Experimental Evaluation of PM Emission from Red Mud Basins Exposed to Wind Erosion

Halophyte Elymus dahuricus colonization regulates microbial community succession by mediating saline-alkaline and biogenic organic matter in bauxite residue

Alkalinity regulation and nutrient accumulation are critical factors in the construction of plant and microbial communities and soil formation in bauxite residue, and are extremely important for sustainable vegetation restoration in bauxite residue disposal areas. However, the establishment and succession of microbial communities driven by plant colonization-mediated improvements in the physicochemical properties of bauxite residues remain poorly understood. Thus, in this study, we determined the saline-alkali properties and dissolved organic matter (DOM) components under plant growth conditions and explored the microbial community diversity and structure using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The planting of Elymus dahuricus (E. dahuricus) in the bauxite residue resulted in a significant decrease in total alkalinity (TA), exchangeable Na, and electrical conductivity (EC) as well as the release of more tryptophan-like protein compounds and low-molecular-weight humic substances associated with biological activities into the bauxite residue substrate. Taxonomical analysis revealed an initial-stage bacterial and fungal community dominated by alkaline-tolerant Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and Ascomycota, and an increase in the relative abundances of the phyla Bacteroidota, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadota. The biological activities of phylum Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Gemmatimonadota were significantly associated with protein-like and UVA-like humic substances. As eutrophic bacteria, Proteobacteria participate in the transformation of humic substances and can not only utilize small molecules of organic matter and convert them into humic substances but also promote the gradual conversion of humic acids into simple molecular compounds. Our results suggest that plant roots secrete organic matter and microbial metabolites as the main biogenic organic matter that participates in the establishment and succession of the microbial community in bauxite residues. Root length affects bacterial and fungal diversity by mediating the production of protein-like substances.

Contrasted microbial community colonization of a bauxite residue deposit marked by a complex geochemical context

Bauxite residue is the alkaline byproduct generated during alumina extraction and is commonly landfilled in open-air deposits. The growth in global alumina production have raised environmental concerns about these deposits since no large-scale reuses exist to date. Microbial-driven techniques including bioremediation and critical metal bio-recovery are now considered sustainable and cost-effective methods to revalorize bauxite residues. However, the establishment of microbial communities and their active role in these strategies are still poorly understood. We thus determined the geochemical composition of different bauxite residues produced in southern France and explored the development of bacterial and fungal communities using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. Physicochemical parameters were influenced differently by the deposit age and the bauxite origin. Taxonomical analysis revealed an early-stage microbial community dominated by haloalkaliphilic microorganisms and strongly influenced by chemical gradients. Microbial richness, diversity and network complexity increased significantly with the deposit age, reaching an equilibrium community composition similar to typical soils after decades of natural weathering. Our results suggested that salinity, pH, and toxic metals affected the bacterial community structure, while fungal community composition showed no clear correlations with chemical variations.

Emission of Fine Dust from Open Storage of Industrial Materials Exposed to Wind Erosion

A physical-mathematical model has been designed to estimate the emission of dust from the surface of granular materials exposed to wind erosion. The emission model implements the Monte Carlo probabilistic approach, which for a given wind velocity (i.e., shear stress velocity) ascribes the probability of saltation to the particle aggregates composing the erodible surface and calculates the emission of dust aerosol based on the main laws governing the physics of wind-blown particles. The article discusses the application of the emission code to the surfaces of two metal sulphides (PbS and ZnS), which are typically stored in stockpiles in the open yards of industrial plants that operate in the commodity sector, to be used as raw materials for the production of lead and zinc (non-ferrous metals). The results of the simulation were found to be in agreement with the indication provided by the technical literature about the emission potential of the two metal sulphides. The emission model hereby proposed intends to provide an analytical integration to the experimental and empirical Emission Factors (EF) already suggested by the technical and scientific literature about industrial wind erosion.

Synergistically Using Bauxite Residue (Red Mud) and Other Solid Wastes to Manufacture Eco-Friendly Cementitious Materials

Bauxite residue (red mud) is a solid waste resulting from the aluminum production industry. Disposal or landfill of the red mud (RM) poses irreversible environmental problems; therefore, it is compelling to find practical solutions that can mitigate the negative environmental problems of RM stacking storage. In the past decades, although the recycling of RM has achieved significant progress, challenges remain from both academic and practical perspectives. Previous studies have demonstrated that all the aluminosilicate-based solid wastes have pozzolanic activity, and thus can be considered as resources to manufacture eco-friendly cementitious materials to relieve the carbon emission burden. Therefore, combining RM and other solid wastes to manufacture green cementitious materials has become a promising route to alleviate the burden of environmental pollutions. However, challenges from the fluctuation of the chemical compositions, inert activity, heavy metals stabilization, efflorescence, the side effects of the second pollutions from solid wastes, the hydration process, and mutual interaction mechanisms between the various types of solid wastes are still unclear, especially for multi-components RM-based cementitious materials. This review article summarizes the state of the art of mechanical properties, microstructure characterization methodologies, and hydration process and mechanisms of RM along with other solid wastes. The main challenges and future research trends are discussed. This article attempts to summarize the details of the RM recycling technologies that are beneficial to readers in understanding the background knowledge and research methodologies of eco-friendly cementitious materials.

Research on Strength Prediction Model and Microscopic Analysis of Mechanical Characteristics of Cemented Tailings Backfill under Fractal Theory

In order to further study the internal relationship between the microscopic pore characteristics and macroscopic mechanical properties of cemented tailings backfill (CTB), in this study, mine tailings and ordinary Portland cement (PC32.5) were selected as aggregate and cementing materials, respectively, and different additives (anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), lime and fly ash) were added to backfill samples with mass concentration of 74% and cement–sand ratios of 1:4, 1:6 and 1:8. After 28 days of curing, based on the uniaxial compressive strength test, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) porosity test and the fractal characteristics of pore structure, the relationships of the compressive strength with the proportion and fractal dimension of pores with different radii were analyzed. The uniaxial compressive strength prediction model of the CTB with the proportion of harmless pores and the fractal dimension of harmful pores as independent variables was established. The results show that the internal pores of the material are mainly the harmless and less harmful pores, and the sum of the average proportions of the two reaches 73.45%. Some characterization parameters of pore structure have a high correlation with the compressive strength. Among them, the correlation coefficients of compressive strength with the proportion of harmless pores and fractal dimension of harmful pores are 0.9219 and 0.9049, respectively. The regression results of the strength prediction model are significant, and the correlation coefficient is 0.9524. The predicted strength value is close to the actual strength value, and the predicted results are accurate and reliable.
