Adsorption of iodine in metal-organic framework materials

Nuclear power will continue to provide energy for the foreseeable future, but it can pose significant challenges in terms of the disposal of waste and potential release of untreated radioactive substances. Iodine is a volatile product from uranium fission and is particularly problematic due to its solubility. Different isotopes of iodine present different issues for people and the environment. 129I has an extremely long half-life of 1.57 × 107 years and poses a long-term environmental risk due to bioaccumulation. In contrast, 131I has a shorter half-life of 8.02 days and poses a significant risk to human health. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop secure, efficient and economic stores to capture and sequester ionic and neutral iodine residues. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are a new generation of solid sorbents that have wide potential applicability for gas adsorption and substrate binding, and recently there is emerging research on their use for the selective adsorptive removal of iodine. Herein, we review the state-of-the-art performance of MOFs for iodine adsorption and their host-guest chemistry. Various aspects are discussed, including establishing structure-property relationships between the functionality of the MOF host and iodine binding. The techniques and methodologies used for the characterisation of iodine adsorption and of iodine-loaded MOFs are also discussed together with strategies for designing new MOFs that show improved performance for iodine adsorption.

A photoprogrammable electronic nose with switchable selectivity for VOCs using MOF films

Advanced analytical applications require smart materials and sensor systems that are able to adapt or be configured to specific tasks. Based on reversible photochemistry in nanoporous materials, we present a sensor array with a selectivity that is reversibly controlled by light irradiation. The active material of the sensor array, or electronic nose (e-nose), is based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with photoresponsive fluorinated azobenzene groups that can be optically switched between their trans and cis state. By irradiation with light of different wavelengths, the trans-cis ratio can be modulated. Here we use four trans-cis values as defined states and employ a four-channel quartz-crystal microbalance for gravimetrically monitoring the molecular uptake by the MOF films. We apply the photoprogrammable e-nose to the sensing of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and analyze the sensor array data with simple machine-learning algorithms. When the sensor array is in a state with all sensors either in the same trans- or cis-rich state, cross-sensitivity between the analytes occurs and the classification accuracy is not ideal. Remarkably, the VOC molecules between which the sensor array shows cross-sensitivity vary by switching the entire sensor array from trans to cis. By selectively programming the e-nose with light of different colors, each sensor exhibits a different isomer ratio and thus a different VOC affinity, based on the polarity difference between the trans- and cis-azobenzenes. In such photoprogrammed state, the cross-sensitivity is reduced and the selectivity is enhanced, so that the e-nose can perfectly identify the tested VOCs. This work demonstrates for the first time the potential of photoswitchable and thus optically configurable materials as active sensing material in an e-nose for intelligent molecular sensing. The concept is not limited to QCM-based azobenzene-MOF sensors and can also be applied to diverse sensing materials and photoswitches.

Kinetically Controlled Linker Binding in Rare Earth-2,5-Dihydroxyterepthalic Acid Metal-Organic Frameworks and Its Predicted Effects on Acid Gas Adsorption

In the pursuit of highly stable and selective metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorption of caustic acid gas species, an entire series of rare earth MOFs have been explored. Each of the MOFs in this series (RE-DOBDC; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; DOBDC = 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid) was synthesized in the tetragonal space group I4/m. Crystallized MOF samples, specifically Eu-DOBDC, were seen to have a combination of monodentate and bidentate binding when synthesized under typical reaction conditions, resulting in a contortion of the structure. However, extended crystallization times determined that this binding is kinetically controlled and that the monodentate binding option was crystallographically eliminated by extended reaction times at higher temperatures. Furthermore, this series allows for the direct study of the effect of the metal center on the structure of the of the MOF; herein, the lanthanide metal ionic radii contraction across the periodic table results in a reduction of the MOF pore size and lattice parameters. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy was used to investigate the stages of crystal growth for these RE-DOBDC MOFs. All MOFs, except Er-DOBDC had a minimum of two stages of growth. These analogues were demonstrated by analysis of neutron diffraction (PND) to exhibit a cooperative rotational distortion of the secondary building unit, resulting in two crystallographically distinct linker sublattices. Computational modeling efforts were used to show distinct differences on acid gas (NO₂ and SO₂) binding energies for RE-DOBDC MOFs when comparing the monodentate/bidentate combined linker with the bidentate-only linker crystal structures.
