Recent Progress in the Synthesis of MoS2 Thin Films for Sensing, Photovoltaic and Plasmonic Applications: A Review

Vertical heterostructure of graphite-MoS2 for gas sensing

2D materials, given their form-factor, high surface-to-volume ratio, and chemical functionality have immense use in sensor design. Engineering 2D heterostructures can result in robust combinations of desirable properties but sensor design methodologies require careful considerations about material properties and orientation to maximize sensor response. This study introduces a sensor approach that combines the excellent electrical transport and transduction properties of graphite film with chemical reactivity derived from the edge sites of semiconducting molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) through a two-step chemical vapour deposition method. The resulting vertical heterostructure shows potential for high-performance hybrid chemiresistors for gas sensing. This architecture offers active sensing edge sites across the MoS2 flakes. We detail the growth of vertically oriented MoS2 over a nanoscale graphite film (NGF) cross-section, enhancing the adsorption of analytes such as NO2, NH3, and water vapor. Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations and scanning probe methods elucidate the influence of chemical doping by distinguishing the role of MoS2 edge sites relative to the basal plane. High-resolution imaging techniques confirm the controlled growth of highly crystalline hybrid structures. The MoS2/NGF hybrid structure exhibits exceptional chemiresistive responses at both room and elevated temperatures compared to bare graphitic layers. Quantitative analysis reveals that the sensitivity of this hybrid sensor surpasses other 2D material hybrids, particularly in parts per billion concentrations.

Piezoelectric catalytic driven advanced oxidation process using two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides for wastewater pollutants remediation

The public and society have increasingly recognized numerous grave environmental issues, including water pollution, attributed to the rapid expansion of industrialization and agriculture. Renewable energy-driven catalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent a green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach to meet the demands of environmental remediation. In this context, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) piezoelectric materials, with their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, exhibit unique features. They create dipole polarization, inducing a built-in electric field that generates polarized holes and electrons and triggers redox reactions, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species for wastewater pollutant remediation. A broad spectrum of 2D TMDCs piezoelectric materials have been explored in self-integrated Fenton-like processes and persulfate activation processes. These materials offer a more simplistic and practical method than traditional approaches. Consequently, this review highlights recent advancements in 2D TMDCs piezoelectric catalysts and their roles in wastewater pollutant remediation through piezocatalytic-driven AOPs, such as Fenton-like processes and sulfate radicals-based oxidation processes.

Recent Advances in Molybdenum Disulfide and Its Nanocomposites for Energy Applications: Challenges and Development

Energy storage and conversion are critical components of modern energy systems, enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and the optimization of energy use. These technologies play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development. Supercapacitors play a vital role in the development of energy storage systems due to their high power density, long life cycles, high stability, low manufacturing cost, fast charging-discharging capability and eco-friendly. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has emerged as a promising material for supercapacitor electrodes due to its high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and good stability. Its unique layered structure also allows for efficient ion transport and storage, making it a potential candidate for high-performance energy storage devices. Additionally, research efforts have focused on improving synthesis methods and developing novel device architectures to enhance the performance of MoS₂-based devices. This review article on MoS₂ and MoS₂-based nanocomposites provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in the synthesis, properties, and applications of MoS₂ and its nanocomposites in the field of supercapacitors. This article also highlights the challenges and future directions in this rapidly growing field.

One-step chemically vapor deposited hybrid 1T-MoS2/2H-MoS2 heterostructures towards methylene blue photodegradation

The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue is a straightforward and cost-effective solution for water decontamination. Although many materials have been reported so far for this purpose, the proposed solutions inflicted high fabrication costs and low efficiencies. Here, we report on the synthesis of tetragonal (1T) and hexagonal (2H) mixed molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) heterostructures for an improved photocatalytic degradation efficiency by means of a single-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. We demonstrate that the 1T-MoS2/2H-MoS2 heterostructures exhibited a narrow bandgap ∼ 1.7 eV, and a very low reflectance (<5%) under visible-light, owing to their particular vertical micro-flower-like structure. We exfoliated the CVD-synthesised 1T-MoS2/2H-MoS2 films to assess their photodegradation properties towards the standard methylene blue dye. Our results showed that the photo-degradation rate-constant of the 1T-MoS2/2H-MoS2 heterostructures is much greater under UV excitation (i.e., 12.5 × 10-3 min-1) than under visible light illumination (i.e., 9.2 × 10-3 min-1). Our findings suggested that the intermixing of the conductive 1T-MoS2 with the semi-conducting 2H-MoS2 phases favors the photogeneration of electron-hole pairs. More importantly, it promotes a higher efficient charge transfer, which accelerates the methylene blue photodegradation process.

Touhidul Islam AZ. Performance Enhancement of an MoS2-Based Heterojunction Solar Cell with an In2Te3 Back Surface Field: A Numerical Simulation Approach

Researchers are currently showing interest in molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂)-based solar cells due to their remarkable semiconducting characteristics. The incompatibility of the band structures at the BSF/absorber and absorber/buffer interfaces, as well as carrier recombination at the rear and front metal contacts, prevents the expected result from being achieved. The main purpose of this work is to enhance the performance of the newly proposed Al/ITO/TiO₂/MoS₂/In₂Te₃/Ni solar cell and investigate the impacts of the In₂Te₃ BSF and TiO₂ buffer layer on the performance parameters of open-circuit voltage (V _OC), short-circuit current density (J _SC), fill factor (FF), and power conversion efficiency (PCE). This research has been performed by utilizing SCAPS simulation software. The performance parameters such as variation of thickness, carrier concentration, the bulk defect concentration of each layer, interface defect, operating temperature, capacitance-voltage (C-V), surface recombination velocity, and front as well as rear electrodes have been analyzed to achieve a better performance. This device performs exceptionally well at lower carrier concentrations (1 × 10¹⁶ cm^-3) in a thin (800 nm) MoS₂ absorber layer. The PCE, V _OC, J _SC, and FF values of the Al/ITO/TiO₂/MoS₂/Ni reference cell have been estimated to be 22.30%, 0.793 V, 30.89 mA/cm², and 80.62% respectively, while the PCE, V _OC, J _SC, and FF values have been determined to be 33.32%, 1.084 V, 37.22 mA/cm², and 82.58% for the Al/ITO/TiO₂/MoS₂/In₂Te₃/Ni proposed solar cell by introducing In₂Te₃ between the absorber (MoS₂) and the rear electrode (Ni). The proposed research may give an insight and a feasible way to realize a cost-effective MoS₂-based thin-film solar cell.

Recent Progress in Plasmonic based Electrochemiluminescence Biosensors: A Review

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis has become a powerful tool in recent biomarker detection and clinic diagnosis due to its high sensitivity and broad linear range. To improve the analytical performance of ECL biosensors, various advanced nanomaterials have been introduced to regulate the ECL signal such as graphene, gold nanomaterials, and quantum dots. Among these nanomaterials, some plasmonic nanostructures play important roles in the fabrication of ECL biosensors. The plasmon effect for the ECL signal includes ECL quenching by resonant energy transfer, ECL enhancement by surface plasmon resonance enhancement, and a change in the polarized angle of ECL emission. The influence can be regulated by the distance between ECL emitters and plasmonic materials, and the characteristics of polarization angle-dependent surface plasmon coupling. This paper outlines the recent advances of plasmonic based ECL biosensors involving various plasmonic materials including noble metals and semiconductor nanomaterials. The detection targets in these biosensors range from small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells thanks to the plasmonic effect. In addition to ECL biosensors, ECL microscopy analysis with plasmonic materials is also highlighted because of the enhanced ECL image quality by the plasmonic effect. Finally, the future opportunities and challenges are discussed if more plasmonic effects are introduced into the ECL realm.

Photodetection Properties of MoS2, WS2 and MoxW1-xS2 Heterostructure: A Comparative Study

Layered transition metals dichalcogenides such as MoS₂ and WS₂ have shown a tunable bandgap, making them highly desirable for optoelectronic applications. Here, we report on one-step chemical vapor deposited MoS₂, WS₂ and Mo_xW_1-xS₂ heterostructures incorporated into photoconductive devices to be examined and compared in view of their use as potential photodetectors. Vertically aligned MoS₂ nanosheets and horizontally stacked WS₂ layers, and their heterostructure form Mo_xW_1-xS₂, exhibit direct and indirect bandgap, respectively. To analyze these structures, various characterization methods were used to elucidate their properties including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. While all the investigated samples show a photoresponse in a broad wavelength range between 400 nm and 700 nm, the vertical MoS₂ nanosheets sample exhibits the highest performances at a low bias voltage of 5 V. Our findings demonstrate a responsivity and a specific detectivity of 47.4 mA W^-1 and 1.4 × 10¹¹ Jones, respectively, achieved by Mo_xW_1-xS₂. This study offers insights into the use of a facile elaboration technique for tuning the performance of Mo_xW_1-xS₂ heterostructure-based photodetectors.

Broadband photodetection using one-step CVD-fabricated MoS2/MoO2 microflower/microfiber heterostructures

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has been combined so far with other photodetecting semiconductors as an enhancing agent owing to its optical and electronic properties. Existing approaches demonstrated MoS₂-incorporated photodetector devices using complex and costly fabrication processes. Here, we report on simplified one-step on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) based synthesis of a unique microfiber/microflower MoS₂-based heterostructure formed by capturing MoO₂ intermediate material during the CVD process. This particular morphology engenders a material chemical and electronic interplay exalting the heterostructure absorption up to ~ 98% over a large spectral range between 200 and 1500 nm. An arsenal of characterization methods were used to elucidate the properties of these novel heterostructures including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, high-resolution transmission and scanning electron microscopies, and Kelvin probe force microscopy. Our findings revealed that the MoS₂ and the MoO₂ crystallize in the hexagonal and monoclinic lattices, respectively. The integration of the MoS₂/MoO₂ heterostructures into functional photodetectors revealed a strong photoresponse under both standard sun illumination AM1.5G and blue light excitation at 450 nm. Responsivity and detectivity values as high as 0.75 mA W^-1 and 1.45 × 10⁷ Jones, respectively, were obtained with the lowest light intensity of 20 mW cm^-2 at only 1 V bias. These results demonstrate the high performances achieved by the unique MoS₂/MoO₂ heterostructure for broadband light harvesting and pave the way for their adoption in photodetection applications.

Pulsed Laser Phosphorus Doping and Nanocomposite Catalysts Deposition in Forming a-MoSx/NP-Mo//n+p-Si Photocathodes for Efficient Solar Hydrogen Production

Pulsed laser deposition of nanostructured molybdenum sulfide films creates specific nonequilibrium growth conditions, which improve the electrocatalytic properties of the films in a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The enhanced catalytic performance of the amorphous a-MoS_x (2 ≤ x ≤ 3) matrix is due to the synergistic effect of the Mo nanoparticles (Mo-NP) formed during the laser ablation of a MoS₂ target. This work looks at the possibility of employing a-MoS_x/NP-Mo films (4 and 20 nm thickness) to produce hydrogen by photo-stimulated HER using a p-Si cathode. A simple technique of pulsed laser p-Si doping with phosphorus was used to form an n⁺p-junction. Investigations of the energy band arrangement at the interface between a-MoS_x/NP-Mo and n⁺-Si showed that the photo-HER on an a-MoS_x/NP-Mo//n⁺p-Si photocathode with a 20 nm thick catalytic film proceeded according to a Z-scheme. The thickness of interfacial SiO_y(P) nanolayer varied little in photo-HER without interfering with the effective electric current across the interface. The a-MoS_x/NP-Mo//n⁺p-Si photocathode showed good long-term durability; its onset potential was 390 mV and photocurrent density was at 0 V was 28.7 mA/cm². The a-MoS_x/NP-Mo//n⁺p-Si photocathodes and their laser-based production technique offer a promising pathway toward sustainable solar hydrogen production.

Electrostatic control of photoluminescence from A and B excitons in monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Tailoring excitonic photoluminescence (PL) in molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) is critical for its various applications. Although significant efforts have been devoted to enhancing the PL intensity of monolayer MoS₂, simultaneous tailoring of emission from both A excitons and B excitons remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that both A-excitonic and B-excitonic PL of chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown monolayer MoS₂ can be tuned by electrostatic doping in air. Our results indicate that the B-excitonic PL changed in the opposite direction compared to A-excitonic PL when a gate voltage (V _g) was applied, both in S-rich and Mo-rich monolayer MoS₂. Through the combination of gas adsorption and electrostatic doping, a 12-fold enhancement of the PL intensity for A excitons in Mo-rich monolayer MoS₂ was achieved at V _g = -40 V, and a 26-fold enhancement for the ratio of B/A excitonic PL was observed at V _g = +40 V. Our results demonstrate not only the control of the conversion between A⁰ and A^-, but also the modulation of intravalley and intervalley conversion between A excitons and B excitons. With electrostatic electron doping, the population of B excitons can be promoted due to the enhanced intravalley and intervalley transition process through electron-phonon coupling. The electrostatic control of excitonic PL has potential applications in exciton physics and valleytronics involving the B excitons.

Graphene and g-C3N4-Based Gas Sensors

The efficient monitoring of the environment is currently gaining a continuous growing interest in view of finding solutions for the global pollution issues and their associated climate change. In this sense, two-dimensional (2D) materials appear as one of highly attractive routes for the development of efficient sensing devices due, in particular, to the interesting blend of their superlative properties. For instance, graphene (Gr) and graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 (g-CN) have specifically attracted great attention in several domains of sensing applications owing to their excellent electronic and physical-chemical properties. Despite the high potential they offer in the development and fabrication of high-performance gas-sensing devices, an exhaustive comparison between Gr and g-CN is not well established yet regarding their electronic properties and their sensing performances such as sensitivity and selectivity. Hence, this work aims at providing a state-of-the-art overview of the latest experimental advances in the fabrication, characterization, development, and implementation of these 2D materials in gas-sensing applications. Then, the reported results are compared to our numerical simulations using density functional theory carried out on the interactions of Gr and g-CN with some selected hazardous gases’ molecules such as NO2, CO2, and HF. Our findings conform with the superior performances of the g-CN regarding HF detection, while both g-CN and Gr show comparable detection performances for the remaining considered gases. This allows suggesting an outlook regarding the future use of these 2D materials as high-performance gas sensors.

A Review on Chemical Vapour Deposition of Two-Dimensional MoS2 Flakes

Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and boron nitride have recently emerged as promising candidates for novel applications in sensing and for new electronic and photonic devices. Their exceptional mechanical, electronic, optical, and transport properties show peculiar differences from those of their bulk counterparts and may allow for future radical innovation breakthroughs in different applications. Control and reproducibility of synthesis are two essential, key factors required to drive the development of 2D materials, because their industrial application is directly linked to the development of a high-throughput and reliable technique to obtain 2D layers of different materials on large area substrates. Among various methods, chemical vapour deposition is considered an excellent candidate for this goal thanks to its simplicity, widespread use, and compatibility with other processes used to deposit other semiconductors. In this review, we explore the chemical vapour deposition of MoS2, considered one of the most promising and successful transition metal dichalcogenides. We summarize the basics of the synthesis procedure, discussing in depth: (i) the different substrates used for its deposition, (ii) precursors (solid, liquid, gaseous) available, and (iii) different types of promoters that favour the growth of two-dimensional layers. We also present a comprehensive analysis of the status of the research on the growth mechanisms of the flakes.
