Synthesis and Characterization of Gd₂O₃ Hollow Microspheres Using a Template-Directed Method

Novel Scintillating Nanoparticles for Potential Application in Photodynamic Cancer Therapy

The development of X-ray-absorbing scintillating nanoparticles is of high interest for solving the short penetration depth problem of visible and infrared light in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Thus, these nanoparticles are considered a promising treatment for several types of cancer. Herein, gadolinium oxide nanoparticles doped with europium ions (Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺) were obtained by using polyvinyl alcohol as a capping agent. Hybrid silica nanoparticles decorated with europium-doped gadolinium oxide (SiO₂-Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺) were also prepared through the impregnation method. The synthesized nanoparticles were structurally characterized and tested to analyze their biocompatibility. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the high crystallinity and purity of the Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ particles and the homogeneous distribution of nanostructured rare earth oxides throughout the fumed silica matrix for SiO₂-Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺. Both nanoparticles displayed stable negative ζ-potentials. The photoluminescence properties of the materials were obtained using a Xe lamp as an excitation source, and they exhibited characteristic Eu³⁺ bands, including at 610 nm, which is the most intense transition band of this ion. Cytotoxicity studies on mouse glioblastoma GL261 cells indicated that these materials appear to be nontoxic from 10 to 500 μg·mL^-1 and show a small reduction in viability in non-tumor cell lines. All these findings demonstrate their possible use as alternative materials in PDT.

CO2 Sorbents Based on Spherical Carbon and Photoactive Metal Oxides: Insight into Adsorption Capacity, Selectivity and Regenerability

This work aimed to obtain hybrid composites based on photoactive metal oxide and carbon having adsorption properties. The materials, composed of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and spherical carbon, were obtained from resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, treated in a solvothermal reactor heated with microwaves and then subjected to carbonization, were received. The functional groups of pure carbon spheres (unsaturated stretching C=C, stretching C−OH and C−H bending vibrations), CS/ZnO and CS/TiO₂ samples were determined by FT-IR analysis. The characteristic bands for ZnO and TiO₂ were observed below 1000 cm⁻¹. The thermal oxidative properties are similar for TiO₂- and ZnO-modified carbon spheres. We have observed that the increased carbon sphere content in nanocomposites results in starting the decomposition process at a lower temperature, therefore, nanocomposites have a broader combustion temperature range. The effect of the oxides’ addition to carbon spheres on their adsorption properties was evaluated in detail by examining CO₂ adsorption from the gas phase. The selectivity of CO₂ over N₂ at a temperature of 25 °C and pressure of 1 bar (a novelty in testing CS-based sorbents) calculated for 3.00 CS/TiO₂ and 4.00 CS/ZnO was 15.09 and 16.95, respectively. These nanocomposites exhibit excellent cyclic stability checked over 10 consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

Synthesis of Gd2O3 Nanoparticles and Their Photocatalytic Activity for Degradation of Azo Dyes

Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanoparticles were prepared via the reaction of gadolinium nitrate hexahydrate (Gd (NO3)3·6H2O) and ethylamine (C2H5NH2), and their surface morphology, particle size, and properties were examined by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The Gd2O3 nanoparticles were used as the photocatalyst for the degradation of various azo dyes, such as methyl orange (MO), acid orange 7 (AO7), and acid yellow 23 (AY23) under irradiation with UV light. The effect of the experimental parameters (initial concentration of azo dyes, dosage of catalyst, and wavelength of UV light) on the photocatalytic properties of the Gd2O3 nanoparticles were investigated. At a constant H2O2 concentration, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the Gd2O3 nanoparticles for various azo dyes was in the order: methyl orange > acid orange 7 > acid yellow 23. The kinetics study showed that the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes was followed by a pseudo first-order reaction rate law.

Biomedical Waste Management by Using Nanophotocatalysts: The Need for New Options

Biomedical waste management is getting significant consideration among treatment technologies, since insufficient management can cause danger to medicinal service specialists, patients, and their environmental conditions. The improvement of waste administration protocols, plans, and policies are surveyed, despite setting up training programs on legitimate waste administration for all healthcare service staff. Most biomedical waste substances do not degrade in the environment, and may also not be thoroughly removed through treatment processes. Therefore, the long-lasting persistence of biomedical waste can effectively have adverse impact on wildlife and human beings, as well. Hence, photocatalysis is gaining increasing attention for eradication of pollutants and for improving the safety and clearness of the environment due to its great potential as a green and eco-friendly process. In this regard, nanostructured photocatalysts, in contrast to their regular counterparts, exhibit significant attributes such as non-toxicity, low cost and higher absorption efficiency in a wider range of the solar spectrum, making them the best candidate to employ for photodegradation. Due to these unique properties of nanophotocatalysts for biomedical waste management, we aim to critically evaluate various aspects of these materials in the present review and highlight their importance in healthcare service settings.

Aqueous dispersible green luminescent yttrium oxide:terbium microspheres with nanosilica shell coating

Tb-doped Y₂O₃ microspheres (MSs) were prepared via a homogeneous thermal degradation process at a low temperature and then coated with a nanosilica shell (Y₂O₃:Tb@SiO₂) using a sol-gel process. The core MSs were highly crystalline and spherical with a porous surface, single cubic phase, and particle size of 100-250 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images clearly showed the spherical shape of the as-prepared core MSs, which were fully covered with a thick and mesoporous nanosilica shell. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra displayed the well-resolved infrared absorption peaks of silica (SiO, SiOSi, etc.), confirming the presence of the silica surface coating. The core MSs retained their spherical shape even after heat treatment and subsequent silica surface coating. It was observed that the core/shell MSs are easily dispersible in aqueous media and form a semi-transparent colloidal solution. Ultraviolet/visible and zeta potential studies were tested to prove the changes in the surface chemistry of the as-designed core/shell MSs and compare with their core counterpart. The growth of the amorphous silica shell not only increased the particle size but also enhanced remarkably the solubility and colloidal stability of the MSs in aqueous media. The strongest emission lines originating from the characteristic intra-shell 4f-4f electronic transitions of Tb ions were quenched after silica layer deposition, but the MSs still showed strong green (⁵D₄ → ⁷F₅ at 530-560 nm as most dominant) emission efficiency, which indicates great potential in fluorescent bio-probes. The emission intensity is discussed in relation to the quenching mechanism induced by surface silanol (Si-OH) groups, particle size, and surface charge.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photocatalytic Activity of Nanocrystalline First Transition-Metal (Ti, Mn, Co, Ni and Zn) Oxisde Nanofibers by Electrospinning

In this work, five nanocrystalline first transition-metal (Ti, Mn, Co, Ni and Zn) oxide nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and controlled calcination. The morphology, crystal structure, pore size distribution and specific surface area were systematically studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), surface and pore analysis, and thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results reveal that the obtained nanofibers have a continuously twisted three-dimensional scaffold structure and are composed of neat nanocrystals with a necklace-like arrangement. All the samples possess high specific surface areas, which follow the order of NiO nanofiber (393.645 m2/g) > TiO2 nanofiber (121.445 m2/g) > ZnO nanofiber (57.219 m2/g) > Co3O4 nanofiber (52.717 m2/g) > Mn2O3 nanofiber (18.600 m2/g). Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was investigated in detail by employing the five kinds of metal oxide nanofibers as photocatalysts under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation separately. The results show that ZnO, TiO2 and NiO nanofibers exhibit excellent photocatalytic efficiency and high cycling ability to MB, which may be ascribed to unique porous structures and the highly efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In brief, this paper aims to provide a feasible approach to achieve five first transition-metal oxide nanofibers with excellent performance, which is important for practical applications.

Preparation and sound absorption properties of barium titanate/nitrile butadiene rubber-polyurethane foam composites with stratified structure

Barium titanate/nitrile butadiene rubber (BT/NBR) and polyurethane (PU) foam were combined to prepare sound-absorbing materials with different stratified structures including a double-layer structure and alternating multilayered structure, respectively. The effects of the cell size of the PU foam and the thickness of the PU foam layer on the sound absorption efficiency of the BT/NBR-PU foam composite with a double-layer structure were studied, and the effects of the alternating unit number on the sound absorption efficiency of the BT/NBR-PU foam composite with an alternating multilayered structure were studied. The results show that the sound absorption peak of the double-layer structure composites would move toward low frequency with a decrease of the cell size of the PU foam or with an increase the thickness of the PU foam layer. With increasing alternating unit number, the composites with an alternating multilayered structure have good sound absorption performance in a wider frequency bandwidth. The sound absorption frequency range of the stratified composite could be adjusted by changing the cell size of the PU foam, the thickness of the PU foam layer and the alternating unit number. Each stratified structure BT/NBR-PU foam, whether with a double-layer structure or alternating multilayered structure, shows excellent sound absorption efficiency at low frequency owing to the combination of airflow resistivity, resonance absorption and interface dissipation.

Barium titanate/nitrile butadiene rubber (BT/NBR) and polyurethane (PU) foam were combined to prepare a sound-absorbing material with an alternating multilayered structure. The effects of the cell size of PU foam and the alternating unit number on the sound absorption property of the material were investigated. The results show that the sound absorption efficiency at a low frequency increased when decreasing the cell size of PU foam layer. With the increasing of the alternating unit number, the material shows the sound absorption effect in a wider bandwidth of frequency. The BT/NBR-PU foam composites with alternating multilayered structure have an excellent sound absorption property at low frequency due to the organic combination of airflow resistivity, resonance absorption, and interface dissipation.
