Abstract
Nowadays, the physical nature of supersaturated binary aqueous sugar solutions in the vicinity of the glass transition represents a very important issue due to their biological applications in cryopreservation of cells and tissues, food science and stabilization and storage of nano genetic drugs. We present the construction of the Supplemented Phase Diagram and the non-equilibrium nature of the undersaturated-supersaturated kinetic transition. The description of its thermodynamic nature is achieved through the study of behavior of their viscosity as temperature is lowered and concentration increased. In this work, we find a universal character for the viscosities of several sugar water solutions.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Experiments that examine the impacts of subnatural background radiation exposure provide a unique approach to studying the biological effects of low-dose radiation. These experiments often need to be conducted in deep underground laboratories in order to filter surface-level cosmic radiation. This presents some logistical challenges in experimental design and necessitates a model organism with minimal maintenance. As such, desiccated yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) is an ideal model system for these investigations. This study aimed to determine the impact of prolonged sub-background radiation exposure in anhydrobiotic (desiccated) yeast at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Two yeast strains were used: a normal wild type and an isogenic recombinational repair-deficient rad51 knockout strain ( rad51 Δ). Desiccated yeast samples were stored in the normal background surface control laboratory (68.0 nGy h -1 ) and in the sub-background environment within SNOLAB (10.1 nGy h -1 ) for up to 48 wk. Post-rehydration survival, growth rate, and metabolic activity were assessed at multiple time points. Survival in the sub-background environment was significantly reduced by a factor of 1.39 and 2.67 in the wild type and rad51 ∆ strains, respectively. Post-rehydration metabolic activity measured via alamarBlue reduction remained unchanged in the wild type strain but was 26% lower in the sub-background rad51 ∆ strain. These results demonstrate that removing natural background radiation negatively impacts the survival and metabolism of desiccated yeast, highlighting the potential importance of natural radiation exposure in maintaining homeostasis of living organisms.

Abstract
Faced with desiccation stress, many organisms deploy strategies to maintain the integrity of their cellular components. Amorphous glassy media composed of small molecular solutes or protein gels present general strategies for protecting against drying. We review these strategies and the proposed molecular mechanisms to explain protein protection in a vitreous matrix under conditions of low hydration. We also describe efforts to exploit similar strategies in technological applications for protecting proteins in dry or highly desiccated states. Finally, we outline open questions and possibilities for future explorations.

Abstract
In natural environments, bacteria often enter a state of anhydrobiosis due to water loss. Multiple studies have demonstrated that desiccation may lead to protein aggregation and glycation both in vivo and in vitro. However, the exact effects of water-loss-induced proteotoxic stress and the interplay between protein glycation and aggregation in bacteria remain elusive. Our studies revealed that protein aggregates formation in Escherichia coli started during desiccation and continued during the rehydration stage. The aggregates were enriched in proteins prone to liquid-liquid phase separation. Although it is known that glycation may induce protein aggregation in vitro, the aggregates formed in E. coli contained low levels of glycation products compared to the soluble protein fraction. Carnosine, glycine betaine and trehalose diminished the formation of protein aggregates and glycation products, resulting in increased E. coli viability. Notably, although high concentrations of glycine-betaine and trehalose significantly enhanced protein aggregation, glycation was still inhibited and E. coli cells survived desiccation better than bacteria grown without osmolytes. Taken together, our results suggest that the aggregates might play protective functions during early desiccation-rehydration stress. Moreover, it seems glycation rather than protein aggregation is the main cause of E. coli death upon desiccation-rehydration stress.

Abstract
Understanding the impact of sessile communities on underlying materials is of paramount importance in stone conservation. Up until now, the critical role of subaerial biofilms (SABs) whether they are protective or deteriorative remains unclear, especially under desiccation. The interest in desiccated SABs is raised by the prediction of an increase in drought events in the next decades that will affect the Mediterranean regions' rich stone heritage as never before. Thus, the main goal of this research is to study the effects of desiccation on both the biofilms' eco-physiology and its impacts on the lithic substrate. To this end, we used a dual-species model system composed of a phototroph and a chemotroph to simulate biofilm behavior on stone heritage. We found that drought altered the phototroph-chemotroph balance and enriched the biofilm matrix with proteins and DNA. Desiccated SABs underwent a shift in metabolism to fermentation and a decrease in oxidative stress. Additionally, desiccated SABs changed the water-related dynamics (adsorption, evaporation, and wetting properties) in limestone. Water absorption experiments showed that desiccated SABs protected the stone from rapid water uptake, while a thermographic survey indicated a delay in water evaporation. Spilling-drop tests revealed a change in the wettability of the stone-SAB interface, which affected the water transport properties of the stone. Finally, desiccated SABs reduced stone swelling in the presence of water vapor. The biodeteriorative and bioprotective implications of desiccated SABs on the stone were ultimately assessed.
