Water remediation is one of the traditional applications of these composites and their investigation as adsorbents for single water pollutants is well established. However, most water resources such as rivers, lakes, and even oceans contain complex mixtures of pollutants. Despite several recently published reviews on water purification technology, they only focused on these material as single pollutant removers and hardly mentioned their capacity to simultaneously recover multiple pollutants. Therefore, there is still a gap in the archived literature considering nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites targeting water remediation with multiple water pollutants. In this review, methods for synthesizing such composites are classified and compared according to the mechanism of reactions, such as chemical crosslinking and physical adsorption, while outlining advantages and limitations. Then, the water pollutants mainly targeted by those composites are discussed in detail to expound the relationship between the synthesis method and the type and adsorption capacity. Finally, the last section presents challenges and opportunities of these nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites as emerging sorbents for sustainable multiple water pollutants purification technologies. This review aims to lay out the basis for future developments of these composites for multiple water pollutants.

Efficient synthesis of furfurylamine from biomass via a hybrid strategy in an EaCl:Gly–water medium

The objective of this work was to develop an efficient approach for chemoenzymatically transforming biomass to furfurylamine by bridging chemocatalysis and biocatalysis in a deep eutectic solvent of EaCl:Gly–water. Using hydroxyapatite (HAP) as support, heterogeneous catalyst SO42−/SnO2–HAP was synthesized for transforming lignocellulosic biomass into furfural using organic acid as a co-catalyst. The turnover frequency (TOF) was correlated with the pKa value of the used organic acid. Corncob was transformed by oxalic acid (pKa = 1.25) (0.4 wt%) plus SO42−/SnO2–HAP (2.0 wt%) to produce furfural with a yield of 48.2% and a TOF of 6.33 h-1 in water. In deep eutectic solvent EaCl:Gly–water (1:2, v/v), co-catalysis with SO42−/SnO2–HAP and oxalic acid was utilized to transform corncob, rice straw, reed leaf, and sugarcane bagasse for the production of furfural with the yield of 42.4%–59.3% (based on the xylan content) at 180°C after 10 min. The formed furfural could be efficiently aminated to furfurylamine with E. coli CCZU-XLS160 cells in the presence of NH4Cl (as an amine donor). As a result of the biological amination of furfural derived from corncob, rice straw, reed leaf, and sugarcane bagasse for 24 h, the yields of furfurylamine reached &gt;99%, with a productivity of 0.31–0.43 g furfurylamine per g xylan. In EaCl:Gly–water, an efficient chemoenzymatic catalysis strategy was employed to valorize lignocellulosic biomass into valuable furan chemicals.

Solar-driven desalination using salt-rejecting plasmonic cellulose nanofiber membrane

Solar-driven steam generation is a promising, renewable, effective, and environment-friendly technology for desalination and water purification. However, steam generation from seawater causes severe salt formation on the photothermal material, which hinders long-term and large-scale practical applications. In this study, we develop salt-rejecting plasmonic cellulose-based membranes (CMNF-NP) composed of an optimized ratio of Au/Ag nanoparticles, cellulose micro/nanofibers, and polyethyleneimine for efficient solar-driven desalination. The CMNF-NP exhibits a water evaporation rate of 1.31 kg m^-2h^-1 (82.1% of solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency) for distilled water under 1-sun. The CMNF-NP shows a comparable evaporation rate for 3.5 wt% brine, which has been maintained for 10 h; the evaporation rate of the filter paper-based counterpart severely decreases because of salt-scaling. The efficient salt-rejecting capability of the CMNF-NP membrane is attributed to the compact structure and electrostatic repulsion of cationic ions of salt that originate from cellulose nanofibers and the amine-functionalized polymer, polyethyleneimine, as a structural binder. This simple fabrication method of casting the CMNF-NP solution on the substrate followed by drying allows a facile coating of a highly efficient and salt-rejecting photothermal membrane on various practical substrates.

Argon plasma-modified bacterial cellulose filters for protection against respiratory pathogens

In this work, we present novel, sustainable filters based on bacterial cellulose (BC) functionalized with low-pressure argon plasma (LPP-Ar). The "green" production process involved BC biosynthesis by Komagataeibacter xylinus, followed by simple purification, homogenization, lyophilization, and finally LPP-Ar treatment. The obtained LPP-Ar-functionalized BC-based material (LPP-Ar-BC-bM) showed excellent antimicrobial and antiviral properties against both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria, and an enveloped bacteriophage phage Φ6, with no cytotoxicity versus murine fibroblasts in vitro. Further, filters consisting of three layers of LPP-Ar-BC-bM had >99 % bacterial and viral filtration efficiency, while maintaining sufficiently low airflow resistance (6 mbar at an airflow of 95 L/min). Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we were able to prepare 80 masks with LPP-Ar-BC-bM filter and ~85 % of volunteer medical staff assessed them as "good" or "very good" in terms of comfort. We conclude that our novel sustainable, biobased, biodegradable filters are suitable for respiratory personal protective equipment (PPE), such as surgical masks and respirators.

Electrospun hybrid nanofibers: Fabrication, characterization, and biomedical applications

Nanotechnology is one of the most promising technologies available today, holding tremendous potential for biomedical and healthcare applications. In this field, there is an increasing interest in the use of polymeric micro/nanofibers for the construction of biomedical structures. Due to its potential applications in various fields like pharmaceutics and biomedicine, the electrospinning process has gained considerable attention for producing nano-sized fibers. Electrospun nanofiber membranes have been used in drug delivery, controlled drug release, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, biosensing, stent coating, implants, cosmetics, facial masks, and theranostics. Various natural and synthetic polymers have been successfully electrospun into ultrafine fibers. Although biopolymers demonstrate exciting properties such as good biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability, they possess poor mechanical properties. Hybrid nanofibers from bio and synthetic nanofibers combine the characteristics of biopolymers with those of synthetic polymers, such as high mechanical strength and stability. In addition, a variety of functional agents, such as nanoparticles and biomolecules, can be incorporated into nanofibers to create multifunctional hybrid nanofibers. Due to the remarkable properties of hybrid nanofibers, the latest research on the unique properties of hybrid nanofibers is highlighted in this study. Moreover, various established hybrid nanofiber fabrication techniques, especially the electrospinning-based methods, as well as emerging strategies for the characterization of hybrid nanofibers, are summarized. Finally, the development and application of electrospun hybrid nanofibers in biomedical applications are discussed.

Shaping polyelectrolyte composites for heavy metals adsorption from wastewater: Experimental assessment and equilibrium studies

Design of core/shell composite microparticles for loading/release of organic/inorganic pollutants is of great interest in wastewater treatment. As compared to the classic layer-by-layer strategy, the new approach presented in this study introduced higher organic shell amounts in one-pot deposition step, with less material and energy consumption and lack of toxic by-products formation. Herein, one weak polycation (polyethyleneimine) and two weak polyanions were directly deposited onto silica surface through precipitation of an in-situ formed interpolyelectrolyte coacervate, followed by selective crosslinking with glutaraldehyde and extraction of polyanion chains, confirmed by electrokinetic measurements and FTIR spectra of composites. Twelve composite sorbents were synthesized and tested for adsorption of cadmium, as model heavy metal ion. It was demonstrated that the high sorption occurred onto four newly synthesized composites which is correlated to the deposited shell amount, dependent on the deposition method, polyanion nature and crosslinking ratio. The Cd²⁺ sorbed amount increased with the polyelectrolyte deposited amount and with the accessibility toward active sorption site, less cross-linked composite shells sorbing higher amounts as compared to strong cross-linked shells, the molar ratio [active site]:[Cd²⁺] ranging from 16:1 to 26:1. The best fitting of four isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Toth) and four kinetics (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, modified Freundlich and Elovich) models was assessed by the sum of normalized errors, based on different nonlinear regression error functions, and by the Hannah-Quinn information criterion. In general, the best agreement with the experimental data was found for Toth isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Efficient regeneration of the sorbents was possible at least three times. The competitive effect of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ ions was also studied in simulated and real systems. Silica composite sorbents with polyethyleneimine chains as major component of the shell could be very promising in wastewater treatment processes.

The emergence of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as a phytomedicine: A two-facet role in plant growth, nano-toxicity and anti-phyto-microbial activity

Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) has recently emerged as an area of high interest owing to the rapid surge of AMR phenotypes. Metal oxide NPs (MeONPs) have been identified as novel phytomedicine and have recently peaked a lot of interest due to their potential applications in combating phytopathogens, besides enhancing plant growth and yields. Numerous MeONPs (Ti₂O, MgO, CuO, Ag₂O, SiO₂, ZnO, and CaO) have been synthesized and tested to validate their antimicrobial roles without causing toxicity to the cells. This review discusses the application of the MeONPs with special emphasis on anti-microbial activities in agriculture and enlists how cellular toxicity caused through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production affects plant growth, morphology, and viability. This review further highlights the two-facet role of silver and copper oxide NPs including their anti-microbial applications and toxicities. Furthermore, the factor modulating nanotoxicity and immunomodulation for cytokine production has also been discussed. Thus, this article will not only provide the researchers with the potential bottlenecks but also emphasizes a comprehensive outline of breakthroughs in the applicability of MeONPs in agriculture.

Therapeutic Applications of Self-assembled Indole-3-butanoyl-polyethylenimine Nanostructures

This study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of indole-3-butanoyl-polyethylenimine (IBP) nanostructures formed via self-assembly in aqueous system. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis confirmed the formation of the nanostructures in the size range of ~ 194-331 nm. These nanostructures showed commendable antimicrobial activity against wide range of microbes including multi-drug resistant bacteria. Besides, appreciable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were also observed. Results of cytotoxicity studies, performed on normal transformed human embryonic kidney (HEK 293) cells and human red blood cells (hRBCs), revealed almost non-toxic behavior of these nanostructures, however, remarkable toxicity on human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), human osteosarcoma cells (Mg63) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2) was observed. The pre-apoptotic and anti-proliferative activity of IBP nanostructures were confirmed by acridine orange/propidium iodide dual staining assay followed by confocal microscopy and scratch assay on Mg63 cells. Taken together, these results advocate the promising potential of the synthesized IBP nanostructures in the therapeutic applications.

Electrospun Core (HPMC-Acetaminophen)-Shell (PVP-Sucralose) Nanohybrids for Rapid Drug Delivery

The gels of cellulose and its derivatives have a broad and deep application in pharmaceutics; however, limited attention has been paid to the influences of other additives on the gelation processes and their functional performances. In this study, a new type of electrospun core-shell nanohybrid was fabricated using modified, coaxial electrospinning which contained composites of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and acetaminophen (AAP) in the core sections and composites of PVP and sucralose in the shell sections. A series of characterizations demonstrated that the core-shell hybrids had linear morphology with clear core-shell nanostructures, and AAP and sucralose distributed in the core and shell section in an amorphous state separately due to favorable secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Compared with the electrospun HPMC-AAP nanocomposites from single-fluid electrospinning of the core fluid, the core-shell nanohybrids were able to promote the water absorbance and HMPC gelation formation processes, which, in turn, ensured a faster release of AAP for potential orodispersible drug delivery applications. The mechanisms of the drug released from these nanofibers were demonstrated to be a combination of erosion and diffusion mechanisms. The presented protocols pave a way to adjust the properties of electrospun, cellulose-based, fibrous gels for better functional applications.

Catalytic valorization of biomass for furfuryl alcohol by novel deep eutectic solvent-silica chemocatalyst and newly constructed reductase biocatalyst

Chemoenzymatic cascade catalysis using deep eutectic solvent-silica heterogeneous catalyst and reductase biocatalyst was constructed for synthesizing furfuryl alcohol from biomass in one-pot manner. A novel heterogeneous catalyst B:LA-SG(SiO₂) was firstly prepared by immobilizing deep eutectic solvent Betaine:Lactic acid on silica with sol-gel method using tetraethyl orthosilicate as silicon source. High furfural yield (45.3%) was achieved from corncob with B:LA-SG(SiO₂) catalyst (2.5 wt%) in water at 170 ˚C for 0.5 h. Possible catalytic mechanism for converting biomass into furfural was proposed. Moreover, one newly constructed recombinant E. coli KF2021 cells containing formate dehydrogenase and reductase was utilized to transform corncob-valorized furfural into furfuralcohol at 97.7% yield at pH 7.5 and 40 ˚C via HCOONa-driven coenzyme regeneration. Such a hybrid process was constructed for tandem chemocatalysis and biocatalysis in a same reactor, potentially reducing the operation cost, which had potential application for valorization of biomass to value-added furans.

A review on three-dimensional cellulose-based aerogels for the removal of heavy metals from water

Contamination of the aquatic ecosystem by heavy metals is a growing concern that has yet to be addressed with an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly solution. Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth's crust and also result from anthropogenic activities. Due to the rapid increase in industrialization, there is an increase in consumer demands across various industries such as metal processing, mining sector, agricultural activities, etc. and this has led to an increase in heavy metal concentrations in the aqueous environment. Cellulose-based aerogels are a novel third-generation of aerogels that have recently attracted a lot of attention due to their high adsorption efficiency, eco-friendly prospects and cost effectiveness. In this review, recent literature on cellulose-based aerogel adsorbents used for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution has been compiled. The preparation of cellulose-based aerogels, adsorption mechanisms, effects of experimental factors such as pH, temperature, contact time, initial metal concentration and adsorbent dose have been discussed. In addition, cost analysis of cellulose-based adsorbents and some challenges in this research field along with recommendations of improvements have been presented. It can be concluded that functionalizing of cellulose-based aerogels with amine groups, thiol groups, other compounds such as nanobentonite and chitosan results in very high adsorption capacities. The adsorption studies revealed that pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most commonly encountered adsorption kinetic model, and the most commonly encountered adsorption isotherm model was the Langmuir isotherm model. The main adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic interaction, complexation and ion exchange.

Cellulose for the Production of Air-Filtering Systems: A Critical Review

The control of airborne contaminants is of great interest in improving air quality, which has deteriorated more and more in recent years due to strong industrial growth. In the last decades, cellulose has been largely proposed as suitable feedstock to build up eco-friendly materials for a wide range of applications. Herein, the issue regarding the use of cellulose to develop air-filtering systems is addressed. The review covers different cellulose-based solutions, ranging from aerogels and foams to membranes and films, and to composites, considering either particulate filtration (PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and PM_0.3) or gas and water permeation. The proposed solutions were evaluated on the bases of their quality factor (QF), whose high value (at least of 0.01 Pa^-1 referred to commercial HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters) guarantees the best compromise between high filtration efficiency (>99%) and low pressure drop (<1 kPa/g). To face this aspect, we first analyzed the different morphological aspects which can improve the final filtration performance, outlining the importance on using nanofibers not only to increase surface area and to modulate porosity in final solutions, but also as reinforcement of filters made of different materials. Besides the description of technological approaches to improve the mechanical filtration, selected examples show the importance of the chemical interaction, promoted by the introduction of active functional groups on cellulose (nano)fibers backbone, to improve filtration efficiency without reducing filter porosity.

GD, Alexis F, Whitehead DC. Scaled Synthesis of Polyamine-Modified Cellulose Nanocrystals from Bulk Cotton and Their Use for Capturing Volatile Organic Compounds

We have previously demonstrated that cellulose nanocrystals modified with poly(ethylenimine) (PEI-f-CNC) are capable of capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with malodors. In this manuscript, we describe our efforts to develop a scalable synthesis of these materials from bulk cotton. This work culminated in a reliable protocol for the synthesis of unmodified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from bulk cotton on a 0.5 kg scale. Additionally, we developed a protocol for the modification of the CNCs by means of sequential 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) coupling to modify their surface with poly(ethylenimine) on a 100 g scale. Subsequently, we evaluated the performance of the PEI-f-CNC materials that were prepared in a series of VOC capture experiments. First, we demonstrated their efficacy in capturing volatile fatty acids emitted at a rendering plant when formulated as packed-bed filter cartridges. Secondly, we evaluated the potential to use aqueous PEI-f-CNC suspensions as a spray-based delivery method for VOC remediation. In both cases, the PEI-f-CNC formulations reduced detectable malodor VOCs by greater than 90%. The facile scaled synthesis of these materials and their excellent performance at VOC remediation suggest that they may emerge as a useful strategy for the remediation of VOCs associated with odor.

Polypropylene/Lignin/POSS Nanocomposites: Thermal and Wettability Properties, Application in Water Remediation

Compositing is an interesting strategy that has always been employed to introduce or enhance desired functionalities in material systems. In this paper, sponges containing polypropylene, lignin, and octavinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OV-POSS) were successfully prepared via an easy and elegant strategy called thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). To fully explore the behaviour of different components of prepared sponges, properties were characterized by a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared measurement (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, wettability properties toward an organic liquid and oil were investigated. The FTIR analysis confirmed the chemical modification of the components. TGA and DSC measurements revealed thermal stability was much better with an increase in OV-POSS content. OV-POSS modified sponges exhibited ultra-hydrophobicity and high oleophilicity with water contact angles of more than 125°. The SEM revealed that POSS molecules acted as a support for reduced surface roughness. Moreover, OV-POSS-based blend sponges showed higher sorption capacities compared with other blend sponges without OV-POSS. The new blend sponges demonstrated a potential for use as sorbent engineering materials in water remediation.

Virus pH-Dependent Interactions with Cationically Modified Cellulose and Their Application in Water Filtration

Norovirus and Rotavirus are among the pathogens causing a large number of disease outbreaks due to contaminated water. These viruses are nanoscale particles that are difficult to remove by common filtration approaches which are based on physical size exclusion, and require adsorption-based filtration methods. This study reports the pH-responsive interactions of viruses with cationic-modified nanocellulose and demonstrates a filter material that adsorbs nanoscale viruses and can be regenerated by changing the solution's pH. The bacteria viruses Qbeta and MS2, with diameters below 30 nm but different surface properties, are used to evaluate the pH-dependency of the interactions and the filtration process. Small angle X-ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and ζ-potential measurements are used to study the interactions and analyze changes in their nanostructure and surface properties of the virus upon adsorption. The virus removal capacity of the cationic cellulose-based aerogel filter is 99.9% for MS2 and 93.6% for Qbeta, at pH = 7.0; and desorption of mostly intact viruses occurs at pH = 3.0. The results contribute to the fundamental understanding of pH-triggered virus-nanocellulose self-assembly and can guide the design of sustainable and environmentally friendly adsorption-based virus filter materials as well as phage and virus-based materials.

Cellulose-based special wetting materials for oil/water separation: A review

Oil spill accidents and oily wastewater discharged by petrochemical industries have severely wasted water resources and damaged the environment. The use of special wetting materials to separate oil and water is efficient and environment-friendly. Cellulose is the most abundant renewable resource and has natural advantages in removing pollutants from oily wastewater. The application and modification of cellulose as special wetting materials have attracted considerable research attention. Therefore, we summarized cellulose-based superlipophilic/superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials exhibiting special wetting properties for oil/water separation. The treatment mechanism, preparation technology, treatment effect, and representative projects of oil-bearing wastewater are discussed. Moreover, cellulose-based intelligent-responsive materials for application to oil/water separation and the removal of other pollutants from oily wastewater have also been summarized. The prospects and potential challenges of all the materials have been highlighted.

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Cellulose Nanofibres Production Routes from Virgin and Recycled Raw Materials

Nanocellulose-based materials are attracting an increasing interest for the positive role they could play in sustainable development; being originated from renewable resources. Moreover, cellulose has a high potential of recycling from both post-consumer waste and industrial waste. Both factors, i.e., recyclability and renewable resources; results are also extremely favourable in the perspective of circular economy. Despite all these positive aspects, an industrial production has yet to start. At the lab scale, many preparation methods of cellulose nanofibres (CNF) are available; here, the three most common are analysed: (1) enzymatic pre-treatment followed by homogenisation (ENZHO), (2) oxidative pre-treatment combined with homogenisation (TOHO) or (3) oxidative pre-treatment followed by sonication (TOSO). All three processes have been experimentally carried out starting from both virgin and recycled cellulose from industrial waste sludge. The environmental sustainability of these three routes is estimated by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using experimental lab scale data. In this scenario, the comparative LCA has pointed out a superior performance of the ENZHO process, followed by TOHO and, lastly, by TOSO. The influence of energy consumption on the final results has been further investigated by a sensitivity analysis, showing that the TOHO and TOSO routes could reach similar performances by scaling-up the process from the laboratory. The different typology of CNF obtained by conducting the ENZHO process with respect to the TEMPO-mediated oxidation approach is also outlined as an additional element to be considered for the final selection of a suitable process.

2D Correlation Spectroscopy (2DCoS) Analysis of Temperature-Dependent FTIR-ATR Spectra in Branched Polyethyleneimine/TEMPO-Oxidized Cellulose Nano-Fiber Xerogels

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance geometry (FTIR-ATR), combined with a 2D correlation analysis, was here employed to investigate temperature-induced spectral changes occurring in a particular type of novel cellulosic-based nano-material prepared using 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized and ultra-sonicated cellulose nano-fibers (TOUS-CNFs) as three-dimensional scaffolds, and branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) as cross-linking agent. The aim was to highlight the complex sequential events involving the different functional groups of the polymeric network, as well as to gain insight into the interplay between the amount of bPEI and the resulting sponge-like material, upon increasing temperature. In this framework, synchronous and asynchronous 2D spectra were computed and analyzed in three wavenumber regions (900–1200 cm⁻¹, 1500–1700 cm⁻¹ and 2680–3780 cm⁻¹), where specific vibrational modes of the cellulosic structure fall, and over a T-range between 250 K and 340 K. A step-by-step evolution of the different arrangements of the polymer functional groups was proposed, with particular regard to how the cooperativity degree of inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) changes upon heating. Information acquired can be useful, in principle, in order to develop a next-generation, T-sensitive novel material to be used for water remediation applications or for drug-delivery nano-vectors.
