Mussel-Inspired Surface Functionalization of AEM for Simultaneously Improved Monovalent Anion Selectivity and Antibacterial Property

Enhanced Mono/Divalent Ion Separation via Charged Interlayer Channels in Montmorillonite-Based Membranes

Efficient mono- and divalent ion separation is pivotal for environmental conservation and energy utilization. Two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring interlayer nanochannels exhibit unique water and ion transport properties, rendering them highly suitable for water treatment membranes. In this work, we incorporated polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) copolymers into 2D montmorillonite (MMT) nanosheet interlayer channels through electrostatic interactions and bioinspired bonding. A modified laminar structure was formed on the substrate surface via a straightforward vacuum filtration. The electrodialysis experiments reveal that these membranes could achieve monovalent permselectivity of 11.06 and Na+ flux of 2.09 × 10-8 mol cm-2 s-1. The enhanced permselectivity results from the synergistic effect of electrostatic and steric hindrance effect. In addition, the interaction between the PDA/PEI copolymer and the MMT nanosheet ensures the long-term operational stability of the membranes. Theoretical simulations reveal that Na+ has a lower migration energy barrier and higher migration rate for the modified MMT-based membrane compared to Mg2+. This work presents a novel approach for the development of monovalent permselective membranes.

Composite Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Polystyrene and Cerium(IV) Phosphate with Improved Monovalent-Ion Selectivity and Antifouling Properties

The possibility of targeted change of the properties of ion exchange membranes by incorporation of various nanoparticles into the membranes is attracting the attention of many research groups. Here we studied for the first time the influence of cerium phosphate nanoparticles on the physicochemical and transport properties of commercial anion exchange membranes based on quaternary ammonium-functionalized polystyrenes, such as heterogeneous Ralex^® AM and pseudo-homogeneous Neosepta^® AMX. The incorporation of cerium phosphate on one side of the membrane was performed by precipitation from absorbed cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) anionic complex with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate or phosphoric acid. The structures of the obtained hybrid membranes and separately synthesized cerium phosphate were investigated using FTIR, P31 MAS NMR, EDX mapping, and scanning electron microscopy. The modification increased the membrane selectivity to monovalent ions in the ED desalination of an equimolar mixture of NaCl and Na₂SO₄. The highest selectivities of Ralex^® AM and Neosepta^® AMX-based hybrid membranes were 4.9 and 7.7, respectively. In addition, the modification of Neosepta^® membranes also increased the resistance to a typical anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate.

Cation Exchange Membranes Coated with Polyethyleneimine and Crown Ether to Improve Monovalent Cation Electrodialytic Selectivity

Developing monovalent cation permselective membranes (MCPMs) with high-efficient permselectivity is the core concern in specific industrial applications. In this work, we have fabricated a series of novel cation exchange membranes (CEMs) based on sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) surface modification by polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 4′-aminobenzo-12-crown-4 (12C4) codeposited with dopamine (DA) successively, which was followed by the cross-linking of glutaraldehyde (GA). The as-prepared membranes before and after modification were systematically characterized with regard to their structures as well as their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Particularly, the codeposition sequence of modified ingredients was investigated on galvanostatic permselectivity to cations. The modified membrane (M-12C4-0.50-PEI) exhibits significantly prominent selectivity to Li⁺ ions (PMg2+Li+ = 5.23) and K⁺ ions (PMg2+K+ = 13.56) in Li⁺/Mg²⁺ and K⁺/Mg²⁺ systems in electrodialysis (ED), which is far superior to the pristine membrane (M-0, PMg2+Li+ = 0.46, PMg2+K+ = 1.23) at a constant current density of 5.0 mA·cm⁻². It possibly arises from the synergistic effects of electrostatic repulsion (positively charged PEI), pore-size sieving (distribution of modified ingredients), and specific interaction effect (12C4 ~Li⁺). This facile strategy may provide new insights into developing selective CEMs in the separation of specific cations by ED.

Nitrate-Selective Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared using Discarded Reverse Osmosis Membranes as Support

The present work shows a methodology for the preparation of membranes with a high affinity for nitrates. For this purpose, a polymeric mixture containing an anion exchange resin was extended on a recycled pressure filtration membrane used as mechanical support. Different ion exchange resins were tested. The influence in ion fractionation of (i) the type of ion exchange resin, (ii) the use of a recycled membrane as support and (iii) the operating current density during the separation process were studied. Results revealed that the employed anion exchange resin could tune up the transport numbers of the anions in the membrane and enhance the transport of nitrates over sulfates. The use of the recycled filtration membrane as support further increased the transport of nitrates in detriment of sulfates in nitrate-selective membranes. Moreover, it considerably improved the mechanical stability of the membranes. Lowering the operational current density also boosted ion fractionation. In addition, the use of recycled membranes as support in membrane preparation is presented as an alternative management route of discarded reverse osmosis membranes, coupling with the challenging management of waste generated by the desalination industry. These membranes could be used for nitrate recovery from wastewater or for nitrate separation from groundwater.

Surface Modifications of Anion Exchange Membranes for an Improved Reverse Electrodialysis Process Performance: A Review

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology represents a promising electro-membrane process for renewable energy harvesting from aqueous streams with different salinity. However, the performance of the key components of the system, that is, the ion exchange membranes, is limited by both the presence of multivalent ions and fouling phenomena, thus leading to a reduced generated net power density. In this context, the behavior of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in RED systems is more severely affected, due to the undesirable interactions between their positively charged fixed groups and, mostly negatively charged, foulant materials present in natural streams. Therefore, controlling both the monovalent anion permselectivity and the membrane surface hydrophilicity is crucial. In this respect, different surface modification procedures were considered in the literature, to enhance the above-mentioned properties. This review reports and discusses the currently available approaches for surface modifications of AEMs, such as graft polymerization, dip coating, and layer-by-layer, among others, mainly focusing on preparing monovalent permselective AEMs with antifouling characteristics, but also considering hydrophilicity aspects and identifying the most promising modifying agents to be utilized. Thus, the present study aimed at providing new insights for the further design and development of selective, durable, and cost-effective modified AEMs for an enhanced RED process performance, which is indispensable for a practical implementation of this electro-membrane technology at an industrial scale.

Three-Dimensional Stable Cation-Exchange Membrane with Enhanced Mechanical, Electrochemical, and Antibacterial Performance by in Situ Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles

In this study, a simple and facile approach was proposed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded cation-exchange membranes (CEMs). A wide analytical study involving scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was accomplished to corroborate that the in situ generated AgNPs were uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. In addition, as a result of the proposed synthesis strategy, the cross-linking structure inside the membrane was formed. The proper particle size and dispersibility of the AgNPs improved the mechanical properties of the membranes. Besides, the optimal AgNP-loaded CEM exhibited excellent bacterial killing activities against Gram-negative bacteria and showed a controlled improvement in the electrochemical performance of the prepared membranes. These effects were caused by the obtained distribution of AgNPs near ion-exchange groups that increased the aggregation of water molecules around them, improving the efficiency of ion transport due the formation of array broad ion-transport channels. The optimized CEM [sulfonated polysulfone (60SPSF)-C3#-Ag-2] exhibited an enhanced NaCl removal ratio of 67.5% with a high current efficiency (96.9%) and a low energy consumption (5.84 kWh kg^-1). The distance of the inhibition zone from the boundary of the membrane of SPSF-C3#-Ag-2 reached 4.8 mm. These results led us to suggest that the proposed synthesis strategy may have potential applications in the field of antibacterial and desalting ion-exchange membranes.
