Synthesis of Selected Mixed Oxide Materials with Tailored Photocatalytic Activity in the Degradation of Tetracycline

New Insights into the Application of Biocompatible (Un)Modified TiO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 Oxide Fillers in Light-Curing Materials

A novel UV-light-curable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate matrix composite material with unmodified and methacryloxyl-grafted TiO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 systems was developed and tested as a potential coating material for medical components. The main goal of the research was to evaluate how the addition of (un)modified inorganic oxide fillers affects the properties of the composition (viscosity, UV/Vis spectra), the kinetics of photocuring (photo-DSC), and the morphological (SEM), physicochemical, and thermal properties (DSC, TGA) of the resulting composites. The applied filler functionalization process decreased their polarity and changed their size, BET surface area, and pore volume, which influenced the viscosity and kinetics of the photocurable system. In addition, the addition of synthesized fillers reduced the polymer's glass transition temperature and increased its thermal stability. It was also observed that additional UV irradiation of the tested composite changed its surface, resulting in hydrophobic properties (with the addition of 7 wt.% filler, an increase in the contact angle by more than 45% was observed).

Investigating the different transformations of tetracycline using birnessite under different reaction conditions and various humic acids

Prior studies have successfully used manganese oxides to facilitate the transformation of tetracycline in aqueous solution. To further understand the kinetic and the transformation pathway of tetracycline via birnessite (δ-MnO2) under different conditions, experiments were conducted at pH levels of 3, 6, and 9 in the presence or absence of Aldrich humic acid (ADHA). Tetracycline removal followed the pseudo-second-order reaction model in all investigated cases, and the removal efficiency (g mg-1 h -1) followed the following trend: pH 3 (0.45/0.27) > pH 6 (0.036/0.087) > pH 9 (0.036/0.103) in the absence/presence of ADHA. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry results identified five main transformation products at m/z 495, 477, 493, 459, and 415, produced by the transformation reactions, including hydration, oxidation, desaturation, and oxy reduction. Notably, in the presence of ADHA at pH 3, products with higher toxicity secondary (m/z 477 and 495) were reduced, while less toxicity products (m/z 459 and 415) were enhanced. The experiments utilizing tetracycline and δ-MnO2 with varied humic acids (HA) revealed that HA with high polar organic carbon groups, such as O-alkyl, exhibited higher removal efficiency at pH 6. This research offers the first comprehensive insights into the pathway transformations of tetracycline via δ-MnO2 under different pH conditions and HA types. For further understanding, future work should investigate the binding of HA, TTC, and/or Mn2+ and the oxidation capacity of MnO2 after the reaction to clarify Mn2+ elution mechanisms.

Physicomechanical and Antimicrobial Characteristics of Cement Composites with Selected Nano-Sized Oxides and Binary Oxide Systems

In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the durability of building materials, including those based on cementitious binders. Important aspects of durability include the increase of the strength of the cement matrix and enhancement of material resistance to external factors. The use of nanoadditives may be a way to meet these expectations. In the present study, zinc, titanium and copper oxides, used in single and binary systems (to better the effect of their performance), were applied as additives in cement mortars. In the first part of this work, an extensive physicochemical analysis of oxides was carried out, and in the second, their application ranges in cement mortars were determined. The subsequent analyses were employed in determining the physicochemical properties of pristine oxides: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), measurement of the particle size distribution, as well as zeta potential measurement depending on the pH values. Influence on selected physicomechanical parameters of the cement matrix and resistance to the action of selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi were also examined. Our work indicated that all nanoadditives worsened the mechanical parameters of mortars during the first 3 days of hardening, while after 28 days, an improvement was achieved for zinc and titanium(IV) oxides. Binary systems and copper(II) oxide deteriorated in strength parameters throughout the test period. In contrast, copper(II) oxide showed the best antibacterial activity among all the tested oxide systems. Based on the inhibitory effect of the studied compounds, the following order of microbial susceptibility to inhibition of growth on cement mortars was established (from the most susceptible, to the most resistant): E. coli < S. aureus < C. albicans < B. cereus = P. aeruginosa < P. putida.
