The Effect of the Concentration of Copper Ions on the Unfrozen Water Content in Bentonites Measured with the Use of DSC Method

Mobility of Zn and Cu in Bentonites: Implications for Environmental Remediation

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mobility of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and their impact on the properties of bentonites and unfrozen water content. Limited research in this area necessitates further analysis to prevent the negative effects of metal interactions on bentonite effectiveness. Tests involved American (SWy-3, Stx-1b) and Slovak (BSvk) bentonite samples with Zn or Cu ion exchange. Sequential extraction was performed using the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) method. Elemental content was analyzed via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Unfrozen water content was measured using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results showed a significant influence of the main cation (Zn or Cu) on ion mobility, with toxic metal concentrations increasing mobility and decreasing residual fractions. Mobile Zn fractions increased with larger particle diameters, lower clay content, and shorter interplanar spacing, while the opposite was observed for Cu. Zn likely accumulated in larger clay pores, while Cu was immobilized in the bentonite complex. The stability of Zn or Cu ions increased with higher clay content or specific surface area. Residual Zn or Cu fractions were highest in uncontaminated bentonites with higher unfrozen water content, suggesting the potential formation of concentrated solutions in sub-zero temperatures, posing a threat to the clay-water environment, especially in cold regions.

The Use of Thermoporometry in the Study of Frost Resistance of Rocks

From an engineering point of view, it is important to know the factors influencing the frost resistance of rocks with porosity above 2% due to their different frost resistance. The article focused on frost durability research using the thermoporometry method (TMP) and the assessment of water phase transition in the pore spaces of selected rocks. For this purpose, the differential scanning calorimetry method (DSC) was used with the adoption of an original algorithm for eliminating the thermal inertia of the measurement system. The results of the DSC method were supplemented with the results of pore size distribution using the mercury intrusion porosimetry method (MIP) and standard rock frost resistance tests. Based on the research carried out using the thermoporometry method, it was confirmed that the ability of water to freeze in the temperature range from -5 °C to -20 °C was important, as well as the ability of rocks to increase the degree of water saturation during freeze-thaw cycles. Based on calorimetric tests combined with thermoporometry, in the case of non-frost-resistant rocks, a significant (dominant) share of pores with a radius of under 10 nm (amounting to over 0.008 cm3/cm3) was found. Pore connections in the water freezing process do not influence the investigated rocks' frost resistance.

Assessment of Unfrozen Water Content in Copper Bentonites Using the 1H NMR Technique: Optimization, the Method's Limitation, and Comparative Analysis with DSC

Studies on changes in unfrozen water content in copper bentonite from Slovakia were conducted using both differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. The aims of this study were to 1. optimize the method for determining changes in unfrozen water content using the 1H NMR technique in model bentonites based on the DSC results; 2. analyze the relationship between unfrozen water content, as determined via DSC and the optimized NMR technique, and the physicochemical parameters of bentonites; and 3. identify the limitations in determining changes in unfrozen water content using the 1H NMR technique in relation to copper-contaminated bentonites. The results obtained using the optimized NMR method applied to the model bentonites correlated well with the DSC results. The unfrozen water content in the Cu-contaminated bentonites was 2-18% lower after NMR compared to the DSC results, likely due to the mobility of copper ions and their paramagnetic properties. Statistically significant differences in unfrozen water content between the DSC and NMR methods were observed, depending on molar concentration, copper ion concentration, and temperature, confirmed via Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Calorimetric studies are recommended for investigating unfrozen water content changes in contaminated clays. Further NMR research could identify metals influencing free induction decay signals under varying physicochemical conditions.
