Effect of hyaluronic acid-stabilized silver nanoparticles on lettuce seed germination

Nanotechnology has brought significant advancements to agriculture through the development of engineered nanomaterials (ENPs). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) capped with polysaccharides have been applied in agricultural diagnostics, crop pest management, and seed priming. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural polysaccharide with bactericidal properties, is considered a growth regulator for plant tissues and an inducer of systemic resistance against plant diseases. Additionally, HA has been employed as a stabilizing agent for AgNPs. This study investigated the synthesis and effects of hyaluronic acid-stabilized silver nanoparticles (HA-AgNPs) as a seed priming agent on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seed germination. HA-AgNPs were characterized using several techniques, exhibiting spherical morphology and good colloidal stability. Germination assays conducted with 0.1, 0.04, and 0.02 g/L of HA-AgNPs showed a concentration-dependent reduction in seed germination. Conversely, lower concentrations of HA-AgNPs significantly increased germination rates, survival, tolerance indices, and seed water absorption compared to silver ions (Ag+). SEM/EDS indicated more significant potential for HA-AgNPs internalization compared to Ag+. Therefore, these findings are innovative and open new avenues for understanding the impact of Ag+ and HA-AgNPs on seed germination.

Nanocomposite Hydrogels-A Promising Approach towards Enhanced Bioavailability and Controlled Drug Delivery

Nanotechnology has emerged as the eminent focus of today's research to overcome challenges related to conventional drug delivery systems. A wide spectrum of novel delivery systems has been investigated to improve the therapeutic outcomes of drugs. The polymer-based nanocomposite hydrogels (NCHs) that have evolved as efficient carriers for controlled drug delivery are of particular interest in this regard. Nanocomposites amalgamate the properties of both nanoparticles (NPs) as well as hydrogels, exhibiting superior functionalities over conventional hydrogels. This multiple functionality is based upon advanced mechanical, electrical, optical as well as magnetic properties. Here is a brief overview of the various types of nanocomposites, such as NCHs based on Carbon-bearing nanomaterials, polymeric nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles, and metal and metal-oxide NPs. Accordingly, this article will review numerous ways of preparing these NCHs with particular emphasis on the vast biomedical applications displayed by them in numerous fields such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bioprinting, biosensing, imaging and gene silencing, cancer therapy, antibacterial therapy, etc. Moreover, various features can be tuned, based on the final application, by controlling the chemical composition of hydrogel network, which may also influence the released conduct. Subsequently, the recent work and future prospects of this newly emerging class of drug delivery system have been enlisted.

Recent Progress in Hyaluronic-Acid-Based Hydrogels for Bone Tissue Engineering

Hydrogel-based bone tissue engineering is a potential strategy for treating bone abnormalities and fractures. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural polymer that is widely distributed in the human body and plays a significant role in numerous physiological processes such as cell migration, tissue hydration, and wound healing. Hydrogels based on HA and its derivatives have gained popularity as potential treatments for bone-related diseases. HA-based hydrogels have been extensively studied for their ability to mimic the natural extracellular matrix of bone tissue and provide a suitable microenvironment for cell support and tissue regeneration. The physical and chemical properties of HA can be modified to improve its mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and osteogenic potential. Moreover, HA-based hydrogels combined with other biomaterials in the presence or absence of bioactive agents have been investigated as a means of improving the mechanical properties and bioactivity of the hydrogel scaffold. Therefore, HA-based hydrogels have shown great promise in bone tissue engineering due to their biocompatibility, osteogenic activity, and ability to mimic the natural extracellular matrix of bone tissue. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in HA-based hydrogels for bone tissue engineering, highlighting the key advances, challenges, and future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

Chemical interactions in composites of gellan gum and bioactive glass: self-crosslinking and in vitro dissolution

We investigated the interactions between the organic-inorganic phases in composites and the impact on in vitro dissolution. The composite consists of a hydrogel-forming polysaccharide gellan gum (GG, organic phase) and a borosilicate bioactive glass (BAG, inorganic phase). The BAG loading in the gellan gum matrix varied from 10 to 50 wt%. While mixing GG and BAG, the ions released from BAG microparticles crosslinked with the carboxylate anions of GG. The nature of the crosslinking was assessed, and its impact on mechanical properties, swelling ratio, and enzymatic degradation profile upon immersion for up to 2 weeks was studied. Loading up to 30 wt% of BAG in GG caused an increase in mechanical properties associated with an increasing crosslinking density. At higher BAG loading, excess divalent ions and percolation of particles led to a decrease in the fracture strength and compressive modulus. Upon immersion, a decrease in the composite mechanical properties was attributed to the dissolution of the BAG and the loosening of the glass/matrix interface. The enzymatic degradation of the composites was inhibited at higher BAG loadings (40 and 50 wt%) even when the specimen was immersed for 48 h in PBS buffer with lysozyme. During in vitro dissolution in both SBF and PBS, the ions released from the glass led to the precipitation of hydroxyapatite already at day 7. In conclusion, we thoroughly discussed the in vitro stability of the GG/BAG composite and established the maximum BAG loading to enhance the GG crosslinking and mechanical properties. Based on this study, 30, 40, and 50 wt% of BAG in GG will be further investigated in an in vitro cell culture study.

Carrier systems for bone morphogenetic proteins: An overview of biomaterials used for dentoalveolar and maxillofacial bone regeneration

Different types of biomaterials have been used to fabricate carriers to deliver bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in both dentoalveolar and maxillofacial bone regeneration procedures. Despite that absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) is considered the gold standard for BMP delivery, there is still some concerns regarding its use mainly due to its poor mechanical properties. To overcome this, novel systems are being developed, however, due to the wide variety of biomaterial combination, the heterogeneous assessment of newly formed tissue, and the intended clinical applications, there is still no consensus regarding which is more efficient in a particular clinical scenario. The combination of two or more biomaterials in different topological configurations has allowed specific controlled-release patterns for BMPs, improving their biological and mechanical properties compared with classical single-material carriers. However, more basic research is needed. Since the BMPs can be used in multiple clinical scenarios having different biological and mechanical needs, novel carriers should be developed in a context-specific manner. Thus, the purpose of this review is to gather current knowledge about biomaterials used to fabricate delivery systems for BMPs in both dentoalveolar and maxillofacial contexts. Aspects related with the biological, physical and mechanical characteristics of each biomaterial are also presented and discussed.

HYDRHA: Hydrogels of hyaluronic acid. New biomedical approaches in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and tissue engineering

In the last decade, hyaluronic acid (HA) has attracted an ever-growing interest in the biomedical engineering field as a biocompatible, biodegradable, and chemically versatile molecule. In fact, HA is a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is essential for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis and crosstalk. Innovative experimental strategies in vitro and in vivo using three-dimensional (3D) HA systems have been increasingly reported in studies of diseases, replacement of tissue and organ damage, repairing wounds, and encapsulating stem cells for tissue regeneration. The present work aims to give an overview and comparison of recent work carried out on HA systems showing advantages, limitations, and their complementarity, for a comprehensive characterization of their use. A special attention is paid to the use of HA in three important areas: cancer, diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), and tissue regeneration, discussing the most innovative experimental strategies. Finally, perspectives within and beyond these research fields are discussed.

Hyaluronic Acid-Based Nanomaterials as a New Approach to the Treatment and Prevention of Bacterial Infections

Bacterial contamination of medical devices is a great concern for public health and an increasing risk for hospital-acquired infections. The ongoing increase in antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains highlights the urgent need to find new effective alternatives to antibiotics. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a valuable polymer in biomedical applications, partly due to its bactericidal effects on different platforms such as contact lenses, cleaning solutions, wound dressings, cosmetic formulations, etc. Because the pure form of HA is rapidly hydrolyzed, nanotechnology-based approaches have been investigated to improve its clinical utility. Moreover, a combination of HA with other bactericidal molecules could improve the antibacterial effects on drug-resistant bacterial strains, and improve the management of hard-to-heal wound infections. This review summarizes the structure, production, and properties of HA, and its various platforms as a carrier in drug delivery. Herein, we discuss recent works on numerous types of HA-based nanoparticles to overcome the limitations of traditional antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. Advances in the fabrication of controlled release of antimicrobial agents from HA-based nanosystems can allow the complete eradication of pathogenic microorganisms.

A Versatile Strategy for the Fabrication of Poly(ethyl methacrylate) Composites

Poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) is dissolved in ethanol, known to be a non-solvent for PEMA, due to the solubilizing ability of an added bile acid biosurfactant, lithocholic acid (LA). The ability to avoid traditional toxic and carcinogenic solvents is important for the fabrication of composites for biomedical applications. The formation of concentrated solutions of high molecular weight PEMA is a key factor for the film deposition using the dip coating method. PEMA films provide corrosion protection for stainless steel. Composite films are prepared, containing bioceramics, such as hydroxyapatite and silica, for biomedical applications. LA facilitates dispersion of hydroxyapatite and silica in suspensions for film deposition. Ibuprofen and tetracycline are used as model drugs for the fabrication of composite films. PEMA-nanocellulose films are successfully prepared using the dip coating method. The microstructure and composition of the films are investigated. The conceptually new approach developed in this investigation represents a versatile strategy for the fabrication of composites for biomedical and other applications, using natural biosurfactants as solubilizing and dispersing agents.
