Using Additives for Fouling Control in a Lab-Scale MBR; Comparing the Anti-Fouling Potential of Coagulants, PAC and Bio-Film Carriers

The impact of powdered activated carbon types on membrane anti-fouling mechanism in membrane bioreactors

Dosing powdered activated carbon (PAC) has been proven to be an economical and effective method to mitigate membrane fouling. However, the effects of pretreated PAC with different redox properties on membrane fouling still need to be further investigated. Here, the impact of commercial PAC, oxidized-PAC, and reduced-PAC on membrane fouling was investigated in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). Surprisingly, the filtration cycles were extended from 12-36 h to 132-156 h only by dosing reduced-PAC and commercial PAC with a finial dosage of 3 g/L, which were provided with reductive properties. However, few improvements of filtration cycle (less than 50 h) were achieved by dosing oxidized-PAC in the same dosage, which had the same adsorption performance as reduced-PAC and commercial PAC. The biomass and foulant concentration suggested that the enhanced anti-fouling performances by PAC with reductive properties were mainly attributed to the reduction of extracellular polymer substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) content in the bulk solutions after 14 days of continuous operation. The model foulant degradation tests and the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) images of activated sludge further demonstrated that PAC with reductive properties directly affected the microbial activities by controlling the EPS and SMP concentrations in the bulk solution, thereby suppressing membrane fouling. Such a finding provides new insights into anti-fouling mechanisms that the redox properties of PAC played a decisive role in membrane fouling mitigation, and also provides a strategy to prolong the anti-fouling effects by restoring the reductive properties of PAC. A review of ammonia removal using a biofilm-based reactor and its challenges

Extensive growth of industries leads to uncontrolled ammonia releases to environment. This can result in significant degradation of the aquatic ecology as well as significant health concerns for humans. Knowing the mechanism of ammonia elimination is the simplest approach to comprehending it. Ammonia has been commonly converted to less hazardous substances either in the form of nitrate or nitrogen gas. Ammonia has been converted into nitrite by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and further reduced to nitrate by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in aerobic conditions. Denitrification takes place in an anoxic phase and nitrate is converted into nitrogen gas. It is challenging to remove ammonia by employing technologies that do not incur particularly high costs. Thus, this review paper is focused on biofilm reactors that utilize the nitrification process. Many research publications and patents on biofilm wastewater treatment have been published. However, only a tiny percentage of these projects are for full-scale applications, and the majority of the work was completed within the last few decades. The physicochemical approaches such as ammonia adsorption, coagulation-flocculation, and membrane separation, as well as conventional biological treatments including activated sludge, microalgae, and bacteria biofilm, are briefly addressed in this review paper. The effectiveness of biofilm reactors in removing ammonia was compared, and the microbes that effectively remove ammonia were thoroughly discussed. Overall, biofilm reactors can remove up to 99.7% ammonia from streams with a concentration in range of 16-900 mg/L. As many challenges were identified for ammonia removal using biofilm at a commercial scale, this study offers future perspectives on how to address the most pressing biofilm issues. This review may also improve our understanding of biofilm technologies for the removal of ammonia as well as polishing unit in wastewater treatment plants for the water reuse and recycling, supporting the circular economy concept.

Comparative Study of Different Production Methods of Activated Carbon Cathodic Electrodes in Single Chamber MFC Treating Municipal Landfill Leachate

The treatment of real waste extracts with simultaneous energy production is currently under research. One method of addressing this dual task is using biochemical reactors named microbial fuel cells (MFCs). MFCs consist of a bioanode and a cathode where the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurs. Cathodes are currently under optimization regarding the nature of their support, their catalytic efficiency and their configurations. In this work, we present facile preparation methods for the production of activated carbon ceramic-supported cathodic electrodes produced with three different techniques (wash-coat, brush-coat, and ultrasound-assisted deposition/infiltration). The produced cathodic electrodes were tested in a single-chamber MFC, filled with the concentrated liquid residue, after the reverse osmosis (RO-CLR) treatment of leachate from a municipal waste landfill, in order to exploit their electrochemical potential for simultaneous waste treatment and energy production. The electrode produced utilizing 20 kHz ultrasounds proved to be more effective in terms of energy harvesting (10.7 mW/g·L of leachate) and wastewater treatment (COD removal 85%). Internal resistances of the ultrasound-produced electrodes are lower, as compared to the other two methods, opening new exploitation pathways in the use of ultrasound as a means in producing electrodes for microbial fuel cells.

Effect of Operating Conditions on Membrane Fouling in Pilot-Scale MBRs; Filaments Growth, Diminishing Dissolved Oxygen and Recirculation Rate of the Activated Sludge

This is the first study that examines the effect of operating conditions on fouling of Membrane Bio-Reactors (MBRs), which treat municipal wastewater in field conditions, with specific regard to the controlled development of filamentous microorganisms (or filaments). The novelty of the present work is extended to minimize the dissolved oxygen (DO) in recirculated activated sludge for improving the process of denitrification. For this purpose, two pilot-scale MBRs were constructed and operated in parallel: (i) Filament-MBR, where an attempt was made to regulate the growth of filaments by adjustment of DO, the Food-to-Microorganisms (F/M) ratio and temperature, and (ii) Control-MBR, where a gentle stirring tank was employed for the purpose of zeroing the DO in the recycled sludge. Results showed that low temperature (<15 °C) slightly increased the number of filaments in the Filament-MBR which, in turn, decreased the Trans-Membrane Pressure (TMP). As the Soluble Microbial Products (SMP) and the colloids are considered to be the basic foulants of membranes in MBR systems, specific attention was directed to keep their concentration at low values in the mixed liquor. The low F/M ratio in the aeration tanks which preceded the membrane tank was achieved to keep the SMP proteins and carbohydrates at very low values in the mixed liquor, i.e., less than 6 mg/L. Moreover, as a result of the low recirculation rate (2.6∙Q_in), good aggregation of the produced excess sludge was achieved, and low concentration of colloids with a size ≤50 nm (nearly the membranes’ pore size used for filtration/separation) was measured, accounted for maximum 15% of the total colloids. Additionally, the increase in filamentous population at the Filament-MBR contributed to the further reduction of colloids in the mixed liquor at 7.9%, contributing beneficially to the reduction of TMP and of membrane fouling. The diminishing of DO in the recirculated sludge improved denitrification, and resulted in lower concentrations of Ν-NO₃⁻ and TN in the effluent of the Control-MBR. Furthermore, the recirculation rate of Q_r = 2.6∙Q_in, in comparison with Q_r = 4.3∙Q_in, resulted in improved performance regarding the removal of N-NH₄⁺. Finally, high organics removal and ammonium nitrification was observed in the effluent of both pilots, since COD and Ν-ΝH₄⁺ concentrations were generally in the range of 10–25 mg/L and <0.1 mg/L, respectively.

Fouling of membranes in membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment: Planktonic bacteria can have a significant contribution

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for wastewater treatment show great potentials in the sustainable development of urban environments. However, fouling of membranes remains the largest challenge of MBR technology. Dissolved extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are often assumed be the main foulant in MBRs. However, single bacterial cells are often erroneously measured as EPS in traditional spectrophotometric analysis of EPS in activated sludge, so we hypothesized that single cells in many cases could be the true foulants in MBRs for wastewater treatment. To study this, raw MBR sludge and sludge supernatant with varying concentrations of planktonic cells were filtered on microfiltration (MF) membranes, and we found a direct correlation between the cell count and rate of flux decline. Addition of planktonic cells to fresh MBR sludge dramatically increased the flux decline. The identity of the most abundant planktonic cells in a full-scale MBR water resource recovery facility was determined by DNA fingerprinting. Many of these genera are known to be abundant in influent wastewater suggesting that the influent bacterial cells may have a direct effect on the fouling propensity in MBR systems. This new knowledge may lead to new anti-fouling strategies targeting incoming planktonic bacteria from the wastewater feed. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Planktonic cells constituted up to 60% of the total protein content of "soluble extracellular polymeric substances" in membrane bioreactor sludge. Planktonic cells are hidden under a surrogate concentration of extracellular polymeric substances which is often associated with fouling. Membrane fouling rate is directly proportional to amount of free planktonic cells suspended in sludge. Several influent bacterial genera are enriched in the water phase of membrane bioreactor sludge. Removing these may mitigate fouling.

Performance of a Micro-Scale Membrane Reactor for Greywater Treatment at Household Level

An aerated membrane reactor (25 L working volume) equipped with 1.5 m² hollow-fiber module was designed and operated using synthetic greywater for household water reuse. Activated sludge (MBR), activated carbon (PAC), zeolite (ZEO) and iron hydroxide (GEH) were added in separate experiments to optimize membrane hydraulic performance and removal efficiency of organics. The use of additives improved permeate quality (in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand—COD) compared to the direct membrane filtration mode of operation. GEH and MBR were efficient for phosphorus removal, which was not the case for PAC and ZEO. No significant improvement of membrane flux was recorded when PAC, ZEO or GEH were added inside the membrane tank. The MBR system displayed optimum performance during medium-term operation, with COD removal efficiency 85% and permeate flux between 40 and 25 L m⁻² h⁻¹. The capital costs of the proposed technology were around 300 € and the operational costs below 80 € yr⁻¹, rendering the process feasible at household level. Greywater treatment systems for household applications are still on their infancy; however, this trend is expected to change due public perception towards circular economy, water conservation and reuse.

Quantifying the Effect of COD to TN Ratio, DO Concentration and Temperature on Filamentous Microorganisms’ Population and Trans-Membrane Pressure (TMP) in Membrane Bio-Reactors (MBR)

Using moderate populations of filaments in the biomass of Membrane Bio-Reactors (MBRs) is a biological anti-fouling method which has been increasingly applied over the last few years. This study aims to quantify the effect of COD to TN ratio, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration and temperature on filaments’ population and Trans-Membrane Pressure (TMP) in a pilot-scale MBR, with a view to reducing membrane fouling. The novelty of the present work concerns the development of a mathematical equation that correlates fouling rate (dTMP/dt) with the population of filamentous microorganisms, assessed by the Filament Index (FI), and with the concentration of the carbohydrate fraction of Soluble Microbial Products (SMPc). Apart from TMP and SMPc, other fouling-related biomass characteristics, such as sludge filterability and settleability, were also examined. It was shown that at high COD to TN ratio (10:1), low DO concentration in the filaments’ tank (0.5 ± 0.3 mg/L) and high temperature (24–30 °C), a moderate population of filaments is developed (FI = 1–2), which delays the TMP rise. Under these conditions, sludge filterability and settleability were also enhanced. Finally, TMP data analysis showed that the fouling rate is affected by FI and SMPc concentration mainly in the long-term fouling stage and increases exponentially with their increase.
