Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila, a member of the Verrucomicrobiota phylum, is recognized as a key gut microbe and has emerged as a potential next-generation probiotic. Assessment of antibiotic resistance in probiotics is a prerequisite for their application, while very few is studied in Akkermansia species. To address this, eight representative class A β-lactamases (36.90 %-41.30 % identity with known β-lactamases) from the Akkermansia species were screened and found to increase the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Escherichia coli to β-lactams (2-1024 fold). Secondly, four β-lactamases were successfully purified and identified as extended-spectrum β-lactamase because they exhibited hydrolase activity against β-lactams from penicillin, cephalosporins, and monobactam classes. Based on predicted three-dimensional structure, we hypothesized and validated that serine at 51 position was catalytic amino acid. Thirdly, the genomic context analysis revealed the absence of mobile genetic elements or other antibiotic resistance genes surrounding β-lactamase genes, suggesting they may not be transferable. This study provides a foundational basis for the safety evaluation of Akkermansia species as probiotics.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) possesses health-promoting properties. Nevertheless, A. muciniphila enrichment remains a challenging endeavor. Quercetin-3-O-rutinose-7-O-α-l-rhamnoside (QRR), a flavonoid found in lychee pulp, has a unique double-substituted glycosylated structure, requiring a specific intestinal microbiota for effective metabolism. Here, QRR was fermented using a coculture of Bacteroides uniformis and A. muciniphila, and the interactions between the two were elucidated in terms of QRR regulation of microbial growth changes and metabolic properties. The results demonstrated that QRR effectively promoted the proliferation of A. muciniphila based on the metabolic action of B. uniformis in vitro, which was evidenced by a notable increase in the number of viable bacteria. Furthermore, the coculture sample exhibited a significant increase in SCFAs. Qualitative analysis of metabolites by UPLC-ESI-Triple-TOF-MS/MS showed that B. uniformis could release sugars on QRR to produce quercetin-3-O-glucoside-7-O-α-rhamnoside and further quercetin. In the coculture and B. uniformis culture, quercetin was converted to taxifolin, which was identified as a crucial intermediate in the metabolism of QRR. Notably, the metabolite kaempferol was only detected in the coculture. The present study reveals the interaction between QRR and the coculture of A. muciniphila and B. uniformis, providing a practical basis for the potential prebiotic value of QRR.

Abstract
According to the FAO/WHO guidelines, selection of probiotics requires the assessment of survival under gastrointestinal stress and adhesion to human epithelial cells. These attributes were evaluated on Akkermansia muciniphila ATCC BAA-835 simulating the gastrointestinal transit (GIT) immediately followed by adhesion to human intestinal cell lines (CaCo2, HT-29, and HT-29-MTX) as an alternative approach to in vitro methods performed with fresh cells in each trial. The survival rate after GIT, as determined by plate counts and fluorescent probes, was significantly higher for A. muciniphila (about 8 Log CFU/mL) than for the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG ATCC 53103 (about 3 Log CFU/mL). The use of Live/Dead assay highlighted that A. muciniphila forms cell aggregates in the gastric phase as protective mechanism, explaining its high viability in the intestine. The rate of adhesion to human cell lines was always lower for strains tested after simulated GIT than for strains that did not undergo simulated GIT. Akkermansia muciniphila exhibited significantly higher adhesion than Lbs. rhamnosus GG, particularly to the mucus-secreting HT-29-MTX cells across a range of concentrations (2-8 Log CFU/mL). Finally, the bioinformatic analysis of A. muciniphila proteome confirmed the Amuc_1434 as a potential factor in binding to the human MUC2 protein.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) has gained recognition as a pioneering probiotic, exhibiting considerable potential to enhance immune conditions across both humans and animals. The health benefits of A. muciniphila are attributed to its various components, including outer membrane proteins (PilQ and Amuc_1100), secreted proteins (P9 and AmTARS), extracellular vesicles, and metabolites such as SCFAs, ornithine lipids, γ-aminobutyric acid, cobalamin, and inosine. The dynamic control of the mucus layer by A. muciniphila plays a crucial role in regulating intestinal mucosal immunity. Furthermore, A. muciniphila modulates immune function by interacting with macrophages, dendritic cells, T lymphocytes, and Paneth cells. Increasing the abundance of A. muciniphila in the gut through nutritional strategies represents a safe and effective means to augment immune function. Various polyphenols, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides have been shown to elevate the levels of this bacterium, thereby contributing to favorable immunoregulatory outcomes. This paper delves into the latest research advancements related to the probiotic mechanisms of A. muciniphila and provides an overview of the current understanding of how its abundance responds to nutrients. These insights offer a theoretical foundation for the utilization of A. muciniphila in immunoregulation.

Abstract
Due to its physiological benefits from in vitro and in vivo points of view, Akkermansia muciniphila, a common colonizer in the human gut mucous layer, has consistently been identified as an option for the next-generation probiotic. A. muciniphila is a significant bacterium that promotes host physiology. However, it also has a great deal of potential to become a probiotic due to its physiological advantages in a variety of therapeutic circumstances. Therefore, it can be established that the abundance of A. muciniphila in the gut environment, which is controlled by many genetic and dietary variables, is related to the biological behaviors of the intestinal microbiota and gut dysbiosis/eubiosis circumstances. Before A. muciniphila is widely utilized as a next-generation probiotic, regulatory obstacles, the necessity for significant clinical trials, and the sustainability of manufacturing must be eliminated. In this review, the outcomes of recent experimental and clinical reports are comprehensively reviewed, and common colonization patterns, main factors involved in the colonization of A. muciniphila in the gut milieu, their functional mechanisms in establishing homeostasis in the metabolic and energy pathways, the promising delivery role of microencapsulation, potential genetic engineering strategies, and eventually safety issues of A. muciniphila have been discussed.

Abstract
Gut microbiota dysfunction is a key factor affecting chronic kidney disease (CKD) susceptibility. Puerariae lobatae Radix (PLR), a traditional Chinese medicine and food homologous herb, is known to promote the gut microbiota homeostasis; however, its role in renoprotection remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy and potential mechanism of PLR to alleviate CKD. An 8‑week 2% NaCl‑feeding murine model was applied to induce CKD and evaluate the therapeutic effect of PLR supplementary. After gavage for 8 weeks, The medium and high doses of PLR significantly alleviated CKD‑associated creatinine, urine protein increasement and nephritic histopathological injury. Moreover, PLR protected kidney from fibrosis by reducing inflammatory response and downregulating the canonical Wnt/β‑catenin pathway. Furthermore, PLR rescued the gut microbiota dysbiosis and protected against high salt‑induced gut barrier dysfunction. Enrichment of Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium was found after PLR intervention, the relative abundances of which were in positive correlation with normal maintenance of renal histology and function. Next, fecal microbiota transplantation experiment verified that the positive effect of PLR on CKD was, at least partially, exerted through gut microbiota reestablishment and downregulation of the Wnt/β‑catenin pathway. The present study provided evidence for a new function of PLR on kidney protection and put forward a potential therapeutic strategy target for CKD.

Abstract
In this study, the genome of Akkermansia muciniphila ONE (designated AKK ONE) was sequenced, assembled, and analyzed. In addition, the safety of this strain was further evaluated by toxicological studies. The results showed that the AKK ONE genome is contained on a single chromosome with a total length of 2,817,524 bp and an average GC content of 55.48%. In total, 2411, 1131, 1168, 1745, and 1402 genes were annotated to the NR, GO, KEGG, COG, and SwissProt database, respectively. Potential resistance genes, adeF, tetW, ANT(3″)-IIa, and aadA1 were detected. AKK ONE was sensitive to ampicillin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, meropenem, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol and resistant to moxifloxacin. No potential virulence-related genes were detected. The PathogenFinder database analysis showed that AKK ONE was a non-potential human pathogen. This strain had good gastroenteric fluid tolerance and a weak ability to colonize the gut. No test item-related adverse effects were observed in the acute and subchronic toxicity test. AKK ONE did not display mutagenic activity either. This strain did not change the hematological and clinical biochemical parameters of mice. The weights of the organs were not affected by AKK ONE treatment. These results support that AKK ONE is safe for use as a probiotic at a dose of 8.28 × 109 CFU/kg bw/day.

Abstract
This study evaluates the suitability of three lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains-Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Apilactobacillus kunkeei-for use as probiotics in apiculture. Given the decline in bee populations due to pathogens and environmental stressors, sustainable alternatives to conventional treatments are necessary. This study aimed to assess the potential of these LAB strains in a probiotic formulation for bees through various in vitro tests, including co-culture interactions, biofilm formation, auto-aggregation, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, antibiotic susceptibility, and resistance to high osmotic concentrations. This study aimed to assess both the individual effects of the strains and their combined effects, referred to as the LAB mix. Results indicated no mutual antagonistic activity among the LAB strains, demonstrating their compatibility with multi-strain probiotic formulations. The LAB strains showed significant survival rates under high osmotic stress and simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The LAB mix displayed enhanced biofilm formation, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial efficacy against different bacterial strains. These findings suggest that a probiotic formulation containing these LAB strains could be used for a probiotic formulation, offering a promising approach to mitigating the negative effects of pathogens. Future research should focus on in vivo studies to validate the efficacy of these probiotic bacteria in improving bee health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The forest musk deer, a rare fauna species found in China, is famous for its musk secretion which is used in selected Traditional Chinese medicines. However, over-hunting has led to musk deer becoming an endangered species, and their survival is also greatly challenged by various high incidence and high mortality respiratory and intestinal diseases such as septic pneumonia and enteritis. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that Akkermannia muciniphila (AKK) is a promising probiotic, and we wondered whether AKK could be used as a food additive in animal breeding programmes to help prevent intestinal diseases. METHODS We isolated one AKK strain from musk deer feces (AKK-D) using an improved enrichment medium combined with real-time PCR. After confirmation by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, a series of in vitro tests was conducted to evaluate the probiotic effects of AKK-D by assessing its reproductive capability, simulated gastrointestinal fluid tolerance, acid and bile salt resistance, self-aggregation ability, hydrophobicity, antibiotic sensitivity, hemolysis, harmful metabolite production, biofilm formation ability, and bacterial adhesion to gastrointestinal mucosa. RESULTS The AKK-D strain has a probiotic function similar to that of the standard strain in humans (AKK-H). An in vivo study found that AKK-D significantly ameliorated symptoms in the enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC)-induced murine diarrhea model. AKK-D improved organ damage, inhibited inflammatory responses, and improved intestinal barrier permeability. Additionally, AKK-D promoted the reconstitution and maintenance of the homeostasis of gut microflora, as indicated by the fact that AKK-D-treated mice showed a decrease in Bacteroidetes and an increase in the proportion of other beneficial bacteria like Muribaculaceae, Muribaculum, and unclassified f_Lachnospiaceae compared with the diarrhea model mice. CONCLUSION Taken together, our data show that this novel AKK-D strain might be a potential probiotic for use in musk deer breeding, although further extensive systematic research is still needed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify and isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from indigenous sourdough and dairy samples in Iran, and to assess their probiotic properties in vitro. A total of 560 potential LAB isolates were examined, and 87 demonstrated high survival rates in artificial gastrointestinal fluids without hemolytic activity. The selected isolates exhibited significant auto-aggregation (18.35 to 79.42%) and co-aggregation abilities (20.16 to 71.26%). Additionally, the isolates displayed varying degrees of cell surface hydrophobicity (12.32 to 76.24%). Results indicated that 19 LAB isolates had cholesterol assimilation rates exceeding 30%. Moreover, forty strains tested negative for all twelve assessed pathogenic genes and exhibited good adhesion to human intestinal epithelial cells (13.47 to 49.12%). Furthermore, 24 isolates formed strong biofilms, 29 formed moderate biofilms, and 23 formed weak biofilms. Except for isolates ABRIIFBI-8, ABRIIFBI-16, ABRIIFBI-23, ABRIIFBI-43, ABRIIFBI-56, and ABRIIFBI-62, most isolates were capable of producing exopolysaccharides. Consequently, LAB strains naturally occurring in sourdough and traditional dairy samples were suggested as potential probiotic candidates for incorporation into functional foods.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila is a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the human gut, making up 3-5% of the human microbiome. A. muciniphila is a promising next-generation probiotic with clinical application prospects. Emerging studies have reported various beneficial effects of A. muciniphila including anti-cancer, delaying aging, reducing inflammation, improving immune function, regulating nervous system function, whereas knowledge on its roles and mechanism in infectious disease is currently unclear. In this review, we summarized the basic characteristics, genome and phenotype diversity, the influence of A. muciniphila and its derived components on infectious diseases, such as sepsis, virus infection, enteric infection, periodontitis and foodborne pathogen induced infections. We also provided updates on mechanisms how A. muciniphila protects intestinal barrier integrity and modulate host immune response. In summary, we believe that A. muciniphila is a promising therapeutic probiotic that may be applied for the treatment of a variety of infectious diseases.

Abstract
Probiotic microorganisms are incorporated in foods due to their numerous health benefits. We investigated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts isolated from goat milk in Nigeria for novel probiotic strains. In this study, a total of 27 LAB and 23 yeast strains were assessed for their probiotic potentials. Only six LAB strains (Weissella cibaria GM 93m3, Weissella confusa GM 92m1, Pediococcus acidilactici GM 18a, Pediococcus pentosaceus GM 23d, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus GM 102s4, Limosilactobacillus fermentum GM 30m1) and four yeast strains (Candida tropicalis 12a, C. tropicalis 33d, Diutina rugosa 53b, and D. rugosa 77a) identified using partial 16S and 26S rDNA sequencing, respectively, showed survival at pH 2.5, 0.3% bile salt, and simulated gastrointestinal conditions and possessed auto-aggregative and hydrophobic properties, thus satisfying key in vitro criteria as probiotics. All LAB strains showed coaggregation properties and antimicrobial activities against pathogens. Pediococcus pentosaceus GM 23d recorded the strongest coaggregation percentage (34-94%) against 14 pathogens, while W. cibaria GM 93m3 showed the least (6-57%) against eight of the 14 pathogens. The whole cell and extracellular extracts of LAB and yeast strains, with the exception of D. rugosa 77a, had either 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl and/or hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. In conclusion, all six LAB and four yeast strains are important probiotic candidates that can be further investigated for use as functional starter cultures.

Abstract
In addition to providing certain health advantages to the host, a bacterial strain must possess a clearly defined safety profile to be regarded as a probiotic. In this study, we present a thorough and methodical assessment of the safety of a novel strain of bacteria, Akkermansia muciniphila PROBIO, which was isolated from human feces. Firstly, we examined the strain's overall features, such as its gastrointestinal tolerance and its physiological and biochemical traits. Next, we verified its genotoxic properties through bacterial reverse mutation and in vitro mammalian cell micronucleus assays. The drug sensitivity of A. muciniphila PROBIO was subsequently examined through an analysis of its antibiotic resistance genes. Additionally, the toxicological impact was verified through acute and sub-chronic toxicity studies. A genome-based safety assessment was conducted to gain further insights into gene function, including potential virulence factors and pathogenic properties. Finally, we assessed whether moxifloxacin resistance in A. muciniphila PROBIO is transferred using in vitro conjugation experiments. A. muciniphila PROBIO exhibited superior gastrointestinal tolerance, with no observed hematological or histopathological abnormalities. Moreover, the outcomes pertaining to mutagenic, clastogenic, or toxic impacts were found to be negative, even at exceedingly high dosages. Moreover, no adverse effects associated with the test substance were observed during the examination of acute and sub-chronic toxicity. Consequently, it was plausible to estimate the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) to be 6.4 × 1011 viable bacteria for an average individual weighing 70 kg. Additionally, only three potential drug resistance genes and one virulence factor gene were annotated. A. muciniphila PROBIO is naturally resistant to moxifloxacin, and resistance does not transfer. Collectively, the data presented herein substantiate the presumed safety of A. muciniphila PROBIO for its application in food.

Abstract
SCOPE Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) are Gram negative commensal bacteria, degrading mucin in the intestinal mucosa, modulating intestinal permeability and inflammation in the digestive tract, liver, and blood. Some components can promote the relative abundance of A. muciniphila in the gut microbiota, but lower levels of A. muciniphila are more commonly found in people with obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndromes, or inflammatory digestive diseases. Over-intake of ethanol can also induce a decrease of A. muciniphila, associated with dysregulation of microbial metabolite production, impaired intestinal permeability, induction of chronic inflammation, and production of cytokines. METHODS AND RESULTS Using a PRISMA search strategy, a review is performed on the bacteriological characteristics of A. muciniphila, the factors capable of modulating its relative abundance in the digestive tract and its probiotic use in alcohol-related liver diseases (alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatic transplantation, partial hepatectomy). CONCLUSION Several studies have shown that supplementation with A. muciniphila can improve ethanol-related hepatic pathologies, and highlight the interest in using this bacterial species as a probiotic.

Abstract
Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides (DOPs) are important active polysaccharides found in Dendrobium officinale, which is commonly used as a conventional food or herbal medicine and is well known in China. DOPs can influence the composition of the gut microbiota and the degradation capacity of these symbiotic bacteria, which in turn may determine the efficacy of dietary interventions. However, the necessary analysis of the relationship between DOPs and the gut microbiota is lacking. In this review, we summarize the extraction, structure, health benefits, and related mechanisms of DOPs, construct the DOPs-host axis, and propose that DOPs are potential prebiotics, mainly composed of 1,4-β-D-mannose, 1,4-β-D-glucose, and O-acetate groups, which induce an increase in the abundance of gut microbiota such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia, Bacteroides, and Prevotella. In addition, we found that when exposed to DOPs with different structural properties, the gut microbiota may exhibit different diversity and composition and provide health benefits, such as metabolism regulations, inflammation modulation, immunity moderation, and cancer intervention. This may contribute to facilitating the development of functional foods and health products to improve human health.

Abstract
Using culture enrichment methods, 100 strains of bacilli of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from honeybee Apis mellifera intermissa and fresh honey, collected from apiaries located in the north-east of Algeria. Amongst all of the isolated LAB, 19 selected strains were closely affiliated to four species-Fructobacillus fructosus (10), Apilactobacillus kunkeei (5), Lactobacillus kimbladii and/or Lactobacillus kullabergensis (4)-using phylogenetic and phenotypic approaches. The in vitro probiotic characteristics (simulated gastrointestinal fluids tolerance, autoaggregation and hydrophobicity abilities, antimicrobial activity and cholesterol reduction) and safety properties (hemolytic activity, antibiotic resistance and absence of biogenic amines) were evaluated. The results indicated that some strains showed promising potential probiotic properties. In addition, neither hemolytic activity nor biogenic amines were produced. The carbohydrate fermentation test (API 50 CHL) revealed that the strains could efficiently use a broad range of carbohydrates; additionally, four strains belonging to Apilactobacillus kunkeei and Fructobacillus fructosus were found to be exopolysaccharides (EPS) producers. This study demonstrates the honeybee Apis mellifera intermissa and one of her products as a reservoir for novel LAB with potential probiotic features, suggesting suitability for promoting host health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND American foulbrood (AFB) disease caused by Paenibacillus larvae is dangerous, and threatens beekeeping. The eco-friendly treatment method using probiotics is expected to be the prospective method for controlling this pathogen in honey bees. Therefore, this study investigated the bacterial species that have antimicrobial activity against P. larvae. RESULTS Overall, 67 strains of the gut microbiome were isolated and identified in three phyla; the isolates had the following prevalence rates: Firmicutes 41/67 (61.19%), Actinobacteria 24/67 (35.82%), and Proteobacteria 2/67 (2.99%). Antimicrobial properties against P. larvae on agar plates were seen in 20 isolates of the genus Lactobacillus, Firmicutes phylum. Six representative strains from each species (L. apis HSY8_B25, L. panisapium PKH2_L3, L. melliventris HSY3_B5, L. kimbladii AHS3_B36, L. kullabergensis OMG2_B25, and L. mellis OMG2_B33) with the largest inhibition zones on agar plates were selected for in vitro larvae rearing challenges. The results showed that three isolates (L. apis HSY8_B25, L. panisapium PKH2_L3, and L. melliventris HSY3_B5) had the potential to be probiotic candidates with the properties of safety to larvae, inhibition against P. larvae in infected larvae, and high adhesion ability. CONCLUSIONS Overall, 20 strains of the genus Lactobacillus with antimicrobial properties against P. larvae were identified in this study. Three representative strains from different species (L. apis HSY8_B25, L. panisapium PKH2_L3, and L. melliventris HSY3_B5) were evaluated to be potential probiotic candidates and were selected for probiotic development for the prevention of AFB. Importantly, the species L. panisapium isolated from larvae was identified with antimicrobial activity for the first time in this study.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila is considered a next-generation probiotic because of its immense potential to regulate disorders. We isolated 31 strains of A. muciniphila from feces or breast milk of healthy people. After genome sequencing, assembly, and analysis, we selected six strains (AM01 to AM06) for further exploration. We first analyzed their general characteristics, including morphological description, growth characteristics, and physiological and biochemical characteristics, and then confirmed their genetic characteristics, including GC content, putative virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance genes. We next investigated the tolerance of these strains to artificial gastric and intestinal fluids and bile salts to evaluate their survival potential in the digestive tract. Drug sensitivity tests were also conducted based on the analysis of the antibiotic resistance genes of these strains. Furthermore, we examined the genetic stability and acute toxicity of two strains (AM02 and AM06) in mice. Finally, the safety of AM06 was evaluated in normal mice and nude mice. AM06 exhibited adaptability to pH changes. Since AM02 and AM03 showed more resistance to antibiotics than AM01 and AM04 to AM06, their potential clinical application may be limited. Both AM02 and AM06 were genetically and phenotypically stable and safe in normal mice, and AM06 was safe in nude mice. Considering all this together, AM06 is a safe A. muciniphila strain and exhibits a great potential for use as a probiotic strain among the isolated strains. IMPORTANCE In this study, we isolated 30 strains of Akkermansia muciniphila from different samples of human feces, and for the first time we isolated an A. muciniphila strain from human breast milk. This isolation verified the existence of microbes in human breast milk, which suggests that A. muciniphila can be vertically propagated from mother to infant and participates in the formation of the early gut microbiome. We then systematically evaluated the potential for use as a probiotic of this A. muciniphila strains according to the FAO/WHO recommendation. We confirmed that the AM06 strain isolated from breast milk has no virulence factors and is genetically stable and nonpathogenic for both normal mice and nude mice. Moreover, its tolerance to pH changes and bile salts indicates its desirable probiotic properties. Thus, we propose that the AM06 strain of A. muciniphila is safe for use as a probiotic candidate.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have recently become ideal candidates for developing food biopreservatives. Adhesion is critical for LAB to perform biocontrol functions in food processing and preservation. In this study, we innovatively proposed an effective adhesion evaluation model related to the surface properties of LAB to excavate a LAB strain with high adhesion on the surface of shrimp. Then, the biocontrol potential regarding the quality of refrigerated shrimp was explored, especially for protein quality. The screening of highly adherent LAB was performed using 54 LAB strains tolerant to the low temperature (4 °C) and present antimicrobial activity. Based on surface hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, and biofilm formation, a new method for predicting LAB adhesion was established by stepwise multiple linear regression. The most relevant relationship between adhesion and biofilm formation was derived from the model. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lac 9-3 stood out for the strongest adhesion on the shrimp surface and the highest antimicrobial activity. The preservation results showed that Lac 9-3 significantly (p < 0.05) retarded the accumulation of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and the growth of spoilage bacteria. The damage to the texture properties of shrimp was inhibited. Meanwhile, the degradation of myofibrillar protein was alleviated, including a significant delay (p < 0.05) in sulfhydryl (SH) group reduction, surface hydrophobicity increases, and protein conformation changes. This research optimized the evaluation of the bacteria adhesion potential, providing a new idea for developing biocontrol strategies to extend the commercial life of aquatic products.

Abstract
We isolated and characterized Limosilactobacillus reuteri PSC102 and evaluated its probiotic, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. We preliminarily isolated 154 candidates from pig feces and analyzed their Gram nature, morphology, and lactic acid production ability. Based on the results, we selected eight isolates and tested their ability to produce digestive enzymes. Finally, we identified one isolate using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, namely, L. reuteri PSC102. We tested its probiotic properties in vitro, including extracellular enzyme activities, low pH and bile salt tolerance, autoaggregation and coaggregation abilities, adhesion to Caco-2 cells, antibiotic susceptibility, and hemolytic and gelatinase activities. Antioxidant activity was determined using 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical scavenging and reducing power assays. The antibacterial activity of this strain and its culture supernatant against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli were evaluated using a time-kill assay and disk diffusion method, respectively. L. reuteri PSC102 exhibited tolerance toward low pH and bile salt and did not produce harmful enzymes or possess hemolytic and gelatinase activities. Its intact cells and cell-free extract exhibited potential antioxidant activities, and significantly inhibited the growth of enterotoxigenic E. coli. Our results demonstrate that L. reuteri PSC102 is a potential probiotic candidate for developing functional feed.

Abstract
The human gut acts as a habitat for diverse microbial communities, including mucin utilizers that play a significant role in host health and diseases. In this study, a gram-positive, rod-shaped mucin degrading bacterium was isolated from human faeces that belonged to the Priestia flexa species. Priestia isolate was analyzed for mucin-degrading ability and found that the KS1 strain could grow on mucin as the sole carbon source. The experimental results of the mucolytic zone around the colony and a 58% decrease in carbohydrate concentration confirmed the ability of Priestia to degrade mucin. The intracellular and extracellular glycosidase assay data supported the above results suggesting the ability of P. flexa to produce glycan hydrolysis enzymes that convert complex mucin oligosaccharide chains into simple glycans. The survival ability of the KS1 strain in simulated gastrointestinal conditions revealed that it could tolerate low pH (≥ 50% cell viability at pH 1.0) and 0.5% bile salt concentration (≥ 85% cell viability). The strain showed low hydrophobicity towards n-hexadecane (26.51 ± 0.92%) and xylene (21.71 ± 0.54%). Moreover, the KS1 culture was resistant to cefixime, clavulanic acid/ceftazidime, nafallin, methicillin, trimethoprim, kanamycin, and nalidixic antibiotic. Our results highlight the isolation of P. flexa KS1 strain that degrade mucin under in vitro conditions and show its better acclimatization within the GI environment. Further studies are required to unearth the molecular mechanisms involved in the degradation of mucin oligosaccharides in the human gut, advancing our understanding of health and disease.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila, a commensal bacterium commonly found in healthy gut microbiota, is widely considered a next-generation beneficial bacterium candidate to improve metabolic and inflammatory disorders. Recently the EFSA's Panel on Nutrition, Novel food, and Food Allergens has declared that pasteurized A. muciniphila DSM 22959T (also MucT, ATCC BAA-835) can be considered safe as a novel food, opening the door to its commercialization as a food supplement. Despite its recognized health benefits, there is still little information regarding the antimicrobial susceptibility of this species and reference cut-off values to distinguish strains with intrinsic or acquired resistance from susceptible strains. In this study, we combined a genomic approach with the evaluation of the antibiotic susceptibility in five human A. muciniphila isolates. Genomic mining for antimicrobial resistance genes and MICs determinations revealed that only one strain harboring tetW gene showed resistance to tetracycline, whereas all A. muciniphila strains showed low sensitivity to ciprofloxacin and aminoglycosides with no genotypic correlation. Although all strains harbor the gene adeF, encoding for a subunit of the resistance-nodulation-cell division efflux pump system, potentially involved in ciprofloxacin resistance, the susceptibility towards ciprofloxacin determined in presence of efflux pump inhibitors was not affected. Overall, our outcomes revealed the importance to extend the antibiotic susceptibility test to a larger number of new isolates of A. muciniphila to better assess the safety aspects of this species.

Abstract
As one of the promising next-generation probiotics (NGPs), Akkermansia muciniphila, a well-known mucin-degrading bacterium, has been proven to be closely related to the metabolic diseases of its human host. However, the role of A. muciniphila in the host’s intestinal health remains ambiguous. Here, we comprehensively summarize and discuss the characteristics, the distribution, and the colonization of A. muciniphila in the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT). We propose that the application of A. muciniphila as a biomarker for longevity, for diagnostics and prognostics of intestinal diseases, or for intestinal health should be cautiously considered. Precise dietary regulation can mediate the treatment of intestinal diseases by altering the abundance of A. muciniphila. Although the beneficial role of A. muciniphila and its component in intestinal inflammation has been discovered, in gnotobiotic mice with specific gut microbiota, certain genotype, and colorectal cancer, or in animal models infected with a specific pathogen, A. muciniphila may be related to the occurrence and development of intestinal diseases. Genomic analysis, emphasizing the strain-level phylogenetic differences of A. muciniphila, indicates that a clear description and discussion of each strain is critical before its practical application. Our review provides much needed insight for the precise application of A. muciniphila.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the potential and safety of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from faeces samples of Ganan yak as probiotic for prevention and/or treatment of yak diarrhea, four strains of LAB including Latilactobacillus curvatus (FY1), Weissella cibaria (FY2), Limosilactobacillus mucosae (FY3), and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus (FY4) were isolated and identified in this study. Cell surface characteristics (hydrophobicity and cell aggregation), acid resistance and bile tolerance, compatibility, antibacterial activity and in vitro cell adhesion tests were also carried out to evaluate the probiotic potential of LAB. The results showed that the four isolates had certain acid tolerance, bile salt tolerance, hydrophobicity and cell aggregation, all of which contribute to the survival and colonization of LAB in the gastrointestinal tract. There is no compatibility between the four strains, so they can be combined into a mixed probiotic formula. Antimicrobial tests showed that the four strains were antagonistic to Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium. Moreover, the in vitro safety of the four isolates were determined through hemolytic analysis, gelatinase activity, and antibacterial susceptibility experiments. The results suggest that all the four strains were considered as safe because they had no hemolytic activity, no gelatinase activity and were sensitive to most antibacterial agents. Moreover, the acute oral toxicity test of LAB had no adverse effect on body weight gain, food utilization and organ indices in Kunming mice. In conclusion, the four LAB isolated from yak feces have considerable potential to prevent and/or treat yak bacterial disease-related diarrhea.

Abstract
Roseburia intestinalis is an anaerobic bacterium that produces butyric acid and belongs to the phylum Firmicutes. There is increasing evidence that this bacterium has positive effects on several diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, alcoholic fatty liver, colorectal cancer, and metabolic syndrome, making it a potential “Next Generation Probiotic.” We investigated the genomic characteristics, probiotic properties, cytotoxicity, oral toxicity, colonization characteristics of the bacterium, and its effect on the gut microbiota. The genome contains few genes encoding virulence factors, three clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) sequences, two Cas genes, no toxic biogenic amine synthesis genes, and several essential amino acid and vitamin synthesis genes. Seven prophages and 41 genomic islands were predicted. In addition to a bacteriocin (Zoocin A), the bacterium encodes four metabolic gene clusters that synthesize short-chain fatty acids and 222 carbohydrate-active enzyme modules. This bacterium is sensitive to antibiotics specified by the European Food Safety Authority, does not exhibit hemolytic or gelatinase activity, and exhibits some acid resistance. R. intestinalis adheres to intestinal epithelial cells and inhibits the invasion of certain pathogens. In vitro experiments showed that the bacterium was not cytotoxic. R. intestinalis did not affect the diversity or abundance of the gut flora. Using the fluorescent labelling method, we discovered that R. intestinalis colonizes the cecum and mucus of the colon. An oral toxicity study did not reveal any obvious adverse effects. The lethal dose (LD)50 of R. intestinalis exceeded 1.9 × 109 colony forming units (CFU)/kg, whereas the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) derived from this study was 1.32 × 109 CFU/kg/day for 28 days. The current research shows that, R. intestinalis is a suitable next-generation probiotic considering its probiotic properties and safety.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila is a Gram-negative intestinal anaerobic bacterium recently proposed as a novel probiotic candidate to be incorporated in food and pharmaceutical forms. Despite its multiple health benefits, the data addressing its antimicrobial susceptibility profile remain scarce. However, the absence of acquired resistance in probiotic strains is a compulsory criterion for its approval in the qualified presumption of safety list. This study aimed at characterizing the A. muciniphila DSM 22959 strain’s antimicrobial susceptibility profile using phenotypic and in silico approaches. To establish the phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profile of this strain, minimum inhibitory concentrations of eight antimicrobials were determined using broth microdilution and E-test methods. Additionally, the A. muciniphila DSM 22959 genome was screened using available databases and bioinformatics tools to identify putative antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG), virulence factors (VF), genomic islands (GI), and mobile genetic elements (MGE). The same categorization was obtained for both phenotypic methods. Resistance phenotype was observed for gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin, which was supported by the genomic context. No evidence was found of horizontal acquisition or potential transferability of the identified ARG and VF. Thus, this study provides new insights regarding the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the probiotic candidate A. muciniphila DSM 22959.

Probiotic and Antifungal Attributes of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolates from Naturally Fermented Brazilian Table Olives. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Research with fermented olives as a source of wild Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strains with probiotic and biotechnological characteristics constitutes a promising field of work. The present study evaluated in vitro probiotic, antifungal, and antimycotoxigenic potential of LAB isolates from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives. Among fourteen LAB isolates, the Levilactobacillus brevis CCMA 1762, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus CCMA 1768, and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei CCMA 1770 showed potential probiotic and antifungal properties. The isolates showed resistance to pH 2.0 (survival ≥ 84.55), bile salts (survival ≥ 99.44), and gastrointestinal tract conditions (survival ≥ 57.84%); hydrophobic cell surface (≥27%); auto-aggregation (≥81.38%); coaggregation with Escherichia coli INCQS 00181 (≥33.97%) and Salmonella Enteritidis ATCC 564 (≥53.84%); adhesion to the epithelial cell line Caco-2 (≥5.04%); antimicrobial activity against the bacteria S. Enteritidis ATCC 564 (≥6 mm), Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19117 (≥6 mm), Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 8702 (≥3 mm), and the fungi Penicillium nordicum MUM 08.16 (inhibition ≥ 64.8%). In addition, the strains showed the ability to adsorb the mycotoxins aflatoxin B1 (≥40%) and ochratoxin A (≥34%). These results indicate that LAB strains from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives are potentially probiotic and antifungal candidates that can be used for food biopreservation.

Abstract
Recent signs of progress in functional foods and nutraceuticals highlighted the favorable impact of bioactive molecules on human health and longevity. As an outcome of the fermentation process, an increasing interest is developed in bee products. Bee bread (BB) is a different product intended for humans and bees, resulting from bee pollen's lactic fermentation in the honeycombs, abundant in polyphenols, nutrients (vitamins and proteins), fatty acids, and minerals. BB conservation is correlated to bacteria metabolites, mainly created by Pseudomonas spp., Lactobacillus spp., and Saccharomyces spp., which give lactic acid bacteria the ability to outperform other microbial groups. Because of enzymatic transformations, the fermentation process increases the content of new compounds. After the fermentation process is finalized, the meaningful content of lactic acid and several metabolites prevent the damage caused by various pathogens that could influence the quality of BB. Over the last few years, there has been an increase in bee pollen fermentation processes to unconventional dietary and functional supplements. The use of the chosen starters improves the bioavailability and digestibility of bioactive substances naturally found in bee pollen. As a consequence of enzymatic changes, the fermentation process enhances BB components and preserves them against loss of characteristics. In this aspect, the present review describes the current biotechnological advancements in the development of BB rich in beneficial components derived from bee pollen fermentation and its use as a food supplement and probiotic product with increased shelf life and multiple health benefits.

Abstract
The balance of the gut microbiome is important for the honey bee’s growth and development, immune function and defense against pathogens. The use of a beneficial bacteria-based strategy for the prevention and biocontrol of American foulbrood (AFB) and European foulbrood (EFB) diseases in honey bees offers interesting prospects. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are common inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract of the honey bee. Among LABs associated with bee gut microbiota, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (previously Lactobacillus plantarum) and Apilactobacillus kunkeei (formerly classified as Lactobacillus kunkeei) are two of the most abundant species. In this study, four Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains and four Apilactobacillus kunkeei strains, isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) were selected for their in vitro inhibition ability of Paenibacillus larvae ATCC 9545 and Melissococccus plutonius ATCC 35311. In addition, these LABs have been characterized through some biochemical and functional characteristics: cell surface properties (hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation), carbohydrates assimilation and enzymatic activities. The antimicrobial, biochemical and cell surface properties of these LABs have been functional to their candidature as potential probiotics in beekeeping and for the biocontrol of AFB and EFB diseases.

Abstract
The present study investigated whether the surface layer (S-layer), which is known to have a varying effect from strain to strain on aggregation, adhesion ability, also has an effect on the resistance of bacteria to digestive enzymes, phenol, lysozymes. The effect of S-layers on the resistance against various enzymes, aggregation and adhesion abilities, and strain specificity were determined of eight Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains. Strains were treated with 5 M lithium chloride (LiCl) to extract the S-layers, the presence of this layer in those microorganisms was demonstrated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Scanning electron microscopy was used to visualize the separation of the S-layer, which surrounds the microorganism, from the microorganism by the LiCl. The images were taken three times, once at the beginning, once 30 min later, and once at the end of this process, which took 2 h in total. The effect against enzymes varied depending on the strain, but it was determined that all the tested strains had a serious loss of viability against phenol in the absence of an S-layer. Lpb. plantarum DA100 showed a maximum decrease against gastrointestinal system enzymes after the LiCl (96.48 ± 0.03% before and 66.46 ± 0.01% after LiCl). Lpb. plantarum DA255 showed a significant decrease against lysozyme (99.11 ± 0.00% before and 62.80 ± 0.0% after LiCl). Removal of the S-layer greatly affected the adhesion ability of some strains, while for others there was hardly any change. The results showed that the role of the S-layer may be strain-specific, the rate of effect can vary. The primary function of S-layer proteins is thought to contribute to the adhesion ability of bacteria. There are limited studies that have reported the protective property of this layer against various enzymes, however, our results showed that S-layer could be one of the resistance strategies developed by bacteria against enzymes.

W ostatnich czasach można zaobserwować duży wzrost zainteresowania relacjami między człowiekiem a mikroorganizmami zasiedlającymi jego organizm. Licznie występują w oraz na ciele człowieka, a ich liczba przekracza liczbę komórek ludzkiego organizmu. Udoskonalenie technik badawczych pozwala lepiej zrozumieć molekularne podłoże tych oddziaływań, co być może pozwoli na wykorzystanie w terapiach tych mikroorganizmów, które korzystnie wpływają na organizm człowieka. W artykule podsumowano dotychczasową wiedzę na temat fizjologii licznie występującej w przewodzie pokarmowym bakterii Akkermansia muciniphila i jej wpływu na organizm gospodarza. Opisano właściwości A. muciniphila, jej funkcjonowanie w środowisku przewodu pokarmowego oraz relacje (zarówno antagonistyczne jak i symbiotyczne) z innymi tam bytującymi mikroorganizmami. Przedstawiono także mechanizmy oddziaływania A. muciniphila na barierę jelitową, układ immunologiczny oraz metabolizm energetyczny gospodarza. Ponadto opisano jej rolę w patogenezie i terapii chorób, w tym m.in. cukrzycy typu 2, nieswoistego zapalenia jelit, zaburzeń neurologicznych, astmy, a także jej wpływ na odpowiedź pacjenta na terapie przeciwnowotworowe oparte na działaniu układu odpornościowego. Duże zainteresowanie tą bakterią, a także przytoczone wyniki badań, w tym tych sprawdzających bezpieczeństwo jej stosowania, wskazują, że A. muciniphila może być obiecującym kandydatem na probiotyk nowej generacji. Niewątpliwie jednak przed dopuszczeniem A. muciniphila do powszechnego stosowania konieczne są dalsze badania z udziałem ludzi, a także wnikliwa ocena bezpieczeństwa jej stosowania.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila, as a member of the gut microbiota, has been proposed as a next-generation probiotic. Liver fibrosis is the main determinant of liver dysfunction and mortality in patients with chronic liver disease. In this study, we aimed to determine the beneficial effects of live and pasteurized A. muciniphila and its extracellular vesicles (EVs) on the prevention of liver fibrosis. The response of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to live and pasteurized A. muciniphila and its EVs was examined in quiescent, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated LX-2 cells. Liver fibrosis was induced in 8-week-old C57BL/6 mice, using a high-fat diet (HFD) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) administration for 4 weeks. The mice were concomitantly treated via oral gavage with three forms of bacteria. The relative expression of different fibrosis and inflammatory markers was assessed in the tissues. Histological markers, serum biochemical parameters, and cytokine production were also analyzed, and their correlations with the relative abundance of targeted fecal bacteria were examined. All A. muciniphila preparations exhibited protective effects against HSC activation; however, EVs showed the greatest activity in HSC regression. Oral gavage with A. muciniphila ameliorated the serum biochemical and inflammatory cytokines and improved liver and colon histopathological damages. The relative expression of fibrosis and inflammatory biomarkers was substantially attenuated in the tissues of all treated mice. The composition of targeted stool bacteria in the live A. muciniphila group was clearly different from that in the fibrosis group. This study indicated that A. muciniphila and its derivatives could successfully protect against HFD/CCl4-induced liver injury. However, further studies are needed to prove the beneficial effects of A. muciniphila on the liver. IMPORTANCE Akkermansia muciniphila, as a member of the gut microbiota, has been proposed as a next-generation probiotic. Liver fibrosis is the main determinant of liver dysfunction and mortality in patients with chronic liver disease. In this study, we aimed to determine the beneficial effects of live and pasteurized A. muciniphila and its extracellular vesicles (EVs) on the prevention of liver fibrosis. The results of the present study indicated that oral administration of live and pasteurized A. muciniphila and its EVs could normalize the fecal targeted bacteria composition, improve the intestinal permeability, modulate inflammatory responses, and subsequently prevent liver injury in HFD/CCl4-administered mice. Following the improvement of intestinal and liver histopathology, HFD/CCl4-induced kidney damage and adipose tissue inflammation were also ameliorated by different A. muciniphila treatments.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate probiotic, antimicrobial, technological and safety properties of lactobacillus strains isolated from local Iranian cheese made from raw milk. Six different samples were prepared, after serial dilution, culture was performed on MRS culture medium. The gram-positive and catalase-negative lactobacillus strains were subjected to grouping and identifying using biochemical tests, carbohydrates fermentation profiles, and 16S rDNA analysis. The results of sequence analysis showed the Lactobacillus spp. belonged to Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei. After 3 hr incubation at pH=2, 3-6 log units of strains decreased which Lactobacillus acidophilus (B14) and Lactobacillus brevis (B2) showed highest resistance to low pH as well as simulated GIT juices. The highest and lowest hydrophobicity degree was belonged to L. acidophilus (B14) (65.9%) and L. casei (B22) (25.6%), respectively. Also, the highest auto-aggregation and coaggregation were observed in L. acidophilus (B14) (51.3%) and L. plantarum (B20) (43.6%). The adhered percentage of strains varied from 2.5% to 14.6%. L. plantarum (B20) showed highest proteolytic activity followed by L. acidophilus (B14). Also, the highest autolytic activity belonged to L. acidophilus (B14). All of the strains showed low acidifying potential, except for L. acidophilus (B17) which decreased 2.05 unit of pH after 24 hr. The isolates did not show lipolytic activity as well as biogenic amines production (except L. brevis B3). All of the strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol and erythromycin except L. acidophilus (B15) and L. casei (B22). All strains showed no hemolysis activity which make them safe for consumption. Based on the obtained results, L. acidophilus (B14) presented the best probiotic and technological characteristics and is proposed for using as coculture in the dairy industrial.

Abstract
Ascosphaera apis is an entomopathogenic fungus that affects honeybees. In stressful conditions, this fungus (due not only to its presence, but also to the combination of other biotic and abiotic stressors) can cause chalkbrood disease. In recent years, there has been increasing attention paid towards the use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the honeybees' diets to improve their health, productivity and ability to resist infections by pathogenic microorganisms. The screening of 22 strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, isolated from the gastrointestinal tracts of honeybees and beebread, led to the selection of five strains possessing high antagonistic activity against A. apis. This study focused on the antifungal activity of these five strains against A. apis DSM 3116 and DSM 3117 using different matrices: cell lysate, broth culture, cell-free supernatant and cell pellet. In addition, some functional properties and the antioxidant activity of the five L. plantarum strains were evaluated. All five strains exhibited high antagonistic activity against A. apis, good surface cellular properties (extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production and biofilm formation) and antioxidant activity. Although preliminary, these results are encouraging, and in future investigations, the effectiveness of these bacteria as probiotics in honeybee nutrition will be tested in vivo in the context of an eco-friendly strategy for the biological control of chalkbrood disease.

Abstract
The human gastrointestinal microbiota (GIM) is a complex and diverse ecosystem that consists of community of fungi, viruses, protists and majorly bacteria. The association of several human illnesses, such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergy, metabolic syndrome and cancers, have been linked directly or indirectly to compromise in the integrity of the GIM, for which some medical interventions have been proposed or attempted. This review highlights and gives update on various technologies, including microfluidics, high-through-put sequencing, metabolomics, metatranscriptomics and culture in GIM research and their applications in gastrointestinal microbiota therapy, with a view to raise interest in the evaluation, validation and eventual use of these technologies in diagnosis and the incorporation of therapies in routine clinical practice.

Abstract
Gut microorganisms are vital for many aspects of human health, and the commensal bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila has repeatedly been identified as a key component of intestinal microbiota. Reductions in A. muciniphila abundance are associated with increased prevalence of metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. It was recently discovered that administration of A. muciniphila has beneficial effects and that these are not diminished, but rather enhanced after pasteurization. Pasteurized A. muciniphila is proposed for use as a food ingredient, and was therefore subjected to a nonclinical safety assessment, comprising genotoxicity assays (bacterial reverse mutation and in vitro mammalian cell micronucleus tests) and a 90-day toxicity study. For the latter, Han Wistar rats were administered with the vehicle or pasteurized A. muciniphila at doses of 75, 375 or 1500 mg/kg body weight/day (equivalent to 4.8 × 109 , 2.4 × 1010 , or 9.6 × 1010 A. muciniphila cells/kg body weight/day) by oral gavage for 90 consecutive days. The study assessed potential effects on clinical observations (including detailed arena observations and a modified Irwin test), body weight, food and water consumption, clinical pathology, organ weights, and macroscopic and microscopic pathology. The results of both in vitro genotoxicity studies were negative. No test item-related adverse effects were observed in the 90-day study; therefore, 1500 mg/kg body weight/day (the highest dose tested, equivalent to 9.6 × 1010 A. muciniphila cells/kg body weight/day) was established as the no-observed-adverse-effect-level. These results support that pasteurized A. muciniphila is safe for use as a food ingredient.

Abstract
Paenibacillus larvae is the causative agent of American foulbrood (AFB), a severe bacterial disease that affects larvae of honeybees. The present study evaluated, in vitro, antimicrobial activity of sixty-one Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains, against P. larvae ATCC 9545. Five strains (P8, P25, P86, P95 and P100) that showed the greatest antagonism against P. larvae ATCC 9545 were selected for further physiological and biochemical characterizations. In particular, the hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, exopolysaccharides production, osmotic tolerance, enzymatic activity and carbohydrate assimilation patterns were evaluated. The five L. plantarum selected strains showed suitable physical and biochemical properties for their use as probiotics in the honeybee diet. The selection and availability of new selected bacteria with good functional characteristics and with antagonistic activity against P. larvae opens up interesting perspectives for new biocontrol strategies of diseases such as AFB.

Abstract
In the last years several human commensals have emerged from the gut microbiota studies as potential probiotics or therapeutic agents. Strains of human gut inhabitants such as Akkermansia, Bacteroides, or Faecalibacterium have shown several interesting bioactivities and are thus currently being considered as food supplements or as live biotherapeutics, as is already the case with other human commensals such as bifidobacteria. The large-scale use of these bacteria will pose many challenges and drawbacks mainly because they are quite sensitive to oxygen and/or very difficult to cultivate. This review highlights the properties of some of the most promising human commensals bacteria and summarizes the most up-to-date knowledge on their potential health effects. A comprehensive outlook on the potential strategies currently employed and/or available to produce, stabilize, and deliver these microorganisms is also presented.

Abstract
: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are an important group of honeybee gut microbiota. These bacteria are involved in food digestion, stimulate the immune system, and may antagonize undesirable microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. Lactobacillus kunkeei is a fructophilic lactic acid bacterium (FLAB) most frequently found in the gastrointestinal tracts of honeybees. Ascosphaera apis is an important pathogenic fungus of honeybee larvae; it can colonize the intestine, especially in conditions of nutritional or environmental stress that cause microbial dysbiosis. In this work, some functional properties of nine selected L. kunkeei strains were evaluated. The study focused on the antifungal activity of these strains against A. apis DSM 3116, using different matrices: cell lysate, broth culture, cell-free supernatant, and cell pellet. The cell lysate showed the highest antifungal activity. Moreover, the strains were shown to possess good cell-surface properties (hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, and biofilm production) and a good resistance to high sugar concentrations. These L. kunkeei strains were demonstrated to be functional for use in "probiotic syrup", useful to restore the symbiotic communities of the intestine in case of dysbiosis and to exert a prophylactic action against A. apis.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum, has been applied, for centuries, for food and drink fermentations. Given the benefits associated with fermented products, Lb. plantarum strains have captured considerable industrial and scientific interest, so that they are included as fundamental components of functional foods. Indeed, some strains are marketed as probiotics. In the present study, food- and gut-associated Lb. plantarum isolates were genetically characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and phenotypically characterized for properties that could influence their probiotic potential. MLST and phylogenetic analysis stratified 22 Lb. plantarum isolates into six lineages. The isolates were further phenotypically characterized by an in vitro assay to assess their potential gut community influence via a limited number of assays including acidification activity, strain displacement activity and their intrinsic range of antibiotic resistance. Given growing recognition of the benefits of fermented foods, and the prevalence of Lb. plantarum in these applications, this study highlights analysis of a subset of preliminary important strain-specific features. These features are of interest to all stakeholders, to inform isolate comparison and selection for current functional food associations, and that can serve as a basis for future strain and food-microbe fermentation product development.
