Spatial Macroscale Variability of the Role of Mineral Matter in Concentrating Some Trace Elements in Bituminous Coal in a Coal Basin—A Case Study from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Poland

Assessment of contamination, mobility and application of selected technology-critical elements as indicators of anthropogenic pollution of bottom sediments

The study investigates the potential of technology-critical elements (TCEs) in the bottom sediments of the Biała Przemsza River as indicators of anthropogenic activities. The mass fractions of TCEs: Ge, Ga, In, Tl, Sb and Te (and other elements) in the sediment were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with the maximum mass fractions: 2.46, 25.6, 0.528, 27.7, 12.5 and 0.293 mg/kg, respectively. Distribution and identification of TCE sources were supported by statistical analysis (principal component analysis coupled with varimax rotation and hierarchical cluster analysis). Assessments of TCE contamination using the geoaccumulation index, pollution index, contamination factor, enrichment factor and the antimony-to-arsenic ratio highlighted the high contamination of bottom sediments by Sb, Ga, Tl, Cd, As, Zn, Pb and moderate contamination by Co, In and V. Distinct behaviour patterns were observed among TCEs, revealing Sb and Tl as potential indicators of Zn-Pb ore mining activities. Co, V, Ge and, to a lesser extent, Te emerged as promising indicators of coal and coal fly ash effluents. Sequential chemical extraction of TCEs showed that Sb, In and Tl had the highest mobility from sediments. The Risk Assessment Code calculations suggest, that in the Biała Przemsza River bottom sediments, there is an average risk of contamination by As, Tl and Mn. Soluble forms of Tl, Ge, Sb, Te and In were identified in descending order, indicating their bioavailability.

The impact of saline mine water on fate of mineral elements and organic matter: The case study of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin

The work presented here provides a complex environmental impact of sediments in vicinity to the area of the former Lazy coal mine site in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Czech Republic). The main aim of this work has been to determine the degree of contamination, to describe the organic matter, and to carry out sorption isotherms to see the size and distribution of pores in the monitored sediments that are the crucial parameters to assumption of removal mechanisms of elements carried in mine water. The results show that the greatest enrichment of Mn, Sr, Ba, and was in sediments of the first tens of meters from the mine water discharge sediments. Ba and Sr were precipitated as mineral barite and thus formed a dominant insoluble component in the river sediments, which were further carried by water flow towards the water reservoirs. Predominant amounts of fossil material and smaller quantities of carbonized and recent organic matter were altered by weathering and erosion processes. The coal materials have a relatively beneficial sorption capacity, which increases with the carbon content. The overburden waste should be considered for use in removing heavy metals in-situ.

Antifungal Activity and Biosynthetic Potential of New Streptomyces sp. MW-W600-10 Strain Isolated from Coal Mine Water

Crop infections by fungi lead to severe losses in food production and pose risks for human health. The increasing resistance of pathogens to fungicides has led to the higher usage of these chemicals, which burdens the environment and highlights the need to find novel natural biocontrol agents. Members of the genus Streptomyces are known to produce a plethora of bioactive compounds. Recently, researchers have turned to extreme and previously unexplored niches in the search for new strains with antimicrobial activities. One such niche are underground coal mine environments. We isolated the new Streptomyces sp. MW-W600-10 strain from coal mine water samples collected at 665 m below ground level. We examined the antifungal activity of the strain against plant pathogens Fusarium culmorum DSM62188 and Nigrospora oryzae roseF7. Furthermore, we analyzed the strain’s biosynthetic potential with the antiSMASH tool. The strain showed inhibitory activity against both fungi strains. Genome mining revealed that it has 39 BGCs, among which 13 did not show similarity to those in databases. Additionally, we examined the activity of the Streptomyces sp. S-2 strain isolated from black soot against F. culmorum DSM62188. These results show that coal-related strains could be a source of novel bioactive compounds. Future studies will elucidate their full biotechnological potential.

Distribution and Mode of Occurrence of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Sb, Pb in the Feed Coal, Fly Ash, Slag, in the Topsoil and in the Roots of Trees and Undergrowth Downwind of Three Power Stations in Poland

It is supposed that the determination of the content and the mode of occurrence of ecotoxic elements (EE) in feed coal play the most significant role in forecasting distribution of EE in the soil and plants in the vicinity of power stations. Hence, the aim of the work was to analyze the properties of the feed coal, the combustion residues, and the topsoil which are reached by EE together with dust from power stations. The mineral and organic phases, which are the main hosts of EE, were identified by microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, and scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive X-ray methods. The highest content of elements was observed in the Oi and Oe subhorizons of the topsoil. Their hosts are various types of microspheres and char, emitted by power stations. In the areas of long-term industrial activity, there are also sharp-edged grains of magnetite emitted in the past by zinc, lead, and ironworks. The enrichment of the topsoil with these elements resulted in the increase in the content of EE, by between 0.2 times for Co; and 41.0 times for Cd in the roots of Scots pine, common oak and undergrowth, especially in the rhizodermis and the primary cortex and, more seldom, in the axle roller and cortex cells.
