Electroosmotic Flow in Microchannel with Black Silicon Nanostructures

Rapid microfluidics prototyping through variotherm desktop injection molding for multiplex diagnostics

In this work, we demonstrate an inexpensive method of prototyping microfluidics using a desktop injection molding machine. A centrifugal microfluidic device with a novel central filling mechanism was developed to demonstrate the technique. We overcame the limitations of desktop machines in replicating microfluidic features by variotherm heating and cooling the mold between 50 °C and 110 °C within two minutes. Variotherm heating enabled good replication of microfeatures, with a coefficient of variation averaging only 3.6% attained for the measured widths of 100 μm wide molded channels. Using this methodology, we produced functional polystyrene centrifugal microfluidic chips, capable of aliquoting fluids into 5.0 μL reaction chambers with 97.5% accuracy. We performed allele-specific loop-mediated isothermal amplification (AS-LAMP) reactions for genotyping CYP2C19 alleles on these chips. Readouts were generated using optical pH sensors integrated onto chips, by drop-casting sensor precursor solutions into reaction chambers before final chip assembly. Positive reactions could be discerned by decreases in pH sensor fluorescence, thresholded against negative control reactions lacking the primers for nucleic acid amplification and with time-to-results averaging 38 minutes. Variotherm desktop injection molding can enable researchers to prototype microfluidic devices more cost-effectively, in an iterative fashion, due to reduced costs of smaller, in-house molds. Designs prototyped this way can be directly translated to mass production, enhancing their commercialization potential and positive impacts.

Electroosmotic flow in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D-printed microchannels

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) was determined in tridimensional (3D)-printed microchannels with dimensions smaller than 100 µm. Fused deposition modeling 3D printing using thermoplastic filaments of PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), PLA (polylactic acid), and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) were used to fabricate the microchannels. The current monitoring method and sodium phosphate solutions at different pH values (3-10) were used for the EOF mobility (µ_EOF ) measurements, which ranged from 2.00 × 10^-4 to 12.52 × 10^-4  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 . The highest and the smallest µ_EOF were obtained for the PLA and PETG microchannels, respectively. Adding the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to the sodium phosphate solution caused EOF direction reversion in all the studied microchannels. The obtained results can be interesting for developing 3D-printed microfluidic devices, in which EOF is relevant.

Heat and Mass Transfer Impact on Differential Type Nanofluid with Carbon Nanotubes: A Study of Fractional Order System

This paper is an analysis of flow of MHD CNTs of second grade nano-fluid under the influence of first order chemical reaction, suction, thermal generation and magnetic field. The fluid is flowing through a porous medium. For the study of heat and mass transfer, we applied the newly introduced differential operators to model such flow. The equations for heat, mass and momentum are established in the terms of Caputo (C), Caputo–Fabrizio (CF) and Atangana–Baleanu in Caputo sense (ABC) fractional derivatives. This shows the novelty of this work. The solutions are evaluated by employing Laplace transform and inversion algorithm. The flow in momentum profile due to variability in the values of parameters are graphically illustrated among C, CF and ABC models. It is concluded that fluid velocity showed decreasing behavior for χ, P, ℏ2, Mo, Pr, ℵ and Sc while it showed increasing behavior for Gr, Gm, κ and Ao. Moreover, ABC fractional operator presents larger memory effect than C and CF fractional operators.

Fused filament fabrication 3D printed polylactic acid electroosmotic pumps

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) offers a flexible approach for the production of bespoke microfluidic structures such as the electroosmotic pump. Here a readily accessible fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing technique has been employed for the first time to produce microcapillary structures using low cost thermoplastics in a scalable electroosmotic pump application. Capillary structures were formed using a negative space 3D printing approach to deposit longitudinal filament arrangements with polylactic acid (PLA) in either "face-centre cubic" or "body-centre cubic" arrangements, where the voids deliberately formed within the deposited structure act as functional micro-capillaries. These 3D printed capillary structures were shown to be capable of functioning as a simple electroosmotic pump (EOP), where the maximum flow rate of a single capillary EOP was up to 1.0 μl min^-1 at electric fields of up to 750 V cm^-1. Importantly, higher flow rates were readily achieved by printing parallel multiplexed capillary arrays.

Electroosmotic Flow Hysteresis for Fluids with Dissimilar pH and Ionic Species

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) involving displacement of multiple fluids is employed in micro-/nanofluidic applications. There are existing investigations on EOF hysteresis, i.e., flow direction-dependent behavior. However, none so far have studied the solution pair system of dissimilar ionic species with substantial pH difference. They exhibit complicated hysteretic phenomena. In this study, we investigate the EOF of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃, alkaline) and sodium chloride (NaCl, slightly acidic) solution pair via current monitoring technique. A developed slip velocity model with a modified wall condition is implemented with finite element simulations. Quantitative agreements between experimental and simulation results are obtained. Concentration evolutions of NaHCO₃-NaCl follow the dissimilar anion species system. When NaCl displaces NaHCO₃, EOF reduces due to the displacement of NaHCO₃ with high pH (high absolute zeta potential). Consequently, NaCl is not fully displaced into the microchannel. When NaHCO₃ displaces NaCl, NaHCO₃ cannot displace into the microchannel as NaCl with low pH (low absolute zeta potential) produces slow EOF. These behaviors are independent of the applied electric field. However, complete displacement tends to be achieved by lowering the NaCl concentration, i.e., increasing its zeta potential. In contrast, the NaHCO₃ concentration has little impact on the displacement process. These findings enhance the understanding of EOF involving solutions with dissimilar pH and ion species.

Numerical Approximation of Microorganisms Hybrid Nanofluid Flow Induced by a Wavy Fluctuating Spinning Disc

The analysis explored a numerical simulation of microorganisms, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and ferric oxide water-based hybrid nanofluid flow induced by a wavy fluctuating spinning disc with energy propagation. In the presence of CNTs and magnetic nanoparticulates, the nanofluid is synthesized. The exceptional tensile strength, flexibility, and electrical and thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes and iron nanoparticles have been extensively reported. The motive of the proposed analysis is to optimize thermal energy conveyance efficiency for a spectrum of industrial and biomedical applications. The phenomena have been expressed as a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) which contain the momentum, energy, concentration, and motile microorganism equations. The modeled equations have been diminished to the dimensionless system of nonlinear ODEs through a similarity framework. The Matlab built-in package boundary value solver has been utilized to solve the obtained system of ODEs. The findings are compared to the PCM technique for validity purposes. The results are illustrated graphically and discussed. The layout of a rotating disc has a positive effect on energy transition and velocity profile. The irregular rotating surface increases energy progression up to 15% relative to a smooth surface. The accumulation of nanocomposites (CNTs and magnetic nanoparticles) significantly enhanced the thermal capabilities of the liquid medium. When operating with a low distribution, it is more impactful.

Recent Progress of Black Silicon: From Fabrications to Applications

Since black silicon was discovered by coincidence, the special material was explored for many amazing material characteristics in optical, surface topography, and so on. Because of the material property, black silicon is applied in many spheres of a photodetector, photovoltaic cell, photo-electrocatalysis, antibacterial surfaces, and sensors. With the development of fabrication technology, black silicon has expanded in more and more applications and has become a research hotspot. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the fabricating method of black silicon, including nanosecond or femtosecond laser irradiation, metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE), reactive ion etching (RIE), wet chemical etching, electrochemical method, and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) methods. In addition, this review focuses on the progress in multiple black silicon applications in the past 10 years. Finally, the prospect of black silicon fabricating and various applications are outlined.

Numerical Investigation of Nanostructure Orientation on Electroosmotic Flow

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) is fluid flow induced by an applied electric field, which has been widely employed in various micro-/nanofluidic applications. Past investigations have revealed that the presence of nanostructures in microchannel reduces EOF. Hitherto, the angle-dependent behavior of nanoline structures on EOF has not yet been studied in detail and its understanding is lacking. Numerical analyses of the effect of nanoline orientation angle θ on EOF to reveal the associated mechanisms were conducted in this investigation. When θ increases from 5° to 90° (from parallel to perpendicular to the flow direction), the average EOF velocity decreases exponentially due to the increase in distortion of the applied electric field distribution at the structured surface, as a result of the increased apparent nanolines per unit microchannel length. With increasing nanoline width W, the decrease of average EOF velocity is fairly linear, attributed to the simultaneous narrowing of nanoline ridge (high local fluid velocity region). While increasing nanoline depth D results in a monotonic decrease of the average EOF velocity. This reduction stabilizes for aspect ratio D/W > 0.5 as the electric field distribution distortion within the nanoline trench remains nearly constant. This investigation reveals that the effects on EOF of nanolines, and by extrapolation for any nanostructures, may be directly attributed to their effects on the distortion of the applied electric field distribution within a microchannel.

Anti-Reflectance Optimization of Secondary Nanostructured Black Silicon Grown on Micro-Structured Arrays

Owing to its extremely low light absorption, black silicon has been widely investigated and reported in recent years, and simultaneously applied to various disciplines. Black silicon is, in general, fabricated on flat surfaces based on the silicon substrate. However, with three normal fabrication methods-plasma dry etching, metal-assisted wet etching, and femtosecond laser pulse etching-black silicon cannot perform easily due to its lowest absorption and thus some studies remained in the laboratory stage. This paper puts forward a novel secondary nanostructured black silicon, which uses the dry-wet hybrid fabrication method to achieve secondary nanostructures. In consideration of the influence of the structure's size, this paper fabricated different sizes of secondary nanostructured black silicon and compared their absorptions with each other. A total of 0.5% reflectance and 98% absorption efficiency of the pit sample were achieved with a diameter of 117.1 μm and a depth of 72.6 μm. In addition, the variation tendency of the absorption efficiency is not solely monotone increasing or monotone decreasing, but firstly increasing and then decreasing. By using a statistical image processing method, nanostructures with diameters between 20 and 30 nm are the majority and nanostructures with a diameter between 10 and 40 nm account for 81% of the diameters.
