Fixed-Bed Column Technique for the Removal of Phosphate from Water Using Leftover Coal

ZnO/PUF composites with a large capacity for phosphate adsorption: adsorption behavior and mechanism studies

Phosphate is present in all kinds of industrial wastewater; how to remove it to meet the strict total phosphorus discharge standards is a challenge. This study used a one-step foaming technique to fill polyurethane foam (PUF) with ZnO, taking advantage of PUF's excellent features like its porous network, lightweight, hydrophilicity, and abundance of binding sites to create ZnO/PUF composites with high adsorption capacity and exceptional separation properties. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, starting pH, and matrix impacts of ZnO/PUF composites on phosphate were examined in batch studies. The results showed that the composites had good adsorption performance for phosphate with a saturated adsorption capacity of 460.25 mg/g. The quasi-secondary kinetic and Langmuir models could better describe the adsorption process, which belonged to the chemical adsorption of monomolecular layers. The composites' ability to treat phosphates in complicated waters was shown by their ability to retain a high adsorption capacity in the pH range of 3-6. In column experiments, the composite also maintains a good affinity for phosphate during dynamic adsorption. Multiple characterizations indicate that the adsorption mechanism is a combined effect of ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, this study provides valuable insights for practical phosphorus-containing wastewater treatment.

Alginate-Moroccan Clay, New Bio-Nanocomposite for Removal of H2PO4-, HPO42-, and NO3- Ions from Aqueous Solutions

The aim of this work is to synthesize and characterize alginate-Moroccan clay bio-composite in order to improve our understanding of the adsorption of inorganic pollutants found in textile effluents. Characterization of the bio-composite used was carried out using a variety of techniques (IR-TF, SEM, DRX, and pHZPC). The influence of the medium's physico-chemical parameters (temperature, pH, initial concentration, etc.) on the retention of inorganic pollutants was also studied. Studies of adsorption and inorganic pollutants such as orthophosphate (H2PO4- and HPO42-) and nitrate (NO3-) ions were carried out, using simple solutions from the laboratory, in a batch system. This study explored the impact of adsorbent dose, contact time, solution pH, and temperature on the adsorption process. Various kinetic models, including pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion, and Elovich models, were tested and evaluated, to illustrate the adsorption kinetics. This study's findings demonstrated that the adsorption process follows second-order kinetics, with associated rate constants successfully determined. The correlation coefficient for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model is nearly equal to 1 (>0.98), and the value of theoretical adsorption capacity (qe,the) is comparable to the experimental one (qe,the = 58.14 mg/g for H2PO4-, qe,the = 54.64 mg/g for HPO42-, and qe,the = 52.63 mg/g for NO3-). Additionally, the adsorption equilibrium was investigated through the application of various mathematical models, including the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models, to assess the mechanistic parameters associated with the adsorption process. Among these models, the Langmuir isotherm emerged as the most suitable one for characterizing the adsorption of H2PO4-, HPO42-, and NO3- ions using bio-nanocomposite beads. The maximum adsorbed amounts of metal ions by the bio-nanocomposite used were 625 mg/g for H2PO4-, 909.09 mg/g for HPO42-, and 588.23 mg/g for NO3- from the batch system. The endothermic and physical nature of the adsorption is suggested by the positive values of ΔH°, which is consistent with experimental findings. The adsorption process is spontaneous, as evidenced by the negative ΔG° values. Positive ΔS° values indicate increased randomness at the solid/liquid interface during adsorption of ion-organic ions onto the engineered bio-nanocomposite. The obtained results demonstrated that, from a scientific perspective, alginate-Moroccan clay bio-nanocomposites exhibit a highly significant adsorption capability for the removal of oxyanions in aqueous environments.

Coconut power: a sustainable approach for the removal of Cr6+ ions using a new coconut-based polyurethane foam/activated carbon composite in a fixed-bed column

To attain efficient removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) from aqueous solutions, a novel polyurethane foam-activated carbon (PUAC) adsorbent composite was developed. The composite material was synthesized by the binding of coconut shell-based activated carbon (AC) onto a coconut oil-based polyurethane matrix. To thoroughly characterize the physicochemical properties of the newly developed material, various analytical techniques including FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, BET, and TGA analyses were conducted. The removal efficiency of the PUAC composite in removing Cr⁶⁺ ions from aqueous solutions was evaluated through column experiments with the highest adsorption capacity of 28.41 mg g^-1 while taking into account variables such as bed height, flow rate, initial Cr⁶⁺ ion concentration, and pH. Experimental data were fitted using Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and Adams-Bohart models to predict the column profiles and the results demonstrate high breakthrough and exhaustion time dependence on these variables. Among the obtained R² values of the models, a better fit was observed using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models, indicating their ability to effectively predict the adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ ions in a fixed bed column. Significantly, the exhausted adsorbent can be conveniently regenerated without any noteworthy loss of adsorption capability. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that this new PUAC composite material holds significant promise as a potent sorbent for wastewater treatment backed by its excellent performance, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, and outstanding reusability.

Fixed-Bed Column Adsorption Studies: Comparison of Alginate-Based Adsorbents for La(III) Ions Recovery

The paper investigated the adsorption of the packed-bed column with the alginate-based adsorbents (ALG-based adsorbents) such as alginate-biochar, alginate-clinoptilolite, alginate-lignin, and alginate-cellulose for La(III) ions' removal. Fixed-bed adsorption studies with various alginate-based adsorbents were carried out and compared to the La(III) ions adsorption. The columns were filled with ALG-based adsorbent beads of approximately 1.1 ± 0.005 mm spherical shapes. The effects of the inlet concentrations on the breakthrough curves were studied in terms of the adsorption performance of the ALG-based adsorbents. The experimental data were correlated with the Adams-Bohart, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Wolborska models to determine the best operational parameters. Based on the comparison of R² values, the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were found to be more suitable than the Adams-Bohart and Wolborska models. In the desorption study, the ALG-based adsorbents packed columns showed the maximum desorption of La(III) just after passing 100 cm³ of 1 mol/dm³ HCl. Overall, the results show that ALG-based adsorbents could be used for continuous recovery of La(III) ions from aqueous solutions and were not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.

Continuous Phosphate Removal and Recovery Using a Calcium Silicate Hydrate Composite Monolithic Cryogel Column

Toward the development of a practical and green approach for removing phosphate from water, a monolithic cryogel based on starch and calcium silicate hydrate (Cry-CSH) was employed as a phosphate adsorbent in a continuous flow system for the first time. The influence of flow rate, initial phosphate concentration, and adsorbent height on the adsorption efficiency was investigated. As the rate of flow and the initial concentration of phosphate increased, the total quantity of adsorbed phosphate dropped; however, the performance of the column was greatly enhanced by an increase in adsorbent height. The experimental data fit the Adams-Bohart model better than the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models at the beginning of the adsorption process. To evaluate its applicability, the continuous flow system based on the monolithic Cry-CSH column was applied for the removal of phosphate from the discharge effluent of the Patong Municipality Wastewater Treatment Plant (Phuket, Thailand), achieving an excellent total adsorption of 94.61%.

Adsorptive removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions using low-cost modified biochar-packed column: Effect of operational parameters and kinetic study

Adsorption in the continuous mode plays a significant role in wastewater treatment. In this study, Mimosa pigra-derived biochar modified with 2 M AlCl₃ salt was used to pack a lab-scale column to eliminate PO₄^3- from aqueous solutions. The influence of the operational factors, such as inlet PO₄^3- concentration (25-100 mg/L), flow rate (6-18 mL/min), and biochar bed height (1.5-4.5 cm), on the breakthrough curve was evaluated. The kinetic models of Adam-Bohart and Yoon-Nelson were utilized to analyze the experimental results. The best conditions were determined to be the influent PO₄^3- strength of 50 mg/L, injection speed of 6 mL/min, and column height of 4.5 cm. These results can be applied in the design of large-scale columns for the sequestration of PO₄^3- from wastewater.

A review of adsorption techniques for removal of phosphates from wastewater

Phosphate is considered the main cause of eutrophication and has received considerable attention recently. Several methods have been used for removal of phosphates in water and these include biological treatment, membrane filtration processes, chemical precipitation, and adsorption. Adsorption technology is highly effective in the removal of phosphate from wastewater even at low phosphate concentrations. Nanomaterials/nanoparticles, carbon-based materials (activated carbon and biochar), and their composites have been widely employed for the adsorptive removal and recovery of phosphate from wastewater due to their exceptional properties such as high surface area and high phosphate adsorption properties. This article is a review of the recently reported literature in the field of nanotechnology and activated carbon for the adsorption of phosphate from wastewater. Highlights of the adsorption mechanisms, adsorption behaviour, experimental parameters, effects of co-existing ions, and adsorbent modifications are also discussed.

Fixed-Bed Adsorption: Comparisons of Virgin and Zirconium Oxide-Coated Scoria for the Removal of Fluoride from Water

Many people worldwide are exposed to extreme levels of fluoride in drinking water. It is, therefore, critical to develop inexpensive, locally available, and environmentally friendly adsorbents for fluoride-laden water defluoridation. In the current study, virgin scoria (volcanic rock) from Ethiopia, was modified with zirconium oxide and used as an adsorbent in a fixed-bed column aiming at the removal of fluoride from water. The adsorption capability of zirconium oxide-coated scoria (ZrOCSc) was compared with unmodified virgin scoria (VSco). XRD, FTIR, XRF, SEM, ICP-OES, and the pH_PZC tests were evaluated to explore the adsorption mechanisms. Thermal analysis of VSco and ZrOCSc revealed lower total weight losses of 2.3 and 3.2 percent, respectively, owing to the removal of water molecules and OH species linked to metal oxides contained in the material. The effect of test conditions such as the pH of the solution and the influent flow rate on the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was carefully studied. ZrOCSc exhibited the maximum removal capacity of 58 mg/kg, which was 4.46 times higher than the observations for VSco (13 mg/kg) at pH 2, and an initial flow rate of 1.25 mL/min. Breakthrough time increased with decreasing initial pH and flow rate. The adsorption experimental data under various test conditions were examined by the Thomas and Adams–Bohart models. Both models were found very effective in describing the experimental data with a correlation coefficient (R²) of ≥0.976 (ZrOCSc) and ≥0.967 (VSco). Generally, coating VSco with zirconium oxide improved the adsorption performance of VSco; hence, a ZrOCSc-packed fixed bed could be employed for the decontamination of high levels of fluoride from groundwater. However, further examination of the adsorbent using natural groundwater is advisable to produce a definitive conclusion.
