Application of the Flotation Tailings as an Alternative Material for an Acid Mine Drainage Remediation: A Case Study of the Extremely Acidic Lake Robule (Serbia)

Source reduction and end treatment of acid mine drainage in closed coal mines of the Yudong River Basin

After the closure of the Yudong coal mine, the pH value was approximately 3.0, and the Fe and Mn concentrations reached 380 and 69 mg/L, respectively, in the acid mine drainage (AMD), causing serious pollution to the water bodies in the nearby watershed. Combined with the formation conditions of AMD, the comprehensive treatment technology of source reduction-end treatment is adopted to treat the AMD. The treatment area of the goaf is 0.3 km3, the filling and grouting volume is about 6.7 m3, and the curtain grouting volume is 4,000 m3. Through the grouting and sealing treatment in the goaf, the water volume is reduced to less than 85% of the initial volume (100 m3/h). After the end treatment, the pH value of the effluent is around 7.0, the content of Fe and Mn is less than 0.1 mg/L, and the removal rate is above 99%. The project was subsequently operated at RMB 0.85 yuan/t. This project is aimed at the treatment of AMD from small coal mines in complex terrain conditions. It has the characteristics of low cost and high efficiency and can provide an effective treatment technology for AMD in southwestern China and areas with the same geological conditions.

Advances in Understanding of the Application of Unit Operations in Metallurgy of Rare Earth Elements

Unit operations (UO) are mostly used in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy (NFEM) and usually separated into three categories: (1) hydrometallurgy (leaching under atmospheric and high pressure conditions, mixing of solution with gas and mechanical parts, neutralization of solution, precipitation and cementation of metals from solution aiming purification, and compound productions during crystallization), (2) pyrometallurgy (roasting, smelting, refining), and (3) electrometallurgy (aqueous electrolysis and molten salt electrolysis). The high demand for critical metals, such as rare earth elements (REE), indium, scandium, and gallium raises the need for an advance in understanding of the UO in NFEM. The aimed metal is first transferred from ores and concentrates to a solution using a selective dissolution (leaching or dry digestion) under an atmospheric pressure below 1 bar at 100 °C in an agitating glass reactor and under a high pressure (40–50 bar) at high temperatures (below 270 °C) in an autoclave and tubular reactor. The purification of the obtained solution was performed using neutralization agents such as sodium hydroxide and calcium carbonate or more selective precipitation agents such as sodium carbonate and oxalic acid. The separation of metals is possible using liquid (water solution)/liquid (organic phase) extraction (solvent extraction (SX) in mixer-settler) and solid-liquid filtration in chamber filter-press under pressure until 5 bar. Crystallization is the process by which a metallic compound is converted from a liquid into a crystalline state via a supersaturated solution. The final step is metal production using different methods (aqueous electrolysis for basic metals such as copper, zinc, silver, and molten salt electrolysis for REE and aluminum). Advanced processes, such as ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, microwave assisted leaching, and can be combined with reduction processes in order to produce metallic powders. Some preparation for the leaching process is performed via a roasting process in a rotary furnace, where the sulfidic ore was first oxidized in an oxidic form which is a suitable for the metal transfer to water solution. UO in extractive metallurgy of REE can be successfully used not only for the metal wining from primary materials, but also for its recovery from secondary materials.

Submarine Tailings in Chile—A Review

This review aims to understand the environmental impact that tailings produce on the land and marine ecosystem. Issues related to flora, fauna, and the environment are revised. In the first instance, the origin of the treatment and disposal of marine mining waste in Chile and other countries is studied. The importance of tailings’ valuable elements is analyzed through mineralogy, chemical composition, and oceanographic interactions. Several tailings’ treatments seek to recover valuable minerals and mitigate environmental impacts through leaching, bioleaching, and flotation methods. The analysis was complemented with the particular legislative framework for every country, highlighting those with formal regulations for the disposal of tailings in a marine environment. The available registry on flora and fauna affected by the discharge of toxic metals is explored. As a study case, the “Playa Verde” project is detailed, which recovers copper from marine tailings, and uses phytoremediation to neutralize toxic metals. Countries must regularize the disposal of marine tailings due to the significant impact on the marine ecosystem. The implementation of new technologies is necessary to recover valuable elements and reduce mining waste.
