A Highly Sensitive Room Temperature CO2 Gas Sensor Based on SnO2-rGO Hybrid Composite

Exploring MOF-Derived CuO/rGO Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Room Temperature CO2 Sensors

In response to the urgent need for advanced climate change mitigation tools, this study introduces an innovative CO2 gas sensor based on p-p-type heterostructures designed for effective operation at room temperature. This sensor represents a significant step forward, utilizing the synergistic effects of p-p heterojunctions to enhance the effective interfacial area, thereby improving sensitivity. The incorporation of CuO nanoparticles and rGO sheets also optimizes gas transport channels, enhancing the sensor's performance. Our CuO/rGO heterostructures, with 5 wt % rGO, have shown a notable maximum response of 39.6-500 ppm of CO2 at 25 °C, and a low detection limit of 2 ppm, indicating their potential as high-performance, room-temperature CO2 sensors. The prepared sensor demonstrates long-term stability, maintaining 98% of its initial performance over a 30-day period when tested at 1-day intervals. Additionally, the sensor remains stable under conditions of over 40% relative humidity. Furthermore, a first-principles study provides insights into the interaction mechanisms with CO2 molecules, enhancing our understanding of the sensor's operation. This research contributes to the development of CO2 monitoring solutions, offering a practical and cost-effective approach to environmental monitoring in the context of global climate change efforts.

Carbon nanowall-based gas sensors for carbon dioxide gas detection

Carbon nanowalls (CNWs) have attracted significant attention for gas sensing applications due to their exceptional material properties such as large specific surface area, electric conductivity, nano- and/or micro-porous structure, and high charge carrier mobility. In this work, CNW films were synthesized and used to fabricate gas sensors for carbon dioxide (CO2) gas sensing. The CNW films were synthesized using an inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method and their structural and morphological properties were characterized using Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy. The obtained CNW films were used to fabricate gas sensors employing interdigitated gold (Au) microelectrodes. The gas sensors were fabricated using both direct synthesis of CNW films on interdigitated Au microelectrodes on quartz and also transferring presynthesized CNW films onto interdigitated Au microelectrodes on glass. The CO2gas-sensing properties of fabricated devices were investigated for different concentrations of CO2gas and temperature-ranges. The sensitivities of fabricated devices were found to have a linear dependence on the concentration of CO2gas and increase with temperature. It was revealed that devices, in which CNW films have a maze-like structure, perform better compared to the ones that have a petal-like structure. A sensitivity value of 1.18% was obtained at 500 ppm CO2concentration and 100 °C device temperature. The CNW-based gas sensors have the potential for the development of easy-to-manufacture and efficient gas sensors for toxic gas monitoring.

Au/ZnO/In2O3 nanoparticles for enhanced isopropanol gas sensing performance

In this paper, a series of Au/ZnO/In2O3 nanoparticles are synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The gas sensing properties of Au/ZnO/In2O3 materials are investigated in detail. The response of 2%Au/1%ZnO/In2O3 material to isopropanol increases to six times that of pure In2O3 materials. In contrast to a pure In2O3 sensor, the optimal working temperature of the 2%Au/1%ZnO/In2O3 sensor decreases to 40 °C. The sensing mechanism of Au/ZnO/In2O3 nanoparticles is mainly explained through the influence of the n-n heterojunction formed by In2O3 and ZnO. In addition, the introduction of Au contributes to an increase in the gas response. A possible reason is that the introduction of Au produces smaller sized particles on the sensor surface, creating a larger surface area, enhancing the response.

Highly Sensitive Sub-ppm CH3COOH Detection by Improved Assembly of Sn3O4-RGO Nanocomposite

Detection of sub-ppm acetic acid (CH₃COOH) is in demand for environmental gas monitoring. In this article, we propose a CH₃COOH gas sensor based on Sn₃O₄ and reduced graphene oxide (RGO), where the assembly of Sn₃O₄-RGO nanocomposites is dependent on the synthesis method. Three nanocomposites prepared by three different synthesis methods are investigated. The optimum assembly is by hydrothermal reactions of Sn⁴⁺ salts and pre-reduced RGO (designated as RS nanocomposite). Raman spectra verified the fingerprint of RGO in the synthesized RS nanocomposite. The Sn₃O₄ planes of (111), (210), (130), (13¯2) are observed from the X-ray diffractogram, and its average crystallite size is 3.94 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on Sn3d and O1s spectra confirm the stoichiometry of Sn₃O₄ with Sn:O ratio = 0.76. Sn₃O₄-RGO-RS exhibits the highest response of 74% and 4% at 2 and 0.3 ppm, respectively. The sensitivity within sub-ppm CH₃COOH is 64%/ppm. Its superior sensing performance is owing to the embedded and uniformly wrapped Sn₃O₄ nanoparticles on RGO sheets. This allows a massive relative change in electron concentration at the Sn₃O₄-RGO heterojunction during the on/off exposure of CH₃COOH. Additionally, the operation is performed at room temperature, possesses good repeatability, and consumes only ~4 µW, and is a step closer to the development of a commercial CH₃COOH sensor.

Tin Oxide (SnO2)-Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO)-Based Hydroelectric Cells to Generate Large Current

Nonphotocatalytic water splitting through oxygen-deficient, mesoporous metal oxide design-based hydroelectric cells (HECs) is a well-known phenomenon. To exploit more power from HECs, a metal oxide with more oxygen deficiency is desirable. In this study, oxygen-deficient mesoporous SnO2 via a sol-gel method and its composites with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been presented. Raman spectra of SnO2-rGO nanocomposites revealed an increase in the oxygen vacancies, while the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the strain formation in the nanocomposite lattice owing to defect formation. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) results also indicated the presence of oxygen vacancies on the surface of SnO2, whereas Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements revealed that adding rGO into SnO2 increased the surface area from 44.54 to 84.00 m2 g-1. The water molecules are chemidissociated on the oxygen-deficient mesoporous surface of the pellet followed by physiodissociation at the mesopores. The redox reaction of the dissociated ions at the Zn anode and the Ag inert cathode produces current in the outer circuit. Interestingly, adding few drops of water into a SnO2-rGO-based HEC resulted in a short-circuit current of 148 mA with an open-cell voltage of 1.0 V. The maximum power delivered by the SnO2-rGO-based HEC is 148 mW. The addition of rGO into SnO2 boosts the peak current remarkably from 68 to 148 mA, which is the highest reported current generated by a hydroelectric cell.

Heterojunctions of rGO/Metal Oxide Nanocomposites as Promising Gas-Sensing Materials-A Review

Monitoring environmental hazards and pollution control is vital for the detection of harmful toxic gases from industrial activities and natural processes in the environment, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). This is to ensure the preservation of public health and promote workplace safety. Graphene and its derivatives, especially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), have been designated as ideal materials in gas-sensing devices as their electronic properties highly influence the potential to adsorb specified toxic gas molecules. Despite its exceptional sensitivity at low gas concentrations, the sensor selectivity of pristine graphene is relatively weak, which limits its utility in many practical gas sensor applications. In view of this, the hybridization technique through heterojunction configurations of rGO with metal oxides has been explored, which showed promising improvement and a synergistic effect on the gas-sensing capacity, particularly at room temperature sensitivity and selectivity, even at low concentrations of the target gas. The unique features of graphene as a preferential gas sensor material are first highlighted, followed by a brief discussion on the basic working mechanism, fabrication, and performance of hybridized rGO/metal oxide-based gas sensors for various toxic gases, including NO2, NH3, H2, H2S, CO2, and SO2. The challenges and prospects of the graphene/metal oxide-based based gas sensors are presented at the end of the review.

Noise Spectrum as a Source of Information in Gas Sensors Based on Liquid-Phase Exfoliated Graphene

Surfaces of adsorption-based gas sensors are often heterogeneous, with adsorption sites that differ in their affinities for gas particle binding. Knowing adsorption/desorption energies, surface densities and the relative abundance of sites of different types is important, because these parameters impact sensor sensitivity and selectivity, and are relevant for revealing the response-generating mechanisms. We show that the analysis of the noise of adsorption-based sensors can be used to study gas adsorption on heterogeneous sensing surfaces, which is applicable to industrially important liquid-phase exfoliated (LPE) graphene. Our results for CO2 adsorption on an LPE graphene surface, with different types of adsorption sites on graphene flake edges and basal planes, show that the noise spectrum data can be used to characterize such surfaces in terms of parameters that determine the sensing properties of the adsorbing material. Notably, the spectrum characteristic frequencies are an unambiguous indicator of the relative abundance of different types of adsorption sites on the sensing surface and their surface densities. We also demonstrate that spectrum features indicate the fraction of the binding sites that are already occupied by another gas species. The presented study can be applied to the design and production of graphene and other sensing surfaces with an optimal sensing performance.

Solid-Electrolyte Amperometric Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of CO and CO2 in Nitrogen

A solid-state amperometric sensor based on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) for the simultaneous measurement of CO and CO2 concentrations in inert gases was fabricated. The designed sensor consists of two electrically isolated ceramic cells made of YSZ and equipped with Pt electrodes. Ceramic capillaries connecting an inner gas chamber of each cell with the outside atmosphere serve as diffusion barriers. One of the cells is intended for sensing CO, whereas the other is for sensing CO2 in the gaseous atmosphere. The electrochemical response of the sensor was studied in the temperature range of 600–750 °C in the presence of up to 10% of CO and CO2 in nitrogen. The limiting currents of the two cells were shown to rise linearly with the relevant carbon oxide concentration, and no perceptible cross-sensitivity effect toward the other carbon oxide was found. The sensor demonstrated high stability and reproducibility of results and good dynamic characteristics. The novelty of this research lies in the development of a simple, reliable and fast solid-oxide sensor for simultaneous sensing of CO and CO2 in inert gases, which can be used for the control of atmosphere in, for example, pharmaceutical, chemical, food storage industries.

Copper Oxide/Functionalized Graphene Hybrid Nanostructures for Room Temperature Gas Sensing Applications

Oxide semiconductors are conventionally used as sensing materials in gas sensors, however, there are limitations on the detection of gases at room temperature (RT). In this work, a hybrid of copper oxide (CuO) with functionalized graphene (rGO) is proposed to achieve gas sensing at RT. The combination of a high surface area and the presence of many functional groups in the CuO/rGO hybrid material makes it highly sensitive for gas absorption and desorption. To prepare the hybrid material, a copper oxide suspension synthesized using a copper acetate precursor is added to a graphene oxide solution during its reduction using ascorbic acid. Material properties of the CuO/rGO hybrid and its drop-casted thin-films are investigated using Raman, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and four-point probe measurement systems. We found that the hybrid material was enriched with oxygen functional groups (OFGs) and defective sites, along with good electrical conductivity (Sheet resistance~1.5 kΩ/□). The fabricated QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) sensor with a thin layer of the CuO/rGO hybrid demonstrated a high sensing response which was twice the response of the rGO-based sensor for CO2 gas at RT. We believe that the CuO/rGO hybrid is highly suitable for existing and future gas sensors used for domestic and industrial safety.

Carbon Dioxide Sensing with Langmuir–Blodgett Graphene Films

Graphene has become a material of choice for an increasing number of scientific and industrial applications. It has been used for gas sensing due to its favorable properties, such as a large specific surface area, as well as the sensitivity of its electrical parameters to adsorption processes occurring on its surface. Efforts are ongoing to produce graphene gas sensors by using methods that are compatible with scaling, simple deposition techniques on arbitrary substrates, and ease of use. In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication of carbon dioxide gas sensors from Langmuir–Blodgett thin films of sulfonated polyaniline-functionalized graphene that was obtained by using electrochemical exfoliation. The sensor was tested within the highly relevant concentration range of 150 to 10,000 ppm and 0% to 100% at room temperature (15 to 35 °C). The results show that the sensor has both high sensitivity to low analyte concentrations and high dynamic range. The sensor response times are approximately 15 s. The fabrication method is simple, scalable, and compatible with arbitrary substrates, which makes it potentially interesting for many practical applications. The sensor is used for real-time carbon dioxide concentration monitoring based on a theoretical model matched to our experimental data. The sensor performance was unchanged over a period of several months.

Fabrication of ZnO/CNTs for Application in CO2 Sensor at Room Temperature

Thin films of ZnO and ZnO/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are prepared and used as CO2 gas sensors. The spray pyrolysis method was used to prepare both ZnO and ZnO/CNTs films, with CNTs first prepared using the chemical vapor deposition method (CVD). The chemical structure and optical analyses for all the prepared nanomaterials were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV/Vis spectrophotometer devices, respectively. According to the XRD analysis, the crystal sizes of ZnO and ZnO/CNTs were approximately 50.4 and 65.2 nm, respectively. CNTs have average inner and outer diameters of about 3 and 13 nm respectively, according to the transmitted electron microscope (TEM), and a wall thickness of about 5 nm. The detection of CO2 is accomplished by passing varying rates of the gas from 30 to 150 sccm over the prepared thin-film electrodes. At 150 sccm, the sensitivities of ZnO and ZnO/CNTs sensors are 6.8% and 22.4%, respectively. The ZnO/CNTs sensor has a very stable sensitivity to CO2 gas for 21 days. Moreover, this sensor has a high selectivity to CO2 in comparison with other gases, in which the ZnO/CNTs sensor has a higher sensitivity to CO2 compared to H2 and C2H2.
