Additive Manufacture of Small-Scale Metamaterial Structures for Acoustic and Ultrasonic Applications

Advanced Ultrasound Energy Transfer Technologies using Metamaterial Structures

Wireless energy transfer (WET) based on ultrasound-driven generators with enormous beneficial functions, is technologically in progress by the valuation of ultrasonic metamaterials (UMMs) in science and engineering domains. Indeed, novel metamaterial structures can develop the efficiency of mechanical and physical features of ultrasound energy receivers (US-ETs), including ultrasound-driven piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (US-PENGs and US-TENGs) for advantageous applications. This review article first summarizes the fundamentals, classification, and design engineering of UMMs after introducing ultrasound energy for WET technology. In addition to addressing using UMMs, the topical progress of innovative UMMs in US-ETs is conceptually presented. Moreover, the advanced approaches of metamaterials are reported in the categorized applications of US-PENGs and US-TENGs. Finally, some current perspectives and encounters of UMMs in US-ETs are offered. With this objective in mind, this review explores the potential revolution of reliable integrated energy transfer systems through the transformation of metamaterials into ultrasound-driven active mediums for generators.

An adjustable acoustic metamaterial cell using a magnetic membrane for tunable resonance

Acoustic metamaterials are growing in popularity for sound applications including noise control. Despite this, there remain significant challenges associated with the fabrication of these materials for the sub-100 Hz regime, because acoustic metamaterials for such frequencies typically require sub-mm scale features to control sound waves. Advances in additive manufacturing technologies have provided practical methods for rapid fabrication of acoustic metamaterials. However, there is a relatively high sensitivity of their resonant characteristics to sub-mm deviations in geometry, pushing the limits of additive manufacturing. One way of overcoming this is via active control of device resonance. Here, an acoustic metamaterial cell with adjustable resonance is demonstrated for the sub-100 Hz regime. A functionally superparamagnetic membrane-devised to facilitate the fabrication process by eliminating magnetic poling requirements-is engineered using stereolithography, and its mechanical and acoustic properties are experimentally measured using laser Doppler vibrometry and electret microphone testing, with a mathematical model developed to predict the cell response. It is demonstrated that an adjustable magnetic acoustic metamaterial can be fabricated at ultra-subwavelength dimensions ( ≤ λ /77.5), exhibiting adjustable resonance from 88.73 to 86.63 Hz. It is anticipated that this research will drive new innovations in adjustable metamaterials, including wider frequency ranges.

Transmissive Labyrinthine Acoustic Metamaterial-Based Holography for Extraordinary Energy Harvesting

Conventional energy sources are continuously depleting, and the world is actively seeking new green and efficient energy solutions. Enormous amounts of acoustic energy are dissipated daily, but the low intensity and limited efficiency of current harvesting techniques are preventing its adoption as a ubiquitous method of power generation. Herein, a strategic solution to increase acoustic energy harvesting efficiency using a specially designed metamaterial is implemented. A scalable transmissive labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial (LAM) is designed, developed, and employed to maximize ultrasound (40 kHz) capture over its large surface area (>27 k mm2), which is focused onto a piezoelectric film (78.6 mm2), thus magnifying incident sound pressure by 13.6 times. Three different piezoelectric films - two commercial and one lab-made nanocomposite film are tested with LAM in the acoustic energy harvesting system. An extraordinary voltage gain of 157-173% and a maximum power gain of 272% using the LAM compared to the case without the LAM are achieved. Multipoint focusing using holographic techniques, showcasing acoustic patterning to allow on-demand simultaneous harvesting in separate locations, is demonstrated. Our versatile approach for high-intensity acoustic energy harvesting opens future opportunities to exploit sound energy as a resource to contribute toward global sustainability.

Additive Manufacturing in Atomic Layer Processing Mode

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) has not been applicable to micro- and nanoscale engineering due to the limited resolution. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a technique for coating large areas with atomic thickness resolution based on tailored surface chemical reactions. Thus, combining the principles of additive manufacturing with ALD could open up a completely new field of manufacturing. Indeed, it is shown that a spatially localized delivery of ALD precursors can generate materials patterns. In this "atomic-layer additive manufacturing" (ALAM), the vertical resolution of the solid structure deposited is about 0.1 nm, whereas the lateral resolution is defined by the microfluidic gas delivery. The ALAM principle is demonstrated by generating lines and patterns of pure, crystalline TiO₂ and Pt on planar substrates and conformal coatings of 3D nanostructures. The functional quality of ALAM patterns is exemplified with temperature sensors, which achieve a performance similar to the industry standard. This general method of multimaterial direct patterning is much simpler than standard multistep lithographic microfabrication. It offers process flexibility, saves processing time, investment, materials, waste, and energy. It is envisioned that together with etching, doping, and cleaning performed in a similar local manner, ALAM will create the "atomic-layer advanced manufacturing" family of techniques.

Extreme anisotropy and dispersion engineering in locally resonant acoustic metamaterials

In the last few years, highly anisotropic metamaterials have been explored in various geometries, showcasing interesting routes to achieve better control of sound propagation. As an extreme example, hyperbolic metasurfaces have been shown to offer broadband enhanced sound-matter interactions and diffraction-less propagation of acoustic waves, providing opportunities for sub-diffraction imaging and enhanced sound emission. In this study, we show that structure design of a locally resonant metamaterial enables extreme anisotropic responses, ranging from elliptic to hyperbolic propagation of acoustic surface waves, offering interesting opportunities for extreme sound guiding and steering at the subwavelength scale well compatible with a wide range of additive manufacturing techniques.
