Ultrafine-Grained Ti-31Mo-Type Composites with HA and Ag, Ta2O5 or CeO2 Addition for Implant Applications

[Study on NaOH improving the surface morphology of three-dimensional printed poly- L- lactic acid mesh scaffolds]

Objective

To explore the effect of NaOH on the surface morphology of three-dimensional (3D) printed poly- L-lactic acid (PLLA) mesh scaffolds.

Methods

The 3D printed PLLA mesh scaffolds were prepared by fused deposition molding technology, then the scaffold surfaces were etched with the NaOH solution. The concentrations of NaOH solution were 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 mol/L, and the treatment time was 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours, respectively. There were a total of 25 concentration and time combinations. After treatment, the microstructure, energy spectrum, roughness, hydrophilicity, compressive strength, as well as cell adhesion and proliferation of the scaffolds were observed. The untreated scaffolds were used as a normal control.

Results

3D printed PLLA mesh scaffolds were successfully prepared by using fused deposition molding technology. After NaOH etching treatment, a rough or micro porous structure was constructed on the surface of the scaffold, and with the increase of NaOH concentration and treatment time, the size and density of the pores increased. The characterization of the scaffolds by energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that the crystal contains two elements, Na and O. The surface roughness of NaOH treated scaffolds significantly increased ( P<0.05) and the contact angle significantly decreased ( P<0.05) compared to untreated scaffolds. There was no significant difference in compressive strength between the untreated scaffolds and treated scaffolds under conditions of 0.1 mol/L/12 h and 1.0 mol/L/3 h ( P>0.05), while the compression strength of the other treated scaffolds were significantly lower than that of the untreated scaffolds ( P<0.05). After co-culturing the cells with the scaffold, NaOH treatment resulted in an increase in the number of cells on the surface of the scaffold and the spreading area of individual cells, and more synapses extending from adherent cells.

Conclusion

NaOH treatment is beneficial for increasing the surface hydrophilicity and cell adhesion of 3D printed PLLA mesh scaffolds.

Photocatalytic and Electrocatalytic Properties of Cu-Loaded ZIF-67-Derivatized Bean Sprout-Like Co-TiO2/Ti Nanostructures

ZIF-derivatized catalysts have shown high potential in catalysis. Herein, bean sprout-like Co-TiO2/Ti nanostructures were first synthesized by thermal treatment at 800 °C under Ar-flow conditions using sacrificial ZIF-67 templated on Ti sheets. It was observed that ZIF-67 on Ti sheets started to thermally decompose at around 350 °C and was converted to the cubic phase Co3O4. The head of the bean sprout structure was observed to be Co3O4, while the stem showed a crystal structure of rutile TiO2 grown from the metallic Ti support. Cu sputter-deposited Co-TiO2/Ti nanostructures were also prepared for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction performances, as well as electrochemical oxygen reaction (OER). Gas chromatography results after photocatalytic CO2 reduction showed that CH3OH, CO and CH4 were produced as major products with the highest MeOH selectivity of 64% and minor C2 compounds of C2H2, C2H4 and C2H6. For electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, CO, CH4 and C2H4 were meaningfully detected, but H2 was dominantly produced. The amounts were observed to be dependent on the Cu deposition amount. Electrochemical OER performances in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte exhibited onset overpotentials of 330-430 mV (vs. RHE) and Tafel slopes of 117-134 mV/dec that were dependent on Cu-loading thickness. The present unique results provide useful information for synthesis of bean sprout-like Co-TiO2/Ti hybrid nanostructures and their applications to CO2 reduction and electrochemical water splitting in energy and environmental fields.

Tailoring a Low Young Modulus for a Beta Titanium Alloy by Combining Severe Plastic Deformation with Solution Treatment

The present paper analyzed the microstructural characteristics and the mechanical properties of a Ti-Nb-Zr-Fe-O alloy of β-Ti type obtained by combining severe plastic deformation (SPD), for which the total reduction was of ε_tot = 90%, with two variants of super-transus solution treatment (ST). The objective was to obtain a low Young's modulus with sufficient high strength in purpose to use the alloy as a biomaterial for orthopedic implants. The microstructure analysis was conducted through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) investigations. The analyzed mechanical properties reveal promising values for yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of about 770 and 1100 MPa, respectively, with a low value of Young's modulus of about 48-49 GPa. The conclusion is that satisfactory mechanical properties for this type of alloy can be obtained if considering a proper combination of SPD + ST parameters and a suitable content of β-stabilizing alloying elements, especially the Zr/Nb ratio.
