Influence of the Halloysite Nanotube (HNT) Addition on Selected Mechanical and Biological Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Mechanical and Shape Memory Properties of Additively Manufactured Polyurethane (PU)/Halloysite Nanotube (HNT) Nanocomposites

This paper investigates the impact of halloysite nanotube (HNT) content on mechanical and shape memory properties of additively manufactured polyurethane (PU)/HNT nanocomposites. The inclusion of 8 wt% HNTs increases their tensile strength by 30.4% when compared with that of virgin PU at 44.75 MPa. Furthermore, consistently significant increases in tensile modulus, compressive strength and modulus, as well as specific energy absorption are also manifested by 47.2%, 34.0%, 125% and 72.7% relative to neat PU at 2.29 GPa, 3.88 MPa, 0.28 GPa and 0.44 kJ/kg respectively. However, increasing HNT content reduces lateral strain due to the restricted mobility of polymeric chains, leading to a decrease in negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). As such, shape recovery ratio and time of PU/HNT nanocomposites are reduced by 9 and 45% with the inclusion of 10 wt% HNTs despite an increasing shape fixity ratio up to 12% relative to those of neat PU.

Co-Influence of Nanofiller Content and 3D Printing Parameters on Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)/Halloysite Nanotube (HNT) Nanocomposites

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) belongs to a polyurethane family that possesses an elongation much higher than 300%, despite having low mechanical strength, which can be overcome by incorporating clay-based halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as additives to manufacture TPU/HNT nanocomposites. This paper focuses on the co-influence of HNT content and 3D printing parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D printed TPU/HNT nanocomposites in terms of tensile properties, hardness, and abrasion resistance via fused deposition modelling (FDM). The optimum factor-level combination for different responses was determined with the aid of robust statistical Taguchi design of experiments (DoEs). Material characterisation was also carried out to evaluate the surface morphology, nanofiller dispersion, chemical structure, thermal stability, and phase behaviour corresponding to the DoE results obtained. It is evidently shown that HNT level and infill density play a significant role in impacting mechanical properties of 3D-printed TPU/HNT nanocomposites.

Prediction of Selected Mechanical Properties of Polymer Composites with Alumina Modifiers

Forecasting is one of the cognitive methods based on empirical knowledge supported by appropriate modeling methods that give information about the way the relations between factors and how the phenomenon under study will develop in the future. In this article, a selection is made of a suitable architecture for a predictive model for a set of data obtained during testing of the properties of polymer composites with a matrix in the form of epoxy resin with trade name L285 (Havel Composites) with H285 MGS hardener (Havel Composites), and with the addition of the physical modifier noble alumina with mass percentages of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% for the following grain sizes: F220, F240, F280, F320, F360, respectively. In order to select the optimal architecture for the predictive model, the results of the study were tested on five types of predictive model architectures results were tested on five types of prediction model architectures, with five-fold validation, including the mean square error (MSE) metric and R2 determined for Young’s modulus (Et), maximum stress (σm), maximum strain (εm) and Shore D hardness (⁰Sh). Based on the values from the forecasts and the values from the empirical studies, it was found that in 63 cases the forecast should be considered very accurate (this represents 63% of the forecasts that were compared with the experimental results), while 15 forecasts can be described as accurate (15% of the forecasts that were compared with the experimental results). In 20 cases, the MPE value indicated the classification of the forecast as acceptable. As can be seen, only for two forecasts the MPE error takes values classifying them to unacceptable forecasts (2% of forecasts generated for verifiable cases based on experimental results).

Dynamic Behavior of Aviation Polymer Composites at Various Weight Fractions of Physical Modifier

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a selected physical modifier with different granularity and mass percentage on the dynamics of aerospace polymer composites. The tests were carried out on samples made of certified aerospace materials used, among other purposes, for the manufacture of aircraft skin components. The hybrid composites were prepared from L285 resin, H286 hardener, GG 280T carbon fabric in twill 2/2 and alumina (Al₂O₃, designated as EA in this work). The manufactured composites contained alumina with grain sizes of F220, F240, F280, F320 and F360. The mass proportion of the modifier in the tested samples was 5% and 15%. The tested specimens, as cantilever beams fixed unilaterally, were subjected to kinematic excitation with defined parameters of amplitude and frequency excitation in the basic resonance zone of the structure. The results, obtained as dynamic responses, are presented in the form of amplitude-frequency characteristics. These relationships clearly indicate the variable nature of composite materials due to modifier density and grain size. The novelty of this study is the investigation of the influence of the alumina properties on system dynamics responses.

The Influence of 3D Printing Parameters on Adhesion between Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)

A 3D printer in FDM technology allows printing with two nozzles, which creates an opportunity to produce multi-material elements. Printing from two materials requires special consideration of the interface zone generated between their geometrical boundaries. This article aims to present the possibility of printing with PLA and TPU using commercially available filaments and software to obtain the best possible bond strength between two different polymers with respect to printing parameters, surface pattern (due to the material contact surface’s roughness), and the order of layer application. The interaction at the interface of two surfaces of two different filaments (PLA-TPU and TPU-PLA) and six combinations of patterns were tested by printing seven replicas for each. A total of 12 combinations were obtained. By analyzing pairs of samples (the same patterns, different order of materials), the results for the TPU/PLA samples were better or very close to the results for PLA/TPU. The best variants of pattern combinations were distinguished. Well-chosen printing parameters can prevent a drop in parts efficiency compared to component materials (depending on the materials combination).

Removal of Ammonium Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Weathered Halloysite

This study investigated the use of weathered halloysite as an ion exchange material for ammonium removal from water. The study was conducted under static and dynamic conditions. The influence of such parameters as the preliminary concentration of ammonium ions, dose of halloysite, and pH was examined in periodic studies. The ion exchange capacity of weathered halloysite under various regeneration conditions such as concentration, excess of regeneration solution and the pH at which the regeneration was performed was also determined. The effect of flow velocity, initial NH₄⁺-ions concentration was studied in column tests and the weathered halloysite’s ion -exchange capacity was also determined. The best results of ammonium ion removal were obtained at pH 6. The equilibrium isotherms were described using the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results of periodic studies show a good fit for the data of both models, with Langmuir isotherms reflecting the removal of ammonium ions better. A good match for the data (R² > 0.99) was provided by a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The obtained results indicate that a properly prepared halloysite can be a useful mineral for the removal of dangerous substances, such as ammonium ions, present in natural waters.
