Resistance and durability of fly ash based geopolymer for heavy metal immobilization: properties and mechanism

Geopolymer technology is an effective method of fly ash (FA) disposal developed in recent decades. This study provided a novel technology based on geopolymerization for FA resource, which could solve the problem of long-term heavy metal leakage trends. Firstly, Unconfine compressive strength (UCS) of geopolymer and the heavy metals leaching test was taken to discuss the effects of oxidize species. The results indicated that the UCS of geopolymer samples was increased with the increase of CaO, and the largest 28 d UCS was 24.8 MPa when CaO content was 31.5%. When the CaO content was 32%, the leaching concentration of heavy metals was the lowest (Pb2+ was 0.02 mg L-1, Cd2+ was 0.01 mg L-1), and the solidification rate of heavy metal ions were more than 93.6%. Secondly, two methods were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of FA based geopolymer. The observations suggested that the FA based geopolymer exhibits a high level of resistance to erosion caused by sulfate ions and chloride ions. Thirdly, carbonation tests were taken to discuss the durability of FA based geopolymer. The results shown that UCS exhibited a modest rise following the process of carbonation, and then demonstrated a stable trend after a period of 28 days, and the heavy metal leaching test results that comply with the limitations specified in the national standard at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days. The findings from accelerated carbonization tests at 56 days, determined by empirical equations, suggest that the carbonization age of geopolymers is projected to be 102 years. Finally, XRD, FTIR and SEM were taken to discuss the microstructure characterization of FA based geopolymer, and solidification mechanisms of heavy metal ions by geopolymer materials could be concluded as gelation, physical encapsulation, and chemical reactions.

Study of a Fire-Resistant Plate Containing Fly Ashes Generated from Municipal Waste Incinerator: Fire and Mechanical Characteristics and Environmental Life Cycle Assessment

The recycling of fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration is currently a global issue. This work intends to examine the viability of a novel recycling alternative for fly ashes as a component of fire-resistant plates. To lessen the quantity of heavy metal leaching, the fly ash was utilized after being washed using a water/fly ash ratio of 2 for one hour. Subsequently, an inexpensive, straightforward molding and curing process was used to create a plate, with a composition of 60%wt of MSWI-FA, 30%wt of gypsum, 0.5%wt of glass fiber and 9.5%wt of vermiculite. The plate exhibited high fire resistance. Furthermore, it demonstrated compression, flexural strength and surface hardness slightly lower than the requirements of European Standards. This allows for manufacturing plates with a high washed MSWI-FA content as fire protection in firewalls and doors for homes and commercial buildings. A Life Cycle Assessment was carried out. The case study shows that a 60% substitution of gypsum resulted in an environmental impact reduction of 8-48% for all impact categories examined, except four categories impacts (marine eutrophication, human toxicity (cancer), human non-carcinogenic toxicity and water depletion, where it increased between 2 and 718 times), due to the previous washing of MSWI-FA. When these fly ashes are used as a raw material in fire-resistant materials, they may be recycled and offer environmental advantages over more conventional materials like gypsum.

Fate of Cl and chlorination mechanism during municipal solid waste incineration fly ash reutilization using thermal treatment: a review

Safe and sustainable treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is urgently needed worldwide because of its high heavy metals, dioxin, and chlorine (Cl) contents. Thermal treatment is widely considered as a promising method for treating MSWI FA owing to its high toxic content removal efficiency and resource recovery; however, residual Cl is a concurrent critical problem faced during reutilisation of thermal treatment products. This review summarises the innovative thermal treatment methods of MSWI FA, such as those employed in production of cement, lightweight aggregates, glass slag, and metal alloys. The characteristics of Cl in MSWI FA, removal rate, transformation of water-soluble Cl into water-insoluble Cl, and the effect of different influencing factors such as temperature, composition, superheated steam, and mechanical pressure were analysed. The volatilization and decomposition of NaCl, KCl and CaClOH dominates Cl removal; however, the degradation of organic Cl and heavy metal chlorination volatilization process that generate HCl and heavy metal chlorides, respectively, also contributed to Cl removal. To promote the reutilisation of MSWI FA-based products, the leaching behaviour of residual Cl in products obtained by different thermal treatments was investigated.
