Effect of Internal Pores Formed by a Superabsorbent Polymer on Durability and Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Specimens

Investigation of the Compressive Strength and Void Analysis of Cement Pastes with Superabsorbent Polymer

This study aimed to experimentally investigate the compressive strength and air voids of cement pastes with varying dosages of Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) and water-to-cement (w/c) ratios. Cement pastes were prepared using three different w/c ratios of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6, along with different dosages of SAP ranging from 0.2% to 0.5% by weight of cement. Additionally, SAP was introduced in two forms: dry and wet. After casting the cubes, two distinct curing conditions were employed: curing at a temperature of 20 °C with a Relative Humidity (RH) of 60% (Curing 1), and water curing (Curing 2). The results revealed that the addition of SAP increased early strength when subjected to Curing 1, followed by a decrease in later strength. On the other hand, samples with SAP and water curing exhibited higher strength compared to those without SAP, especially with w/c ratios of 0.4 and 0.5. However, at a w/c ratio of 0.6, nearly all samples showed a reduction in strength compared to those without SAP. Furthermore, air void analysis was performed on all samples cured for 28 days using an image analysis technique. The samples containing wet SAP resulted in a higher total air content compared to the samples with dry SAP. Additionally, the incorporation of wet SAP in cement paste led to lower specific surface areas and a higher spacing factor than the samples with dry SAP. These findings suggest that the clumping of wet SAP particles during presoaking resulted in coarser air voids compared to the samples containing dry SAP.

Investigating the Impact of Superabsorbent Polymer Sizes on Absorption and Cement Paste Rheology

This study aims to understand the water retention capabilities of Superabsorbent Polymers (SAPs) in different alkaline environments for internal curing and to assess their impact on the rheological properties of cement paste. Therefore, the focus of this paper is on the absorption capacities of two different sizes of polyacrylic-based Superabsorbent Polymers : SAP A, with an average size of 28 µm, and SAP B, with an average size of 80 µm, in various solutions, such as pH 7, pH 11, pH 13, and cement filtrate solution (pH 13.73). Additionally, the study investigates the rheological properties of SAP-modified cement pastes, considering three different water-to-cement (w/c) ratios (0.4, 0.5, and 0.6) and four different dosages of SAPs (0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5% by weight of cement). The results showed that the absorption capacity of SAP A was higher in all solutions compared to SAP B. However, both SAPs exhibited lower absorption capacity and early desorption in the cement filtrate solution. In contrast to the absorption results in pH 13 and cement filtrate solutions, the rheological properties, including plastic viscosity and yield stress, of the cement paste with a w/c ratio of 0.4 and 0.5, as well as both dry and wet (presoaked) SAPs, were higher than those of the cement paste without SAP, indicating continuous absorption by SAP. The viscosity and yield stress increased over time with increasing SAP dosage. However, in the mixes with a w/c ratio of 0.6, the values of plastic viscosity and yield stress were initially lower for the mixes with dry SAPs compared to the reference mix. Additionally, cement pastes containing wet SAP showed higher viscosity and yield stress compared to the pastes containing dry SAP.

Durability of Concrete with Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) Assessed Using Depth of Carbonation and NDT Ultrasonic Methods

The paper concerns destructive and non-destructive (NDT) evaluation of the effect of the addition of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) used as a carrier of mixing water and a means of internal curing on the durability of concrete. The research concerns testing of five concretes-an ordinary reference concrete and four concretes differing in the content of mixing water introduced into the concrete mix in the form of pre-saturated SAP particles (25%, two variants of 50% and 75% of the total mixing water in the form of SAP hydrogel). The research consisted of 4 stages of tests. The subsequent stages involved the analysis of the effect of using SAP as a carrier of mixing water on the particular characteristics of concrete mix and hardened concrete, i.e., consistency and density of concrete mix (1st stage), carbonation tested using two indicators-phenolphthalein and thymol phenolphthalein (2nd stage), and finally: the homogeneity of the concretes' structure by means of ultrasonic method (determination of ultrasonic pulse velocity) 28 days after production (3rd stage) and 3 years after production (4th stage). The ultrasonic pulse (or wave) velocity was then correlated with the content of water applied in the form of SAP hydrogel. The statistical analysis of results showed that the method of introducing the mixing water into the concrete mix in the form of pre-absorbed superabsorbent polymer, although it changed the concrete mix consistency, did not significantly affect the concrete ability to resist carbonation. Meanwhile, after 3 years, the densification of the microstructure of concrete with SAP has been observed.

Shrinkage and Cracking Properties of Cellulose Fiber-Concrete Composites for 3D Printing by Leveraging Internal Curing

Compared with conventional formwork casting materials, 3D printed concrete (3DPC) is characterized by large amounts of cementitious materials, a low aggregate-binder ratio, and a large water evaporation area, which make the printed materials and structures highly prone to plastic shrinkage and cracking. In this study, cellulose fibers were incorporated into concrete to improve its moisture distribution and increase its early-age strength. The effects of both dry and prewet cellulose fibers on properties of 3DPC were experimentally investigated. To ensure consistency in the amounts of dry fibers used, 0.5-2% dry cellulose fibers and 1-4% prewet cellulose fibers were adopted. The effects of the added cellulose fibers on printability, mechanical strength, shrinkage, and cracking performance of the 3DPC were experimentally studied. Particularly, a constraint method was developed to access the cracking behavior of 3DPC. Favorable shrinkage resistance was achieved, and the 120-day shrinkage decreased by 17.9% and 23.3% by addition of 2% dry fibers and 4% prewet fibers, respectively. Cracking was eliminated with addition of 4% prewet fibers, without influencing the printability and mechanical properties.

Research on Performance Deterioration of Internally Cured Pavement Concrete under the Coupling Effect of Salt Freeze-Thaw

This paper aims at solving the material durability problem caused by spraying deicing salt on pavement concrete in the northern winter. Super absorbent polymer (SAP) was adopted as an internal curing agent to enhance the durability of pavement concrete. Curing parameters including particle size and dosage of SAP and curing condition were optimized based on mortar tests by means of the grey target decision method. The deterioration rule of durability and mechanical properties of pavement concrete internally cured by different SAP dosages after salt freeze-thaw cycles were explored through rapid freeze-thaw test. Combined with the characteristics of pore structure, hydration and microstructure, the influence mechanism of SAP on the salt freeze-thaw resistance of pavement concrete was revealed. The experimental results showed that: (i) The reduction in mass loss rate and relative dynamic modulus was significantly improved by SAP internal curing with moderate dosage; (ii) The more freeze-thaw cycles the specimen underwent, the greater the increase in strength; (iii) After 75 cycles, the chloride ion erosion depth could be decreased by approximately 23.18%. Moreover, the addition of SAP could refine the pore size, inhibit the generation of shrinkage microcracks, and promote the degree of cement hydration in the late stage, which improved the internal density of the cement concrete structure. Therefore, the deterioration of pavement under the coupling effect of salt freeze-thaw was reduced.

Effect of Super-Absorbent Polymer (SAP) Incorporation Method on Mechanical and Shrinkage Properties of Internally Cured Concrete

To study the effect of SAP incorporation on the early shrinkage of SAP internally cured concrete with the aim to solve the problems of early shrinkage and cracking of bridge leveling-layer concrete, using the SAP incorporation method as a parameter, the mechanical properties test of internally cured concrete, the shrinkage performance test of ring restraint and the scanning electron microscope observation test were carried out. The effects of the SAP content and incorporation method on the flowability, mechanical properties, shrinkage performance and microstructure of internally cured concrete were analyzed. The experimental results show that when the content of the SAP in concrete is 0.2% of the mass of cementitious materials, it has the least influence on the compressive strength of concrete. The addition of preabsorbed water to the SAP can delay early cement hydration, increase the later cement hydration rate and final hydration degree, and improve the concrete strength. Preabsorbed water mixed with an SAP can effectively improve the shrinkage of concrete, and the shrinkage reduction effect is more obvious than that from the dry addition of the SAP; the early cracking risk of concrete without an SAP is high, and it will crack before day 28. The addition of an SAP can strengthen the microstructure of concrete and improve its density and crack resistance, effectively avoiding concrete cracking. It is recommended that the water-absorbent resin be incorporated in a preabsorbent manner, and the SAP preabsorbent ratio is equal to the maximum water storage rate of the SAP.

Properties and Strength Prediction Modeling of Green Mortar with Brick Powder Subjected to a Short-Term Thermal Shock at Elevated Temperatures

The cement industry is responsible for 8% of global CO₂ production. Therefore, a clear trend has been observed recently to replace to some extent the main binder of cement composites with environmentally friendly or recycled materials with a lower carbon footprint. This paper presents the effect of brick powder (BP) on the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of cement mortars. The effect of a short-term thermal shock on morphology and strength properties of green mortars was investigated. BP addition caused increase in porosity and decrease in compressive and flexural strength of mortars. The best results were obtained for samples with 5% wt. BP addition. Above this addition the strength decreased. The mechanical performance of the samples subjected to thermal loading increased compared to the reference samples, which is the result of a process called as the “internal autoclaving”. The BP addition positively affects the linear shrinkage, leading to its reduction. The lowest linear shrinkage value was achieved by the mortar with the highest BP addition. An intelligent modeling approach for the prediction of strength characteristics, depending on the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) is also presented. To solve the model problem, a supervised machine-learning algorithm in the form of an SVM (support vector machines) regression approach was implemented in this paper. The results indicate that BP can be used as a cement replacement in cement mortars in limited amounts. The amount of the additive should be moderate and tuned to the features that mortars should have.
