Engineering of Iron-Based Magnetic Activated Carbon Fabrics for Environmental Remediation

Synthesis of a Graphene-Encapsulated Fe3C/Fe Catalyst Supported on Sporopollenin Exine Capsules and Its Use for the Reverse Water-Gas Shift Reaction

Bioderived materials have emerged as sustainable catalyst supports for several heterogeneous reactions owing to their naturally occurring hierarchal pore size distribution, high surface area, and thermal and chemical stability. We utilize sporopollenin exine capsules (SpECs), a carbon-rich byproduct of pollen grains, composed primarily of polymerized and cross-linked lipids, to synthesize carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles via evaporative precipitation and pyrolytic treatments. The composition and morphology of the macroparticles were influenced by the precursor iron acetate concentration. Most significantly, the formation of crystalline phases (Fe3C, α-Fe, and graphite) detected via X-ray diffraction spectroscopy showed a critical dependence on iron loading. Significantly, the characteristic morphology and structure of the SpECs were largely preserved after high-temperature pyrolysis. Analysis of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, the D and G bands from Raman spectroscopy, and the relative ratio of the C=C to C-C bonding from high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that porosity, surface area, and degree of graphitization were easily tuned by varying the Fe loading. A mechanism for the formation of crystalline phases and meso-porosity during the pyrolysis process is also proposed. SpEC-Fe10% proved to be highly active and selective for the reverse water-gas shift reaction at high temperatures (>600 °C).

Mechanochemically Synthesised Flexible Electrodes Based on Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Glasses for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The melting behaviour of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has aroused significant research interest in the areas of materials science, condensed matter physics and chemical engineering. This work first introduces a novel method to fabricate a bimetallic MOF glass, through melt-quenching of the cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) [ZIF-62(Co)] with an adsorbed ferric coordination complex. The high-temperature chemically reactive ZIF-62(Co) liquid facilitates the formation of coordinative bonds between Fe and imidazolate ligands, incorporating Fe nodes into the framework after quenching. The resultant Co-Fe bimetallic MOF glass therefore shows a significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance. The novel bimetallic MOF glass, when combined with the facile and scalable mechanochemical synthesis technique for both discrete powders and surface coatings on flexible substrates, enables significant opportunities for catalytic device assembly.

Smart Adsorbents for Aquatic Environmental Remediation

A noticeable interest and steady rise in research studies reporting the design and assessment of smart adsorbents for sequestering aqueous metal ions and xenobiotics has occurred in the last decade. This motivates compiling and reviewing the characteristics, potentials, and performances of this new adsorbent generation's metal ion and xenobiotics sequestration. Herein, stimuli-responsive adsorbents that respond to its media (as internal triggers; e.g., pH and temperature) or external triggers (e.g., magnetic field and light) are highlighted. Readers are then introduced to selective adsorbents that selectively capture materials of interest. This is followed by a discussion of self-healing and self-cleaning adsorbents. Finally, the review ends with research gaps in material designs.

Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles Immobilized on Activated Carbon Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Activity Enhancement Study and Its Application on Textiles Fabrics

This research aimed to enhance the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3) using aloe vera extract. It was performed by means of incorporating AgNPs on an activated carbon nanoparticle (ACNPs) under ultrasonic agitation (40 kHz, 2 × 50 watt) for 30 min in an aqueous colloidal medium. The successful AgNPs synthesis was clarified with both Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometers. The successful AgNPs-ACNPs incorporation and its particle size analysis was performed using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The brown color suspension generation and UV-Vis's spectra maximum wavelength at around 480 nm confirmed the existence of AgNPs. The particle sizes of the produced AgNPs were about 5 to 10 nm in the majority number, which collectively surrounded the aloe vera extract secondary metabolites formed core-shell like nanostructure of 8.20 ± 2.05 nm in average size, while ACNPs themselves were about 20.10 ± 1.52 nm in average size formed particles cluster, and 48.00 ± 8.37 nm in average size as stacking of other particles. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs and AgNPs-immobilized ACNPs was 57.58% and 63.64%, respectively (for E. coli); 61.25%, and 93.49%, respectively (for S. aureus). In addition, when the AgNPs-immobilized ACNPs material was coated on the cotton and polyester fabrics, the antibacterial activity of the materials changed, becoming 19.23% (cotton; E. coli), 31.73% (polyester; E. coli), 13.36% (cotton; S. aureus), 21.15% (polyester; S. aureus).

Synthesis of the magnetic core-shell bi-metallic and tri-metallic metal-organic framework nanocomposites for dye adsorption

Bi-metallic and tri-metallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) supported on the magnetic activated carbon (MAC) were synthesized for the reduction of methylene blue (MB) concentration in the aqueous solutions. The adsorbent nanocomposites were characterized by applying the general tests including XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, BET, and VSM. The XRD achievements demonstrated that crystalline structure of MOFs was derived on the MAC by the presented method. The core-shell morphology with nano-scale size of the magnetic carbonaceous MOFs was detected in TEM and FESEM micro-images. The acceptable magnetic strength of the prepared adsorbents was proved by using the VSM analysis. The important operating conditions including pH and temperature were also evaluated, while the other parameters were kept constant. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was matched with the experimental data to show the kinetic behavior of the multi-component MOFs. The isotherm studies showed that the good agreement between the experimental data with both Langmuir model and the maximum capacities was calculated to be about 66.51 and 71.43 mg/g for the bi-metallic and tri-metallic nanocomposites, respectively. Regeneration experiments indicated that the fabricated adsorbents have an excellent reusing adsorption capacity which can be a proper selection for the industrial applications. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Bi-metallic and tri-metallic MOFs supported on the magnetic activated carbon were synthesized by the facile preparation method. Adsorption of methylene blue by using MOFs were successfully done. Nanocomposites were evaluated by XRD, FTIR, BET, FESEM, TEM, and VSM techniques. Maximum of adsorption capacity was observed for tri-metallic MOF as 71.43 mg/g.

Synthesis and Characterization of Wooden Magnetic Activated Carbon Fibers with Hierarchical Pore Structures

Wooden magnetic activated carbon fibers (WMACFs) with hierarchical pore structures were obtained by adding magnetic iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles into the liquefied wood. The structures and properties of WMACFs were analyzed by scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ adsorption, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results showed that WMACFs had high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (1578 m²/g) and total pore volume (0.929 cm³/g), of which 45% was the contribution of small mesopores of 2⁻3 nm. It is believed that Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles play an important role in the formation of hierarchical pores. With the Fe₃O₄ content increasing, the yield rate of WMACFs decreased, and the Fe₃O₄ crystal plane diffraction peaks and characteristic adsorption peaks were obviously observed. At the same time, it was also found that WMACFs had favorable magnetic properties when the Fe₃O₄ content was above 1.5%. As a result, WMACFs could be a promising candidate for high efficiency, low cost, and convenient separation for the magnetic field.

ZnII doped and immobilized on functionalized magnetic hydrotalcite (Fe3O4/HT-SMTU-ZnII): a novel, green and magnetically recyclable bifunctional nanocatalyst for the one-pot multi-component synthesis of acridinediones under solvent-free conditions

Herein, the catalytic activity of a novel synthesized Fe₃O₄/HT-SMTU-Zn^II nanocatalyst, in the green and efficient synthesis of acridinediones, is described.

Preparation of SiO2-Protecting Metallic Fe Nanoparticle/SiO2 Composite Spheres for Biomedical Application

Functionalized Fe nanoparticles (NPs) have played an important role in biomedical applications. In this study, metallic Fe NPs were deposited on SiO₂ spheres to form a Fe/SiO₂ composite. To protect the Fe from oxidation, a thin SiO₂ layer was coated on the Fe/SiO₂ spheres thereafter. The size and morphology of the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The iron form and its content and magnetic properties were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The biocompatibility of the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres was examined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) tests. The intracellular distribution of the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres was observed using TEM. XRD analysis revealed the formation of metallic iron on the surface of the SiO₂ spheres. According to the ICP-MS and SQUID results, using 0.375 M FeCl₃·6H₂O for Fe NPs synthesis resulted in the highest iron content and magnetization of the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ spheres. Using a dye loading experiment, a slow release of a fluorescence dye from SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres was confirmed. The SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres co-cultured with L929 cells exhibit biocompatibility at concentrations <16.25 µg/mL. The TEM images show that the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres were uptaken into the cytoplasm and retained in the endosome. The above results demonstrate that the SiO₂@Fe/SiO₂ composite spheres could be used as a multi-functional agent, such as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent or drug carriers in biomedical applications.

Magnetic graphene-carbon nanotube iron nanocomposites as adsorbents and antibacterial agents for water purification

One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is to provide clean and affordable water through protecting source and purifying polluted waters. This review presents advances made in the synthesis of carbon- and iron-based nanomaterials, graphene-carbon nanotubes-iron oxides, which can remove pollutants and inactivate virus and bacteria efficiently in water. The three-dimensional graphene and graphene oxide based nanostructures exhibit large surface area and sorption sites that provide higher adsorption capacity to remove pollutants than two-dimensional graphene-based adsorbents and other conventional adsorbents. Examples are presented to demonstrate removal of metals (e.g., Cu, Pb, Cr(VI), and As) and organics (e.g., dyes and oil) by grapheme-based nanostructures. Inactivation of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species (e.g., Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) is also shown. A mechanism involving the interaction of adsorbents and pollutants is briefly discussed. Magnetic graphene-based nanomaterials can easily be separated from the treated water using an external magnet; however, there are challenges in implementing the graphene-based nanotechnology in treating real water.
