A Rotational Slurry Bioreactor Accelerates Biodegradation of A-Fuel in Oil-Contaminated Soil Even under Low Temperature Conditions

Superhydrophobic magnetic Fe3O4 polyurethane sponges for oil-water separation and oil-spill recovery

The effective and affordable separation of oil and water, a crucial process in the safe handling of environmental disasters such as crude oil spills and recovery of valuable resources, is a highly sought-after yet challenging task. Herein, superhydrophobic PU sponge was fabricated for the fast and cost-effective adsorptive separation of oil and different organic solvents from water. Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell microspheres were dip-coated on the surface of porous materials via a dip-coating process, thereby endowing them with superhydrophobicity. Owing to the hydrophobic interaction between OTS molecules and oil and increased capillary force in the micropores, the resulting superhydrophobic sponge served as a selective oil-sorbent scaffold for absorbing oil from oil-water mixtures, including oil-water suspensions and emulsions. Remarkably, after the recovery of the adsorbed oil via mechanical extrusion, these superhydrophobic materials could be reused multiple times and maintain their oil-water separation efficacy even after 10 oil-water separation cycles.

Research progress of bio-slurry remediation technology for organic contaminated soil

Bio-slurry remediation technology, as a controllable bioremediation method, has the significant advantage of high remediation efficiency and can effectively solve the problems of high energy consumption and secondary pollution of traditional organic pollution site remediation technology. To further promote the application of this technology in the remediation of organically polluted soil, this paper summarizes the importance and advantages of bio-slurry remediation technology compared with traditional soil remediation technologies (physical, chemical, and biological). It introduces the technical infrastructure and its technological processes. Then, various factors that may affect its remediation performance are discussed. By analyzing the applications of this technology to the remediation of typical organic pollutant-(polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs), total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH), and pesticide) contaminated sites, the following key features of this remediation technology are summarised: (1) the technology has a wide range of applications and can be used in a versatile way in the remediation projects of various types of organic-contaminated soil sites such as in clay, sand, and high organic matter content soil; (2) the technology is highly controllable. Adjusting environmental parameters and operational conditions, such as nutrients, organic carbon sources (bio-stimulation), inoculants (bio-augmentation), water-to-soil ratio, etc., can control the remediation process, thus improving the restoration performance. To sum up, this bio-slurry remediation technology is an efficient, controllable and green soil remediation technology that has broad application prospects.

Bioremediation of soil contaminated with toxic mixed reactive azo dyes by co-cultured cells of Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus subtilis

Azo dyes, known for its toxicity and mutagenicity, are used by textile industries. Bioremediation serves the best alternative treatment process due to its eco-friendly nature and cost-effectiveness. Degradation using individual bacteria promotes azo dye removal, while the degradation is enhanced using the immobilization method. Bio-carrier promotes the attachment of the bacterial strains and increases azo dye degradation. The present study focuses on the biodegradation of Reactive Red (RR), Reactive Brown (RB), Reactive Black dye (RBL), and mixed dyes in a soil slurry bioreactor containing free cells, co-culture, and immobilized cells. The physico-chemical analysis and soil characteristics were determined. The free cells of Bacillus cereus showed degradation of azo dyes - 79.42 ± 0.03% RR, 78.78 ± 0.02% RBL; 70.76 ± 0.03% RB, and 84.89 ± 0.05% of mixed dyes respectively. Enterobacter cloacae free cells resulted in degradation of 72.87 ± 0.01% RR, 75.21 ± 0.01% RBL, 74.50 ± 0.02% RB, and 73.39 ± 0.04% mixed dyes respectively. Co-cultured bacterial strains resulted in 77.18 ± 0.03% RR, 80.27 ± 0.02% RBL, 76.97 ± 0.02% RB and 86.29 ± 0.05% mixed dyes respectively. The immobilization of Bacillus cereus and Enterobacter cloacae on 2% corn starch resulted in 98.4 ± 0.01% degradation of RR, 89.8 ± 0.09% degradation of RB, 99.4 ± 0.05% of RBL, and 98.1 ± 0.08% of mixed reactive dyes respectively.

Probing the biological toxicity of pyrene to the earthworm Eisenia fetida and the toxicity pathways of oxidative damage: A systematic study at the animal and molecular levels

Pyrene (Pyr), a widely used tetracyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, enters soil in large quantities and causes environmental pollution due to its production and mining. In order to systematically study the biotoxicity of pyrene to model organisms Eisenia fetida in soil, experiments were carried out from four dimensions: animal, tissue, cell and molecule. Experimental results proved that the mortality rate increased with increasing concentration and time of exposure to pyrene, while the mean body weight and spawning rate decreased. Meanwhile, when the pyrene concentration reached 900 mg/kg, the seminal vesicle and longitudinal muscle of the earthworm showed obvious atrophy. Experimental results at the cellular level showed that pyrene induced cell membrane damage and Ca²⁺ influx triggered mitochondrial membrane depolarization and a surge in ROS levels. Oxidative stress causes damage to proteins and lipids and DNA inside cells. When the mortality rate was 91.67 %, the Olive Tail Movement (OTM) of the comet experiment reached 15. The results of molecular level tests showed that pyrene inhibited the activity of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) mainly by changing the microenvironment and secondary structure of amino acid Tyr 108. The weakened function of direct antioxidant enzymes may be the root cause of the excessive increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells. The systematic approach used in this study enriches the network of toxic pathways in toxicological studies, and basic data on the biological toxicity of pyrene can provide support for future soil contamination detection.

Effect of oil pollution on the ecological condition of soils and bottom sediments of the arctic region (Yakutia)

Oil and petroleum products are known to be among the most widespread soil pollutants. The risk of emergencies is sure to increase greatly in conditions of abnormally low temperatures. Oil and oil products are not only toxic to the environment, but can also have a negative impact on the state of the permafrost zone, accelerating the processes of permafrost degradation. The goal of the research was to study the soils and bottom sediments for oil pollution in the Arctic region of Yakutia. The research was carried out with using the complex of geochemical and microbiological methods of analysis. It had shown that at present oil pollution was mainly concentrated on the objects bearing a high technogenic load. However, some migration of hydrocarbons was observed with melt, seasonal melt and rainwaters, as a result of which the natural background of the nearby territories became technogenic character. In the Arctic conditions for the first time according to the obtained data on geochemical and microbiological studies oxidative destruction of oil pollutants in soil occurred mainly under the influence of physic and chemical environmental factors, not by microbial oxidation. Sluggish processes of mineralization of organic residues and the transformation of oil pollutants by the type of putrefaction led to the colonization of oil-polluted soils of the Arctic with putrefying and pathogenic microorganisms. The purpose of further research will be studying the possibility of intensification of soil remediation processes of technologically disturbed soils at abnormally low temperatures.
