Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The human commensal microbiota is now widely accepted as a key regulator of human health and disease. The composition of the mucosal associated microbiota has been shown to play a critical role in the lung health. The role of the mucosal microbiota in the development and severity of allergy, asthma, and occupational lung disease is only beginning to take shape. However, advances in our understanding of these links have tremendous potential to led to new clinical interventions to reduce allergy, asthma, and occupational lung disease morbidity. RECENT FINDINGS We review recent work describing the relationship and role of the commensal microbiota in the development of allergy, asthma, and occupational lung disease. Our review primarily focuses on occupational exposures and the effects of the microbiome, both in composition and function. Data generated from these studies may lead to the development of interventions targeted at establishing and maintaining a healthy microbiota. We also highlight the role of environmental exposures and the effects on the commensal microbial community and their potential association with occupational lung disease. This review explores the current research describing the role of the human microbiome in the regulation of pulmonary health and disease, with a specific focus on the role of the mucosal microbiota in the development of allergy, asthma, and occupational lung disease.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global public health, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widely distributed across humans, animals, and environment. Farming environments are emerging as a key research area for ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). While the skin is an important reservoir of ARGs and ARB, transmission mechanisms between farming environments and human skin remain unclear. Previous studies confirmed that swine farm environmental exposures alter skin microbiome, but the timeline of these changes is ill defined. To improve understanding of these changes and to determine the specific time, we designed a cohort study of swine farm workers and students through collected skin and environmental samples to explore the impact of daily occupational exposure in swine farm on human skin microbiome. Results indicated that exposure to livestock-associated environments where microorganisms are richer than school environment can reshape the human skin microbiome and antibiotic resistome. Exposure of 5 h was sufficient to modify the microbiome and ARG structure in workers' skin by enriching microorganisms and ARGs. These changes were preserved once formed. Further analysis indicated that ARGs carried by host microorganisms may transfer between the environment with workers' skin and have the potential to expand to the general population using farm workers as an ARG vector. These results raised concerns about potential transmission of ARGs to the broader community. Therefore, it is necessary to take corresponding intervention measures in the production process to reduce the possibility of ARGs and ARB transmission.

Abstract
This study reports the search of available data published regarding microbial occupational exposure assessment in poultries, following the PRISMA methodology. Air collection through filtration was the most frequently used. The most commonly used passive sampling method was material collection such as dust, cages, soils, sediment, and wastewater. Regarding assays applied, the majority of studies comprised culture-based methods, but molecular tools were also frequently used. Screening for antimicrobial susceptibility was performed only for bacteria; cytotoxicity, virological and serological assays were also performed. Most of the selected studies focused on bacteria, although fungi, endotoxins, and β-glucans were also assessed. The only study concerning fungi and mycotoxins reported the carcinogenic mycotoxin AFB1. This study gives a comprehensive overview of microbial contamination in the poultry industry, emphasizing this setting as a potential reservoir of microbial pathogens threatening human, animal, and environmental health. Additionally, this research helps to provide a sampling and analysis protocol proposal to evaluate the microbiological contamination in these facilities. Few articles were found reporting fungal contamination in poultry farms worldwide. In addition, information concerning fungal resistance profile and mycotoxin contamination remain scarce. Overall, a One Health approach should be incorporated in exposure assessments and the knowledge gaps identified in this paper should be addressed in further research.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) remains a predominant zoonotic pathogen because of its colonization in poultry, survivability in the environment, and increasing antibiotic-resistance pattern. Plant-derived phenolics, gallic acid (GA), protocatechuic acid (PA), and vanillic acids (VA) have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in vitro; therefore, this study collected chicken cecal fluid and supplemented it with these phenolics to evaluate their potential for eliminating ST and mod-ulating the microbiota of complex environments. ST was quantified through plating, while micro-biome analysis was performed through pair-end 16S-rRNA gene sequencing. CFU/mL of ST in cecal fluid with GA was significantly reduced by 3.28 and 2.78 log at 24 h and 48 h, while PA only had a slight numerical decrease. VA significantly reduced ST by 4.81 and 5.20 log at 24 h and 48 h. Changes in relative abundance of major phyla were observed at 24 h for samples with GA and VA as Firmicute levels increased 8.30% and 20.90%, while Proteobacteria decreased 12.86% and 18.48%, respectively. Significant changes in major genre were observed in Acinetobacter (3.41% for GA) and Escherichia (13.53% for VA), while Bifidobacterium increased (3.44% for GA) and Lactobacillus remained unchanged. Results suggest that phenolic compounds exert different effects on certain pathogens, while supporting some commensal bacteria.

Abstract
For decades research has centered on identifying the ideal balanced skin microbiome that prevents disease and on developing therapeutics to foster this balance. However, this single idealized balance may not exist. The skin microbiome changes across the lifespan. This is reflected in the dynamic shifts of the skin microbiome's diverse, inter-connected community of microorganisms with age. While there are core skin microbial taxa, the precise community composition for any individual person is determined by local skin physiology, genetics, microbe-host interactions, and microbe-microbe interactions. As a key interface with the environment, the skin surface and its appendages are also constantly exchanging microbes with close personal contacts and the environment. Hormone fluctuations and immune system maturation also drive age-dependent changes in skin physiology that support different microbial community structures over time. Here, we review recent insights into the factors that shape the skin microbiome throughout life. Collectively, the works summarized within this review highlight how, depending on where we are in lifespan, our skin supports robust microbial communities, while still maintaining microbial features unique to us. This review will also highlight how disruptions to this dynamic microbial balance can influence risk for dermatological diseases as well as impact lifelong health.

Abstract
Cosmetics and personal care items are used worldwide and administered straight to the skin. The hazardous nature of the chemical surfactant utilized in the production of cosmetics has caused alarm on a global scale. Therefore, bacterial biosurfactants (BS) are becoming increasingly popular in industrial product production as a biocompatible, low-toxic alternative surfactant. Chemical surfactants can induce allergic responses and skin irritations; thus, they should be replaced with less harmful substances for skin health. The cosmetic industry seeks novel biological alternatives to replace chemical compounds and improve product qualities. Most of these chemicals have a biological origin and can be obtained from plant, bacterial, fungal, and algal sources. Various biological molecules have intriguing capabilities, such as biosurfactants, vitamins, antioxidants, pigments, enzymes, and peptides. These are safe, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly than chemical options. Plant-based biosurfactants, such as saponins, offer numerous advantages over synthetic surfactants, i.e., biodegradable, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly nature. Saponins are a promising source of natural biosurfactants for various industrial and academic applications. However, microbial glycolipids and lipopeptides have been used in biotechnology and cosmetics due to their multifunctional character, including detergency, emulsifying, foaming, and skin moisturizing capabilities. In addition, some of them have the potential to be used as antibacterial agents. In this review, we like to enlighten the application of microbial biosurfactants for replacing chemical surfactants in existing cosmetic and personal skincare pharmaceutical formulations due to their antibacterial, skin surface moisturizing, and low toxicity characteristics.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica (SE) is a major foodborne bacterial pathogen in the United States, commonly found as the normal flora of various animals that is attributed to causing at least 1.2 million infections annually. Poultry plays a major role in disseminating SE through direct contact with live animals and consumption of contaminated products. Vaccinating poultry against SE is a sustainable approach that can reduce SE in the host, preventing future infections in humans. An intracellular autolytic SE serovar Typhimurium vaccine (STLT2+P13+19) was developed by integrating genes 13 (holin) and 19 (lysozyme) of bacteriophage P22 into the bacterial chromosome. These were inserted downstream of sseA, an SPI-2 chaperone in SE that expresses during the intracellular phase of SE. Intracellular viability of STLT2+P13+19 reduced by 94.42% at 24 hr compared to the wild type in chicken macrophage cells (HD-11), whereas growth rate and adhesion ability remained unchanged. Inoculating STLT2+P13+19 in HD-11 significantly enhanced the relative log fold expression of genes associated to production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 p40, IL-18, and GM-CSF) and Toll-like-receptors (TRL-3 and 7). Vaccination of an in vivo chicken model demonstrated significant changes in secretion of iNOS, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, and TNF-α, as well as a reduction in the intestinal colonization of SE serovar Typhimurium. Microbiome analysis of cecal fluid using 16S rRNA gene sequencing also showed modulation of intestinal microbial composition, specifically a decrease in relative abundance of Proteobacteria and increasing Firmicutes. This study provides insight into a novel vaccine design that could make food products safer without the use of synthetic compounds.

Abstract
Introduction Since its complete mapping, the human skin microbiome has become an important area of research related to skin health. The human skin is populated by an environment of microorganisms, fungi, insects, and viruses that is collectively known as the microbiota, and the complete genomic contribution to the skin is called the microbiome. The terms are different but frequently used interchangeably. Measuring the skin’s microbial diversity can be done, but it is a sophisticated technique that is performed using expensive instruments that can sequence the 16S ribosomal RNA of the microorganisms. Finding more rapid and less costly methods to analyze the changes in the skin’s microbial biome is desirable. Methods A study was conducted on thirty (30) inner volar forearms to see if ATP biofluorescence could be employed to examine skin microbial dysbiosis caused by the application of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Fifteen individuals were examined on both arms for a total of thirty inner volar forearms using a Charm Science® NovaLum® ATP analyzer to examine in a broad sense the skin’s total microbial population and how it is affected after surface treatment with 3% hydrogen peroxide over a 24-hour period. Results It was found that surface treatment of the skin with three cotton swab applications of 3% hydrogen peroxide five minutes apart was able to statistically significantly suppress the expression of ATP biofluorescence compared against un-swabbed sites and the effects remained significant for six hours following the H2O2 treatment. After 8 hours, and into the 24th hour, the ATP biofluorescence difference returns to non-statistical significance indicating potential return of the stable microbiota. Discussion Using ATP biofluorescence to detect possible sanitizer-induced microbial dysbiosis may be a rapid way to examine how skin treatments may impact the return of microbially disrupted skin to its normal state and how surface treatments may impact the rate of return to normal after a disruptive event.

Abstract
The characterization of human microbiota and the impact of its modifications on the health of individuals represent a current topic of great interest for the world scientific community. Scientific evidence is emerging regarding the role that microbiota has in the onset of important chronic illnesses. Since individuals spend most of their life at work, occupational exposures may have an impact on the organism’s microbiota. The purpose of this review is to explore the influence that different occupational exposures have on human microbiota in order to set a new basis for workers’ health protection and disease prevention. The literature search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus. A total of 5818 references emerged from the online search, and 31 articles were included in the systematic review (26 original articles and 5 reviews). Exposure to biological agents (in particular direct contact with animals) was the most occupational risk factor studied, and it was found involved in modifications of the microbiota of workers. Changes in microbiota were also found in workers exposed to chemical agents or subjected to work-related stress and altered dietary habits caused by specific microclimate characteristics or long trips. Two studies evaluated the role of microbiota changes on the development of occupational lung diseases. Occupational factors can interface with the biological rhythms of the bacteria of the microbiota and can contribute to its modifications and to the possible development of diseases. Future studies are needed to better understand the role of the microbiota and its connection with occupational exposure to promote projects for the prevention and protection of global health.

Abstract
As a traditional agricultural system, integrated crop-livestock farms (ICLFs) involve the production of animals and crops in a shared environment. The ICLFs in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States practice sustainable manure aging or composting processes to provide an on-farm source of soil amendment for use as natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for crop production. However, crop fertilization by soil incorporation of aged manure or compost may introduce different microbes and alter the soil microbial community. The aim of this study was to characterize the influence of aged or composted manure application on the diversity of soil bacterial community in ICLFs. Soil samples from six ICLFs in Maryland were collected before (pre-crop) and during the season (2020–2021) and used to analyze soil bacterial microbiome by 16S rDNA sequencing. Results showed that both phylum- and genus-level alterations of soil bacterial communities were associated with amendment of aged or composted manure. Particularly, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were enriched, while Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi were reduced after manure product application. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of Bacillus was decreased, while two zoonotic pathogens, Salmonella and Listeria, were enriched by manure amendments. Overall, animal manure amendment of soil increased the phylogenetic diversity, but reduced the richness and evenness of the soil bacterial communities. Although manure composting management in ICLFs benefits agricultural sustainable production, the amendments altered the soil bacterial communities and were associated with the finding of two major zoonotic bacterial pathogens, which raises the possibility of their potential transfer to fresh horticultural produce crops that may be produced on the manured soils and then subsequently consumed without cooking.

Abstract
In modern societies, people spend most of their time in the built environment which harbors unique microbial assemblages with the potential to influence human health. However, how the occupants of buildings influence indoor microbial communities remains under-researched. Here, we investigated the diversities of the bacterial communities of a typical Chinese middle school to demonstrate the effects of occupant activities on bacterial communities inside classrooms. The results showed that samples taken from classrooms exhibited higher microbial diversity compared to samples collected from public areas such as gym and restaurant, suggesting the occupant activities could increase the diversities of the indoor microbial communities. Moreover, we also found that the duration of occupation strongly influence the presence/absence of phylogenetic lineages of the bacterial communities, the type of occupants, on the other hand, affect the relative abundances of bacterial taxa. In addition, samples taken from classrooms with longer occupation time exhibited a better fit to the Sloan Neutral Community Model for Prokaryotes, suggesting that room occupation influences the assembly process of microbial communities. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that the duration of occupation and the type of occupants influence the microbiome of the built environment.

Abstract
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and it protects the body from the external environment. It has become the topic of interest of researchers from various scientific fields. Microorganisms ensure the proper functioning of the skin. Of great importance, are the mutual relations between such microorganisms and their responses to environmental impacts, as dysbiosis may contribute to serious skin diseases. Molecular methods, used for microorganism identification, allow us to gain a better understanding of the skin microbiome. The presented article contains the latest reports on the skin microbiota in health and disease. The review discusses the relationship between a properly functioning microbiome and the body's immune system, as well as the impact of internal and external factors on the human skin microbiome.
