Influence of Waste Glass Powder Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Autoclaved Building Materials

Experimental Study on Long-Term Mechanical Properties and Durability of Waste Glass Added to OPC Concrete

This study aims to achieve the sustainable utilization of waste glass resources through an investigation into the influence of three types of admixtures, namely waste glass powder (WGP) (G), waste glass powder-slag (G-S), and waste glass powder-fly ash (G-F), on the mechanical properties and durability performance of waste glass concrete. The experimental results demonstrate that the exclusive use of WGP as an admixture led to the relatively poor early compressive strength of the concrete, which decreased with an increase in dosage. However, at medium to long curing ages, the strength of the waste glass concrete could equal or even surpass that of ordinary concrete. When dual admixtures were employed, the G-S group exhibited higher compressive strength compared to the G-F group. Specifically, within the G-S group, a glass powder dosage of 15% yielded higher compressive strength, and after 180 days, the dual admixture groups exhibited greater strength than ordinary concrete (G0); the compressive strength of the tG1S1 group was 44.57 MPa, and that of the G0 group was 40.07 MPa. The chloride ion diffusion coefficient showed a varying trend with an increase in WGP dosage, initially decreasing and then increasing. The concrete's resistance to erosion was maximized when the glass powder dosage reached 30%. As the WGP dosage increased, the overall frost resistance decreased. For a total dosage of 30%, the optimal glass powder dosage in both G-S and G-F groups was found to be 15%.

Insight into the Behavior of Mortars Containing Glass Powder: An Artificial Neural Network Analysis Approach to Classify the Hydration Modes

In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is proposed to predict the hydration process of a new alternative binder. This model overcomes the lack of input parameters of physical models, providing a realistic explanation with few inputs and fast calculations. Indeed, four mortars are studied based on ordinary Portland cement (CEM I), cement with limited environmental impact (CEM III), and glass powder (GP) as the cement substitution. These mortars are named CEM I + GP and CEM III + GP. The properties of the mortars are characterized, and their life cycle assessment (LCA) is established. Indeed, a decrease in porosity is observed at 90 days by 4.6%, 2.5%, 12.4%, and 7.9% compared to those of 3 days for CEMI, CEMIII, CEMI + GP, and CEMIII + GP, respectively. In addition, the use of GP allows for reducing the mechanical strength in the short term. At 90 days, CEMI + GP and CEMIII + GP present a decrease of about 28% and 57% in compressive strength compared to CEMI and CEMIII, respectively. Nevertheless, strength does not cease increasing with the curing time, due to the continuous pozzolanic reactions between Ca(OH)₂ and silica contained in GP and slag present in CEMIII as demonstrated by the thermo-gravimetrical (TG) analysis. To summarize, CEMIII mortar provides similar performance compared to mortar with CEMI + GP in the long term. This can later be used in the construction sector and particularly in prefabricated structural elements. Moreover, the ANN model used to predict the heat of hydration provides a similar result compared to the experiment, with a resulting R² of 0.997, 0.968, 0.968, and 0.921 for CEMI, CEMIII, CEMI + GP, and CEMIII + GP, respectively, and allows for identifying the different hydration modes of the investigated mortars. The proposed ANN model will allow cement manufacturers to quickly identify the different hydration modes of new binders by using only the heat of hydration test as an input parameter.

Influence of Waste Basalt Powder Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Autoclave Brick

In the production of building materials, there has been an increased interest in the use of by-products and industrial waste in recent years. Such modifications make it possible to solve not only technical and economic problems, but also environmental problems. This article describes the use of basalt powder waste in sand-lime products (silicates). The aim of the study was to manage basalt powder waste and to investigate the changes it causes in sand-lime products. The article describes the planning of the experiment, which directly determines the number of samples and their composition, which was necessary to conducting a full analysis and correctly illustrating the relationships occurring in the samples. Basic tests were carried out: compressive strength, density and water absorption, as well as optical tests and scanning microscopy. Based on the research conducted, it was concluded that the use of basalt powder as a component of sand-lime products has positive effects. Studies show that the best results are achieved with a proportion of powder in the raw material mass of about 10%-the compressive strength reaches almost 30 MPa, which is almost twice that of traditional silicate.

Influence of Recipe Factors on the Structure and Properties of Non-Autoclaved Aerated Concrete of Increased Strength

At present, the load-bearing enclosing structures of buildings and structures are designed and built considering the increasing requirements for energy efficiency and energy saving of such structures. This is due to the need for a thrifty attitude to the energy consumed and the need to strive for the greening of construction and increase the energy efficiency of buildings and structures. In this regard, one of the most effective and proven building materials is cellular concrete. The purpose of this study was to study the influence of some prescription factors on the structure formation and properties of non-autoclaved aerated concrete with improved characteristics. Standard test methods were used, as well as SEM analysis of the structure of aerated concrete. Non-autoclaved aerated concrete with the replacement of part of the cement with microsilica in an amount from 4% to 16% MS showed higher strength characteristics compared to aerated concrete, where part of the cement was replaced by the addition of granulated blast-furnace slag and a complex additive. The maximum value of compressive strength was recorded for aerated concrete with 16% MS addition. The largest increase in the coefficients of constructive quality was observed in compositions of aerated concrete with the addition of silica fume from 11% to 46% compared with the control composition. The addition of microsilica makes it possible to achieve an improvement in the thermal conductivity characteristics of non-autoclaved aerated concrete (up to 10%). Replacing part of the cement with slag and complex additives does not have a significant effect on thermal conductivity. The obtained dependencies were confirmed by the analysis of the structure formation of the studied aerated concrete at the micro level. An improvement in the microstructure of aerated concrete with the addition of microsilica in comparison with samples of the control composition has been proven.

The Effect of the Type of Activator Anion on the Hydration of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag

In this study, ground granulated blast furnace slag was activated with a wide variety of sodium salts to compare the effects of their pH and anion size on the hydration progress and compressive strength development of GGBFS pastes. Research was carried out on samples activated with twelve different sodium salts and cured for one year. Changes in their phase composition (XRD), loss on ignition at different temperatures, expansion and microstructure (SEM + EDS) were examined over the entire curing period. The results showed that the presence of sodium ions is more important than the pH of the system, as activation took place even in the case of compounds whose solutions are characterized by a low pH, such as sodium tartrate or phosphate. The compressive strength of the pastes ranged from approximately 8 to 65 MPa after one year of curing.

The Effect of Various Grinding Aids on the Properties of Cement and Its Compatibility with Acrylate-Based Superplasticizer

The influence of grinding aids (pure triethanolamine and ethylene glycol) on the properties of cements, their compatibility with an acrylate-based superplasticizer and the rheological parameters of mortars were investigated. The presence of surfactants influences the standard properties of cements and the effectiveness of the superplasticizer. The results of the heat of hydration and setting time measurements indicate a delay in the hydration process and an increase in the induction period duration of the surfactant-doped pastes, in relation to the reference sample without grinding aids. Triethanolamine increases early-age compressive strength; the effect was observed for both standard and superplasticizer-containing mortars. The presence of grinding aids decreases the slump flow of mortars and increases rheological parameters such as yield stress (τ0) and viscosity (η).
