Abstract
Ten new compounds based on the methineazo-azomethine (CH=N-N=CH) and ester linking groups were prepared and investigated for their mesophase behavior and optical stability, and liquid crystals of 4-substituted phenyl methineazo-azomethine phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoates, I n a-e , were investigated. An alkoxy group with a length between 8 and 12 carbons is attached to the phenyl eater wing, while the other terminal ring is substituted in its 4-position with one of the polar NO2, F, Cl, CH3O, and N(CH3)2 groups. The molecular structures of the newly prepared compounds were verified by using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and elemental analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy were applied to investigate their mesophase behavior. All members of the prepared homologous series showed excellent thermal mesomorphic stability over wide temperature ranges. The geometrical and thermal properties of the investigated compounds were verified via density functional theory (DFT). The theoretical results revealed that all of the compounds are almost planar. Finally, the experimentally established values of the mesophase data were correlated with the predicted quantum chemical characteristics evaluated by DFT.

Abstract
Two Schiff bases, (E)-4-((2-chlorobenzylidene)amino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (4AAPOCB) and (E)-4-((4-chlorobenzylidene)amino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (4AAPPCB), have been synthesized and grown as single crystals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was employed to determine the crystal structure of the compounds, and the results suggest that the compounds crystallized into an orthorhombic crystal system having P212121 and Pbca space groups, respectively. Further, the crystallinity of the compounds was analyzed by the PXRD technique. The UV-vis-NIR spectra of the compounds demonstrate excellent transmittance in the entire visible region. The lower cutoff wavelengths of the compounds were determined to be 338 and 333 nm, respectively; additionally, optical band gaps of the compounds found were 4.60 and 4.35 eV. FTIR and NMR (1H and 13C) spectral techniques were utilized to analyze the molecular structure of the compounds. The compounds emit photoluminescence with broad emission bands with centers at 401 and 418 nm. The thermal stability and phase transitions were assessed through thermogravimetric methods. The phase transition prior to melting was indicated by the endothermic event at around 190 °C in the DTA curves of both crystals, and the same was observed in the DSC curves. The second harmonic efficiencies of the powdered compounds I and II were found to be 3.52 and 1.13 times better than that of the standard reference KDP. The 4AAPOCB and 4AAPPCB compounds showed isotropic polarizability amplitudes of 46.02 × 10-24 and 46.52 × 10-24 esu, respectively. The calculation of linear polarizability and NLO second-order polarizability (β) along with other optical parameters was performed for optimized geometries. The nonzero amplitudes of the average β values for compounds 4AAPOCB and 4AAPPCB were found to be 14.74 × 10-30 and 8.10 × 10-30 esu, respectively, which show a decent potential of the synthesized molecules for NLO applications. The calculated β amplitudes were further explained based on calculated electronic parameters like molecular electrostatic potentials, frontier molecular orbitals, molecular orbital energies, transition energies, oscillator strengths, and unit spherical representation of NLO polarizability. The current analysis emphasizes the significance of synthesized compounds as prospective candidates for optical and NLO applications through the use of experiments and quantum computations.

Abstract
Three rings 2-hydroxypyridine liquid crystalline compounds have been prepared and fully characterized. The mesomorphic behavior of the prepared compounds has been investigated in terms of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Moreover, a comparative study between the prepared compounds and previously reported analogs has been discussed in terms of the orientation and position of the mesogenic core, in addition to the direction of the terminal alkyl chains. Furthermore, a detailed computational approach has been studied to illustrate the effect of geometrical and dimensional parameters on the type of the enhanced texture and the mesomorphic range and stability. The results of the DFT study revealed that the orientation of the mesogen could affect the mesomorphic behavior and this has been attributed in terms of the degree of the polarizability of the linking groups. This result has been confirmed by calculation of the net dipole moment and the molecular electrostatic potential that show how the mesogen orientation and position could impact the molecular charge separation. Finally, the effect of the pyridyl group has been also investigated in terms of the calculated aromaticity index and the π-π stacking.

Abstract
Schiff bases represent an essential class in organic chemistry with antitumor, antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial activities. The synthesis of Schiff bases requires the presence of an organic base as a catalyst such as piperidine. Base-free synthesis of organic compounds using a heterogeneous catalyst has recently attracted more interest due to the facile procedure, high yield, and reusability of the used catalyst. Herein, we present a comparative study to synthesize new Schiff bases containing indole moieties using piperidine as an organic base catalyst and Au@TiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst. In both methods, the products were isolated in high yields and fully characterized using different spectral analysis techniques. The catalyst was reusable four times, and the activity was slightly decreased. The presence of Au increases the number of acidic sites of TiO2, resulting in C=O polarization. Yields of the prepared Schiff bases in the presence of Au@TiO2 and piperidine were comparable. However, Au@TiO2 is an easily separable and recyclable catalyst, which would facilitate the synthesis of organic compounds without applying any hazardous materials. Furthermore, the luminescence behavior of the synthesized Schiff bases exhibited spectral shape dependence on the substituent group. Interestingly, the compounds also displayed deep-blue fluorescence with Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of y < 0.1. Thus, these materials may contribute to decreasing the energy consumption of the emitting devices.

Abstract
New three-ring ester/azomethine homologues series, (E)-4-((4-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)phenyl 4-(alkoxy)benzoate In, were prepared and their properties were investigated experimentally and theoretically. FT-IR, NMR, and elemental analyses were used to confirm the chemical structures of the synthesized compounds. The mesomorphic activities of the planned homologues were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy. All of the homologous examined were found to have non-mesomorphic properties. Theoretical calculations using the density functional theory (DFT) were used to validate the experimental data and determine the most stable conformation of the synthesized compounds. All calculated conformers' thermal properties, dipole moments, and polarizability were discussed. The results show that the terminal alkoxy chain length affects the thermal parameters of the conformers. The correlations between these parameters' values and the conformer type were demonstrated. The base component was expected to be in two conformers according to the orientation of the N atom of imine-linkage. DFT calculations revealed the more probable of the two possible conformers, and the incorporation of the alkoxy terminal chain in one position affect its geometrical and mesomerphic characteristics.

Abstract
The physical and chemical properties of three new liquid crystalline derivatives, based on an azomethine core with low-temperature mesophase—namely (4-methoxybenzylideneamino) phenyl palmitate (I), (4-methoxybenzylideneamino) phenyl oleate (II), and (4-methoxybenzylideneamino) phenyl linoleate (III)—were prepared and physically examined using experimental methodologies. Elemental analysis, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy were used to confirm their molecular structure. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) were used to investigate their mesomorphic activity. The results revealed that compound (I) is monotropic smectogenic, possessing the smectic A mesophase, whereas the other two analogues were shown to possess the SmA phase enantiotropically. Two of the saturated and unsaturated prepared derivatives (namely I and II) were used to construct their phase diagram. The eutectic composition of the mixture examined showed a slight enhancement of the stability of the smectic A phase. Polymorphic phases were produced at the eutectic composition of the binary phase diagram of the derivative II with the 4-n-dodecyloxy benzoic acid component.

Abstract
Schiff bases (SBs) have extensive applications in different fields such as analytical, inorganic and organic chemistry. They are used as dyes, catalysts, polymer stabilizers, luminescence chemosensors, catalyzers in the fixation of CO2 biolubricant additives and have been suggested for solar energy applications as well. Further, a wide range of pharmacological and biological applications, such as antimalarial, antiproliferative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antipyretic, antibacterial and antifungal uses, emphasize the need for SB synthesis. Several SBs conjugated with chitosan have been studied in order to enhance the antibacterial activity of chitosan. Moreover, the use of the nanoparticles of SBs may improve their antimicrobial effects. Herein, we provide an analytical overview of the antibacterial and antifungal properties of SBs and chitosan-based SBs as well as SBs-functionalized nanoparticles. The most relevant and recent literature was reviewed for this purpose.

Abstract
New homologues set liquid crystalline materials, based on furfural derivatives, namely, (E)-4-((furan-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate (Fn), were synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic and optical characteristics. The prepared homologues series constitutes three derivatives that bear different terminal flexible alkyl chain lengths that vary between 6 and 12 carbons and attached to the phenyl ring linked to the ester group. A furfural moiety is introduced into the other terminal of the molecular structure. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated via elemental analyses, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM showed that all the synthesized furfural derivatives are purely nematogenic, exhibiting an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (F12) that is dimorphic possessing a monotropic smectic A phase and an enantiotropic N mesophase. Results indicated that the incorporation of the heterocyclic furfural ring into the molecular skeleton affected both the mesophase range and stability of investigated homologue. Analysis of the optical properties revealed that the shortest chain compound (F6) possesses two direct band gaps, at 2.73 and 3.64 eV, in addition to higher absorption than the higher homologues, F10 and F12. On the other hand, all the synthesized homologues (Fn) showed Ohmic behaviors, with electric resistances in the GΩ range. The values of the electrical resistances are 103.71, 12.91, and 196.85 GΩ at 0.05 V for F6, F10, and F12, respectively.

Abstract
New conical-shaped geometrical supramolecular H-bonded liquid crystal complexes were formed through 1:2 intermolecular interactions of H-bonding between flexible core (adipic acid, A) and lateral chloro-substituted azopyridines (Bn). The chains of the terminally alkoxy substituted base (n) were changed between 8 and 16 carbons. Mesomorphic and optical examinations of the prepared complexes were measured via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to confirm the Fermi bands of the H- bonding interactions. Induced nematogenic mesophases that cover the whole lengths of alkoxy-chains were detected. The non-linear geometries of the designed supramolecular complexes were also confirmed via Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was found that the length of terminal alkoxy chain of the base moiety highly affects the geometrical structure of the investigated complexes. Moreover, it increases the thermodynamic energy and influences the geometrical parameters. The electrical properties of each of the acid component (A), the base (B16) and their 1:2 complex (A/2B16) were evaluated using the Keithley measurement-source unit. The optical properties studies showed that the influences in the optical absorption and the reduction of the energy gap of the complex compared to its individual components made the resulted supramolecular H-bonded complex soft material suitable for solar energy investigations.

Abstract
A novel liquid crystal homologous series based on the benzene sulphonic acid moiety, namely (E)-4-((4-((4-(alkoxy)benzoyl)oxy)benzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (Sn), was synthesized and examined via different experimental and theoretical measurements. The four synthesized members have terminally connected alkoxy chain groups, which vary between 6 and 12 carbons. FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analyses, were used to confirm their molecular structures. Mesomorphic and optical investigations of the prepared homologues were also conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The DSC and POM characterization revealed that all of the synthesized sulphonic acid members are monomorphic, exhibiting a pure smectic A (SmA) mesophase with enantiotropic properties. Moreover, all compounds in the group have high thermal transition temperatures. The terminal electron-withdrawing group -SO3H plays a considerable role in the stabilization of the molecule, which in return resulted in high thermal SmA stability. Furthermore, the experimental data relating to the mesophase behavior were substantiated via computational studies using the DFT approach. In addition, the terminal -SO3H moiety has an essential impact on the thermal and physical parameters of possible geometries. All members of the synthesized Sn series exhibit ohmic behavior with electrical resistance in the GΩ range, as revealed by electrical measurements. The S10 electrode had the highest electrical conductivity: 35.16 pS. It also showed two direct optical band gaps of 3.58 and 3.23 eV with Urbach energies of 1261.1 and 502.4 meV. Upon decreasing the number of carbon atoms to n = 6, the main bandgap for S6 reduced to 3.3 eV. The highest conductivity, good absorption, and two large bandgaps recorded for the chain derivative S10 make it suitable for investigations relating to energy-based applications.

Abstract
A new series of laterally fluorinated mesomorphic compounds, namely 2-fluoro-4-((4-(alkyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl 4-substitutedbenzoate (Inx) were prepared and evaluated for their mesophase behavior. The synthesized series constitutes five members that possess different terminally attached polar groups (X). Their molecular structures were confirmed by elemental analyses and both FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Examination of the prepared derivatives was conducted via experimental and theoretical tools. Mesomorphic investigations were carried by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC and POM measurements indicated that except for the un-substituted analogue, all other derivatives were purely nematogenic, possessing their nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. This is to say that insertions of terminal polar substituents on their mesogenic structures induced the N phase. In addition, the location of lateral and terminal polar moieties played a considerable role in achieving good thermal N stability. Computational calculations were investigated to determine the deduced optimized molecular structures. Theoretical data indicated that both size and polarity of the terminal substituent (X) have essential impact on the thermal parameters and optical properties of possible geometries.

Abstract
New homologues series of liquid crystalline materials namely, (E)-3-methoxy-4-[(p-tolylimino)methyl]phenyl 4-alkloxybenzoates (I-n), were designed and evaluated for their mesomorphic and optical behavior. The prepared series constitutes three members that differ from each other by the terminally attached alkoxy chain group, these vary between 6 and 12 carbons. A laterally OCH3 group is incorporated into the central benzene ring in meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives are conducted using differential scanning-calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical-microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated by elemental analyses and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM investigations revealed that all the synthesized derivatives are purely nematogenic exhibiting only nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (I-12) that is dimorphic possesses smectic A and N phases. Moreover, all members of the group have a wide mesomorphic range with high thermal nematic stability. A comparative study was established between the present derivative (I-6) and their previously prepared isomer. The results indicated that the location exchange of the polar compact group (CH3) influences the N mesophase stability and range. The electrical measurements revealed that all synthesized series I-n show Ohmic behaviors with effective electric resistances in the GΩ range. Under white light illumination, the effective electric conductivity for the compound I-8 is five times that obtained in dark conditions. This derivative also showed two direct optical band gaps in the UV and visible light range. In addition, I-6 has band energy gaps of values 1.07 and 2.79 eV, which are suitable for solar energy applications.
