Behind the Non-Uniform Breakup of Bubble Slug in Y-Shaped Microchannel: Dynamics and Mechanisms

Bubble flow in confined geometries is a problem of fundamental and technological significance. Among all the forms, bubble breakup in bifurcated microchannels is one of the most commonly encountered scenarios, where an in-depth understanding is necessary for better leveraging the process. This study numerically investigates the non-uniform breakup of a bubble slug in Y-shaped microchannels under different flow ratios, Reynolds numbers, and initial bubble volumes. Overall, the bubble can either breakup or non-breakup when passing through the bifurcation and shows different forms depending on flow regimes. The flow ratio-Reynolds number phase diagrams indicate a power-law transition line of breakup and non-breakup. The bubble takes longer to break up with rising flow ratios yet breaks earlier with higher Reynolds numbers and volumes. Non-breakup takes less time than the breakup patterns. Flow ratio is the origin of non-uniform breakup. Both the Reynolds number and initial volume influence the bubble states when reaching the bifurcation and thus affect subsequent processes. Bubble neck dynamics are analyzed to describe the breakup further. The volume distribution after breaking up is found to have a quadratic relation with the flow ratio. Our study is hoped to provide insights for practical applications related to non-uniform bubble breakups.

The motion of long bubbles in microchannels using a meter-long, rectangular capillary on a chip

HYPOTHESIS

The dynamics of gas-liquid interfaces differs between aqueous surfactant and nanoparticle mixtures in rectangular cross-section capillaries.

EXPERIMENTS

We designed and fabricated a new microfluidic device with a meter-long channel and a noncircular cross section (35 μm by 100 μm by 1 m) to study the flow behavior of long bubbles in capillaries wetted by water as well as surfactant and nanoparticle solutions. Flow in the novel symmetric loop device maintains essentially straight and inertialess conditions over a wide range of flow rates.

FINDINGS

The pressure-drop versus velocity relationship of long bubbles in capillaries with noncircular cross sections has been studied theoretically but not extensively validated. The measured pressure drop (normalized with respect to interfacial properties) experienced by bubbles varies as Ca^2/3 over the range 10^-7<Ca<10^-4 where Ca=μUσ. Thus, the drag also scales as Ca^2/3. The measurements from our new device thereby confirm previous theoretical relationships of the flow of long gas bubbles wetted by surfactant solutions in noncircular capillaries. Contrary to the hypothesis, the Ca^2/3 drag-velocity relationship applies to gas bubbles in deionized water, nanoparticles in brine, surfactant in brine, and nanoparticle-surfactant mixtures in brine for the conditions studied.

Numerical Investigation on the Symmetric Breakup of Bubble within a Heated Microfluidic Y-Junction

This study numerically investigated the symmetric breakup of bubble within a heated microfluidic Y-junction. The established three-dimensional model was verified with the results in the literature. Two crucial variables, Reynolds number (Re) and heat flux (q), were considered. Numerical results demonstrated that the bubble breakup was significantly affected by phase change under the heated environment. The “breakup with tunnel” and “breakup with obstruction” modes respectively occurred at the low and high q. The breakup rate in pinch-off stage was much larger than that in squeezing stage. As Re increased, the bubble broke more rapidly, and the critical neck thickness tended to decrease. The bubble annihilated the vortices existing in the divergence region and made the fluid flow more uniform. The heat transfer was enhanced more drastically as Re was decreased or q was increased, where the maximum Nusselt number under two-phase case was 6.53 times larger than single-phase case. The present study not only helps understanding of the physical mechanisms of bubble behaviors and heat transfer within microfluidic Y-junction, but also informs design of microfluidic devices.

Controlled generation of droplets using an electric field in a flow-focusing paper-based device

Droplet-based microfluidics is a modular platform in high-throughput single-cell and small sample analyses. However, this droplet microfluidic system was widely fabricated using soft lithography or glass capillaries, which is expensive and technically demanding for various applications, limiting use in resource-poor settings. Besides, the variation in droplet size is also restricted due to the limitations on the operating forces that the paper-based platform is able to withstand. Herein, we develop a fully integrated paper-based droplet microfluidic platform for conducting droplet generation and cell encapsulation in independent aqueous droplets dispersed in a carrier oil by incorporating electric fields. Through imposing an electric field, the droplet size would decrease with increasing the electric field and smaller droplets can be produced at high applied voltage. The droplet diameter can be adjusted by the ratio of inner and outer flow velocities as well as the applied electric field. We also demonstrated the proof of concept encapsulation application of our paper device by encapsulating yeast cells under an electric field. Using a simple wax printing method, carbon electrodes can be integrated on the paper. The integrated paper-based microfluidic platform can be fabricated easily and conducted outside of centralized laboratories. This microfluidic system shows great potential in drug and cell investigations by encapsulating cells in resource-limited environments.

Water Droplets Translocation and Fission in a 3D Bi-Planar Multifurcated T-Junction Microchannels

Droplet fission has gained notable interest in drug delivery applications due to its ability to perform parallel operations in single device. Hitherto, droplet flow behavior in a 3D constriction was scarcely investigated. This study aims to investigate droplets fission inside a 3D bi-planar multifurcated microfluidic device. The flow behavior and droplet size distribution were studied in trifurcated microchannels using distilled water as dispersed phase (1 mPa·s) and olive oil (68 mPa·s) as continuous phase. Various sizes of subordinate daughter droplets were manipulated passively through the modulation of flowrate ratio (Q) (0.15 < Q < 3.33). Overall, we found droplet size coefficient of variations (CV%) ranging from 0.72% to 69%. Highly monodispersed droplets were formed at the upstream T-junction (CV% < 2%) while the droplet fission process was unstable at higher flowrate ratio (Q > 0.4) as they travel downstream (1.5% < CV% < 69%) to splitting junctions. Complex responses to the non-monotonic behavior of mean droplet size was found at the downstream boundaries, which arose from the deformations under nonuniform flow condition. CFD was used as a tool to study the preliminary maximum velocity (Umax) profile for the symmetrical (0.01334 m/s < Umax < 0.0153 m/s) and asymmetrical branched channels (0.0223 m/s< Umax < 0.00438 m/s), thus complementing the experimental model studies.

Multiple splitting of droplets using multi-furcating microfluidic channels

Removing volumes from droplets is a challenging but critical step in many droplet-based applications. Geometry-mediated droplet splitting has the potential to reliably divide droplets and thus facilitate the implementation of this step. In this paper, we report the design of multi-furcating microfluidic channels for efficient droplet splitting. We studied the splitting regimes as the size of the mother droplets varied and investigated the dependence of the transition between splitting regimes on the capillary number and the dimensionless droplet length. We found that the results obtained with our device agreed with the reported dimensionless analysis law in T-junctions. We further investigated the effect of channel lengths on the volume allocation in branch channels and achieved droplet splitting with various splitting ratios. This study proposed an efficient on-demand droplet splitting method and the findings could potentially be applied in washing steps in droplet-based biological assays or assays that require aliquot.
