Novel Surfactant-Induced MWCNTs/PDMS-Based Nanocomposites for Tactile Sensing Applications

Wireless Alerts and Data Monitoring from BNNO-MWCNTs/PDMS Composite Film-Based TENG Integrated Inhaler for Smart Healthcare Application

In recent years, the implementation of energy-harvesting technology in medical equipment has attracted significant interest owing to its potential for self-powered and smart healthcare systems. Herein, the integration of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is proposed into an inhaler for energy-harvesting and smart inhalation monitoring. For this initially, barium sodium niobium oxide (Ba2NaNb5O15) microparticles (BNNO MPs) are synthesized via a facile solid-state synthesis process. The BNNO MPs with ferroelectricity and high dielectric constant are incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer to make BNNO/PDMS composite films (CFs) for TENG fabrication. The fabricated TENG is operated in a contact-separation mode, and its electrical output performance is compared to establish the optimal BNNO MPs concentration. Furthermore, multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), a conductive filler material, are used to enhance the electrical conductivity of the CFs, thereby improving the electrical output performance of the TENG. The robustness/durability of the proposed BNNO-MWCNTs/PDMS CF-based TENG are investigated. The proposed TENG device is demonstrated to harvest electrical energy from mechanical motions via regular human activities and power portable electronics. The TENG is integrated into the inhaler casing to count the number of sprays remaining in the canister, send the notification to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and harvest energy.

A Microfluidic Chip-Based Automated System for Whole-Course Monitoring the Drug Responses of Organoids

Tumor patients-derived organoids, as a promising preclinical prediction model, have been utilized to evaluate ex vivo drug responses for formulating optimal therapeutic strategies. Detecting adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has been widely used in existing organoid-based drug response tests. However, all commercial ATP detection kits containing the cell lysis procedure can only be applied for single time point ATP detection, resulting in the neglect of dynamic ATP variations in living cells. Meanwhile, due to the limited number of viable organoids from a single patient, it is impractical to exhaustively test all potential time points in search of optimal ones. In this work, a multifunctional microfluidic chip was developed to perform all procedures of organoid-based drug response tests, including establishment, culturing, drug treatment, and ATP monitoring of organoids. An ATP sensor was developed to facilitate the first successful attempt on whole-course monitoring the growth status of fragile organoids. To realize a clinically applicable automatic system for the drug testing of lung cancer, a microfluidic chip based automated system was developed to perform entire organoid-based drug response test, bridging the gap between laboratorial manipulation and clinical practices, as it outperformed previous methods by improving data repeatability, eliminating human error/sample loss, and more importantly, providing a more accurate and comprehensive evaluation of drug effects.

Amphiphilic silicones for the facile dispersion of carbon nanotubes and formation of soft skin electrodes

Flexible, dry skin electrodes represent a potentially superior alternative to standard Ag/AgCl metal electrodes for wearable devices used in long-term monitoring. Herein, such electrodes were formed using a facile method for dispersing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a silicone matrix using custom amphiphilic dispersive additives (DSPAs). Using only brief mixing and without the use of solvents or surface modification of CNTs, twelve poly(ethylene oxide)-silanes (PEO-SAs) of varying crosslinkability, architecture, siloxane tether length, and molar ratio of siloxane:PEO were combined with an addition cure silicone and CNTs. Nearly all PEO-SA modified silicone-CNT composites demonstrated improved conductivity compared to the unmodified composite. Best conductivities correlated to composites prepared with PEO-SAs that formed micelles of particular sizes (d ~ 200 - 300 nm) and coincided to PEO-SAs with a siloxane:PEO molar ratio of ~ 0.75 - 3.00. Superior dispersion of CNT by such PEO-SAs was exemplified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Advantageously, modified composites retained their moduli, rather than becoming more rigid. Resultant electrodes fabricated with modified composites showed skin-electrode impedance comparable to that of Ag/AgCl electrodes. Combined, these results demonstrate the potential of silicone-CNT composites prepared with PEO-SA DSPAs as flexible, dry electrodes as a superior alternative to traditional electrodes.
