Role of Collectors and Depressants in Mineral Flotation: A Theoretical Analysis Based on Extended DLVO Theory

Efficient Separation of Ultrafine Coal Assisted by Selective Adsorption of Polyvinylpyrrolidone

The efficient separation of ultrafine coal is a challenging process due to the ultrafine particle size and gangue entrainment. In this study, a polymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), was introduced as a regulator for ultrafine coal beneficiation. The addition of PVP improved the combustible recovery of clean coal and decreased the ash content. This effect was also presented by the selectivity index. The regulation mechanism of PVP was investigated using diverse methods. The adsorption tests performed demonstrated the adsorption amount of PVP on coal, kaolinite, and quartz, which were related to the increase in the separation efficiency. A zeta potential analyzer was employed to elucidate the effect of PVP on the electrical properties of ultrafine particles. The results revealed that the electrokinetic potential of mineral was sensitive to the varying PVP concentration. The particle size distribution was observed to value the influence of PVP on the particle behavior, which was tested by a laser particle size analyzer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to investigate the surface elemental compositions of coal, kaolinite, and quartz, which were regulated by the adsorption of PVP. This research is beneficial to understanding the role of PVP as regulators and provides a basis for the efficient separation of ultrafine coal.

Adsorption mechanism of a new combined collector (PS-1) on unburned carbon in gasification slag

Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) is a type of solid waste produced during coal gasification, in which unburned carbon (UC) severely restricts its resource utilization. The removal of UC from CGFS is considered an urgent problem. This study applies PS-1 (a mixture of kerosene and oleic acid at the ratio of 7:3) to improve the flotation separation effect of carbon from CGFS. The flotation adsorption mechanism of PS-1 on UC is revealed by experiment/molecular dynamics simulation and characterization analysis. Results show that long-chain hydrocarbons in PS-1 are adsorbed on the non-polar region of UC by Van der Waals force, while -COOH groups in PS-1 are adsorbed on the polar sites of -COOH and -OH of UC by hydrogen bonds. The synergistic effect of long-chain hydrocarbons and -COOH groups in PS-1 improves the hydrophobicity of the UC surface. Compared with traditional collector kerosene, the combustible recovery rate of foam products can be increased to 68.0%. Collector dosage can be reduced by approximately 50% using PS-1. This study can provide essential guidance for the design of CGS flotation collectors and help realize the comprehensive utilization of coal gasification solid waste.

Unraveling Interaction Mechanisms between Molybdenite and a Dodecane Oil Droplet Using Atomic Force Microscopy

Molybdenite (MoS₂) is a mineral that has drawn great interest because of its potential application in various fields. To facilitate the flotation of molybdenite, the mineral pulp is commonly treated with nonpolar oil additives to promote hydrophobicity and to form an oil bridge between ultrafine molybdenite particles for agglomeration. In this study, dodecane was chosen as a model oil to investigate the flotation mechanisms of molybdenite with nonpolar oil. The interaction forces between a micrometer-sized dodecane droplet and the molybdenite basal plane in various electrolyte solutions were directly measured by the atomic force microscope droplet probe technique. The effects of added salts, ionic strength, and solution pH on interaction forces were evaluated by considering van der Waals, electrical double-layer (EDL), and hydrophobic forces. The experimentally measured force curves were found to agree well with the Reynolds lubrication model and the augmented Young-Laplace equation. The results show that the competition between repulsive EDL forces and attractive hydrophobic forces was directly responsible for oil-molybdenite attachment behavior. High pH and low salinity (<24 mM NaCl) led to strong repulsive EDL forces, which stabilized the interaction and prevented the attachment of oil to molybdenite. Both low pH and high salinity facilitated the attachment of oil to molybdenite through the depression of EDL force, allowing attractive hydrophobic force to dominate. The hydrophobic attraction was quantified with an exponential decay length of 1.0 ± 0.1 nm. Furthermore, calcium ions decreased the magnitude of the surface potentials of both oil and molybdenite more than that seen with the same ionic strength of sodium ions, suggesting the suppressed EDL repulsion. This study provides quantitative information about the surface forces between oil and the molybdenite basal plane and an improved understanding of the fundamental interaction mechanisms governing molybdenite recovery by mineral flotation.

Role of DTAB and SDS in Bubble-Particle Attachment: AFM Force Measurement, Attachment Behaviour Visualization, and Contact Angle Study

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurements were used to study the role of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in bubble-particle attachment. The results show that the forces between bubbles and the hydrophilic glass particle were always repulsive in the absence of DTAB and SDS. An attractive hydrophobic force was induced when the particles became hydrophobic, and the force was proportional to the water contact-angle. In the presence of DTAB and SDS, the cationic head group of DTAB adsorbed onto the negative hydrophilic glass surface as a monolayer and thus induced a hydrophobic force. However, at a high DTAB concentration, the DTAB molecules began to adsorb as a bilayer, reverting back to a hydrophilic surface. The hydrophobic force disappeared and the water film between the bubble and particle was stabilised under the repulsive double-layer force. The anionic SDS molecules could not adsorb onto the hydrophilic glass surface. The repulsive force always dominated the bubble-particle interaction. In the case of hydrophobic glass, the hydrophobic force decreased, and even disappeared, with the addition of DTAB and SDS. All the findings from the AFM force curves were consistent with the attachment behaviour and contact angle results.
